Oh, right! It would probably be a good idea to update the Franchise Original Sin entry on the Square Peg, Round Trope page. Just putting this here because, IIRC, that page can't be edited by just anybody.

[up] It's not locked; you can edit it.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

I don't think so. We can always just resume cleanup-thread activity now.

Actually, there is something left to do here: updating the trope description.

[up][up] Easy enough to remove the one "good" from the opening.

I've actually seen Franchise Original Sin being attributed to creators (i.e. Toshiki Inoue's infamous miscommunication writing flaws), even moreso than Franchises. Does it deserve a rename or not?

Would that be covered by this?

It's not really a franchise.

Yeah, since it says "the flaws in this work were in originally by the same creator, but it was less pronounced over there due to several factors" rather than saying "the flaws in this work were in a preceding work in the franchise, but had several factors that allowed it to be less pronounced".

Should we tweak the description so we can close this sometime soon?

Probably, yeah. We just need a sandbox to play in.

May as well bring this example here while the thread's open.

emeriin deleted this from... I believe Franchise Original Sin?

  • One of the most base-breaking aspects of the post-2013 videos are the Mid-Review Sketch Show cutaway gags, with many feeling that they take too much time away from the reviews. However, sketches are nothing new to the series and have been featured since the early days, and some episodes from what's considered the "classic" era like Home Alone 3 featuring recurring segments that wouldn't feel too out of place in the modern videos. The difference is that sketches in the earlier reviews were used more sparingly and not in nearly every episode; they were also much shorter, lasting up to half a minute at most, and also only focused on Critic himself, while modern sketches are in most reviews, can take up to a few minutes, and focus on gags between new additions Malcolm and Rachel (later on, Tamara), which could often extend a review to over 40 minutes. With all this new focus on sketches, one could say that post-revival Critic is a Spiritual Successor to his now-scrapped show Demo Reel, which received a lot of backlash even from fans.

Their juxtaposition being "there were whole episodes dedicated to sketches, Ruxpin for example (others can deal with the rest, but I know this isn't true)"

I don't know if I fully agree, because even the older sketches in episodes were never as extensive production-wise as the modern-day ones, and there were fewer sketch-heavy episodes and the Teddy Ruxpin one was more of an outlier. With the new definition, they easily could have just rewritten this to cut the "The difference is..." bit, though I guess they didn't know about the retool yet. Should I re-add it without that bit?

[down] Oh good, we do have that!

Okay, let's get this ball rolling again. Here's Sandbox.Franchise Original Sin. Let's fix the description and then move the cleanup to the other thread.

Tweaked the first sentence. I think it's clear it the first installments have to do it better now?

[up]Wasn't that the requirement we voted to remove? Maybe rewrite it as "A flaw that audiences take issue about in the later installments of a series has actually been present since the earlier installments." (with or without the pothole) That should reduce any value judgement about the flaw being "better" executed in the earlier works.

Yeah it is. I meant to say I specifically tried to rewrite so it doesn't sound like it's needed.

I removed the paragraph about Franchise Original Sin's relation to Jumping the Shark, as the claim "you can jump the shark without having an original sin" directly invokes the old "it was better before" requirement.

I move that the following be removed:

  • The Loud House: A growing criticism of the series is episodes featuring more fantastical situations compared to Seasons 1-3. There were already instances of more unrealistic things happening in prior seasons, like the revelation that Lincoln was delivered by the First Lady in "Not a Loud", but these were forgiven for the most part because they were subtle, sporadic instances that rarely broke the Willing Suspension of Disbelief, and previous seasons at least had boundaries for the reality of The Loud House world. Season 4, however, had many take notice of these instances happening practically several episodes and becoming far more zany and explicitly outside the realm of realism (paranormal elements and Time Travel being the most egregious), with it becoming seemingly more ingrained into the show's formula in Season 5. This made people decry it as moving too far away from the show's original premise as a relatable, grounded series about a boy and his 10 sisters.

I personally don't think that this has seriously affected the show as a whole, plus it seems kinda complainy.

Looks like a holdover from the older usage of the item. I do feel like I've seen some complaints about the Denser and Wackier tone, but maybe remove the bits about why people disliked it in Season 4 and 5.

I agree with removing the reference to Jumping the Shark, since that's an IUEO trope for either reactions to shows within shows or references to the term in works.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.
