Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Yes to Bara.

You know you're a veteran when you stop feeling anything from the effort posts and just manually tick off all the boxes in your head for qualification.

Oh he's a Fate Worse than Death pedophile? Sure, yes, whatever. Next!

So the discussion time is up for two of my three FAITH candidates but before I post the write ups I'd like to ask if anyone else wants to vote on Miriam Bell since her time doesn't run out till tomorrow and she got less votes than the others.

Lemme just encourage people who might still be skeptical on Miriam: while the story of the second game may be a cocktail of All Just a Dream ambiguity (albeit one whose events still seemed to have happened in-universe, like the EP posits) the Second Death rituals are established in the third game, which is very much in reality.

This puts Miriam Bell behind possibly the most horrifying atrocity in the entire series—i.e. "let's chuck dozens and dozens of babies into Hell until one of them turns into a demon"—and also makes her (if somewhat indirectly) the one behind Gary. I can understand hesitance concerning the second game's events, but I think even discounting those she's still bad enough.

I never really considered her in comparison to Gary on my first playthrough, but I think the EP makes a damn cogent case for her qualification even next to him. If anything I think the EP misses a few details that help push her along (i.e. that the Second Death ritual doesn't just involve infant sacrifice but cutting the face off of a second victim and then transforming them into a living hell-portal into which she tosses the babies).

    What is the work?
Skylanders Academy: New Horizon is a fan-made Fan Sequel to Skylanders Academy, serving as Season 4 while incorporating more aspects of its basis. When Master Eon and Spyro prepare to depart to find out more about the fate of the dragons, they are suddenly attacked by a gang of dragons called the Knights of Solitude that are determined to drag Spyro with them, but things get complicated when they meet a dragon similar to Spyro named Cyrus leading the Knights, and Cynder is yet another target for them, as they need dragons of all eight elements, with only Magic (Spyro) and Undead (Cynder) missing. All for a dangerous ritual to bring a horrible villain to Skylands.

Who is he? What has he done?

     Full Version
The topic of this EP is Omen, a strange... eldritch, puppet, thingy seemingly made of junk and string with smoke with eyes in a cage for a head.

He first shows up in chapter 6 of the story, but before then, we get a good idea how bad he is. First, the Knights of Solitude are revealed to be under a perfected version of the spell that Spyro underwent from Strykore, and has subsumed their personalities. When the Skylanders end up in his base of operations, Cyrus goes from snarky to whimpering, giving out a Rapid-Fire "No!" when he knows his boss will be upset at the Skylanders finding his base of operations. And we get that...alongside his childishness, where he starts by talking about a game he just finished, but when he learns that Cyrus failed to destroy the Skylanders, he is furious, with Cyrus tensing over the mark on his left eye. While Cyrus manages to explain how it could work in his favor, Omen accepts his explanation, but makes it clear that there will be consequences should he fail.

So, now onto his proper debut in the story. When the Skylanders, alongside a recruited Ninjini, decide to take the fight to them, Omen comes in, and proceeds to insult each one of them, until he lays eyes on Ninjini. He then erupts at Cyrus, furious that one of the Giants, some of the best Skylanders, have become part of his problems, leaving Cyrus a shaking, fearful, dragon, and Omen proceeds to punish him, making him writhe in agony, with Omen stating that a long talk will follow. What follows, is a brutal fight, ending with Ninjini getting fatally electrocuted. Yeah. Omen's proper debut has him killing Ninjini, one of the best Skylanders in this universe! When the fight is over, his Bad Boss tendencies continue, as he blames Cyrus for everything, and while he starts off seemingly honestly praising him for getting 6 dragons, it quickly gives way to him belittling him as a coward.

Omen then doesn't show up for a few chapters, but we see that he still has a firm hold on Cyrus, as he is terrified to fail at using Vathek as an alternative for Cynder. Omen than makes his appearance in Chapter 9, breaking out the Golden Queen for help on his "pet project", one involving her ability to objects to gold, but when she tries to reject his offer, he makes it clear that she has no choice in the matter by choking her, and stealing her powers to produce more gold. Omen's previous praise is then proven false, as he doesn't care about Cyrus at all, only wanting him for his uniquely powerful flames, and he's not proud of him at all until he gets all of them, uncaring of Cyrus being unable to sleep from the pain he suffers. Oh, and the mark on Cyrus's eye is explained: it's a torture brand, allowing Omen to freely make suffer agonizing pain anytime and anywhere. He also continues to explain that Omen found him at a young age, and when Cyrus asked about his family, he showed him a purple dragon's skull, and spun yarns about how the purple dragons were a vicious race and his unique flames were a curse to be ashamed of. As they learn more, it eventually comes to pass that Cyrus is Spyro's long-lost brother. Of course, Cyrus is furious at this revelation, angry at Spyro having a family while he suffered under Omen for years, resulting in him asking why he was never given a chance to be happy. Omen's treatment of him is then revealed to stem from a need to continue his control over Cyrus, as him being miserable makes him easier to control, especially since his power has the ability to destroy Omen permanently.

Afterwards, Cyrus is locked in Cloudcracker Prison, and Spyro decides to talk to him, trying to understand how it felt to be under Omen. The way Cyrus describes the torture band he placed on him is vile, and especially when he gets to explaining how Omen used it: take the pain of getting a shot (a vaccine shot, not a gunshot) and spread it across your whole body for minutes on end, doing it any time you spoke back, came back late, or did anything like a dragon (breathing fire or flying). Cyrus also describes having horrible nightmares under his control, waking up in the middle of the night three nights in row before his body just gave up and let him sleep. But, this is also the time Omen decides to cut the middleman and get to work himself, attacking Skylanders Academy directly and brutalizing the Skylanders before Cynder offers herself up, with Cyrus then forcing Spyro to come alone by threatening Cynder.

And now for the finale, when Cyrus spills Omen's plan. He emerged during the Great War from another world when good and evil were in flux, and the cage is nothing more than a portion of his power: using 8 dragons of each element, he plans to bring his entire body to Skylands, whereupon he'll become unstoppable. The situation is dire enough that Malefor performs an Enemy Mine, though Spyro is the first one to get involved in fighting Omen. Everyone else soon joins in, but when Stealth Elf joins in, Omen cruelly brings up the death of Ninjini to break her resolve. The fight ultimately ends with Omen being reduced to pathetically begging for his life before getting incinerated by Cyrus, the very dragon he abused all his life. Afterwards, the other Knights turn back to normal, revealing them to be the other six dragons from the first game: Drobot, Camo, Sunburn, Whirlwind, Bash, and Zap. Even after he's gone, though, the dragons are consumed with guilt for the crimes they committed under his control.

TL;DR: Omen took a young dragon under his wing through torture and abuse, captured 6 innocent dragons and warped them into his minions and future batteries, killed one of the most powerful heroes of the story, left a trail of destruction in his path, and a sadistic monster who took pleasure in the misery of others.

    Heinousness
He's quite a step above the other villains in the story. Most of the pre-established villains either have redeeming qualities (Malefor proves that regardless of Cynder's alignment with his enemies, he still loves her and will do what it takes to protect her, with him even performing a Hazy-Feel Turn), suffer The Worf Effect (the Doom Raiders), or under another's control (the Knights of Solitude).

Omen, on the other hand? He has none of those. While he may definitely come off as Laughably Evil with his childish interests, he's nonetheless shown himself as ruthless and vile, and Cyrus, normally a very calm, determined, and snarky opponent, is reduced to whimpering and pleading whenever Omen is upset, and he's also the only villain to be a Hero Killer. That's not to mention all the abuse that Cyrus suffered under Omen, which is something that no other villain does.

    Mitigating factors?
This is one thing that does kind of worry me. His childishness is definitely prevalent and one thing that makes him fit quite well in the fair light-hearted setting, but I'm not sure if his childishness takes away from his heinousness. His actions are all the same, and when angered, he does not shy away from being quite vindictive and giving breaking speeches. It's also mostly limited to his first few appearances: the rest of the time, he's a Manipulative Bastard, a Bad Boss, and a serious threat. I think some others might want a look and give their opinion.

In terms of resources, his only ones are Cyrus and his collection of hands, each having different properties. Otherwise, he has to gather resources on his own, hence why he kidnapped the Golden Queen, as he needed her ability to produce gold.

Verdict?

I say [tup] because of the whole "torture a child into a mentally broken slave" and the Hero Killer business, but I'll leave that to you guys.

Omen sounds like a yes

I feel like I should clarify something here. Miriam gave the 2nd death to herself, not to another person. The note that explains what happened is here in the Chapter 3 folder under "Timeline of Miriam." However one thing that I didn't emphasize as much as I should have in the EP? Miriam was sacrificing infants non stop for five days straight before Gary appeared. I'm formally voting yes to her now having thought it over more.

Okay, so I thought I only had one more for Ward, but... maybe not? These two might make it as well, but I honestly don't know. Thankfully it's a short effortpost, even if that's kind of the problem.

Who are Orchard?

A duo of bio-manipulators, Orchard is probably one of the most disturbing supervillain teams in the setting. Self-admitted slave peddlers, the two specialize in creating "custom orders," brainwashing their victims into believing they fit a certain physical description and then mutating their bodies to match. This can be anything from making a set of triplets, to turning someone into a monster to satisfy a buyer's sexual fetish, to even "shipping in prisoners from overseas and turning them into half-cow people to sell to fans of some asinine children's show."

If everything else hadn't thrust me into a bad place, the pictures here would have. Before and after pictures. Abducted people, then what Bonesaw would have called art. A young man made to have the heads and legs of a dog, only the trunk of the body normal. Three women, apparently abductees from overseas, made to look identical, the 'after' picture showing them sitting in a row, smiling the same smile. A Mr. Sheppard had paid for a Mrs. Sheppard, wife, to be changed into an old woman, paying forty thousand dollars for the procedure, and another fifty thousand for the mental changes to go with it. There was a picture of Legend, same features, hair, build, and costume. An exact likeness bought and paid a dizzying price for by villains trying some obscure scheme. It hadn't worked.

Already veterans of numerous cape conflicts, notably the massive gang war called "The Boston Games," the duo survive Jack Slash's apocalypse and continue with their practices as humanity tries to rebuild in the ashes of civilization, but they're fortunately hunted down and captured. One of them is recruited by Victoria to provide a working body for a friend who was mutated by Cauldron (more on them below) in exchange for certain amenities while in prison—with a mind reader brought in to monitor the process and make sure he doesn't pull anything, of course.

Unfortunately for that half of the pair, another apocalypse pops up and his powers overwhelm him, mutating him into a monstrous kaiju following some alien programming to end the world. He's not really in control when that happens so I wouldn't consider that part of his rapsheet, but when the kaiju crumble to dust... well, no one should feel particularly sad over his fate.

Are they heinous enough?

One of the main antagonistic factions of Worm was Cauldron, a secret conspiracy of human traffickers who kidnapped people from throughout the multiverse by the thousands, transformed them into monsters, then dropped them on earth without their memories. They were powerful, with their hands in the government, loyal members inserted as leaders of national superhero teams, and one of their own leaders had the power to win. I'm not trying to be funny, her power is literally the ability to know how to win in any situation. They were overpowered as all hell.

Orchard? Just two assholes who get up to even worse, even if they may not have as many victims. Cauldron didn't use their subjects for sex trafficking, and even they weren't so horrible that they'd stoop to such petty crimes as turning someone into a half-cow to sell off as a pet-slave. The series places a lot of emphasis on the trauma of Body Horror, how having one's body twisted into something inhuman and unrecognizable fucks you up mentally, leaving you defiled and utterly isolated from "normal" people. Orchard combines that with sex trafficking and slavery, none of which are crimes exclusive to them (as I've gone over with Mama Mathers and the Fallen). But a combination of these crimes? That overlap of sex slavery and Body Horror is a niche they have a monopoly on.

Mitigating factors?

Library mentioned this earlier, but as horrible as they are, Orchard are mostly background players. For the arc set during the Boston Games, they're mentioned occasionally but never show up. We get a few sparse mentions of what they're up to throughout the rest of the story, and they have a few tangible impacts on the plot—one (admittedly skeevy) hero is fired from his team because he associates with the pair's "clientele," and Victoria has one of them spend a few chapters healing her friend—but the only two chapters they physically appear in (ignoring when one becomes a kaiju) is when they've already been beaten and arrested.

That said? Holy shit, are they horrible, and I think—think—the sheer disgust they provoke in everyone overcomes the lack of presence. Orchard are universally derided as some of the most inhuman monsters in the setting, with nobody liking or trusting them. As I said earlier, Body Horror is a major theme in Ward, so the details of what they do from the pictures above or exposition are played for all the horror imaginable, driving in their cruelty enough to maybe prevent them from falling into Offscreen Villainy.

Verdict?

Genuinely unsure, but they were easy enough to cover that I didn't see the harm in at least throwing them out there. Whatever the case, I'll be finishing up Worm/Ward with one last asshole soon.

I hope this goes better for me than my last candidate, but here goes another (hopefully better) candidate before I get to Cursa from Mario + Rabbids (Master N said I was allowed to cover it):

  • What is the work?

Mega Man X4 is the fourth installment in the Mega Man X series and was released on the PS 1.

  • Who is Double? What has he done?

Double is the secret double agent working for Sigma to spy on X while gleefully aiding in Sigma’s plans for world destruction using the Final Weapon. After spending most of his time pretending to be a bumbling fat goofball Reploid, once Sigma orders Double to terminate the Maverick Hunters at base, Double shows his true colors by gleefully slaughtering and killing all the Hunters at base and afterwards goes after X to kill him too.

Once X confronts Double, Double reveals his true nature to him and his plans for allowing the Final Weapon to destroy the Earth. After attempting to kill X, Double calls X pathetic for believing that he was truly his friend right before dying.

  • Mitigating factors? Freudian Excuse?

Nope. Zilch. Nada. Double is a pure evil son of a bitch from head to toe. Him being a fun clumsy goofball ally to X was all purely an act to further his and Sigma’s plans.

  • Heinous Standard

Now THIS is where things get sorta tricky with Double as the heinous standard for the Mega Man X series is pretty damn high, however I think Double does enough with the limited screen time that he has and gleefully helping Sigma attempt to destroy the world.

  • Final Verdict

Hopefully, I found a better second candidate. I personally say yes to him, but it’s up to you all to decide.

I dunno, there are plenty of other minions of Sigma who also kill a lot of people. He doesn’t really stand out to me.

One of these days, all of you will accept me as your supreme overlord.

[up] Yeah, but tbf a lot of those other minions of Sigma are shown to kill completely offscreen meanwhile all of Double’s kills are completely shown onscreen so I feel like that makes him stand out a bit from the rest of the crowd.

My immediate issue with Double would be Magma Dragoon, who is far worse in terms of the whole "nasty Maverick" with his massacre of the Sky Lagoon, redeeming qualities or otherwise that is far worse than what Double has an I don't really see anything to stand out from that.

Alright, here's my initial write up for Pardis.

  • Pardis III is the king of Erdoras who, while initially seeming like simply a stern and aloof ruler, quickly proves to be one of the most blackhearted warmongers on Orsterra. Believing himself the only one "worthy" of ruling the continent, he lures the Ringbearer Chosen to his kingdom before personally murdering Mehraz, his own general and a beloved hero of his people (who he smugly admits he always hated due to being more popular than him), and frames the Chosen One for the crime, stealing the God Rings they had acquired from Herminia, Tytos and Auguste while they are imprisoned. With the power of the Rings, Pardis launches a massive invasion on the rest of Orsterra, leaving countless dead in his wake. When Elrica, his own daughter, stands up to him and tries to stop his campaign, Pardis brutally beats her before beheading her in front of both the Chosen One and his younger daughter Alaune, purely in an attempt to break the Chosen One's spirit so that Aelfric's Ring would become corrupted. While all the other villainous Ringbearers are some degree of Tragic Villain or otherwise have lines they will not cross, Pardis stands out for being more than willing to kill and destroy anything that stands between him and becoming the Master of All.
