Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Ask the Tropers is for:
- • General questions about the wiki, how it works, and how to do things.
- • Reports of problems with wiki articles, or requests for help with wiki articles.
- • Reports of misbehavior or abuse by other tropers.
Ask the Tropers is not for:

openDub Name Change mass deletions
Wayyyy mass deleted a vast majority of examples of Dub Name Change (especially on their newly-created subpage DubNameChange.Japanese To English) calling them ZCEs even as they were legitimate examples (most were "X in Japanese was called Y in English", which is sufficient context since it self-explanatorily demonstrates that a name change did occur).
Then he posted a big bold notice stating not to add every name change across different versions of a work. This baffles me, since it's not a trope omnipresent enough that straight examples should be banned (since not all works will change character names in translation and not everyone's name even if they did).
The folderization is appreciated but the examples deletion is way too far.
This was not the only time Wayyyy has wiped an examples section out of the blue.
Edited by Albert3105openTeleportation/Time Travel Excludes Clothing?
Are these different enough/are there enough examples for these to be made into their own tropes? Or are they too similar to Shapeshifting Excludes Clothing and Out-of-Clothes Experience? I won't try to put these on the Launch Pad unless I'm confident enough that they can stand on their own.
openSeparating Mount and Blade: Bannerlord from the Mount and Blade page Videogame
The Mount & Blade page is beyond crowded. Currently, it contains tropes for every single M&B work ever released, including Bannerlord. That's four games and a DLC in one page. Bannerlord needs to be moved to its own page as soon as possible. Anyone is up for that? I'll do it, but I don't know how to add a colon to the title.
Edited by KBZheng123openCreating a New Video Game Page Videogame
Can anyone help create a new page for an upcoming indie game? It's called "Eldest Souls" a boss rush soulslike RPG developed by Fallen Flag Studio, and it's releasing on Steam and Nintendo Switch this summer.
openPage title name fix
Where can I report a page with a non-namespace-related misspelled name?
Edited by jandn2014resolved Full Metal Jacket: UnbuiltTrope for DrillSergeantNasty? Film
As the entry on the Drill Sergeant Nasty page notes, Gunnery Sergeant Hartman is the Trope Codifier, but at the same time he also deconstructs the trope, because he is actually a genuinely bad example of how a Drill Sergeant should perform his duties, and even his own actor — a retired real-life Drill Sergeant — noted that he'd have been in serious trouble if he'd ever acted like that. So, doesn't this make Full Metal Jacket an example of the Unbuilt Trope when it comes to Drill Sergeant Nasty? In fact, double-checking, it's actually listed on the Unbuilt Trope page for live-action film, so shouldn't it be edited to address that connection on the Drill Sergeant Nasty page?
Edited by WanderingBrowseropenChris Carter Effect misuse and rumor
My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic
- The Chris Carter Effect: This was noticed by veteran viewers who have watched the show since it's inception. Many interesting settings, plots and characters were practically never followed upon their debut episodes over the course of the show. Some of them got A Day in the Limelight but many of those wound up only opening up even more plot threads. This is due to the writing staff being gradually replaced over the years. Not to mention, a very famous rumour that newer writers aren't allowed to read up notes from previous writers or even watch the very show they were supposed to write for spread among the community. The massive lists of Fanfic Fuel, They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character and They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot in the various YMMV subpages by the end of Season 9 only served to enforce this trope.
I think this is misuse as The Chris Carter Effect is when audiences lose interest because it never resolved its plots. This is not following up on it’s plots, a separate issue. And if they were this “ by the end of Season 9” the series finale, it’s misuse as they would have stopped caring before the work ended.
And this is the first I’ve heard the rumor despite following the mainstream fan-sites. Is this the sort of accusation that needs something more substantive than rumor?
openWeird editing
I just wanted to let people know that Wayyyy, in the process of alphabetizing Disappointed by the Motive, removed every single quote in the folders as well a great many examples (leaving only one example per work in most cases), and added a bunch of spaces. I fixed it up, but I wonder if they've done anything else like that because it doesn't really fit with how we do things here.
openWayyyy too many empty lines (yes, pun intended)
Wayyyy has sorted examples in sevaral pages, which by itself is a great contribution to the wiki.
However, there's a major issue that comes along with this sorting, and it's that examples are now spaced out by empty lines. I replied them asking them not to add these lines, but they refused to do so, arguing that it makes the examples "easier to read". These spaces are making the trope pages too awkward-looking and large, and the fact the troper won't stop doing this comes off as disruptive.
openAlternate Character Interpretation misuse?
Star Trek: Enterprise Relaunch
- Alternate Character Interpretation: Section 31 are presented in a very different light for most of the series. At this point in their history, they seem genuinely noble and more like a legitimate intelligence agency, rather than the insanely paranoid genocidal criminals of later eras.
Alternate Character Interpretation is audiences having different interpretation than the narrative intends. This sounds like the intended interpretation of the work/Adaptation Deviation.
Should intentional changes like this be removed as misuse? What about fan works which take common ACI and make it intentional?
I was thinking "Fanwork Personality Change" might be a new trope to cover intentional fanwork changes that deal with the Ron the Death Eater / Draco in Leather Pants issue that keeps cropping up (if it's how the fanwork portrays them it's not YMMV).
Edited by Ferot_DreadnaughtopenWhy is Invoked a disambig?
I notice that Invoked is a disambig to Invoked Trope and Intended Audience Reaction. This is inconsisntent with all the other types of Playing with a Trope; enforced redirects to Enforced Trope, subverted redirects to Subverted Trope, averted redirects to Averted Trope, Zig-Zagged redirects to Zig-Zagging Trope...
While I get how there could be confusion, Invoked Trope already has a huge bolded warning about not confusing with Intended Audience Reaction. I think invoked would be better as a redirect.
Edit: invoked also has 1663 wicks, so it's not really behaving like a good disambig.

open Poor English edits
Hi, all. The troper Palestinian has been making a number of edits that are very difficult to parse and I feel they may need some serious aid with this, in addition to cleaning up some of these.
openWattpad's YMMV page
A vast majority of the examples on YMMV.Wattpad appear to be troping general works hosted on the site. Since examples are not general, should they be removed?
openWhy is "The Platform" locked? Film
I was looking forwards to adding a dozen tropes to the spanish film "the platform" but for whatever reason the page is edit locked. Is this just what happens with really new entries? Or was the original creator just too defensive over his/her work?
opendieseldragons
Okay, a chain of events; dieseldragons added a huge Wall of Text misuse of Character Derailment complaining about Steven's character arc in YMMV.Steven Universe Future before removing it themselves with a snarky edit reason about subcategorizing opinions. They then added it to CharacterDerailment.Western Animation (it's since been removed) with another snarky and bitter edit reason.
I sent them a complaining notifier after the fact, but I just wanted to leave this here in case they edit warred or put it somewhere else.

How do we make a Creator page for someone named "Red"...
Do we just do it? It just feels weird giving a Creator page to such a common-ish word name, but WebAnimation.Overly Sarcastic Productions should not host irrelevant info such as what else one of its creators does.
That info should go on the Creator's page only, I think.
