Needs Help: Name Face Name

Note: This thread was proposed by Walk In Shadows, who gave others permission to make the thread.

Name-face Name attracts zero-context examples for some reason, both on and off-page. Possibly the name creates the impression that it is only referring to characters with the word "face" in their name, although it is actually when a character's name comes from a characteristic of their face. I performed a wick check. The results from a total of 39 examples in all of the wicks were:

  • Correct: 15/39 (38.46%) Refer to examples where the name refers to a characterstic of the character's face. I included examples where their face and their body were the same.
  • ZCE: 21/39 (53.84%) Include examples where only the name is stated. Possible misuse as well, but not enough context to tell.
  • Misuse/unclear: 3/39 (7.69%) Include examples where the characters name simply ends in "-face" or it is unclear what the name refers to.

I left out five wicks that were unclassifiable.

Possible solutions: Rename to something clearer.

It was suggested in the OP, but I believe the consensus shifted to Merging by around post #4 and onwards

[up] Oh right. Still, the crowner probably should have reflected that.

Actually, I counted the votes and we can just go ahead and merge with Meaningful Name now, so let's skip the crowner.

Double posting because I checked and the on-page examples are all ZCEs, so let's just scrap them all.

Double posting to archive the wick check:

Total: 39 examples (Not including the Other folder!!)

Correct: 15/39 38.46%

ZCE: 21/39 53.84%

Misuse/unclear: 3/39 7.69%

    open/close all folders
    Correct 15
  1. Spirited Away: No-Face, a featureless black spirit that literally has no face, only a mask to represent one.
  2. Dragon Quest XI - Other Characters: Was presumably named the "Doorknob-nosed Knobbler" because of his bulbous nose.
  3. His Favorite: "Doodle-face" because his face is covered in zits but it's more likely of how he's drawn due to the absence of such zits.
  4. Starlight Express: He's called Flat-Top because, as a personified brick truck, he wears bricks on his head and therefore literally has a flat top.
  5. Vinesauce Tomodachi Life Islanders Episodes 1 Through 26
    • As her name Two Faced implies, she has two faces.
    • Small Face is named after his most noticeable physical trait.
    • Both her full name (Ms. Ginormous Frontal Face) and her nickname Big Face reference her huge face.
  6. The Grossery Gang:
    • Pizza Face, named for the pun of the term of someone acne-riddled.
    • Named as “Trash Head” thanks to being a walking trash can.
    • In reference to being both a meatball sub, and being not too bright.
  7. The Boys: In addition, Herogasm reveals that one of the villains he fights is named Sexface, a riff on how many of Batman's enemies have a Name-face Name (e.g., Clayface, Two-Face, the Ventriloquist's dummy Scarface). Correct use in a sentence
  8. Batman Parody: Black Noir of the Seven has several clear parallels to Batman, particularly in that he is a dark vigilante who wears a black costume. Some Vought executives even try to teach him to fly a plane to accommodate Seven merchandise including a stand-in for the Batwing, plus the Herogasm miniseries establishes that one of the villains he fights is named Sexface (a riff on how several of Batman's enemies have a Name-face Name, like Two-Face and Clayface) this is correct usage in a sentence
  9. The Hills Run Red: Babyface, which comes from his mask made from a doll's face.
  10. Dude Bro Party Massacre 3: Motherface, who's called that because she's wearing the skin of her mother's face as a mask.
  11. Warrior Cats: A Dangerous Path: Brightpaw has her name changed to Lostface after she got mauled by the dogs, leaving her face terribly scarred.

    Zero-context 21
  1. Remnants: Typical example.
  2. Batman (1966): Rogues Gallery: His criminal alias is Two-"Face".
  3. Batman Central Rogues Gallery: Scarface
  4. Batman: Clayface:
    • Perhaps the only thing that is consistent with all versions.
    • Just like his predecessor and successors.
  5. Batman: Two-Face: One of the first.
  6. Earth Twenty Seven The Masterminds: One of the first and most recognizable.
  7. Earth Twenty Seven The Organized Crime Of Gotham:
    • Scarface
    • Scarface Yes, the same zce was on the page twice
  8. GL - Other Villains: “Gold Face”.
  9. Preacher: Arseface. Or as he would say it, "Uhfuh!"
  10. LEGO Batman Villains: "Two-Face". It not only reflects his disfigurement but also his Split Personality. I think this is partial-context.
  11. Metal Gear Solid V: Name-face Name Just the name of the trope
  12. Scream Ghost Face: Their shared nickname, Ghostface.
  13. Fury (MAX): Fuckface. He provides the page image.
  14. Xenoblade Chronicles 1: Black Face in the original, Metal Face in the dub.
  15. WordGirl: Captain HuggyFace.
  16. The Adventures of Pete & Pete: Name-face Name: Just the name of the trope.
  17. Dick Tracy: A common trope, notable examples are Pruneface, Littleface and Flyface.
  18. Disgusting McGrossface: The titular character is called Disgusting McGrossface.
  19. Tropes N to T: Brightpaw has her name changed to Lostface after she got mauled by the dogs. This is partial-context

    Misuse/unclear 3
  1. The Grossery Gang: Egghead, named for being a ditz. The character is an egg, but the example doesn't say that.
  2. Teen Girl Squad: What’s Her Face. This trope is also fairly common in the main Homestar Runner universe as well. Misused for "names ending in -face"'
  3. Outlander S 4 E 12 Providence: Roger is named Ehhaokonsah, Dogface, in Mohawk. Father Alexandre tells Roger it is an appropriate nickname, as the Mohawk are fond of dogs and do not keep their facial hair.

    Other 5 (not counted)
  1. Captain Colorbeard: In related tropes section.
  2. Naming Conventions: Index
  3. Batman: Pantheon page- pothole
  4. Naming Theme: Pantheon page- pothole
  5. Name Face Name: Laconic page
