Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Hi folks, long time no see. A lot seems to have changed since my absence, and I don't plan on returning full-time, but since I am currently in a lot of hype for Star Wars: The Old Republic again, I thought I'd just come back from retirement briefly to propose a potential candidate.

What's the work?

I don't think Star Wars in general warrants much introduction, though SWTOR is a special case, since it is the only Star Wars Legends material that is still being provided with new content. The character I'm proposing comes from the Knights of the Eternal Throne expansion specifically, which was released in 2016. Long story short, both the Republic and the Sith Empire fell victim to the forces of Zakuul, a hidden Empire crafted by the former Sith Emperor Tenebrae/Vitiate himself, who now goes by the name of Valkorion, since his old Empire failed his expectations. Even though Valkorion seemingly dies at the very beginning, his spirit keeps haunting the mind of the Outlander, who first has to deal with Valkorion's son Arcann becoming the new Eternal Emperor, and afterwards faces his much more powerful and much more insane sister Vaylin, who is the Big Bad for the expansion. With that said, let's skip to the candidate.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

The candidate is Jarak, a Mad Scientist of Anomid descent. His backstory mentions that he stood out from his kind and his colleagues (who were disgusted by him) because he entirely fixated his studies on the brain of all intelligent species. More specifically, he developed an extremely cruel method to brainwash people, which had a mortality rate of 9 out of 10, but he nevertheless made a fortune with it, because crime bosses, slave masters and other scum from throughout the universe were very interested in his research. Eventually, he caught the attention of the Eternal Emperor Valkorion himself, who was searching for a method to shackle and control his own daughter Vaylin, as he was afraid of her enormous power. Promised unlimited ressources and test subjects to perfect his research, the only condition being that Vaylin was to be kept alive at all costs, Jarak happily accepted the offer. For most of her childhood, Vaylin was then subjected to the worst kind of horrors imagineable, having unwilling test subjects be torn to shreds by his hand-made beasts in front of her, showing her the gory details of vivisections and punishing her harshly for every slight act of defiance via isolation, pain and fear. Thanks to him Vaylin goes from a frightened, innocent child to an Ax-Crazy mass murderer who hast lost every last shred of her humanity. He also put a Trigger Phrase into her mind ("Kneel before the Dragon of Zakuul") which helps him and Valkorion control her, rendering her absolutely helpless to any of their misdeeds. Years later, he gets tasked by Vaylin (now Empress herself) to undo her condition, which he once again does in the most agonizing way possible, trying to jump ship when she seemingly loses control over her vast powers and piggybacking on the Outlander to get to safety. However, he tragically loses his life to one of the creatures inside of Valkorion's secret vault.

Even after his death, we learn more of his depravities, as the Outlander (if they are a Jedi Consular) is reunited with their former companion Felix Iresso, who got captured by Zakuul's forces trying to look for his former friend (or lover), only to fall into Jarak's trap. The scientist was very interested in the Sith holocron the Lieutenant has locked in his skull. For a whole of five years, Felix was subjected to brutal torture and experiments for the purpose of extracting it. When we see him again, he is a broken man.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

No Freudian Excuse and no redeeming qualities either. His motivation is clearly just For Science!. When meeting the Outlander, he tries to justify himself by saying that he is just a "humble servant of the Eternal Throne who merely does what he is told". The Outlander isn't buying it, and given that he was already conducting these types of experiments before being recruited by Valkorion, it doesn't hold any water. He also claims that "the pursuit of scientific knowledge is not evil" saying that sometimes there are just a few "unforseen consequences". When Vaylin is about to bring down his facility, he also offers to guide the Outlander to safety, but it is clear that he just wants to save his own hide. Same can be said about him agreeing to remove Vaylin's condition. He never shows any kind of regard to human (or alien) life whatsoever. In his journals which the Outlander can find, he speaks about the countless test subjects he is provided with (and the experiments he runs on them) with utmost apathy, only being glad that he is given enough material to develop his research. In one log, when he speaks about Vaylin killing a guard, he is not angry over the loss of life, but over Vaylin daring to defy him. When speaking about how he is stripping away Vaylin's humanity bit by bit, culminating in her laughing madly, which he describes as "glorious", he is clearly taking pride about finally managing to break her.

Heinous standart

I think we are safe here. Jarak is neither a Sith Lord, nor a major crime boss, but he does his utmost to be as despicable and cruel as he can, both with initially limited, as well as vast ressources. He doesn't have much screentime, but he makes to most of it, and his role in the story is important enough. If not for him, Vaylin wouldn't have become the monster that she is (sadly, the Outlander cannot redeem her and is forced to strike her down).

Final verdict

Jarak is probably one of the candidates that would've had difficulties to make it under our former rules, as a lot of what he does is told via backstory, logs and the consequences of his actions, rather than seeing his experiments on-screen. But with the updated rules, I think he safely makes it.

Yes to Jarak.

  • "Jersey Breakdown": Robert "Bobby" Masconi, the Hudson County Prosecutor, is a corrupt New Jersey legal official and the clandestine business partner of nightclub entrepreneur and racketeer Perry Cannavaro. In addition to facilitating the trafficking and prostitution of underage girls using Perry's clubs, Masconi abuses his position as a prosecutor to have 90% of juvenile offenders who come through the chambers of Judge Daniel Dolan—who Masconi had extorted by having the latter photographed being serviced by an underage prostitute—sent to the routinely abusive and inhumane Knollwood Juvenile Facility. In turn, Masconi receives money for every offender Dolan sends to the institution, laundering the money through a bogus publicity firm, and using the money for real-estate purchases. Having sexually assaulted Claire Wilson, a teenage server working at one of Perry's clubs, Masconi has Claire sent to Knollwood on fraud charges—behind Perry's back—to silence her when he realizes Detective Olivia Benson and her squad are investigating the matter.

What's the work?

Shadow of the Batgirl is a DC graphic novel retelling the origin of the best Batgirl, Cassandra Cain. As usual, while Cass may be the best, her father is the worst.

Who is David Cain?

An "assassin kingpin" out to corner the entire assassin market in the criminal underworld—I don't know how that works either, but whatever—Cain has also trained his daughter to be the perfect killer. To this end, he refused to teach her to read or even talk, instead training her to understand body language to superhuman levels.

His daughter would be sent on countless assignments to brutally murder targets, with an entire montage of prior kills shown. However, on one of these jobs, Cass wasn't able to finish off her mark quickly enough, and as he lay dying, pleading with her to give a final message to his daughter, Cass read every bit of agony and despair in his body language. This, naturally, freaks her out bad, and she runs away.

Most of the novel is spent with Cass making friends, learning to read/talk, and just generally accept herself. As this all happens, however, Cain is depicted enacting a massive crime spree in Gotham as he searches for his lost weapon. The novel ends with the two confronting each other, and although Cass easily beats up him and his entire gang, Cain is all too happy to submit his own life to her. She will carry on his legacy and take over his organization, fulfill the role he made her for.

Cass, being awesome, instead just decks him in the face and sends him to jail, taking on the mantle of Batgirl to protect the innocent and never again take a life.

Mitigating factors?

Nah, 100% total asshole and worst in the comic. Even his acceptance of defeat is just his warped ego, seeing Cass killing him as the final perfection of the weapon he made.

Verdict?

Glad to have an official version of him up. Next up I'll have an oc from another Batgirl graphic novel, an updated Brainiac from Krypton later this week, and versions of the Riddler and Ivy for MB.

  • Exact number never stated, but flashbacks show at least 11 that he's forced Cass kill, and she implies the number's higher. There's no Shared Universe with any other works as far as I can tell, so he doesn't have anyone to compete with, and even if he did the extra flavor of him abusing his daughter to do his killings for him I think would help him stand out.
  • Not 100% sure, but I think they depict him as legitimately proud of her rather than just viewing her as an extension of his ego one too many times for it to be waved off as depending on the writer. [nja] Or [up]

Yes to Jarak and to the adaptation David Cain.

Okay, so David Cain in the actual canon is a horribly abusive parent and rapist, but he's far from a CM. It's made clear in his own bizarre way, he loves Cassandra and is proud of her no matter what path she chooses. He honors his vow to Shiva not to tell their daughter of her parentage and when a man hires him to kill Cass, he furiously kills the other guy instead to protect her.

Welcome to comics. Dumb writing decisions abound.

Still, thanks for the clarification. My only real experience with canon Cain is a Linkara retrospective I only vaguely remember, so specifics are helpful.

It's an original graphic novel, basically its own thing for YA audiences. Canon drift is to be expected.

Cain is a very warped guy, but he's also very far from a CM. the rape I mentioned is when he killed Lady Shiva's sister to free her from attachments and have her become a powerful killer, while offering to spare Shiva if she had a child with him that he could raise as his own perfect killer. In spite of this, he has nothing but affection and respect for Shiva (who viewed having Cassie as a potential way to surpass and destroy her one day)
