Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Ask the Tropers is for:
- • General questions about the wiki, how it works, and how to do things.
- • Reports of problems with wiki articles, or requests for help with wiki articles.
- • Reports of misbehavior or abuse by other tropers.
Ask the Tropers is not for:

Ask the Tropers:
openBarbarian Film
Accidentally pressed enter key too early while typing my reason so whoops. But my problem lies in here:
So in Barbarian, someone put this
>Politically Incorrect Hero/Deliberate Values Dissonance: AJ greets an old friend by shouting "WHAT UP, FAGGOT!?" into the phone, which is completely and utterly unacceptable from a straight male in 2022, but for a man who acts like a relic from the 2000s, it's extremely fitting and makes it clear that he is hopelessly stuck in a state of arrested development.
I fixed it to this
AJ greets an old friend by shouting "WHAT UP, FAGGOT!?" into the phone, in banter that is meant to be playful. Both sides are okay with it nonetheless, since the friend banters back in jest.
I wanted it to mean since somebody used a word, doesn't automatically mean its not okay. Sure, the word might has bad connations now but in this scene, its basically just like a woman greeting another woman with a "what's up, bitch?!" and they laugh it off and hug.
I could put the edit back if the trope is used wrong.
Edited by RaddishesopenRecent edits to YMMV.TheQuarry
Today, while skimming through recently edited pages, I came across this entry on the YMMV page for The Quarry.
- Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male:
- Emma's behavior toward Jacob and Nick is treated as mildly toxic and immature by the narrative at best, usually ignored or dismissed, and at worst outright justified or praised by said narrative and the other characters. This is especially egregious given that not only is her entire arc about her right to boundaries and consent, but that said arc is actively used on numerous occasions to justify the sexual assault, and a good chunk of the abuse. See Unintentionally Unsympathetic.
- Kaitlyn is also deeply emotionally abusive to Jacob in what screentime they get together—mainly the first scene outside the van, and her engineering chances for his abusive ex to hurt him on purpose—and the game treats it as light friendly ribbing with a side of Tough Love. This gets even worse with her line about how she 'made him let her practice french kissing on him' when they were younger. You could read it as unfortunate phrasing for 'I asked and he agreed,' but considering how incredibly vicious she gets about any attempt he makes to set boundaries with her or tell her she's being hurtful, the way the narrative treats Nick's assault, and that she both arranged for it to happen and sat around laughing with the others about it after...
As it was not a YMMV trope, I removed it from the page. However, I wasn't quite sure whether or not I should move it to the main page. Furthermore, when observing other recent edits (e.g. Alternate Aesop Interpretation, Unintentionally Unsympathetic), I found that two tropers (ovskii and Carnivorous Mog - the latter of whom was responsible for adding the above edit) had recently added a variety of edits to the page; all focused on arguably bashing the characters of both Emma and Kaitlyn, to the point that ovskii removed an example of Ron the Death Eater for being "contradictory to other entries." Said "other entries" were all added by one trope: Carnivorous Mog.
Granted, I will admit that I don't disagree with everything that the two have added, and that they do raise some good points in certain regards. With that being said, a part of me can't help but shake the feeling that this is potentially character bashing. The Quarry has also only been available in full to public for three months, so I'm also not sure if these kind of edits should be added just yet. As such, I wanted to get a second opinion on whether or not these edits were indeed acceptable, or if they should be edited or removed.
Edited by WiryAiluropodineopen Can character to be Mellow Fellow and The Stoic at the same time?
Good Evening, dear administration TV Tropes, I have one question: Can a character be a Stoic and a Mellow Fellow at the same time? Or can the character only be a Mellow Fellow or only a Stoic?
Edited by crazysamaritanresolved Is it ok to use the Sandbox/ to fix drafts of yarded tropes?
Pretty much what it says on the title.
I thought it was fine but then someone PM'd me that I was wrong. However, that person's main argument is that defunct tropes must be cut from everywhere in the wiki (except if it's a personal sandbox for keeping tabs on them).
Do drafts (from the TLP) deemed unworkable count as defunct tropes?
Also, if the Sandbox/ is not the place to fix drafts, then where should I do that then?
openWeird edit on an Administrivia page
Administrivia. This Is A Wiki has this opening text added seemingly unilaterally by The Living Drawing earlier this year:
Should this be here? And if not, can I delete it?
openCan you remove pages from the Pages Needing an Entry Pimp page?
So, reading over the Pages Needing an Entry Pimp, I plan to crosswick a work or two there and have noticed that Azur Lane had already reached its wick goal.
So if a work on that page has reached its goal, would it be alright to remove it from the page?
openReviving a Discarded Trope
If the trope you're trying to create fails to be launched in the Trope Launch Pad and gets discarded, can you create a revised version of that trope for the Trope Launch Pad?
openTrope Misuse/Split?
So where would I go to ask about having a trope page split into two different tropes? I’ve noticed that Artistic License – Law is supposed to be about courtroom procedure, but also contains examples of general law and legislative stuff too.
openWeblink format issues
I have created a page for an obscure radio play, but in my attempts to provide a link to where the media can be listened to, it doesn't register properly.
I tried the standard "put link between brackets and type 'here' a space after the link", but it did not result in the link being hidden by "here". I tried simply showing the link in parenthesis, but that didn't work either.
The link is supposed to end in a period to work correctly, but none of the ways I've tried typing the link appear to register the last period. I presently do not know any other sources for the media in question.
openDub name un-change
If a character went through a Dub Name Change in the source material's translation but has their original name in an adaptation, which name should I use if I were to trope the adaptation? If I use the original names, how should I indicate that I'm using the original names? (It's already listed on the character page, but I'd like to put it on the adaptation's work page for clarity's sake)
Edited by k5972openIs this trope being misused?
Is this being misused as I feel like more people would tend to recognize the former for Ghostbusters and the latter could go either way. But I thought this trope was dealing with recognizing people in a medium before they struck it big. Retroactive Recognition: The Shady Acres doctor is Mayor Lenny and Ray Finkle's mom is the New York librarian from the first film.
openFan work with "riffed" index? Web Original
I found Retsupurae and it has index of "Works Riffed on by Retsupurae" listing works featured on their channel. This isn't kosher, is it?
Edited by KuruniopenWalking Spoiler
The discussion on Walking Spoiler seemed to come to consensus that the definition remains the same (the character's entire existence is a spoiler, not just most aspects of the character), but the first few sentences of the description still go with the "most aspects" definition. Can it be changed?
open Is BoxOfficeBomb really tropeworthy, even as Trivia?
I see Box Office Bomb a lot in the indexes sections of films, alongside more meaningful indexes like "films of the XX decade" and their respective genres and franchises/creators. It seems kinda strange to consider their flop status as a core part of the film's identity, which the status among the indexes makes it seem like it is - it's not like we have a "made back its budget" index. I'd also say, compared to the other end-of-page indexes, this is the least useful, 'cause unlike the filmography of certain companies or the films of a genre, people generally don't specifically seek out Box Office Bombs when browsing for movies.
I'm wondering if Box Office Bomb might be People Sit In Chairs when not in-universe.
openFive Nights at Wario's Videogame
Would it be ok if I tried to recreate the Character page for Five Nights at Wario's? I noticed it's been down for a while now and I was just curious if that would be acceptable, especially with the new information wwwWario recently put out.
openWhere does PlayerTic go? Videogame
This Player Tic example is in YMMV.Devil May Cry.
- Player Tic: Playing Dante in 4 and 5 and just amusing yourself by going into all of his styles one after the other quickly to listen to Dante rapidly saying the beginnings of his declarations of the style's names is a meme.
Apart from probably needing some simple rewrite (it reads like a run-on sentence to me) or update, the example is indeed a valid Player Tic as it does happen in the fandom.
My only concern is that the lack of any banner on top of the Player Tic page makes it treated like an objective trope (meaning it shouldn't be placed on a YMMV page), so I'm not sure if the example has to remain on the YMMV page. Looking at the related pages, Player Tic is listed under Administrivia.Tropes Needing TRS, but even that Administrivia page sounds confused as to where Player Tic examples should go.
I'm looking at Quotes. The Last Resurrection and it's pretty intimidating. And was added this year.
Suggestions? Cut for not being in-game quotes (another question today asked if these are ever needed) or those just lack cleaning and context?
