     The Lewises

Nora Lewis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nora_1.png
Nora Lewis
"I am 'born to speak all mirth and no matter.'"

A short, snarky girl. She is the player character of Changeling who moved back to Pine Hollow with her family.

Nora is a senior at Stone Circle Academy who loves art, Shakespeare, coffee, and bantering with her friends. She suffers from guilt over her twin brother, Spencer, losing vision in one eye while looking for her.

  • Action Survivor: Nora is new to the supernatural world, so many of her interactions with it involve just trying to survive. That doesn't mean she doesn't fight back—even when given the option to run, she sometimes stays in order to help someone else. Still, she is far from equipped to deal with everything that happens to her.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Courtney Lewis has no problem stalking her daughter to meet her dates or teasing Nora about the boys she likes. Just how embarrassing she is depends on what route she takes, but she will do something.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Despite Spencer's many cruelties toward her, ranging from emotional abuse (ignoring her, threatening her) to physical assault (grabbing her, hitting her), she remains fiercely protective of him.
    • In routes where Vilos discovers Spencer knows about the club before his status as a Cryptic is revealed, Nora argues for his memories to be left alone because of all that he has gone through. Otherwise, she keeps his suspicions secret out of a desire to protect him.
    • Several dialogue choices allow her to defend Spencer, warn him of danger, or attempt to mend their broken relationship.
  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: Her dad doesn't like the idea of her dating, particularly in Elliot and Ewan's routes.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to Spencer's Cain, though how pronounced depends on the route.
  • Covert Pervert: Nora occasionally fantasizes about her love interests—even before she settles on one—such as thinking about Marc's "heavenly cologne," Danny's biceps, or William's "slender, pretty hands." This would be fairly harmless since she never says any of this out loud... except at least some of them are telepaths.
  • Damsel in Distress: Nora finds herself in dangerous situations regularly, and her love interest usually has to rescue her.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Nora has disappeared twice before, with no memory of either time. The second disappearance led to her relationship with her brother deteriorating, bullying, unintentional Gaslighting from therapists and ostracization.
    • The bullying at school got so bad that the family moved away to shelter Nora and Spencer.
  • Easily Forgiven: Her anger never lasts long toward those she loves. Sometimes this is understandable, though sometimes it seems her forgiveness is given too easily, such as forgiving Spencer for almost setting her on fire in Elliot's route.
  • Exposed to the Elements: Wears her pajamas outside due to her sleepwalking. Since it's October in the Pacific Northwest, it's pretty cold.
  • Friendless Background: Averted. Even though seeing her best friend Ally again after five years is part of why she's excited to return to Pine Hollow, Nora notes that she did have friends in the city that she would miss.
  • Fun Size: All of the guys (except for William) comment on how short she is, and how it makes her cute.
  • Glamour Failure: Her hair and eyes change color sometimes, foreshadowing that it isn't really her body.
  • Hates Being Called Cute: Becomes irritated anytime she is called cute.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Nora is very short, as commented on in most routes, and all of her LI's except William are average height or better. It's particularly pronounced in Marc's route, where he has to hunch over to kiss her.
  • I'm Having Soul Pains: Nora has a certain memory that causes pain when she tries to think about it.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Nora has a habit of asking very personal questions and occasionally making jokes at inappropriate times.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Nora's memories of the times she was lost in the woods are entirely gone from her memories.
  • Literally Loving Thy Neighbor: If she romances Elliot or Danny.
  • Mage Born of Muggles: Her parents do not have her abilities, though at least one of them shares her Fae heritage.
  • Magically-Binding Contract: She agreed to one as a child to save Spencer.
    • She can agree to one with The Murder.
  • Must Have Caffeine: She has a strong addiction to coffee.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: On Elliot's route, she is the "in-between" to Elliot's "nice" and Marc's "mean."
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: Occasionally says unkind things or asks sensitive questions.
    • Says that she wishes Cryptics didn't exist in front of Kaya and Marc. While Kaya is sympathetic to her frustration, Marc is deeply hurt.
    • Suggests the usage of bungee cords to Ewan as a way of keeping his head on. He is not amused.
    • Feels that she did this when William reveals that his mother died after Nora tells him that she was worried about him missing school.
  • Plucky Girl: Despite the frankly traumatic things she experiences, she doesn't give up.
  • Sharing a Body: Late in the story it's revealed that her soul was moved into the body of the Changeling Faerie that replaced her as a child. In some routes she's very upset at the idea that she's sharing a body with her kidnapper, who takes control while she's asleep and goes out at night trying to get back to the Fae.
  • Sibling Team: With Spencer in the routes where they reconcile.
  • Tears of Fear:
    • Nora starts sobbing when she finds Elliot drinking a man's blood and thinks that he is the killer.
    • Nora can choose to start crying in Marc's route once she's almost killed by entering the library door without knocking.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: She is remarkably kinder in William's route than she is in the other routes, particularly compared with Marc's route where she's quite antagonistic.
  • Quirky Curls: She is quirky and has long curly red hair.

Spencer Lewis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spencer_8.png
Spencer Lewis
"I'm not crazy! Don't you ever say that to me!"

An angry young man, and Nora's twin brother.

Spencer is a senior at Stone Circle Academy who tends to keep to himself. He is suspicious of his sister's involvement in the Mysteries Club and attempts to figure out what she is hiding.

  • Action Survivor: Even more so than Nora. Spencer usually barely gets out of the scrapes he gets into.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: He is technically two minutes younger than Nora, and he annoys her greatly.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Nora overhears him threatening Elliot to leave her alone and thinks he’s being protective, something that she finds touching. However, it’s quickly revealed that he is actually suspicious of her sleepwalking and thinks Elliot is her accomplice.
  • Beta Couple: With Ally in most routes.
  • Big Brother Instinct:
    • He wants to save the real Nora, whom he thinks has been switched out for the protagonist, from Faerie.
    • Invoked in Corvin's route, where he is reluctant to leave them in a room together. Alone. Unsupervised.
Spencer: Is this where I, as her big brother, warn you not to touch her?
  • Bookworm: He's very intelligent and methodical in his research.
  • Cain and Abel: With Nora, though how bad it gets depends on the route. It's the worst in Elliot's route, where he considers setting her on fire, and actually goes through with it in a bad ending. Depending on how she's treated him, he can also snap and accidentally kill her when he confronts her about being a Changeling..
  • Cassandra Truth:
    • Spencer claimed that Nora was actually "a monster" five years before, having seen her glamour fall. Everyone just thought he was crazy.
    • He knows that something is weird about the Mysteries Club, but he can't say anything about it. The club members exploit this to keep him quiet until they have time to deal with him.
  • Distressed Dude: He gets into more trouble than he can handle on some routes, and Nora has to save him.
  • Evil Twin: Nora jokes to Danny and Elliot that she has a twin--but don't worry, she's the good one.
  • Regretful Traitor: While he's rarely sorry about anything he does to Nora in the different routes due to his suspicions of her, in Marc's route he comes to understand the truth about her before the route's finale, and still is forced to lure her into Adrien's trap because at this point he's been enslaved by Adrien's vampire powers. The first thing he does when Nora wakes up imprisoned is tearfully apologize for what he was forced to do.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: He thinks that Nora is a Changeling. He's right, but she's his sister's soul in a Changeling's body, meaning that it really is Nora.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: In Elliot's route, he pairs up with Grant Mitchell. As a result, he is at his worst.
  • Vampiric Draining: He gets his life force drained by Adrien. Repeatedly.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Spencer does genuinely love his sister. The problem is that he thinks Nora's a Changeling and that he'll only get his real sister back if she's gone. This leads him to antagonize his sister for five years, even up to kidnapping her on Elliot's route to try to force her to reveal her Changeling self.
  • Would Hit a Girl: In most routes, he gets physically violent with Nora: grabbing her, slapping her, or throwing her against walls.

Shane & Courtney Lewis

Nora and Spencer's parents. Shane works in his father's shop while he recovers, and Courtney is a real estate agent/

  • Adults Are Useless: They play little role in the actual plot, beyond being Spencer and Nora's parents.
    • They never wake up at night, even though both Nora and Spencer are frequently sneaking out at night. Or, if they do, they do so after their children have returned.
    • They appear to hold Nora responsible for mending her relationship with Spencer. While Spencer is punished for abandoning her at the high school, they don't seem to believe Nora in regards to how threatening Spencer is to her. Considering some routes reveal that he has homocidal thoughts toward her, while others have her actually frightened of him, this is a bit of an oversight.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Between Shane's teasing Nora and Courtney's enthusiastic support of her daughter dating whomever her love interest is, Nora comments a lot on how embarrassing they are.
  • Go to Your Room!: Spencer and Nora get into a physical fight in one route, and Courtney sends them both to their room.
  • Happily Married: Their marriage seems to be a happy one, as they go out on date nights and act "gross" when they think no one is watching, according to Nora.
  • Shipper on Deck: Courtney very much would like her children to date, and teases Nora about whatever boy she's romancing.

     Love Interests

Corvin Beltran

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/corvin_4.png
Corvin Beltran
"You know, you might be the only person in this school that doesn't trust me."

A Wizard who keeps a lot of secrets, and one of Nora's classmates.

Corvin is a senior at Stone Circle Academy and works part-time at his family's cafe, The Murder. He is known for being clumsy and popular for giving out compliments. He enjoys teasing people and being helpful.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Cor, Cory.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: He has six older brothers, and Merle notes that they had to stop letting him carry orders to people because he dropped too many dishes and gave free things to his friends too often.
    • Merle has to shoo him into the kitchen so that he doesn't listen to Nora's consultations.
Merle: Cory, you know better than to listen in on a client.
  • Astral Projection: During his route, he will astral project into Nora's dream and wake her up.
  • Blessed with Suck: Part of his abilities mean that people are naturally drawn to him... but this just means he doesn't know who wants to be his friend because they like him and who is just drawn to his magic.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Corvin is weird, but very good at what he does.
  • The Chosen One: As a Pillar, he fills this role.
  • Covert Group with Mundane Front: Corvin's family's business, The Murder, is ostensibly a coffee shop, but enter through the back entrance and you can get other services...for a price.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything??:
    • Early on his route, Nora catches him under the stairs with a girl, who appears to be struggling to escape. She assumes the worst.
    • Corvin frequently shows up to school with bruises, for which he provides unlikely explanations.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Nora mistakes him for a girl when they first meet.
  • Good Samaritan: He helps people because it's the right thing to do, and he hates accepting any payment. Unfortunately, magic often requires some sort of balance to work.
  • Indirect Kiss:
    • He takes a sip of Nora's coffee after she offers it to him on his route. Neither of them thinks anything of it since Nora is oblivious to that kind of thing and Corvin just wasn't thinking, but Ally points it out and teases them.
    • He does the same thing on Elliot's route, to his annoyance.
  • The Klutz: He deliberately wears prescription glasses that impair his eyesight—being clumsy helps explain the bruises better and it prevents him from seeing people’s secrets.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy
  • Loved by All: He is extremely popular at school, noting that Nora is the only person that doesn’t automatically trust him.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is derived from Corvinius, which means "raven." His familiar is a white crow, which is a corvid.
  • Meet Cute: If Nora romances him, they meet by running into each other face-first after he drops his Grimoire.
  • Pretty Boy: He is frequently described as pretty rather than handsome, so much so that Nora initially mistakes him for a girl.
  • Shipper on Deck: He congratulates Elliot on making a move so quickly in his route and teases William when he orders lunch for them.
  • True Sight: He can see others' secrets.

Ewan Croft

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ewan_3.png
Ewan Croft
"Is this going to be one of your usual questions?"

A Dullahan whose powers have just asserted themselves.

Ewan is a senior at Stone Circle Academy. His Fae heritage recently manifested and upended his life. He works part-time at his family's bakery, the Faerie Forest Bakery.

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Logan Croft is certainly something.
  • Body Horror: His head just... falls off.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Shane is uncertain about his dating Nora, since he rides a motorcycle and wears all black.
  • The Fair Folk: He is half-fairy.
  • Freakiness Shame: His head falls off during certain times of the day and intense emotions. It mortifies him, and if Nora doesn’t actively seek him out after her fainting spell, he avoids her out of embarrassment.
  • Gentle Giant: He is surprisingly gentle and soft-spoken.
  • Genre Savvy: Because his father is Fae, he is acutely aware of the rules they operate by.
    • Throws Logan's baked goods away, because faerie food is dangerous for humans.
    • Insists that Nora has to pay for the cake she gets from their bakery.
    • Warns Nora to stay away from the Fae in general.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: His mother is a human, and his father is a Dullahan.
  • Headless Horseman: He is the son of one, and thus can remove his head and is compelled to ride.
    • To his annoyance, horses are drawn to him.
    • Rather than ride a horse, he rides a motorcycle.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: He hates the Fae and considers his Fae heritage asserting itself to be one of the worst things to happen to him.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: Implied, since he is an immortal Faery, though Nora may have lengthened lifespan due to her time in Faery.
  • Meaningful Appearance: His bangs initially appear to indicate his aloofness, but eventually they indicate his shyness.
  • Nice Guy: He meets Nora because he saw her crying in the parking lot after Spencer abandoned her. He offers her tissues and a ride home.
  • Odd Friendship: With Dracen.
  • Pointy Ears: His ears signify his Fae heritage.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Before he had to worry about his head falling off, he was much more outgoing and even popular.
  • Sleep Cute: They spend the night in the club room together, and Nora goes to sleep on Ewan's chest.
  • True Love's Kiss: Brenna convinces Nora that this is what it will take to wake him up after he's rescued from Faerie. It's just a joke, though.
  • True Sight: He can see the Fae.
  • Youthful Freckles

Elliot Damiani

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/elliot_04.png
Elliot Damiani
"I still maintain that [drinking blood] doesn't make me a cannibal."

A very confused Vampire, and one of Nora's classmates and neighbors.

Elliot is a senior at Stone Circle Academy. He was infected with vampirism two years prior to Changeling. When Nora moves next door, he develops a crush on her.

  • Apologizes a Lot: Frequently apologizes, and seems to take the blame for most of his worse social interactions, even when it isn’t his fault or he’s the victim.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: He is the youngest of the main cast and the only one who is still 17 by the end of the story.
  • Body Horror: As part of his transformation, his canines fell out to be replaced with fangs.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me:
    • Brenna hangs around him for this reason. He fed her and brought her out of a storm while she was in cat form and she's been trying to pay him back since.
    • How he and Danny became friends.
  • Blended Family Drama: Subverted. Jon, Eliot's stepfather, apparently initiated the move to Pine Hollow because he learned there was a significant Vampire community there and thought it would be better for Elliot. Likewise, his stepsister Emily doesn't hold a grudge against him for almost accidentally infecting her and affectionately calling him Mozzie. However, a conversation with Elliot in Danny's route suggests that their acceptance wasn't as smooth as he initially makes it out to be.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: While he keeps two major secrets on his own route, he still has trouble in general.
    • He accidentally snitches on Danny and Nora coming back from the forest during the night. When he realizes it was supposed to be a secret, he makes up increasingly bad lies to cover it up.
    • After asking Nora not to tell Danny he was being bullied, she jokingly gives him ten minutes before he admitted it to Danny anyway. Fifteen if he was trying.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: On Elliot's route, he tends to stutter, mumble, and trail off when he attempts to convey his feelings for Nora. If it appears he is going to successfully confess, he is usually interrupted.
  • Chekhov's Skill:
    • He shapeshifts into a swarm of spiders. This skill is later used to find Nora when she goes missing.
    • He tells Nora Vampire venom can numb injuries. Later it’s revealed to be a paralytic venom.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When asked to elaborate on how Nora smells different from other humans, Elliot uses the metaphor of lasagna and chicken parmigiana. Nora is, understandably, a little put off by the comparison to food from someone who drinks blood. Elliot, however, assumes the problem is that she just doesn't understand what the foods are and apologetically explains that his father was Italian.
  • Covert Pervert: Nora is briefly frightened when he seems to be staring at her neck. Then she realizes that he's actually staring a little lower.
Nora: I didn't know if I wanted to slap him for scaring me or for staring. Or both.
    • Elliot is mentioned several times to be interested in perverted magazines.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: While Shane doesn't seem pleased with his daughter dating, period, he specifically picks on Elliot for his style of dress and piercings.
  • Devoted to You: Part of being a Vampire is that Elliot gets attached very easily and is devoted to the object of his affections. This is most obvious in his route, where he does everything from bringing Nora coffee to carrying her home. Even on others' routes, he clearly has feelings for her.
    • On Marc's route, he cheers her up while Marc is avoiding her after their fight.
    • On Danny's route, he cries all night after Nora falls into a Ghost Road after he scares her.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Elliot frequently does favors for Nora and gives her hopeful looks after his love confession, though he never pushes it, even reminding her she's free to say no because he values her friendship.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Has very dark hair and pale skin. This is one of the things that hints he is a Vampire when Nora meets him.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Mozzie, courtesy of his stepsister. It means "mosquito."
  • The Empath: He's able to get an idea of someone's emotional state by touching them.
  • Everyone Can See It: Even though Nora is either a little oblivious or in denial of his crush, everyone else is well aware of it.
    • In his own route, Ally teases Nora about it, Marc flirts with her to annoy Elliot, and Corvin actively roots for them.
    • Neither Corvin nor Marc appreciate his crush on her in their own routes and are quick to shut it down.
  • For Halloween, I Am Going as Myself: Courtney asks if he's not wearing a costume for Halloween. He smiles and tells her, "I'm a Vampire. We look like everybody else, just with bigger teeth."
  • Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: He doesn't have to kill anyone to get blood, and is a genuinely nice person.
  • Green-Eyed Monster:
    • Elliot struggles with jealousy due to being a Vampire, but he's usually pretty good at suppressing it and isn't as extreme as other characters. He does, however, get upset when Corvin drinks from the cup of coffee he buys for Nora, and fights with Marc over what is implied to be jealousy whenever the latter interacts with Nora. This can lead Nora to getting angry and calling them on their bickering.
    • Elliot also envies Danny's popularity and charisma, though he never takes it out on him.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Danny.
  • Hopeless Suitor: When not on his route, he's this. Regardless of whether Nora shows interest, he develops a crush on her and will occasionally make advances if her love interest is taking too long. However, he respects her decision.
  • How Much Did You Hear?: If on his route, Nora will rant to Ally about the stress she has been going through. Elliot, afraid she was avoiding him, goes looking for her and ends up at the bottom of the stairwell in time to hear her talk about how hard it is to be herself around him and that he has terrible timing in terms of his confession. After an awkward exchange, he takes off in tears.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Elliot is by far the palest character in the game, but he is the first to comment on Nora’s health and tell her she looks anemic.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Frequently backtracks on earnest offers to help for fear of coming off as creepy. He also repeatedly assures Nora that it's okay if she doesn't like him back, and seems surprised if she assures him she does.
  • Ironic Fear: He's terrified of spiders. Now guess what his shapeshift is?
Nora: What do you turn into, Elliot?
    Elliot: ...
    Nora: Elliot?
    Elliot: Spiders.
Nora: Spiders? As in plural? How many?
    Elliot: ...A lot.
    Nora: *shudders*
Elliot: My thoughts exactly. The first I transformed was by accident—so not cool.
  • Literally Loving Thy Neighbor: Develops a crush on Nora when she moves in, regardless of whose route she takes.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: Implied, since he is an immortal Vampire, though Nora may have lengthened lifespan due to her time in Faery.
  • Meet Cute: If Nora takes the recycling out before the trash, she finds him struggling with the bins. Their meeting involves awkward banter and him catching her after Danny beans her in the head with a football.
  • Nice Guy: He is friendly and helpful to Nora, even if she doesn't choose his route.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: On his route, he is the "nice" character to Marc's "mean" and Nora's "in-between."
    • He is incredibly patient with both Marc's bullying and Nora's uncertainty.
    • He helps both Marc and Nora with their respective goals.
  • Noodle Incident: He met Danny after his first transformation, which somehow led to a naked chase through the woods.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Despite some initial bumps, Elliot's mother and stepfather have done their best to make accommodations for his needs.
  • Sleepyhead: Frequently falls asleep in class as a result of being nocturnal.
  • Spiders Are Scary: Elliot will hesitantly admit to Nora that he can shapeshift into a swarm of spiders. And he absolutely hates it.
  • Vampiric Draining: Nora offers him her blood on his route, and depending on how much Character Development he's gone through, he may accept.

William Lee

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/william_917.png
William Lee
"It's very difficult to be a human in this world."

A shy Esper, and one of Nora's classmates.

William is a senior at Stone Circle Academy. He has been a powerful psychic since birth, with abilities like telepathy, psychometry, and telekinesis. As a result, he is followed by an entourage of haunts—noncorporeal entities that cling to him—known as his chorus.

  • Abusive Parents: His mother attempted to burn the house down with the two of them still in it. She didn't succeed and ended up permanently hospitalized.
  • Apologizes a Lot: Frequently apologizes, even if it isn't his fault. This is usually on behalf of his ghosts.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: He falls in love with Nora partially because she's the first person to really reach out to him.
William: You're the first person to feel real to me in a long time.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He is perfectly nice, but also capable of a lot of destruction if pushed past his limits.
Guess: I know he's a good kid. But that doesn't mean he's not also incredibly dangerous.
    • This is also how his classmates see him. He may be a nice kid, but sitting too close to him can lead to injuries.
  • Break the Cutie: He's the kindest, most empathetic character in the game. This does not stop him from being put through hell.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: Nora poses that he has been told it's his duty to suffer so many times that he no longer questions the status quo.
  • Cuddle Bug: Once he realizes nothing bad will happen when he touches Nora, he is very contact-oriented. Theirs is the most physical of the six relationships.
    • He offers to wake up Nora if she naps before class, but he ends up falling asleep cuddling with her.
    • A lot of the flirting in their route is physical rather than verbal—touching each other’s faces, holding hands, and sitting closely together.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His life has been a series of traumatic events.
Nora: I'm not going to abandon you.
    William: Everyone says that...at first.
    • He's been plagued by poltergeist activity from birth and his lack of control over his telekinesis led to his parents abandoning him.
    • He's forced to appease the haunts that cling to him constantly, leaving other students to be frightened of him.
    • When under stress, he loses control over his abilities, which leads to disastrous consequences. Dialogue from him and Guess, as well as his agency file, suggest that this has happened several times, and that people have been hurt as a result.
  • Demonic Possession: Due to his high-level psychic abilities, he is constantly worried about being possessed.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: William was denied physical affection as a child and desperately wants to be able to have people around him. This results in the major conflict in his route.
  • Distressed Dude: At the end of his route, Nora has to rescue him from the Ancient slumbering beneath Slaughter.
  • Eating Lunch Alone: William eats lunch by himself and everyone keeps their distance. While most students don't realize what's going on with him, they know that scary things happen to people who get close to William.
  • Extreme Doormat: He is so afraid of hurting others, that he obeys Vilos and Guess when told to isolate himself.
    • Guess “wrangles” him into helping the NRAP. While Vilos points out Will could always say no, Nora counters that anyone who knows William know he would never do that.
    • Marc comments on it, saying that Will would never tell someone if they were bothering him.
  • Funny Background Event: If the play pays attention to his sprite, he visibly reacts to Nora's thoughts. For example, when Nora starts thinking about the embarrassing things she has thought around him, like putting away her underwear, how nice his voice sounds, and how pretty his hands are, he turns bright red.
  • Friendless Background: Until high school, he didn't have any friends.
  • Guilt Complex: Takes responsibility for the actions of his chorus.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal:
    • He feels a lot of guilt for even wanting to connect to others, and he wishes he could be normal.
    • One of his endings shows what he would have been like without his abilities: a happy, friendly, if somewhat introverted, teen.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Believes he is unloveable due to the poltergeist activity that follows him.
  • I See Dead People: He sees haunts, among which are ghosts of the dead.
  • Meaningful Appearance: His long bangs indicate his shyness.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He has a few.
    • After repeated use of a talisman that prevents his haunts from following him in order to spend time with Nora, poltergeist activity around the school and Nora begins to increase.
    • One of his haunts pushes Nora off the stairwell, pushing him over the edge. This leads to a terrifying display of his powers. Once he calms down, he runs off terror and shame.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: If Nora allows him to pay the price for saving her, he loses his abilities and all memories of the supernatural, but not his friendships with Marc and Nora.
  • Meaningful Name: His name means "resolute protector."
  • Mindlink Mates: If Nora romances him, the two of them develop a psychic bond. At the end of his route, he uses it to tell her he loves her.
  • Nice Guy: He's extremely kind.
  • Nothing but Skin and Bones: As a result of malnourishment.
  • Odd Friendship: With Marc.
  • Parental Abandonment: His mother is permantly hospitalized and his father goes on frequent business trips.
  • Poltergeist: His haunts can be possessive and spiteful.
William: Not everything that follows me is friendly.
  • Pretty Boy: He is the shortest LI, very slight, and Nora comments on his pretty hands and great complexion.
  • Psychometry: One of his abilities as a psychic.
  • Raised by Grandparents: After his mother was hospitalized and his father essentially abandoned him, his grandparents took him in.
  • Shipper on Deck: He is quietly supportive of Marc and Nora's relationship if they decide to get together, and smiles if Nora decides she has feelings for him.
  • Shrinking Violet: Very shy and withdrawn. This is a result of frequently having to tend to his haunts.
  • Sleep Cute: He offers to keep watch for Nora while she tries to get in a nap before class, promising to wake her up. However, she ends up falling asleep on his shoulder and he falls asleep as well.
  • The Shut-In: Because his haunts give him so much trouble, he prefers to stay home. Marc tries to alleviate this by doing things and telling him about them in detail.
  • Telepathy: He is a highly skilled telepath.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Horrible things happen to him both before and during the story. He starts out pretty broken and ends up even more traumatized, though he does get closure over his mother's death and is more hopeful about the future in his good endings.
  • True Sight: He can see spirits, ghosts, and other haunts that others can't see.
  • Twice Shy: He's so quiet, Nora has to be the one to make the first move. If she doesn't, they end up as friends.
  • Wham Line: He has several on his route.
    • Upon seeing the Gwisin: "M-mother?"
    • About Nora: 'Did you know...that isn't your body?'
  • When He Smiles: He's one of the gloomiest love interests, although Nora notes he actually smiles or laughs more often than it would seem at first. Nonetheless, she considers it an achievement when she can make him laugh and says he has a very sweet smile.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: He goes through quite a bit and is extremely powerful. On Marc's route, just the mention of William coming to the rescue is enough to shut Matthew and Adrien up.

Macarius "Marc" Loewe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marc_7.png
Marc Loewe
"My family has been pariahs in our community for over a century."

A standoffish Vampire, and one of Nora's classmates.

Marc is a senior at Stone Circle Academy and was born as a Vampire to wealthy parents who homeschooled him for much of his life due to their many enemies.

  • All There in the Manual: His full name—Macarius—is only used on his agency file.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Pretty much all the time.
    • When Nora accidentally forgets the knock for the library and falls into a empty space, Marc is furious with her. While he never actually admits that he was scared, she figures it out pretty quickly.
Marc: When I heard you call out, I was...
      Nora: I was scared too.
  • Arc Symbol: On Marc's route, Shakespeare is what they bond over. He hates it, but finds it tolerable when she tutors him in it for their literature class—so much so that he refuses to switch partners with everybody else.
    • They read "Much Ado About Nothing" together in class, a play about two people wittily bickering until they fall in love... as they bicker wittily. Nora even quotes the play to tease him.
Nora: Men from children nothing differ.
    • During their climactic fight, Nora can quote Hamlet at him in response to him acting jealous of her and Elliot after he made clear he wanted nothing to do with her.
Nora: Really, Marc? Now it's "get thee to a nunnery?"
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Most notably in the final chapter when Marc admits he knew she was in danger because her thoughts had gone quiet.
    • The look on his face when he realizes that Adrien thought he had marked Nora as prey can be described as hurt and horror. He assures her he doesn't see her that way.
    • Despite constantly referring to Nora as noisy and obnoxious, as well as being generally mean to her, he is curt with her brother for behaving the same way.
    • In the Golden Ending for his route, Marc apologizes for his previous argument with Nora in which he said she was the same as all humans (i.e. ignorant and selfish) and says he was wrong about her.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me:
    • He befriends William after the latter teaches him to supress his telepathy.
    • He becomes closer with Nora because she offers to tutor him in Shakespeare.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Nora on his route, and somewhat on Elliot's route, though he may just be intrigued. Or trying to get a rise out of Elliot.
  • Berserk Button: If romanced, then threatening (or flirting with) Nora is about the only way to make him lose his cool. And he will lose it.
  • Brutal Honesty: Marc doesn't pull punches, unless you're William. One of the reasons his relationship with Nora is so prickly in his route is that he tells her point blank that she needs to act smarter about the supernatural community and that her being new to all of it is not an excuse, since most supernatural beings won't care if her missteps are a result of inexperience.
  • Chekhov's Gun: He frequently complains about Nora "shouting" her thoughts at him. Her mind going quiet is how he knows something is wrong.
  • Chick Magnet: As a Vampire, he doesn't have to do much to get someone to fall for him.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Is easily provoked by seeing Adrien talk to Nora, despite insisting he isn't interested, to the point of dragging her off. He does appear to recognize this as a toxic behavior and expresses regret at making her uncomfortable. Adrien lampshades this, comparing Marc to an "overprotective boyfriend."
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Over time, he becomes slightly less standoffish, though their banter remains pretty brutal.
  • Devoted to You: Like Elliot, he is easily attached to people, and is incredibly devoted to them.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Nora mentions he gets a lot of attention, and not just from girls.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: His eyes glow when he uses his Vampire powers or when he's angry.
  • Good Is Not Nice: He is a good person, but he's deliberately rude to everyone he meets.
  • Hates Being Touched: Any kind of touch is very jarring for Marc, as he is suddenly able to read that person's thoughts and finds it uncomfortable. As a result, he prefers to be the initiator.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold:
    • He is very kind to William. While they can't hang out unless they're in the club room, he apparently texts him in the evenings to chat and make sure he's safe.
    • He helps reconcile Ally and Nora on his route and attempts the same for Elliot on Elliot's route.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: While all of the LI's are a fair bit taller than Nora, he's stated several times to be twice her size.
  • Humans Are Bastards: As the only LI to not be human, have been human, or have been raised among humans, he feels this way. He feels that their laws unfairly favor humans—particularly non-Cryptic ones—while overregulating the lives of Cryptics, particularly Vampires. He points out how while Cryptics always need to walk on eggshells to the detriment of their own health, humans don't ever have to make the same efforts to avoid intruding on their lives.
  • Hypocrite: He's defensive about others making assumptions about Vampires, but he also is quick to make snap judgments about others for their species.
    • He calls Elliot a "stunted mongrel" because he is (a) an Infected, rather than a Natural, Vampire and (b) due to prolonged malnourishment, he doesn't have full Vampire powers.
    • He refers to Sean and Derek as a pair of strays.
    • He believes that all humans are inherently suspicious, entitled, and intolerant, and that humans who are genuinely accepting are the exception rather than the rule. This is despite the fact that, as Nora tries to argue in his route, it's not fair to blame humans for not working well with Cryptics when most of them don't know that Cryptics exist in the first place. As she also points out in his route, when humans have a bad encounter with a Cryptic, Marc's suggestion that it wouldn't have happened if the human hadn't made a mistake dealing with the supernatural downplays that someone went through something traumatic for no other crime than being ignorant, even if his views are in favor of supporting the harshly regulated Cryptic community.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Marc expresses this mentality when it comes to his relationship with Nora. He seems genuinely distressed that he might be a monster, and expresses regret at some of his possessive tendencies.
Marc: You tell me where that level of possessiveness came from. An instinctive drive to drive a competitor away from my prey?
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Nora and Marc bicker nonstop on his route, something William comments on.
  • Love Epiphany: He realizes his feelings for Nora are romantic when she nearly dies going through the library door.
  • Meaningful Appearance: His long bangd indicate his aloofness.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: On Elliot's route, he's the "mean" character to Elliot's "nice" and Nora's "in-between."
    • While he doesn't go as far as to hurt Nora, he is abrasive with getting her to give him information, as well as deliberately flirting with her to get on Elliot's nerves.
  • No Social Skills: He grew up in isolation, and Adrien claims this is why he has trouble interacting with others.
  • Odd Friendship: With William, and Lampshaded by Nora.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He's only ever called Marc in the game, but his NRAP file reveals his full name to be Macarius.
  • Our Vampires Are Different:
    • Marc is rather disgusted at the idea of eating "live food," i.e. straight from humans.
    • He also expresses surprise that Nora would think he was older than 18, since someone older would have better places to be than hanging out in a high school.
Nora: What's your thing against Shakespeare? Did you know him personally or something?
Marc: Of course not! I'm only eighteen.
  • Pointy Ears: As a natural Vampire, his ears are pointed, meaning he was never human.
  • Smile of Approval: Rarely, but he is impressed sometimes.
    • When Nora realizes he's a telepath, and sometimes when she says something clever.
  • Telepathy: He has telepathic abilities.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After meeting Spencer and realizing what Nora was dealing with at home (as well as his Love Epiphany), he becomes more pleasant towards her, at least until their argument that signifies the end of the route is approaching.
  • Tsundere: Acts aloof or hostile toward Nora on his route, while also being overprotective.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: He and Nora are so vicious in their dialogue that others are unable to tell if they're teasing, flirting, or fighting.

Daniel "Danny" Tasini

Danny Tasini
A friendly werewolf, and one of Nora's classmates and neighbors.

Danny is a senior at Stone Circle Academy. He was infected two years prior to Changeling and struggles with his new-found species.

    Other Students

Ally Fisher

"Don't look so suprised. I'm your friend before I'm their intern."

A witch and Nora's best friend. She interns for NRAP.

  • Beta Couple: With Spencer in some of the routes.
  • Plucky Girl: She has been through a lot while Nora was in the city, but she's still going strong.
  • Shipper on Deck: Ships Nora with whomever she pursues.

Dracen de L'Court

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dracen.jpg
Dracen de L'Court
"I'm a unicorn, if that helps."

A unicorn and a junior at Stone Circle Academy. He's Ewan's best friend and Marc's cousin by marriage.

  • The Ditz: Tries to pretend to be Nora...but he forgets Spencer's name and keeps calling him Winston.
    • Justified, since unicorns age differently than others—yeah, he may be seventeen years old and look it, but mentally, he's still a child.
  • The Fair Folk: He's a fairie.
  • Unicorn: He is a unicorn in human form, is very naive, and can only carry virgins.

Derek Carter

A natural-born werewolf. He was kicked out of his clan for reasons revealed later in the game.

Sean Daniels

An infected werewolf.

Shelly Lawrence

A witch and a sophomore at Stone Circle Academy.

Kara McAllen

"Try not to get lost on your way to class."

A former friend of Nora's and a senior at Stone Circle Academy. She blames Nora for her fallout with her mother and the end of her pianist career.

  • The Resenter: Even after five years, she blames Nora for the poor turnout at her piano recital, believing Nora did it on purpose for attention.

Adrien Wallace

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/adrien_36.jpg
Adrien Wallace
"She's not to my taste, if you know what I mean."

A sophomore at Stone Circle Academy. He is a Vampire who dislikes Marc and develops an interest in Nora.

  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: As a Vitae he is a very powerful type of vampire, and he's the leader of his group of vampire friends. Once he's regularly feeding off Spencer and more powerful than ever, the other vampire students follow him as much out of fear as anything else.
  • Conspicuous Gloves: He typically wears gloves, to a point Nora notes right away whenever he's not wearing them. Since he's a Vitae, he drains people's life force from skin-to-skin contact, making his intentions more ominous whenever he isn't wearing his gloves.
  • Hypocrite: He's initially wary of Nora and Marc's relationship because, according to him, Marc doesn't have very good self-control around humans due to being isolated, so he claims Marc may try to "claim" Nora as his if provoked. The main conflict from Marc's route comes from him being unable to control his own addiction to Spencer and Nora's life energy once he gets a taste of it.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • While his bullying of Marc isn't justified, he is rightly unhappy that Alex, Marc's cousin, got off with a warning and slap on the wrist while Adrien's brother Ethan was imprisoned for the same crime.
    • Constantly draining someone against their will is wrong, but keeping Vampires at starvation levels is also a really bad idea.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He very carefully words things to Nora in order to make Marc look dangerous, as well as using his vampire powers to manipulate Spencer for his own ends.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes are a vivid orange, but get a red tinge when he's activating his Vampire powers.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Marc implies that Adrien was a better person when he was younger as he, unlike his brother, refused to help Alex enslave and feed off the human students. Being starved of life energy over the next few years, in combination with tasting Spencer and Nora's addictive fae life force, are what turn him into the antagonist he is in Marc's route.
  • Villainous Rescue: Late in in Marc's route he rescues Nora from her Changeling contract, though it's for the selfish reasons of wanting to taste the life energy of her body once it's returned from Faerie.

    Fae

In General

Bartholemew.

A house faerie that pranks Spencer after he kicks over the Faerie Circle.

  • All There in the Manual: His name is never brought up in the game, though it appears in the lore book.
  • The Resenter: After Spencer draws its ire, it takes quite a bit to convince it to settle down. In the meantime, it pranks him relentlessly.
  • Sidekick Creature Nuisance: To Spencer at least. It hides his keys, fills his shoes with dirt, steals his homework, drops his toothbrush, and takes all of his underwear.

Brenna Cavanaugh

An exile from Faerie who hangs around Elliot and causes chaos at Stone Circle Academy. She's typically standoffish towards Nora, but can be begrudgingly helpful towards her depending on the route.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: As per faerie rules about debts.
    • She hangs around Elliot because he showed her kindness when she needed it.
  • The Fair Folk: She's a fairie.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • She is capricious and manipulative, but she does care about some people.
      • Ewan is her nephew, and while she is snappish with him and finds him to be ungrateful, the reason she fell out of favour with the Unseelie Court was because she chose not to drag him back to fairie.
      • Part of the reason she is so bitter about the Courts and delights in ruining her plans is that they seperated her from her husband.
      • She is very attached to Elliot and will provide Nora aid on his route partly because he likes her. On Ewan's route, she hisses at the Doppelgangers when they make him stay behind.
Brenna: You’re lucky that foolish child is so fond of you. I would not bother helping you otherwise.
  • Older Than They Look: She looks like a high schooler, but she's much older than that.
  • Pet the Dog: She is known to occasionally do kind things, like picking up trash or stopping bullies.
  • The Resenter: Faeries are very good at holding grudges, and Brenna is no exception.

Logan Croft

A Dullahan and former Unseelie knight. He left the Faerie Courts for his wife Melanie.

The Doppelgangers

Drifters

—-

Reul

A beautiful but inhuman figure that often shows up in Nora's paintings and drawings. Her identity and connection to Nora, whether as an inner manifestation of her real self or something else, is one of the mysteries of each route. As such, many of her tropes risk spoiling the climax of each route by their names alone.

  • Body Snatcher: Inverted, as she willingly subjected herself to this as part of Nora's Changeling contract. She let the real, unwitting Nora control her body while it was under a glamour to look like her, so no one would wise up to her being a changeling. Reul is only able to control her own body when it's asleep.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: In most of the routes, she's discussed via Nora's art of her long before her actual identity is revealed.
  • Horned Humanoid: She has black horns, firmly illustrating that she is not entirely human.
  • Mystical White Hair: She has white hair despite looking quite young, made to show that she is a magical being.
  • Occult Blue Eyes: Her eyes are a glowing blue that mark her mystical nature. They're given particular emphasis as during most of the times when her faerie glamour briefly fades, it's the blue eyes Nora takes notice of.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Before the events of the game, Reul took part in kidnapping little Nora, and later was the one behind the attack on the child Spencer that cost him his vision in one eye.

    Other Characters

Merle Beltran

One of Corvin's "brothers"—actually his cousin. He's a barista at The Murder, as well as a member of the paranormal think tank.

Kaya Calib

  • Changeling Tale: She was a human child captured by faeries who eventually escaped.

Vilos Ioveanu

A Romanian Wizard. He is the caretaker of the Sophia Athenaeum, a magical library with information on Cryptics. He works part-time at Stone Circle Academy, ostensibly as the assistant librarian, but actually to watch over the Cryptic students that attend class there.
  • Healing Hands: He's supposed to be a talented healer.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure:
    • He trusts Marc and Elliot, despite the NRAP's crackdown on Vampires and asks them to stay off the case not because he distrusts them, but because he's concerned about them. He also assures Elliot that he will make sure he continues to have a future in the agency despite the current situation.

Grant Mitchell

The school psychologist, who shows up in Elliot's route trying to counsel Nora about her disappearance five years ago. He gradually reveals himself as a nuisance and possible antagonist to the club for his own reasons.

  • Corruption of a Minor: He encourages Spencer, a troubled teenage boy, to stalk his own sister and eventually kidnap her so he can get proof of the supernatural.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: While he has no qualms with kidnapping one of his students because he believes she's a Changeling, he is far less eager than Spencer to set said Changeling on fire, instead wanting to reveal Nora's true self through less violent means.
  • The Resenter: After his brother's death, he has become obsessed with exposing the Cryptic community.

Guess Monroe

An Esper and William's mentor. She runs a motorcycle shop and does freelance work for the NRAP.
