Find a Trope:
openGeographical error? Music
Trying to find a trope for Music.Little Mix:
- On a radio station website's interview with Little Mix, one of the members said they'd done an arduous road trip to Nottingham, 100 miles away from London. But the math says that, by road, Nottingham is either 130 or 148 miles away by road, contradicting what one of their members said.
and also would this be an example of Writers Cannot Do Math or another trope entirely:
- If you put your postcode on the Auto Trader UK website, the distance quoted is "as the crow flies" rather than by road. This has proven controversial on some car websites.
Is this a case of Writers Cannot Do Math, Artistic License – Geography, Artistic License – Statistics, Not Drawn to Scale or an entirely different trope before I put this on the work page itself?
Edited by Merseyuser1openNot "The Remant" or "Renegade Splinter Faction"- do we have this one?
Okay. So I was writing a short story and I was trying to research some of the plot points on this site and couldn't find anything that seemed like a good match.
Basically, in this situation, there WAS a government, but it no longer exists due to an apocalyptic war. There is an isolated community. One day,non-local characters show up, in an antagonist role, who CLAIM to be The Remnant, except that's a lie to justify them assuming authority over the locality or making a demand of the locals. For context: the antagonists appear at first to be soldiers but it's heavily implied they obtained the uniforms from dead people, because they don't fit well and they lack division insignia. They claim to be military, but the protagonist is a veteran and doesn't believe them due to recognizing the signs of the Mildly Military trope and a few other contextual oddities (mismatched weapons, body language that is not like soldiers). They are simply using invoking the previous authority for their own purposes. Which also means this doesn't seem to fit Renegade Splinter faction either. Or does it? Is it a borderline example of either? Or is there another trope I'm missing.
I wasn't sure if this was covered under The Remnant or Renegade Splinter Faction or if it maybe should be split. Not sure what it could be called.
I think this might have been a plotline on "Jericho" also but I don't remember that show well, they might have been Private Military Contractors.
Edited by FTDopenIronic weakness
Is there a trope for this (such as a creature who shoots fire but is really vulnerable to fire himself?) I looked and couldn't find anything, which surprised me as it seems unlikely no such trope exists.
openClassic X!
Not sure if I can explain this trope well, but this trope is when the cute character (often a kid or the Team Pet) does something funny or cheeky near or at the end of the movie and another character goes "Oh, you!!" and everyone laughs (not always resulting in an "Everybody Laughs" Ending).
The one example I can think of is how Minion at the end of Megamind pretended to die in a comedic way- obviously faking it. Afterwards, Megamind goes "Classic Minion. Don’t give me that face. Brilliant, that little face. Look at that face!"
Note: i'm not looking for actual faked death tropes.

Currently, the first example for Fictional Video Game in Manga.New Game reads:
- Fictional Video Game:
- Fairies Storynote Fairy Stories in the licensed manga, the series which inspired Aoba to join a game company in the first place. It's inspired by the Valkyrie Profile series. Common traits include:
- "Mythological creature" plus "written account" naming scheme.
- Gorgeous fantasy character designs by Ko (and his brother Yo) Yoshinari.
- Seven years after the first Valkyrie Profile, mangaka Shotaro Tokuno joined tri-Ace and worked on the sequel—the same time span between Aoba playing Fairies Story and joining Eagle Jump to work on its sequel.
- Fairies Storynote Fairy Stories in the licensed manga, the series which inspired Aoba to join a game company in the first place. It's inspired by the Valkyrie Profile series. Common traits include:
However, I found anything past the first full-stop unnecessary for the purpose of that trope. But does it belong to a different trope?
openProphetic Painting
A person who can see into the future draws an event that will happen.
For example, Santiago from Heroes can see into the future as he paints it and th Pandorica Opens painting from Doctor Who.
Sometimes the paintings aren't a result of someone being prophetic. They're just foreshadowing.
Edited by KingOfStickersopenClothing Design Montage
A scene or montage where a character is creating a new outfit for themselves or others, often using things just laying around.
openNPC danger bypass Videogame
Mostly a videogame trope, this is where despite the danger on an area, despite the difficultly your character had getting to a location, an NPC can get their with no problems. A justified trope in that if they couldn't do this it would require an escort mission or the chance they could die on the way there.
Examples
- Prey (2017): Two NPC's Mikhaila Ilyushin and Dayo Igwe find their way to your office if you rescue them. Both are unarmed and one only recently regained the ability to breath properly and walk. The path to get there is often filled with enemies and in on case an instant death mine rigged to the lift panel.
openDo we have a trope name for this scenario?
A tragic supporting villain character began their dark career after a terrible tragedy in their life. Maybe someone in their family was murdered or their whole family was murdered. Maybe a friend was murdered. Maybe something was stolen from them. Maybe they were framed for a crime. Whatever it was, it broke them. Then, in steps the Big Bad, who is a corrupter/satanic archetype. They offer to help the victim get their justice, or get revenge. Or maybe they use the victims trauma or grief to sway them into becoming a supporting villain. The victim accepts the deal and they become the supporting villain they are in the story... until this happens.
At some point later in the story, often near or during the climax, the audience, and often the heroes, and sometimes even the supporting villain, learn that the Big Bad was the one responsible for the supporting villains tragedy. They killed the family member, or the whole family. They killed the friend. They framed the supporting villain for a crime. And sometimes they even frame a different party for the tragedy. This is a clear MEH line crosser, and shows how the Big Bad is as crafty and cunning as they are dangerous.
Examples include Mortal Kombat, Quan Chi being the murderer of Scorpions family and clan. Then he framed Bi-Han and the Lin Qui for the murder and told Scorpion, now a damned soul that he could help him get revenge. All he had to do was become an undead ninja who would serve Quan Chi. Or the Yu-Gi-Oh! Doma/Legendary Dragons arc. All three of Dartz's henchmen suffered tragedy's. Losing family in a storm, or lsoing family in a war, framing one of them for a crime, and being outright abandoned. Then in steps Dartz who fans their grief and resentment towards society, fate, or reveals that Gozaburo Kaiba, CEO of Kaibacorp was responsible for their plights, and offers to help them get revenge on the whole world. But, it turns out Dartz sent the storm that took away Raphael's family, he framed Gozaburo Kaiba for invading Alastir's country via taking Gozaburo's appearance and using Kaiba Corp with his disguise, and framing Valen.
And both villains did all that to get their henchmen. Do we have a name for this trope? And if not, any suggestions on what should it be called?
openCover up, then admiting truth
Is there a trope where one character tries to cover up something, then gets prodded by another character to tell the truth? Example being Character A who tried to make moves on his girlfriend but she threw him out of the house and when talking to his friend who tries to question the date, Character A says "A gentleman does not tell". Character B asks "She threw you out didn't she?" Then Character A admitted that's what happened
openNews Ticker Gag
A news ticker has nonsensical stuff written in it. For example, the news ticker acts shocked over the current events over whats happening, maybe even shouting curse words. Or maybe it's just babbling nonsense talking about irrelevant random things or keysmashes.
Edited by KingOfStickersopenTimelaspe of character bored or looking around
Character is looking for something or is just bored, a timelaspe of sorts shows the same unchanging area but multiple shots of the character in different places in the frame, either looking for the thing or trying to entertain him or herself. This is the only example I can remember at this point but there are definitely more.
Edited by Troper48openNot Good With Children
Do we have a gender-neutral version of Maternally Challenged? I'm checking to see if this draft is a duplicate of something we already have.
openFandom / fanwork trope? Live Action TV
Do we have a trope similar to George Lucas Altered Version or Re-Cut, except the original work is edited by a fan of the franchise rather than the creator?
It's probably not a Fan Fic Tropes trope, and I doubt Original Flavour fits, so what is the trope, if there is one?
I'm not sure here...
Edited by Merseyuser1openAsking about a task during the task Live Action TV
Is there a trope for when one of the characters in a group waits until the audience sees them right in the middle of some sort of task to ask why they're doing it, for the audience's benefit (they get to hear the other character dish out the explanation)? When it would clearly make more sense for that character to have asked that question long before the group set out on that task, or before they decided to go along with the plan in the first place?
Edited by freerangewateropenMistaken For Hallucination
Do we have an index or a Super-Trope for tropes like You Can See That, Right? or No More for Me or (this TLP draft) Back to the Hospital? I tried looking for it in Mistaken for Index and didn't find it.
open"Take your kids to work" episode Western Animation
Usually seen in cartoons, in this episode the parents take their children with them to work. An alternative could be "Take your daughter to work". I've seen this in The Loud House and Lampshaded once in an episode of Phineas and Ferb by Vanessa.
If I'm not mistaken, this is not very common in media nowdays, so it could very well be a Dead Horse Trope.
openNaturally Talented Protagonist
Is there any tropes for when the protagonist is just naturally talented at their field? This is usually musical- protagonists in music-related works have the tendency to just be super talented at music despite being amateurs who are usually too shy to actually express their talent, and often times this also means the antagonists are either not as talented as they are, or do happen to be decently talented but are more arrogant about their abilities and that brings them down in the end.
Is there's not, I might take this to the Sounding Board to see if it's actually a tropeworthy idea.
Is there an index for delays and lateness? I tried looking through the indexes of the following tropes and didn't find it...
