Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

About the other two Danmachi ones:

Phryne Jamil is the amazoness captain of the Ishtar familia. She is a hideous, frog-like woman who is completely Ax-Crazy, loving to cause as much carnage in battle as she can. However, her most notable, and evil, act is her repeated kidnapping of men to drag them into her personal dungeon, where she tortured and raped them until they are broken, bloody, traumatized, and sexually impotent, in addition to pumped full of aphrodisiacs. She tries to do the same to the protagonist Bell. And this is played completely seriously- Double Standard Rape: Female on Male is completely Averted here, as her assaults are not played for comedy. And she carries no real loyalty for Ishtar- she is loyal only to her delusion that she is the World's Most Beautiful Woman.

Actually, @Overlord_2018, now that I am writing this, I feel like Phryne could be a keeper herself. Ishtar commits horrendous atrocities as you outlined, but Phryne does her fair share too. They both do enough with what they have. Maybe you can EP Phryne?

The other one is Enyo, who wants to destroy Onario. He describes what will happen as beautiful madness, and he does not care about others expect as tools, but that is all I know about him. Honestly, it feels like HE is the one who fails the heinousness standard.

Alright, I wanted to update this write up to include some of his more specific crimes in the film.

  • The Crow: Top Dollar, a Detroit crime boss who established himself as the supreme ruler of all criminal activity in the city, is a chaotic arsonist who enjoys destruction and murder purely for its own sake. He organizes Devil's Night, in which buildings are burned down all throughout the city. He orders people terrorized out of their homes, and one such couple includes Eric Draven and his fiancée Shelley, who are both violently murdered by his goons, with Shelley also being raped. When Eric attacks Top Dollar's associate Gideon, he shows Gideon the eyes of one of his previous victims before killing him. He eventually becomes tired of the profit reaped from the arson and other activities, and announces his plans at a criminal convention to burn down everything. After Eric attacks the convention, Top Dollar captures his young friend Sarah in order to lead him into a confrontation where he tries to throw Sarah off a roof before taunting Eric about his and Shelly's deaths.

  • Getter Robo Go: Professor Alrich zu Lando is an Evil Overlord whose mission is to Take Over the World. Starting as a scientist working in a joint project in the Arctic known as the Vega Zone, Lando takes control over it by brainwashing the scientists to turn them into cyborgs. Years later, Lando starts his war of conquest with mass murder, attacking Canadian and American soldiers. Determined to obtain the Getter Robo Go from Japan, Lando has no compunction using nuclear weapons on a Japanese city and threatening more attacks and the killing of as many people as necessary, all borne out of his desire to rule the world.

I'm using Lando because it seems to be the "real" translation of the name. Gosh, dealing with names and translations in manga is a pain.

King Zarkon from Voltron: The Third Dimension

The Show: A Broad Strokes sequel to the original Voltron, the cartoon has the Voltron Force come out of retirement to combat the new Doom Empire led by King Zarkon, his son, Prince Lotor, and their witch ally, Haggar.

Who They Are: The ruler of the Crimson Quadrant-based world known as Planet Doom, King Zarkon seeks to conquer all of the known universe with his Doom Empire's Fleet of Doom. Opposing him is the Galaxy Alliance, headquartered in the Galaxy Garrison on Earth, and the Voltron Force, a specialized team consisting of Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge, and Allura, princess of the planet Arus. Zarkon's crimes include razing a young Lance's village, killing Lance's parents and numerous others, and seducing Haggar into helping him assassinate her ex-lover and Allura's father, King Alfor of Arus, by bombarding the Castle of Lions. After Haggar killed the king, Zarkon, who had promised to make Haggar his queen in exchange for her help, betrayed her, transforming her into a withered old crone who is seemingly bound to serve him and Lotor.

During the final battle between the Doom Empire and the Voltron Force, the Doom Fleet was decimated by Voltron. Mangled during the altercation, Lotor, before being arrested by the Galaxy Alliance, managed to hide Castle Doom and all of its newly-developed Doom Weapons in the Dream Dimension with Haggar. Lotor, who was converted into a cyborg to save his life, was then imprisoned in Bastille-12, while Zarkon, allegedly in despair over his son's near-death experience, pulled a Heel–Face Turn and joined the Galaxy Alliance (now led by the cyborg Amalgamus) and became its Minister of Peace, helping to expand the ranks of the Galaxy Alliance to nine-hundred different worlds, all of which are connected directly to Amalgamus. In reality, Zarkon was merely bidding his time, gathering the resources and knowledge necessary to help him reestablish the Doom Empire and get revenge on the Voltron Force, which he reprogrammed Amalgamus to irrational hate in order to stymie them and the Galaxy Alliance.

What They Do:

  • 1. Zarkon accompanies Amalgamus, Allura, and Keith to Bastille-12, to once again try and learn the location of Castle Doom from Lotor. Zarkon acts contemptuous towards his son, who refuses to talk about Castle Doom or the Doom Weapons. Zarkon later springs Lotor from Bastille-12.
  • 2-4. As Lotor teams-up with the space pirates Queequeg and Lafitte, commits destructive raids, tracks down Haggar and Castle Doom, annexes territory, etc. all the while dangling the prospect of peace talks over the heads of the Galaxy Alliance, Zarkon feigns being the reasonable counterpart to the Obstructive Bureaucrat Amalgamus, continually vouching for the Voltron Force as he secretly directs Lotor and Haggar.
  • 5. Zarkon begins acting directly, sending the Voltron Force an encoded transmission about an attack planned by Lotor. The Voltron Force interrupts the attack, but is reprimanded by Amalgamus and Zarkon, who claim to have no knowledge of the transmission, and decommissioned on the basis that they have once again ruined planned peace talks with Lotor. To show that he is still on the Voltron Force's side, Zarkon convinces Amalgamus to grant the team a pardon if they get the mining operation that was the target of Lotor's attack back online, secretly intending for the entire team to be slaughtered by mine-dwelling space lice mutated by Lotor and Haggar. With the Voltron Force preoccupied, Lotor and Haggar launch an invasion of Arus, but they are thwarted by the Voltron Force, which is reinstated by Amalgamus, to the barely-concealed displeasure of Zarkon.
  • 6. Hunk, resentful of Pidge treating him like Dumb Muscle, storms off to be alone, with his sojourn being reported to Lotor and Haggar by Zarkon. Haggar and Lotor magically corrupt Hunk and his Yellow Lion and turn them against the rest of the Voltron Force while Zarkon brings a Robeast (disguised as Hunk) into the Galaxy Garrison. The Robeast abducts Almagamus and brings him to Lotor, but he and Hunk are saved by the Voltron Force.
  • 7. Zarkon instructs Lotor and Haggar to abduct Judge Armistice in order to disrupt a peace conference and cause an intergalactic war to break out, not caring that Lotor also intends to force the judge to marry him and Allura.
  • 8. Planet Geo, abandoned since the space lice incident, is being used as a hatchery for Dominus, an extradimensional lizard mutated into an antimatter monster by Lotor. Zarkon tries in vain to keep the Voltron Force away from Planet Geo. After Dominus hatches and is sent on a rampage by Lotor and Haggar, Zarkon tries to passive-aggressively pressure Amalgamus into surrendering to Lotor.
  • 9. A week long celebration is held in honor of Zarkon being awarded the Medal of Peace.
  • 10. Keith overhears Zarkon drawing up plans with Lotor, but before he can reveal that the two are in cahoots to the rest of the Voltron Force, he is magically driven insane by Haggar. With the Voltron Force weakened, Lotor and Zarkon are able to conquer Planet Theta. Zarkon personally taunts the deranged Keith, describing how he will soon destroy the Galaxy Alliance, take over the Castle of Lions, and force Allura to marry Lotor in order to become the legitimate and unquestioning ruler of Arus. The Black Lion heals Keith, and the Voltron Force is able to thwart the assault on the Galaxy Garrison, though Keith loses his memories of Zarkon being allied with Lotor.
  • 11. Nova-99 is going supernova, and will wipe out its entire star system, which has 8.6 billion inhabitants who are unable to be evacuated by the Galaxy Alliance. Amalgamus and Zarkon assign Pidge to stop Nova-99 from going supernova using a new substance unearthed on Planet Glacia called thunder ice, and to "help" Pidge, Zarkon provides him with a cyborg assistant called I.G.O.R. When Amalgamus begins singing the praises of the Voltron Force, Keith spies on Zarkon reprogramming him to once again irrationally dislike the team, and discovers that I.G.O.R. is really a Battle Cyborg. I.G.O.R. forces all of Pidge's other Droid assistants to mangle themselves, freezes the Green Lion, and leaves Pidge (who sabotages the thunder ice delivery system that he had created, in order to stop it from being used as a weapon by I.G.O.R., Lotor, and Zarkon) to freeze on Planet Glacia. The rest of the Voltron Force rescues Pidge, destroys I.G.O.R. and Haggar's newest Robeast, and uses a thunder ice-infused Voltron to stop the eruption of Nova-99.
  • 13. Zarkon rebuilds I.G.O.R. and meets up with Lotor and Haggar, followed by Keith and Lance. The spies are spotted by Haggar, whose usefulness Zarkon was beginning to question, and forced to flee, their recordings of Zarkon's treasonous meeting destroyed by Haggar. In order to save face with Amalgamus and the Galaxy Alliance, Zarkon pretends to be Lotor's hostage, and claims that the Voltron Force screwed up his plans to use I.G.O.R. against Lotor. Zarkon has Lotor request the surrender of certain moons from Amalgamus in exchange for Zarkon, or else the Doom Fleet led by a "captured" and "reprogrammed" I.G.O.R. will be unleashed on the Galaxy Alliance. While Lotor gave a time limit for the surrender, Zarkon orders that it be ignored, and that I.G.O.R. be immediately sent after the Galaxy Alliance. The Voltron Force is able to wipe out I.G.O.R.'s forces, but I.G.O.R. himself escapes back to Planet Doom, and the team are no closer to proving the treachery of Zarkon to Amalgamus.
  • 15-18. "Voltron Land" has opened on Troika-1, one of the three Troika Moons. The moons' have fifty billion inhabitants, and are being visited by the Voltron Force. Haggar brings the Robeast attractions in Voltron Land to life in order to draw the Voltron Force away from the Troika Moons, which are then surrounded by the entirety of the Fleet of Doom. Lotor declares that he will wipe out the moons and everyone on them, but promises to surrender, release his father, and hand over control of the Doom Fleet if the Galaxy Alliance destroys the Voltron Lions. The Voltron Force (with the exception of Lance, who is arrested for trying to rescue the Voltron Lions) agrees to allow the Voltron Lions to be destroyed by the Galaxy Alliance. The deal was a farce, though, and while the Troika Moons are saved (thanks to Galaxy Alliance satellites that immediately move into orbit around them) the Doom Fleet, which is ignoring Amalgamus's commands, is now on its way to the Galaxy Garrison. Zarkon covertly orders the robotic guards of Bastille-12 to summarily execute Lance before getting in touch with Lotor. Zarkon is annoyed by Lotor making a detour to Arus to abduct Allura, but goes on to say that their plan is working perfectly, and reveals that he has sabotaged the defenses of the Galaxy Garrison, making it ripe for invasion by the Doom Fleet. Zarkon teleports to Amalgamus when the Voltron Force tries to apprehend him, leaving them to be dealt with by I.G.O.R. The Voltron Force escapes from I.G.O.R. and breaks Lance out of Bastille-12. The Galaxy Garrison falls to the Doom Fleet, and Zarkon finally reveals his treachery to Amalgamus, who he orders scrapped by I.G.O.R. Zarkon then makes a galaxy-wide announcement about how, in the "temporary" absence of the "damaged" Amalgamus, he now controls the Galaxy Alliance. Amalgamus is converted into an arcade cabinet for the amusement of Zarkon, who blames the Voltron Force (who manage to recreate the Voltron Lions) for the destruction of the Galaxy Garrison.
  • 20. Zarkon digs up an archaic law that allows his best fighter to challenge the best fighter of the Voltron Force/"Lion Knights". Keith is unable to fight, so Allura picks Lance, while Zarkon chooses I.G.O.R. over Lotor. Lotor sabotages I.G.O.R. so that he will be the one to challenge Lance. Zarkon knew that Lotor would do this, he simply picked I.G.O.R. over him just to screw with Lotor. At any rate, Zarkon has no faith in Lotor, and the challenge is just a means to distract everyone while he and Haggar harvest a rare energy source from another dimension; the way that Zarkon intends to harvest the energy will damage the very dimensional fabric, something which he is warned about by Haggar. Ignoring Haggar's pleas for him to reconsider, Zarkon goes ahead with harvesting, endangering their entire home universe, not that he cares (Haggar: Zarkon! Stop this now, or there won't be anything left for you to rule!/Zarkon: YOU'RE! JUST! JEALOUS!) The Voltron Force is able to stop Zarkon.
  • 24. Amalgamus's security protocols are reversed in an attempt to get him to divulge secrets about the Voltron Force, though all this does is turn him into a Talkative Loon. After Lotor captures Pidge, Haggar uses her magic to get him to divulge classified information about the Voltron Lions. I.G.O.R. is instructed to decrypt the pilot recognition codes of Green Lion while Zarkon holds a press conference flouting the capture of Pidge in order to draw out the rest of the Voltron Force. When the Voltron Force shows up to rescue Pidge, Lotor, I.G.O.R., Queequeg, and Lafitte hijack the Red, Yellow, Blue, and Black Lions, but they are quickly reclaimed by Lance, Hunk, Allura, and Keith using their newly-established mental links with the Voltron Lions. Zarkon resorts to trying to use the Doom Fleet and the Green Lion to take out the other Voltron Lions, but Pidge, who had previously been unable to telepathically link with Green Lion, is able to establish a mental bond with it, allowing the team to form Voltron and escape from Galaxy Garrison.
  • 25. Zarkon does another propaganda piece, claiming that the Voltron Force's recent "attack" on Galaxy Garrison caused further damage to Amalgamus. In an attempt to garner support from anyone who still doubts him, Zarkon betrays Haggar (again) and banishes her to the Dream Dimension. Zarkon proceeds to order I.G.O.R. to crush a planet's rebellion and force all of its inhabitants to work in mines, quipping, "Don't call them slaves, I.G.O.R. Call them volunteers. The chains are just... a minor detail." Queequeg and Lafitte, who are bored of just hanging around Galaxy Garrison, doing nothing but menial tasks for Lotor and Zarkon, steal Amalgamus, and decide to sell him on the Black Market. The Voltron Force takes back and repairs Amalgamus. Amalgamus clears the names of the Voltron Force, and reveals Zarkon's treachery to the entire Galaxy Alliance. Zarkon, tired of playing benevolent, admits to everything, and declares that he will destroy anyone and anything that supports the Voltron Force. Zarkon deploys the entire Fleet of Doom, as well as the entirety of the Galaxy Alliance's armada, against Arus. The Voltron Force, with the help of Coran and Amalgamus, takes out both armies, ousts Zarkon, and retakes the Galaxy Garrison. Zarkon and Lotor retreat to Castle Doom, and pathetically bicker with each other, completely alone now that Haggar is banished, I.G.O.R. is destroyed, and Queequeg and Lafitte were implicitly imprisoned or killed by Zarkon.

Heinousness: Prince Lotor and Haggar were The Heavies, but nearly all of their actions were facilitated by Zarkon, and unlike him, they were given some sympathetic qualities, with Allura herself at one point referring to Lotor as a pitiful and tortured soul. I.G.O.R. was simply following his programming, and Queequeg and Lafitte were just petty hired thugs. The only villains unaffiliated with the Doom Empire were Black Draco (a dragon who was little more than an animal, albeit one capable of speech) and Kolak the Hunter, whose villainy consisted of enslaving the aforementioned Black Draco and a few other dragons, and trying to either kill the Voltron Force, or subject them to Unwilling Roboticization.

There's destroying Lance's village and everyone in it, assassinating King Alfor with the help of Haggar, who he then betrayed, leaving billions to die by sabotaging the Galaxy Alliance's attempt to stop Nova-99 from going supernova, trying to start a war by sabotaging a peace signing, threatening billions as part of a ploy designed to eliminate Voltron and allow him to take complete control of the Galaxy Alliance, endangering the entire universe to acquire a new power source and refusing to stop even with Haggar begging him to for the sake of everything, and then betraying Haggar again simply to make himself look good while admitting that he had always planned on getting rid of her anyway.

Mitigating Factors: He constantly disparaged his son, and it's made clear that he only regarded him as a pawn, which caused Lotor to resent him while at the same time secretly craving his approval and praise. The main reason why Lotor disliked I.G.O.R. is because he saw him as his father's "other son" (Zarkon notably never said anything to dispel this notion).

[tup] King Zarkon

Also, After reading Getter Robo G (damn, finding it was hard). I say...Cut Lando.

Yeah, this sounds stupid (from my part, I'm the stupid one) but Brai overheinous him. I only knew Brai from the finale of the OG Getter Robo and the Firsr half of Shin Getter, but after reading G (which was shorter than the other mangas)...

Well, Brai is far more destructive and sadistic, plus, unlike what I believed.

Brai is one member of the Big Bad Ensemble of The OG manga, Big Bad of G and a mayor antagonist of Shin Getter Robo, actually a prequel manga for Getter Robo Go detailing the origin of the Shin Getter. So he has a large rapsheet.

I would like to EP him right now. But I still want to read Getter Robo Arc to finish the "official" Getter Robo Saga.

So, uh, everyone can wait a while?

To give a idea of how Bad Brai can be? He does the same as taking the entire Japan as hostages but far worse, he tries to use bioweapons and causes more than one massacre. Lando is awful, but sans Japanese cities, most of his victims were soldiers. Brai has crimes back to the OG Getter Robo, so...yeah, he obviously got a longer rapsheet.

The reason why I'm waiting is because I want to finish Arc to get more info about the Getter Rays and the Andromeda Country, both things that are very relevant to Brai's backstory.
