Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Before I vote on Havik (and I will), is it relevant that he's a Chaosrealmer? They seem to be Always Chaotic Evil; Havik may just be smarter than the others.

Chaosrealm is an anarchic realm with no government or rules and so their people live by their own rules and ideals. However Chaos is also a religion and they have temples and monks, so they do actually have a structured system.

Chaosrealmers are characterized as scatterbrained, ditzy and unpredictable. Their speech can be backwards, slurred or random and erratic. However despite living in a realm of chaos and anarky, none of the Chaosrealmers are truly evil. Konquest mode in Deception shows most of them are just mentally deranged or weirdo anarchists who don't believe in rules though also follow a religion.

Old Timeline Havik also appears to be less evil and more a neutral character who doesn't fight for good or evil. But this version of him however is a fully Chaotic Evil being and takes his chaos worshiping too far.

This is an odd one but I'm going to try to do this.

What is the Work?

http://debrief.commanderbond.net/topic/64591-skyfall-1969/index.html https://quarterdeck.commanderbond.net/t/spectre-1971-lazenby-trilogy-part-3/746

Basically on the commander bond forums one guy had the idea to reinterpret Skyfall and Spectre as George Lazenby movies (he even did the research to cast actors from 1970 and 71 in order to create authenticity), with the Spectre adaptation being combined with elements of Diamonds Are Forever to try and make a good swan song for Bond to go out on. Barring a few changes to the plot to make it more in line with the 60s movies Skyfall 1969 is pretty faithful (though Bond does NOT sleep with Severine since even HE realizes it's sleazy to sleep with a sexual abuse victim). Now, our candidate doesn't appear until the Spectre adaptation but his shadow is felt in the Skyfall one.

Who Is He?

Ernest Stravo Blofeld, the leader of SPECTRE and James Bond's nemesis. Notably these two are assumed to be a.) sequels to On Her Majesty's Secret Service and b.) in the same continuity as all the OTHER bond movies from the 60s (The events of Thunderball are mentioned).

What Has He Done?

Now Blofeld doesn't appear in Skyfall 69 but he does give Silva men to carry out the assault on Skyfall manor. However, he takes center stage in Spectre 1971. He appears in the pre credit scene when Bond tries to kill him first by kidnapping him then shooting him in the knee and hurling him off the Golden Gate Bridge. Turns out Blofeld survives (and even regains his ability to walk due to robotic prosthetics), and using his the alias Doctor Shatterhand continues to lead Spectre (where he displays his Bad Boss tendencies by allowing the Serrafimo brothers to brutally kill the existing Number 4 and take both his place and that of the recently deceased Number 3 despite Number 4 having served Spectre both loyally and efficiently.

THEN we find out his endgame, which by his own admission was what he has been building towards all along. Spectre creates a virus from various rare and poisonous plants that attacks the circulatory system so that the heart will shut down (we see the virus's demonstrated on the film's version of Madeline. It's.....a pretty horrible way to go out; Bond himself almost dies before Tiffany Case, a SPECTRE agent who nevertheless realizes that the plan is bad even by her jaded standards saves his life) The endgame is to lace diamonds mined in South Africa with the virus (The virus works by infecting someone, with the infected then acting as a carrier) before distributing them all over the world, unleashing a global pandemic that will tear society apart and create an opening for Spectre to take control (and for an added bonus since Blofeld is also a former Nazi in this continuity it will be a "fourth reich".)

He and Bond have the typical villain exchange over dinner before Blofeld decides to, just like in the original Spectre, torture James Bond with power drills to the brain. He mockingly allows Tiffany to say goodbye and like in the original movie Bond not only remembers her but is able to get her to slip his exploding watch which she hurls at Blofeld and Irma Bunt (yeah she replaces Winx in this version). They flee, and the cavalry arrives in the form of Felix Leitner and the US Marines (who found him due to Q pinging onto Bond's tracking device). As the marines destroy the diamonds laced with the virus Bond and Tiffany go after Blofeld, who along with Bunt get the drop on them. As Irma takes Tiffany hostage Blofeld prepares to shoot bond, only for Bond to grab the machete on the basement floor and use it to knock the gun out of his hand.

Blofeld flees into the Garden where all the poisons are manufactured and we get a pretty cool fight sequence where Bond and Blofeld duel with machetes and try to dodge the dangerous animals. Blofeld manages to sneak up on Bond and overpower him before sadistically pressing down on Bond's chest with his robotic leg. Fortunately it's at that moment that the charges the marines planted go off, giving Bond the opening to hit Blofeld with a rock. Bond than grabs both the Nightshade berries and the Machete and as Blofeld charges Bond blocks his strike and jams the berries down Blofeld's throat. As Blofeld struggles Bond grabs him by the throat and begins to squeeze. The combination of the berries and strangling ultimately kills Blofeld. Shortly afterwards Bond successfully saves Tiffany and kills Irma Bunt for good, ending Blofeld's madness once and for all.

Heinous Standard?

Now this fic is assumed to be a replacement for Diamonds are forever in the Bond canon and directly reference the events of On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Thunderball, so it shares a heinous standard with those movies. The fic version of Silva also gets up to some pretty nasty shit and even Bond coldly lets Severine die rather than give up M to Silva but all things said Blofeld more than meets the standard. We see the effect of the virus and it is a HORRIBLE way to go (so horrible in fact that Tiffany Case, a Spectre agent who while not as openly twisted as her fellows has a misanthropic view of the world, immediately does a Heel–Face Turn upon seeing the Virus in action.) More importantly his plan is to unleash the virus on a global scale, unleashing a pandemic that will plunge the world into chaos....all so that Spectre can raise as the new Fourth Reich.

On a lesser note he also demonstrates some Politically Incorrect Villain tendencies with this little gem.

BLOFELD You're right, life adapts. But isn't it strange how we are all put on God's earth and yet there are some of us here who are just better?

BOND Better?

BLOFELD Desirable and undesirable.

BOND Ubermensch and untermensch.

BLOFELD Exactly.

Mitigating Factors?

There is ONE possible moment. When Tiffany calls his plan monstrous we get this little exchange TIFFANY You're a monster.

BLOFELD No Miss Case, you are the monsters. (to Bond) You remember Dresden?

BOND Carpet bombing leveled the city at the end of the war, nearly 45,000 casualties.

BLOFELD All for nothing. The war was already won.

BOND Not our finest hour. But you know it'll never work. Chaos just breeds more chaos. They'll never accept you.

Now considering that Blofeld's plan will kill MILLIONS of innocent people and what he does to Bond this comes across as extreme Moral Myopia at best, and we learn that while Blofeld does hold Nazi ideals he defected to the Allies when it became obvious that Germany was going to lose. So I'm not sure it's a standard or if it's just extreme hypocrisy. It's still an issue though.

Does he count?

If it weren't for the Dresden exchange absolutely. With it though I'm not certain. I'll leave it up to you to decide

OK. EP based on adaptation of one of the most historically inaccurate works out there, that still has fans online, who try to claim otherwise

What's the work?

300: March to Glory is a PSP exclusive action game, based on 300 movie, which in turn based on 300 comic book mini-series from 1998, which was written by now infamous Frank Miller. A fictionalized retelling of Battle of Thermopylae (with so many historical inaccuracies and unrealistic elements, it can be called flat out fantasy. And this is despite Zack Snyder claiming, before the movie was released, that it is totally accurate depiction of the ancient battle), the plot follows the titular 300 Spartans, who are led by King Leonidas in defending Sparta against the invading forces of Persia (who are depicted cartoonishly evil in 300 and its adaptations). The game greatly expands the plot of the movie by adding several new areas and territory for Spartans to battle on and includes exclusive Persian villains (Xerxes' generals) and Spartans raiding Persian camp.

My candidate from this game is the "God-King" of Persia - Xerxes, who, while, in sequels to both comic (Xerxes: The Fall of the House of Darius and the Rise of Alexander) and the movie (300: Rise of an Empire) get a redeeming quality (loved his father), this is not accurate to his version in this game (which didn't have any sequels to give Xerxes such redeeming quality).

Who is Xerxes?

A self-proclaimed "God-King" of all Persia and the territories they conquer, Xerxes seeks to expand his empire upon the rest of the world by conquering it. Sending his messenger to demand surrender from Spartans, Xerxes immediately move his massive army (most of which consisted of slaves, who are forced to fight, hell some slaves are forced to carry bombs and blow themselves up in hopes to take Spartans with them) to Sparta in his attempt to conquer it and murder Spartan warriors for their defiance and burn Sparta as an example to the whole Greece, after Spartans murdered his messenger. As 300 Spartans and King Leonidas form their defense on the Hot Gates and use them to repel Persian armies, Xerxes grows angrier, ordering one of his top generals, Hydarnes, leader of the Immortals (deadliest assassins of Persia), to slaughter (watch the intro) the entire population of the Greek village (children included, with one being left to live long enough to tell everything to Spartans as a message from Persians) and the rest of his forces are desecrating the Temples of the Greeks Gods (with one Temple having a big pile of dead corpses of Greeks). As his forces continue to fail against Spartans, Xerxes started executing his officers for failing him and only manages to get an upper hand, when Ephialtes (a deformed Greek) showed them a path to a secret path around Hot Gates, which would enable them encircling the Spartans. Leonidas decided to strike out the Persian camp in the night before Persians would attack them using this secret path, in hopes of killing Xerxes' top two generals, Hydarnes and Mardonius, to weaken Persian army. In the camp they observe a LOT of dead bodies and people, who are tortured to death, kill many Persians, a defenseless Xerxes' harem (a WTF moment for me) and Hydarnes (being unable to find Mardonius). Escaping from the camp, Spartans make their final stand, defending Hot Gates, until Persians overwhelm them and kill them all, except Dilios, whom Leonidas send back to Sparta to amass Greek army and free Greece one day. Xerxes then left the Greece under the rule of Mardonius and he ruled, until Dilios attack his castle with his Greek army and murdered him, freeing Greece.

Heinousness?

Okay, King Leonidas is a ruthless asshole (who isn't acknowledged as such by the narrative) with his murder of defensless harem of Xerxes, just to anger him and him brutally slaughtering Xerxes' slaves, which he sends against Sparta, but first, Persians attacked him and gloat about burning Sparta down and killing and raping everyone in it, leading him to act like this to protect Sparta, second, he doesn't reach nearly the same intended and actual bodycount, that Xerxes does and he doesn't even plan on harming children, whos deaths Xerxes doesn't give a crap about. Overall, Xerxes orders deaths of hundreds, if not thousands, has his Persians desecrating Greek temples (killing all the priests inside, burn villages and desires to do continue his bloody conquest upon the rest of the world. I think he passes.

Mitigating Qualities?

None.

Conclusion?

I will say Yes.

I'm doing Havik's writeup now because I won't get a chance tomorrow. So sorry if I rushed this process. Havik is also unopposed in terms of votes.

  • Mortal Kombat X (Comic Series): Havik is a anarchic cleric from the Chaosrealm who was hired by Quan Chi to retrieve Shinnok's Amulet in exchange for Blood Magik. But Havik plans to betray the sorcerer when he obtains the amulet for his own twisted goals and manipulates the Outworld general Reiko by fabricating a prophecy that preys on his ego and ambitions, in which Havik convinces Reiko to join forces with him to use the Kamidogu and the Blood Code to make Reiko a god, which in actual fact will use him as vessel to release the amulet. to obtain the Kamidogu, Havik uses the Blood Code to corrupt and possess others, including Raiden, Shujinko and Sub-Zero. Havik also possesses Forrest Fox and has him slaughter the Shirai Ryu excluding Takeda and poison Hanzo Hasashi AKA Scorpion, forcing him to relive his clan's massacre and family's murder, to release his Revenant persona and try and enslave him. Havik has the captured Jacqui Briggs beaten to a pulp to try and bring out Cassie Cage's ancestral powers, then kills Hanzo to try and bring out Scorpion one last time. Using the blood of several champions and the Kamidogu, Havik transforms Reiko into a "Blood God", to which the cleric kills Reiko and retrieve Shinnok's Amulet which he uses to destroy a Shokan ship, killing hundreds of them aboard it. Havik, after being attacked by Takeda, tortures the young boy while promising that Earthrealm's people will die slowly and painfully. Wanting to destroy Order throughout the realms, Havik would create a universe drowned in chaos and madness, consumed by nothing but endless suffering and death.

A second candidate from 300: March to Glory. The vilest of Xerxes' generals

Who is Hydarnes?

One of Xerxes' top two generals and his chief tactician, who is also a leader of the Immortals (the deadliest of Persian assassins), Hydarnes is the most sadistic and active among Persians commanders. Attacking nearby Greek village, Hydarnes pillages and burns it, slaughtering all Greek civilians in his way, leaving only one dying child as a survivor, to send Spartans a message. Leaving a lot of dead bodies behind, Hydarnes attached a large chunk of the survivors to a giant tree, which horrified the Spartans. Later on Hydarnes has his Immortals helping out the rest of Persian army pillaging their way across Greece, killing many Greek civilians along the way. As King Leonidas attacks big Persian camp, before his final battle at Hot Gates, he specifically hunts down Hydarnes and Mardonius, but only managed to find Hydarnes, who has a large number of dead people, who were tortured and executed by the looks of it, nearby his own palace. Hydarnes battles Leonidas, but loses and Leonidas decapitated him and left his head on a spear as a message to Persians.

Heinousness?

Burned and pillaged a big village and murdered more people, than any other Persian general, while also attaching dead Greek civilians to a giant tree. Has a large number of tortured people nearby his palace in Persian camp and by the looks of it he has the largest number of dead prisoners (as the rest of Persian commanders only has a few), who are brutally executed.

Mitigating Qualities?

The only one is his lack of personality, as he has only four lines of dialogues in the game. Here they are . But I think they managed to establish enough personality to go around, as a very sadistic bastard, who is full of himself.

Conclusion?

I will say Yes.
