    Original post
While working on fixing the definition of Designated Love Interest, a few of us tropers came to realization that Relationship Writing Fumble might need a rework as well. Relationship Writing Fumble is currently defined as a platonic relationship coming off as romantic to fans. When we were looking at Designated Love Interest we found many examples of Designated Love Interest (a romantic relationship coming off as platonic) being listed on Relationship Writing Fumble instead. I've also noticed there are examples that have nothing to do with romance at all but are instead just fans misunderstanding writer intent with backstories and how characters relate to each other in general.

We touched on ways to try to improve the trope in that other thread and considered a few solutions:

- Changing the name of Relationship Writing Fumble to something emphasizing that this is about platonic relationships being mistaken as romantic.

- There might be a Missing Supertrope about writers accidentally implying different relationships between characters than what was intended, which is why people are dumping those kinds of examples on Relationship Writing Fumble.

The "Platonicity Not Perceived" suggestion sounds decent.

Since this thread is clocked, should we just put the sandboxes (Sandbox.Relationship Writing Fumble and Sandbox.Friendship Writing Fumble) in place with the supertrope being exampleless (as with a lot of other supertropes) and Main.Friendship Writing Fumble (or a different name if we hold a new vote) having the examples currently on Main.Relationship Writing Fumble?

I suppose any wick cleanup that needs to be done (it was already done for Designated Love Interest) can be moved to Short-Term Projects if this clocks out.

Resurrecting this one because the reason it was stalled was because the mods never moved the sandboxes in place while non-mods (which included myself at the time) couldn't do that themselves, so I'll go ahead and do that so this thread can hopefully get back on its feet.

Edit: And done. Main.Friendship Writing Fumble is now live, Relationship Writing Fumble is now a supertrope, and the subpages have been moved. Here are the wicks, and on-page examples might need to be looked through. I don't know if Relationship Writing Fumble having an on-page example section is necessary, since it's broad enough to have 12 subtropes, and broad supertropes often don't have example sections of their own.

OK, so since I closed two threads, I'll probably work on this next; I previously worked on Relationship Writing Fumble's now-subtrope a couple of years ago. Most wicks are already on YMMV subpages, so for those pages it would be a matter of moving ones that fit Friendship Writing Fumble to that name while leaving the rest alone.

I'm not going to bother adding on-page examples since this is such a broad supertrope (with subtropes including Audience Reactions with thousands of wicks like No Yay, Fan-Preferred Couple, and especially Ho Yay).

To kick this off. From YMMV.Once Upon A Time:

  • Relationship Writing Fumble:
    • Emma and Regina's interactions often come off more romantic than the simple friendship the creators say they intended it to be. In earlier seasons, the chemistry between Jennifer Morrison and Lana Parrilla led some fans to believe that they were being set up with Belligerent Sexual Tension, not helped by how often the two love to invade each other's personal space. Season 4 took this to the extreme, with one episode being devoted entirely to Emma attempting to rebuild her friendship with her and showing that once she does, the two have eaten lunch together enough that Emma knows Regina's dieting routine. Emma's devotion to Regina is also startlingly like that of a lover, especially in the Season 4 finale, where she sacrifices herself to save Regina. While the creators and Morrison have tried to spin it as her saving the town, the Season 5 premiere has multiple characters, including Emma's actual love interest Hook, refer to it as her sacrificing herself for Regina. Some fans have also interpreted Regina's constant insulting of Hook as jealousy over his being with Emma. Despite both of them having canon love interests, many fans are convinced that Emma and Regina are the show's Official Couple. It helps a bit that they share a son in different ways — Emma is Henry's biological mother, while Regina is Henry's adoptive mother. Both are devoted mothers to Henry, so Emma and Regina's relationship to each other and Henry can play as Has Two Mommies.
    • Snow and Red are incredibly close, and most of their scenes are full of Les Yay. Red even chooses Snow over her own family in a scene that would still make sense if they were lovers. Red may be a Shipper on Deck for Snow and Charming, but some of their scenes are written like they're a couple.
    • Emma and August have killer chemistry Most of their early scenes - particularly in "7:15 AM" - have lots of flirting that suggests they may have been planned to hook up eventually. Season 4 lampshades this, with Hook getting jealous when August returns.
    • Ariel's debut episode does revolve around her interest in Eric, but she has only one scene with him. Far more screen time is devoted to her friendship with Snow - with whom she makes a strong emotional connection. She even chooses to help Snow rather than go after Eric.
    • Emma and Lily...good God! Their story plays very much like two runaway teenage lovers, and their last scene together is pretty much a break-up. If Lily had been a boy, the situation would immediately be interpreted as a love story. Naturally the Les Yay is played up even more in their further scenes.
    • Charming and Anna of all people. While the episode makes it clear they have a platonic friendship - he knows she's Kristoff's fiancee within their first scene together - the two have lots of chemistry and the scene after he's defeated Bo Peep has them getting quite physical with each other. This was before he met Snow, so he could have had a crush on her, but nothing comes of it.

These seem to fit the friendship part. Should I simply change the wick to Friendship Writing Fumble or rewrite them as the first one is very long and the others are short?

Okay from American Horror Story: Coven:

  • Relationship Writing Fumble: According to show creator Ryan Murphy and Cordelia's actress Sarah Paulson, Cordelia and Misty Day have a mother-daughter relationship. However, they are a popular ship within the fandom. Misty's quick hero-worship of Cordelia comes across more like a student who has a crush on her teacher. While Cordelia teaches Misty magic, she even tells her husband to get out so she can do so, making Misty stay when she tries to leave and acts like someone mad that their ex is interrupting their date. Cordelia also quickly grows attached to Misty and is crushed by her death, which haunts her for years, and which she takes harder than the death of her husband. When Misty is eventually revived in Apocalypse, Cordelia is overjoyed at seeing her again and says that despite knowing her for such a short time, she's missed her forever. The last we see of either is after Mallory brings Misty back, with the two embracing each other. Paulson and Lily Rabe also have a natural chemistry which makes the two come off a lot closer than they should be in the story.

I am the one who made this entry. But I am unsure if it still fits under the new trope. Like the two aren't really related but they are suppose to have a mother-daughter like relationship which just didn't come across that way to a lot of fans. Would that still fit as a friendship writing fumble?

[up]If you aren't sure if something fits Friendship Writing Fumble, I don't see why it would be a problem if you left it under Relationship Writing Fumble, since the latter being a supertrope to the former means examples of the former are already all examples of the latter. The wick cleanup is simply because listing examples under subtropes takes priority over listing them under supertropes.

[up][up]We already decided to call it Friendship Writing Fumble two years ago. This thread is only open so any wicks that fit the subtrope can be moved there.

Is the redefinition of Designated Love Interest to unintentionally platonic as opposed to contrived/rushed examples implemented/ready to begin cleanup yet?

On Relationship Writing Fumble, I moved Foe Yay Shipping, Incest Yay Shipping, No Yay, Fan-Preferred Couple, and Derailing Love Interests out of the "subtrope" list to a "see also" section.

No Yay because it includes intended squick reactions.

The shipping ones because they are not necessarily based on how a canon relationship is perceived. Also the definitions that were being listed for them were incorrect.

Derailing Love Interests because it's not YMMV.

[up]I think I just directly moved Relationship Writing Fumble's examples to Friendship Writing Fumble after moving the descriptions to Main/. Any examples that don't fit the latter might still need to be removed; I don't think the former needs on-page examples since it's a broad supertrope.

[up]The intention was to allow any platonic relationship. I guess we can file this under Tropes Are Flexible.

I'm pretty sure there were other crowner options that included the word "platonic" and permutations thereof instead of including the word "friendship", but they were downvoted. (But there's no way to check since the crowner seems to be gone.)

Crown Description:

Consensus was to rename Friendship Writing Fumble due to issues with the name (particularly, the fact that it can refer to platonic relationships other than friendships, such as familial ones). What should its new name be?
