A thread discussing similar tropes. If thread participants agree that two (or more) tropes really don't seem distinct enough to be separate, one can start a thread in the Trope Repair Shop for further discussion.
Before asking "What's the difference between these tropes?", check the Canonical List of Subtle Trope Distinctions and Laconical List of Subtle Trope Distinctions lists. They may contain the answer. Feel free to contribute to them, too.
I've decided to start a new cleanup thread dealing with trope similarities. This thread is for discussing tropes that appear to be a duplicate of another trope, and if it's agreed upon that the two tropes talked about are similar enough, one should start a thread about it in the Trope Repair Shop.
I'll start with my issue...
Asian Hooker Stereotype and Mighty Whitey and Mellow Yellow are pretty much the same trope—they both involve a white man and an Asian woman.

Is Almost Famous Name (a name very close to a celebrity's) sufficiently distinct from Named Like My Name (a character shares a name with a celebrity)?
^ Where do you see the concerning overlap?
There are examples on Almost Famous Name that are not "someone's name is very similar to a celeb" but rather "someone's name is that of a celeb". Eg.
- One of the main characters in Office Space is named Michael Bolton. Which was a fine name until that no-talent ass clown became famous and started winning Grammys.
- Twilight Zone: The Movie: In "Kick the Can", Mrs. Dempsey's husband was named Jack Dempsey. When Mr. Bloom jokingly asks her if he was the fighter, she clarifies that he wasn't.
- An episode of The Vicar of Dibley involved Geraldine booking a musician named Reginald Dwight who she thinks is the one known famously as Elton John, but he's an accordionist with the same name.
I get that they're different jokes though similar in spirit, so I suppose these should just be moved?
Don't we already have Named After Somebody Famous as well for when the characters do share names with a celebrity?
Excuse the double post, but what's the difference between Deus Angst Machina and Cosmic Plaything?
In Cosmic Plaything, the universe/cosmos literally has it in for a specific character while Deus Angst Machina is when a character has an improbable amount of bad things happening to them. At least thats what the difference appears to be by looking at the description. Din't know how feasible that is as Cosmic Plaything has quite examples that seem to be examples of Deus Angst Machina.
Macron's notesSo basically Cosmic Plaything has to involve an actual Powers That Be making the character's life miserable, while Deus Angst Machina is when the bad events are caused by random chance? And how does the latter relate to Trauma Conga Line?
What is the difference between Big Blackout and Power Outage Plot?
back lol^Scale. Big Blackout features a large area going dark as an omen, while Power Outage Plot features the characters trying to live through an outage that might be localized to just their space. They can overlap, like in the recent season finale of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which featured the cops trying to get through a blackout that knocked out large swathes of NYC.

So basically from what I can tell:
- Big Blackout - Large blackout occurs
- Power Outage Plot - Plot revolving around a power outage and how the characters deal with it, whenever it be on a large scale or not
That’s how I interpret it, yes.
How are One Person, One Power and Single Power Superhero different?
We can never truly eradicate the coronavirus, but we can suppress its threat like influenzaOne Person, One Power is a setting in which Single-Power Superheroes are the only kind that exist.

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.- So, One Person, One Power is a Sub-Trope of Single-Power Superheroes? Because I'm seeing works that have entries on both pages, and seeking simplification.
Well, just LightNovel.A Certain Magical Index, but I only looked at the first folder...
Disambig Needed: Help with those issues! tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13324299140A37493800&page=24#comment-576I would say so, yes.
Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing. This ATT thread has raised the question, of what if any difference exists between Big, Screwed-Up Family and Dysfunctional Family.
Personally, I kinda thought they were redirects to the same trope until I saw it, no exaggeration.
According to Dysfunctional Family, Big, Screwed-Up Family is more numerous in scale and usually isnt played for laughs. Not sure if thats a big enough distinction
Macron's notesPerhaps "screwed up" in ways that are actually harmful to the family relationship?
While in DF, everyone just behaves weirdly without actually damaging the family?
We can never truly eradicate the coronavirus, but we can suppress its threat like influenzaBehaving weirdly without harming the family is Quirky Household and uses that fact to distinguish itself from Dysfunctional Family.
I guess they're too close to be separate then.
Let's merge?
We can never truly eradicate the coronavirus, but we can suppress its threat like influenzaJust going by the examples and the description, I think Big, Screwed-Up Family is supposed to be about families that are wealthy and powerful, who suffer problems as a result.
Yep, this was my impression as well. Big, Screwed-Up Family is for wealthy, prominent, and well-known families whose dysfunction is a step up from the “normal” Dysfunctional Family (as would be in a sitcom). I imagine them more noble and murdery. I would not be opposed to some tightening though.
So Big, Screwed-Up Family can include whole clans?
We can never truly eradicate the coronavirus, but we can suppress its threat like influenzaThat appears how this trope is commonly used.
Adult Fear can cause Realism-Induced Horror, they're overlapping concepts, but RIH is just about things being portayed so realistic that they're scary in general, regardless of if it would qualify as Adult Fear.
