You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
The Spider-Man one is an example of Cassandra Truth, not status quo. It'd only be status quo if everyone did believe Brock, yet somehow forgot about Peter's secret identity by the next episode.
True, but the idea that no one believed him doesn’t make much sense. There had to have been at least thousands of conspiracy theorists who, after getting their first real lead, would at least check to see if he was telling the truth.
Edited by CurtisMarauderJust Status Quo Is God - the implausibility of things staying the way they are is a key part of that trope.
When the continued existence of the status quo can only be attributed to an act of God.
Examples:
- In an episode of Miraculous Ladybug, a fake Ladybug has ahold of Cat Noir’s ring, while it is still technically on his finger. When the real Ladybug turns up and pushes them apart, the fake could easily have kept ahold of the ring, deactivating his suit and revealing Cat Noir’s identity to the world, but he somehow manages to keep ahold of it.
- Phineas and Ferb: the likelihood that so many of their inventions could be hit by Doofenshmirtz’s -inators the moment before Linda comes home is astronomical.
- Spectacular Spider Man: Venom revealing Spider-Man’s secret identity should have had some lasting impact; instead, not a single person believes that Peter Parker could possibly be a superhero .
