Main Characters

    "Cemetery" Mary Anta
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/116454.jpg

The heroine of the story. She is an odd but kind girl with a strange hobby- she likes to visit the local cemetery. She used to live with her parents in the second story of the diner they owned, but ever since their disappearance, she has moved in with Crowven, who she considers a cousin despite not being related by blood. Her only line to her parents is an unknown phone number that contacts her every night. She also has the ability to talk to ghosts.

She reappears in Blackout Hospital as one of the party members. A patient who was admitted and mysteriously never seems to improve, she winds up with Vasilis once the hospital blacks out.

  • All-Loving Heroine: Aside from caring about dead people whom she never met in life, Mary seldom has a bad word to say about anyone in-story, even those who have treated her poorly (such as Twyla, Theo and Zapara, at least initially).
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Because of her fascination with cemeteries, she was picked on by the other children, who called her "Scary Mary" and bullied her so severely she was later homeschooled. In the present day, she admits most people only see her as the weird girl who hangs out at the cemetery and talks to herself, and struggles to form connections that last longer than a funeral.
  • Animal Motifs: A manta ray, per Wordof God. Her body markings, pointy hairdo, and name invoke it.
  • A Saint Named Mary: Despite her dark goth appearance, she is a kind, outgoing Perky Goth who wants to befriend people.
  • Berserk Button: Don't disrespect the sanctity of a graveyard within Mary's presence. She lets Theo have it in Crowven's route for stashing his weed in a tree there, intending to smoke it.
  • Blithe Spirit: As Vasilis notes in Blackout Hospital, Mary has the tendency to rush into people's lives and change them for the better. Deconstructed, as Reginald's obsession with her drove him to murder.
  • Creepy Child: As a child, she was considered this by the other children, who nicknamed her "Scary Mary."
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She is a goth girl in a black dress who likes to hang out in the local cemetery and loves to visit funerals. She is also a normal Perky Goth who enjoys comforting the loved ones of the deceased.
  • Freaky Fashion, Mild Mind: For a goth girl noted more than once as looking slightly demonic, people who meet her tend to be surprised that "Cemetery Mary" is so nice and normal.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Has a horde of plushies in both her childhood bedroom and her room at Crowven's.
  • Horned Hairdo: As pointed out by Theo in Crowven's route, Mary's red hair has two spikes that stick up like a devil's horns.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Mary tends to interpret other people's actions very charitably. She remains unsuspicious of both the crime boss Twyla and Serial Killer Reginald until either becoming victim to their crimes or hearing them confess outright, insisting Twyla is a good person despite her Jerkass tendencies and Reginald is too friendly to be up to anything suspicious.
  • In-Series Nickname: She is called Cemetery Mary within her hometown because she loves to go visit cemeteries and attends strangers' funerals. Not for any creepy reason- she just likes to see the love displayed by the family and friends of the deceased, and to comfort them in return.
  • I See Dead People: She has the ability to visit the afterlife of ghosts by sleeping on their graves.
  • It's All My Fault: Has a tendency to blame herself when things go wrong across all routes. Invokes this trope by name in Twyla's bad end after her quitting on Twyla leads to the latter burning their cabin down and killing Crowven.
  • Mafia Princess: Turns out her family is part of the Congress, a mafia group, and Crowven, whom she considers her cousin, is the current boss. He has been shielding her from his gang war with the Parliament and directing his right-hand man Ovidius to protect her.
  • Nice Girl: Comforts families at funerals and leaves flowers on strangers' graves to ensure they don't feel lonely or forgotten. Is even nice to Twyla, who rarely reciprocates it.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Not counting her interest in funerals, which is for entirely non-morbid reasons, she once owned a pet tarantula, keeps a slew of cute yet creepy plushies in her bedroom, and is delighted by Reginald's coffin designs and giddy when he offers to design one for her, even showing excitement at the prospect of being shut in one to see how it feels.
  • Not Blood Siblings: Cousins, anyway. While Crowven and Mary are not related by blood, their parents were such close friends that they grew up thinking of each other as family.
  • Perky Goth: Despite her black dress and fascination with cemeteries and funerals, she is otherwise a normal, kind lady with an enthusiastic streak a mile wide.
  • Shrinking Violet: Zig-zagged trope. Mary does enjoy being around people, but self-admittedly struggles to make friends; Crowven is her Only Friend prior to the game's events. While she normally has little issue with talking to strangers, she rarely seems to be the one who starts the conversation, and often seems just as happy to fade into the background at a funeral as be part of it. When visiting a club and meeting Crowven's friends for the first time, she becomes overwhelmed and hides in the bathroom for a portion of the night.

    Crowven Corvuson
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/116455.jpg

Mary's cousin. He took her in after the disappearance of her parents. His own parents were mysteriously killed. He is a delinquent and a loud-mouthed punk who can get into trouble a lot, but he loves his cousin dearly.

  • Animal Motifs: His name and appearance bring to mind a crow.
  • Arch-Enemy: He and Twila are the leaders of the rival gangs Congress and Parliament, respectively, and are each other's nemesis.
  • Big Good: He is a crime boss, but he never does anything to hurt Mary and is doing everything in his power to protect her from the Parliament.
  • Berserk Button: Gets angry at the sight or mention of Twyla... though given she's his gang rival (and willing to outright murder him, as shown in her bad ending), it's justified.
  • The Don: He may not look it, but he is secretly the current boss of the mafia-like Congress gang.
  • Five Stages of Grief: A realistic take on this trope in that he has already accepted his parents' deaths but continues to grieve them into the present. Oscillates most heavily between anger and depression throughout his route, which causes him to lash out at or pull back from Mary.
  • Goth: Complimenting Mary's Perky Goth vibe, he has a dark fashion sense and decorating style, and is no stranger to hanging out at cemeteries. Though he can actually be pretty chipper himself, like when gushing to Mary about a date he went on.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • His singing Mary a lullaby (much to his own embarrassment) reveals that he has a pretty decent singing voice.
    • Off-handedly noted as rich by Mary once, although one might not guess it from his home and lack of boastfulness about it.
  • Hot-Blooded: At least when he isn't depressed, Crowven is impulsive, enthusiastic, and kind of a loudmouth who gives his all to everything from arcade games to gang warfare.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He can be quite an aggressive, troublemaking punk, and gets into arguments with Mary, but he does love her and his friends.
  • Misdirected Outburst: Part of his grieving his parents manifests in him yelling at Mary for slight provocations. Both he and Mary seem to recognize this, and he admits as much when apologizing to her late in his route.
  • Only Friend: To Mary, who calls him such in his route.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: His parents were both murdered shortly before the story starts, and while he avoids discussing it most of the time, he is obviously angry and devastated. Mary helping him come to terms with his grief is a core part of his route.
  • Punny Name: Corvuson, considering his Crow theming, is a play on the genus name Corvus (a group that includes crows and ravens, among other birds). And considering his late father's identity, him being a "son" is quite important.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Has a deer plushie in his bedroom, which does not detract at all from his toughness.
  • Villain of Another Story: He is The Don of the Congress and is indicated to be responsible for a fair share of crimes and murders; Twyla in particular implies he drowned a whole bunch of her men in a lake. But he never antagonizes Mary herself, who is his cousin.

    Twyla Sophio
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/116456.jpg

A blogger who is researching the Blackwood Butcher case. She is a bit of a loner and very harsh to others. She recruits Mary to help her pursue the killer.

  • Action Girl: Shows herself to be highly proficient with a gun in many routes.
  • Amateur Sleuth: She is a blogger who decided to take on the Blackwood Butcher case specifically to show up the police, whom she considers useless.
  • Animal Motifs: Her color motif, outfit, and big eyebrows make her resemble an owl.
  • Arch-Enemy: She and Crowven are the leaders of the rival gangs Parliament and Congress, respectively, and are each other's nemesis.
  • Badass Bookworm: Manages to catch a murderer more or less through research, snooping around, and dogged persistence. Also more than capable of handling herself
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With Reginald, the Blackwood Butcher. She is trying to catch him, but is also the true leader of the Parliament, the gang responsible for the abduction of Mary's parents (as they are from a rival gang, the Congress).
  • Brutal Honesty: Doesn't mince words in the least, for any reason.
  • The Determinator: WILL catch the Blackwood Butcher no matter how much work it takes on her part.
  • The Don: Of Parliament as a whole. Although it seems her uncle is the public face of the gang, while Twyla herself runs things from behind the scenes.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Seems genuinely disgusted by the Butcher's actions, particularly his targeting of elderly people to avoid casting suspicion on himself. She may be a murderer, but she won't target civilians.
    • Also expresses a distaste for liars and people who don't keep their promises, which would make sense with her Brutal Honesty schtick.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Tries to at least appear polite to others in most cases, but her Ice Queen demeanor undermines it pretty quickly.
  • Hate Sink: Fully becomes this in her bad ending and the game's true route. While dismissive, brusque, and inconsiderate at the best of times, she shows a degree of basic decency and/or cool traits in other routes that might still earn her points with players. Yet both of these endings make it clear that no matter what Mary might have done to help her, she puts no value at all on Mary's life beyond seeing her as a tool, and will cross every line to ruin the Congress, caring very little who gets hurt in the crossfire.
  • Hero Antagonist: In Here For Sweethearts. While she's as unpleasant as ever, she's trying to stop the pathosphires from eating the negative emotions of the students.
  • I Work Alone:
    • Twyla is absolutely insistent on this when it comes to investigating the Blackwood Butcher, though she does an exception with Mary. Then it's revealed it was a ruse to keep Mary close so she could kill her, due to her relation with the Congress.
    • In Here For Sweethearts she's investigating the school murder and doesn't want Nova meddling around, though they later seem to appreciate their company. Until it's revealed that not only she did it to lull Nova into a false sense of security so that she could kill them, but she's the one behind the school murder in the first place.
  • It's All About Me:
    • She openly states she is trying to catch the Blackwood Butcher because it's getting on the Parliament's way and doesn't care at all about the murders.
    • In Here For Sweethearts she killed a pathosphire and tried to do the same to Nova not because she's worried about the Emotion Eaters attacking people, but because they won't let her enjoy school in peace.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: She is not very good with people and tries to maintain a strictly professional relationship with Mary, only to get hostile if she sees Mary hanging around with Crowven or Reginald. It takes her entire route for her to finally warm up to Mary a little, but it seems like she finally does show a soft side. Then the true route reveals that she had Mary's parents kidnapped and is the true leader of a ruthless rival gang, and she proceeds to try to kill Mary and Crowven.
  • Ice Queen: Aloof, cool-headed, cold-hearted, and something of a Perpetual Frowner.
  • Karma Houdini: Presumably, in any non-true ending, she gets away with her crimes and continues being a crime boss.
  • Pet the Dog: She's The Queenpin of the Parliament mob family, but does show a couple moments of compassion:
    • At her family dinner party, she picks up on Mary's nervousness and invites her to sit near her at the table.
    • In Crowven's route, she runs into Mary hiding in the club bathroom and offers her a reprieve from Crowven and his friends, letting her join her group instead.
  • Rich Bitch: Less in-your-face about it than most examples, but her route (and one possible scene on Crowven's) reveals she lives a life of luxury... and is certainly less than pleasant to be around.
  • The Stoic: Tends not to show much emotion beyond slight annoyance on her face.
    • Not So Stoic: That said, she flips out at Mary once per route when she does not follow up about helping with her investigation, and pulls some Psychotic Smirks in certain scenarios.
  • The Sociopath: She's wholly selfish and incredibly manipulative, feels no shame in hurting others for her own gain, and believes she's entitled to get whatever she wants, by any means necessary. This works for her in Here For Sweethearts, as her lack of emotions makes her immune to Nova's Emotion Eater powers.
  • Only Sane Woman: The most down to earth of the group and often scoffs at the others' antics, particularly Mary's naivete.
  • Unusual Eyebrows: Extending past her forehead, even! Mary can even compliment them at their first meeting.
  • The Queenpin: She is the true leader of the Parliament, a mafia-like gang.
  • The Quiet One: Not fond of making conversation, and tends to be straight to the point about it when she does. She'll actually thank you for staying quiet if you don't talk to her at the cafe.

    Reginald Tetra
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/116457.jpg

A bookworm and coffin-builder who meets and befriends Mary. He is a gentleman who takes a liking to Mary.

  • Affably Evil: He is very polite and does seem to genuinely love Mary in his own twisted way despite being a Serial Killer. Creepily, he keeps his friendly demeanor even when tying Mary up and trying to kill her.
  • Ambiguously Human: While he seems human at first, later revelations imply he might be something else. Even when apprehended by Mary, he is somehow able to vanish from thin air and erase any trace of himself as if he never existed, and in the true endings, he breaks into the Parliament HQ, reappears to Mary, and slips her the key to her cell, then literally vanishes, as if he is some kind of spirit.
  • Animal Motifs: A fang's pufferfish, per Wordof God. His yellow sclera, jacket color, and cute appearance belying aggressiveness do hint at this. He does in fact have fangs, though they are rarely visible.
  • Big Bad: Of Blackout Hospital; the reason he, Vasilis, and Mary are all trapped in the titular hospital is because he was slowly killing Mary, and Rune's spell to save her went horribly wrong.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: In Cemetery Mary with Twyla, the leader of the Parliament. He is the Blackwood Butcher terrorizing the town, but she is the one who kidnapped Mary's parents.
  • Birds of a Feather: His feelings for Mary can be put down to this trope. On the surface, at least, both have similarly morbid interests and are generally friendly and cheerful, but also very lonely and isolated, all of which gives them something to connect over. However, this is eventually downplayed by later revelations about Reginald's character; Reginald himself says that while Mary is a good person, he certainly is not.
  • Deadly Doctor: In Blackout Hospital, he is Mary's doctor who uses his position to make Mary sick and kill her so her spirit can be with him forever.
  • Driven to Suicide: Shoots himself when caught between Twyla and the police in her good ending.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Aside from his sincere (if morbid) enthusiasm towards coffin-making, Reginald can be quite clueless. A good example is when Mary accidentally video-calls him in the middle of the night and asks him why he's fully dressed, which he misunderstands as why he's not naked rather than why he isn't wearing pajamas.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Invoked. From the C Gs alone, Reginald could count as having Cute Little Fangs, but ends up as this trope instead because they are not clearly shown until he's giving his Motive Rant to a tied-up Mary.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: He wears a pair of spectacles to reflect his bookworm nature, and also happens to be a serial killer.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Subverted. His light hair is strawberry blonde or caramel-colored, and he is certainly the most affable character in the main cast after Mary herself. But appearances can be deceiving, as the rest of his entry demonstrates.
  • Hijacked by Ganon: In Blackout Hospital, he is trapped in the hospital with Vasilis and Mary, and seems to have about as much idea of what's going on as they do. It turns out Rune miscast a spell to stop time in order to save Mary from Reginald, who was slowly killing her.
  • Living Lie Detector: Shown this off in his first scene if Mary tries to hide her interest in shoujo manga from him.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Slightly downplayed due to the game's art style, but he has softer features than Crowven and long hair past his butt. Ties it half-up when building coffins.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Became a murderer specifically to keep seeing Mary at his victims' funerals.
  • Karma Houdini: In all endings of Cemetery Mary, he either is about to kill Mary or vanishes completely. In Blackout Hospital, while he is defeated, he vanishes on his own terms, and the ending screen implies his spirit is still stalking Vasilis and Mary.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: A little too enthused about his coffins. He also falls for Mary after meeting her at a funeral once, which to those not familiar with her personality would definitely seem a little weird.
  • Noodle Incident: When Mary visits him in his workshop and comments on his long hair getting in the way, Reginald reassures her that he "hasn't had an accident since." No further context is given.
  • Pet the Dog: In his good ending, he sends Mary a letter promising to tell her the truth about himself one day.
  • Serial Killer: He is the Blackwood Butcher killing innocent people, usually the elderly via a special antifreeze.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: More casual than the usual example with his layered sweater-and-tie ensemble, but definitely qualifies. He seemingly wears black dress shoes even when doing woodwork.
  • Slasher Smile: In his bad ending, he gives Mary one of these when saying what he'll do to her to keep her quiet.
  • Stalker with a Crush: He's been covertly taking pictures of Mary for some time now and watching her whenever she goes to a funeral.
    • Stalker Shrine: Keeps those pictures in his bedroom vanity, along with locks of Mary's hair and stolen items from her house. Her finding these when looking for a flashlight is what tips her off to his true nature.
  • Stepford Smiler: Of the Unstable type, with elements of the Depressed thrown in. Most of his sprites depict him with either a kind or a nervous smile, but his murderous proclivities (as well as some of his dialogue, especially when he and Mary talk about their loneliness) make clear this is at least partly a front for his true character.
  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: Almost too nice on first appearance. In Crowven's route especially, where he has little involvement in the main plot, he's nothing but courteous to Mary and is there for her when she needs a place to stay or a shoulder to cry on, despite them interacting three times at the maximum. Other routes go further and show that he's deranged and dangerous, if not sincere in his feelings for Mary.
  • Yandere: In his route, he reveals that his motive for his murders was that he knew Mary loved to visit strangers' funerals from his prior stalking of her, and so could see her again and again at the funerals, admiring her from afar. Once she discovers the truth, he ties her up while explaining everything. In his bad ending, he murders Twyla for making Mary cry at the cemetery, and later cuts Mary's tongue out to keep her from telling (thankfully offscreen). And in Blackout Hospital, he becomes Mary's doctor so he can slowly kill her and trap her spirit with him.

    Mystery Number

Ovidius

The mysterious person who claims to be with Mary’s parents.

  • A Day in the Limelight: Holiday Shopping follows a day in his life as he executes a member of The Parliament (or spares him) and helps his boss Crowven with some holiday shopping.
  • Ambiguously Evil: For most of the story, his allegiance is as mysterious as his identity. He claims to be with Mary’s parents and that they are safe, and that he will protect them and Mary, but refuses to divulge any specific details or his identity, which makes Mary suspicious of him and think he might be the Blackwood Butcher. In the true end, it is revealed that he is a member of a criminal organization, but he is genuinely an ally to Mary.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He's a mafia gangster, so this is a given.
  • The Dragon: He acts as the right-hand to Crowven, though neither are antagonistic to Mary.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Takes a bullet to save Mary from Twyla in the true ending.
  • Stranger Behind the Mask: One of the big mysteries of the story is the identity of the person behind the Mystery Number. In the true end, it is revealed to be Ovidius, a person who has never been seen before or referred to. However, he IS revealed to be a subordinate of Crowven who did everything on his orders.
  • Undying Loyalty: Showed this toward Crowven's father in a case of I Owe You My Life, and afterward displays it to Crowven himself as his successor. Since Crowven ordered him to keep Mary and her parents safe, he has this toward them as well by extension.

Side Characters

    Theodore
One of Crowven's friends.
  • The Alcoholic: He's shown to drink a lot. It gets to the point that he theorizes that his death was caused by him overdrinking.

    Zapara
One of Crowven's friends.
  • Faking the Dead: Does this briefly as a prank, pretending to have hanged herself in front of Mary, who does not take it well.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She can be quite abrasive and even goes so far as to scare Mary by pretending to be dead, but she does care about her friends, as shown when she is in tears after Theodore's death.

    Ed Wraithword
A nursing home patient who Mary encounters in Twila's route.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Mary only gets one conversation with him before he's murdered by the Butcher. She does get to meet him in the afterlife, but only briefly.
