Find a Trope:
openHero gives death in respond to forgiveness/HeelFaceTurn
An antagonist (not necessarily a villain) ends up going through an event where they attempt to forgive the hero or take a Heel–Face Turn, but unfortunately, the hero kills them. Queue everyone else either being in total shock or chastising that character. May overlap with What the Hell, Hero?.
openStealthy Foreshadowing
A detail that is seemingly completely irrelevant turns out to be an important piece of foreshadowing.
openShit gets real
A group of people are pretending (Acting, roleplaying, etc) until someone brings up a very personal theme and Shit gets real
Edited by IvannopenBreak the story breaker
There was a trope in TLP that I'm not sure ever launched where a powerful item in a work is destroyed so it won't later break the plot of the work. Was that ever launched?
openMeeting with a dead loved on in a near death experience?
Do we have a trope for this? Basically it's Near-Death Experience plus Dead Person Conversation, where the dying character sees/talks to a deceased loved one briefly before being revived or told by them "It's not your time". One example is in Batman Arkham City where Bruce (possibly) sees his dead parents briefly while dying from the toxin running through his veins. Whether this was a hallucination brought on by the toxin or really the ghosts of his parents is up for debate.
openPredator of the supernatural
A type of being that predates on superhumans or the setting's resident Witch Species. e.g. The "True Knot" from Doctor Sleep, the Inheritors from Spider-Man, or the Reapers from Blade II.
openOpposite of the RidiculouslyPotentExplosive trope
What is the opposite of the Ridiculously Potent Explosive: When an explosive goes off only a few meters away, but the characters suffer little to no damage from the blast, shrapnells and so on?
Edited by arisbochopen"You have changed, and I am not okay with that."
When changes took place (to a character B/lifestyle/environment), and a character A doesn't like the way things are and would love to see things go back to the way they used to be (which is not happening, to be frank)
openA weapon passed from generations
So, three tropes: The protagonist is a princess, and her kingdom is destroyed. The kingdom was destroyed by a king searching for a sword made from the strongest metal around, only found on this kingdom. The sword has been on this princess's family for generations, and is still considered the best weapon around.
I'm curious about the tropes about the sword and the strongest metal around. The third trope would be Doomed Hometown, even if its an entire kingdom?
openNever Meet Your Fans
Is there a trope like a reverse of Broken Pedestal where the person on the pedestal is disappointed with the people looking up to him (not necessarily to the point of Your Approval Fills Me with Shame though)?
For instance, the author of a book with a strong political message goes to a convention for the first time, and none of the fans he meets are fans of the book itself: they ask questions about points he thought were obvious or extremely trivial, ask about memetic aspects he knows nothing about, ask for his autograph on the off-chance that he becomes famous in which case a signed book will be more valuable, have only peripheral interests like shipping or Just Here for Godzilla, no one cares about the political message or are outright Rooting for the Empire, etc.
openConditional, non-transformation change in appearance
In Wasteful Days of High School Girls, Yaoi Fangirl Akane "Ota" Kikuchi has the tendency to have her appearance changed:
- If Ota spots a prospective male pairing, her character art would become extremely simplified to the point he classmates couldn't recognize her. That is before her eyes start morphing as well, and she even has a special name for this "mode".
This is currently listed under Off-Model, but I doubt it's that trope (despite definitively name-checked). I once thought about Nonstandard Character Design, but it doesn't seem to really cover temporary changes like this. It's not a transformation, either. So what is it?
openAct of Status Quo
When the continued existence of the status quo can only be attributed to an act of God.
Examples:
- In an episode of Miraculous Ladybug, a fake Ladybug has ahold of Cat Noir’s ring, while it is still technically on his finger. When the real Ladybug turns up and pushes them apart, the fake could easily have kept ahold of the ring, deactivating his suit and revealing Cat Noir’s identity to the world, but he somehow manages to keep ahold of it.
- Phineas and Ferb: the likelihood that so many of their inventions could be hit by Doofenshmirtz’s -inators the moment before Linda comes home is astronomical.
- Spectacular Spider Man: Venom revealing Spider-Man’s secret identity should have had some lasting impact; instead, not a single person believes that Peter Parker could possibly be a superhero .
openThat one bug Videogame
Is there a trope for a bug that's not a Game-Breaking Bug but still really annoying?
openLoading screen shows tips to improve your game Videogame
Is there (or should there be) a trope for when the loading screen is used by the creator to display useful tips and hints regarding the gameplay?
openCast-wide GenerationXerox / LamarckWasRight
Do we have a trope for instances where Lamarck Was Right and/or Generation Xerox apply to an entire cast of main characters? Say, a series that are set decades/centuries/millenias apart, but feature an almost exactly the same cast, with similar character designs, names, personalities, and relationships?
openTheir true mind leaking through the influence
Someone's possessed, mind controlled, or succumbing into their "beastly" self (like werewolves). During (or before) their rampage, they have a moment where they say something in their mind before the influence get better of them (again).
What do we call this?
openWhat Did You Expect When You Name Him Killie McDeath?
Villain’s parents: Give their kid an obviously evil name Their kid: Turns out to be evil Parents: Surprised Pikachu face
Edited by AndermannopenFight/Murder at a funeral
Is there a trope that describes when a fight or even murder happens at a funeral? I've combed through the list of funeral tropes and didn't find something like that.
...and tries to take revenge on her lover in his father stead (his father doesn't know and wouldn't/doesn't approve)?
