In other words, bar the romance and the somewhat different mechanics of Pokemon Showcase, they basically recycled Dawn's contest arc.

The Pokémon anime is currently undergoing an unrecognized trope known as Popularity Mooching, hence why the 5+ crowd has become completely cynical towards it.
Popularity Mooching is what happens when a Sleeper Hit becomes so popular within a single demographic, other franchises start to Follow the Leader and use it to fuel their own popularity. They'd make Shout Outs, plot references in episodes, cameos from said cast, change the target demographic, and the network will play older films or TV shows with said cast (even if it is an Old Shame).
But this is a negative trope. Popularity Mooching leads to They Changed It, Now It Sucks!, Dork Age, Jumping the Shark, Fanon Discontinuity, Adored by the Network, Creator's Pet, Network Decay, Denser and Wackier, and Periphery Hatedom. Depending on the influence of the popular franchise, in a few years, it and the franchises affected will be Deader Than Disco, and may even trigger a Genre-Killer.
So, in this sense, the anime is mooching off Yo-Kai Watch to attract child viewers at the expense of older viewers. Other cases include The Simpsons, which was family friendly until it mooched off South Park to attract those who love offensive humor. The Suite Life of Zack & Cody was also family friendly until the dual successes of High School Musical and Hannah Montana, which caused it (and all of Disney Channel's shows) to change its appeal to only teenage girls. And because of the success of Family Guy, most western animation not appealed to kids are crude humor with Designated Heroes and offensive comedy that could cause lawsuits.

The honorable Prince of the Sea: ManaphyI don't see what this has to do with the cleanup. That trope proposal wouldn't make it past TLP since the mods would nuke it.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?Eh. If the Sun and Moon anime really does turn out to be a desperate attempt to rope in more kid viewers from Yokai-Watch, then I think a They Copied It, Now It Sucks entry would suffice. The sentiment is definitely common enough to warrant it and I've already seen entries around this on other Pokemon related TV Tropes articles.
Can we remove the Germans Love David Hasselhoff part now?
Just another day in the life of Jimmy NutrinI have no intentions of making a trope out of what I said. I was only using that as an example of what could happen to the anime if it mooches off Yo-Kai Watch.
Well, tonight's episode with Greninja is just a few hours away. Bulbapedia is expecting for Ash to release Greninja, given you can receive it in the Sun and Moon demo (with a note from Ash himself telling the player to take good care of it).
The honorable Prince of the Sea: ManaphyGermans Love David Hasselhoff because I've seen mixed reactions
As for Ash-Greninja's release, fans were pretty mad over the anti-climax. I personally haven't seen it so I'll update this when I do.
There is one detail I've heard that screams Ass Pull. I wonder how long it would be before that little decision negatively affects Sun and Moon given that Masada said something along the lines of getting Ash-Greninja from the demo was to entice anime fans into the games and play like your are Ash? Like there goes the reason to watch SM at all.
Here's something I noticed, much of the backlash to Sun & Moon is due to its perceived lack of a league, despite the leagues always ending in disappointment and...backlash.
Sounds like a case of Hypocritical Fandom. Add?
Can we talk about the Germans Love David Hasselhoff part now? I don't think it's that more hated in Japan.
Just having "lower ratings" doesn't mean it's dead. Everything gets lower ratings these days.
Just another day in the life of Jimmy NutrinHypocritical Fandom is one of those tropes that needs to die because it's solely there for Flame Bait.
Besides, I've seen people make good points for how the league was handled horribly.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with? While I don't think Hypocritical Fandom needs to die I agree that there's no reason to add note of it in regards to people being upset over the apparent lack of a league. Namely because if Ash had won the the Kalos league any fans who chose to continue watching would probably be fine with whatever he does provided his portrayal isn't completely butchered (which is something Sun and Moon might end up doing even worse than Black and White) and that he's doing something the can fall in line with him becoming a Pokemon Master. This was proven with the Orange Island League and especially Battle Frontier which wasn't even really a league. It's not so much that people don't like Ash no longer competing in leagues. It's just that after all this time he couldn't win ONCE and what he'll be doing instead is just so absurd in many's eyes. Going to school after being a quest to To Be a Master for over two decades? No way people will take that lightly...

Could we chalk up what happened to Serena to They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot?
You could make an entire page of They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot dedicated to the anime and I would bet that page would require to be split into different sagas whatsoever. We'll wait and see. Just like Sun & Moon.
I've checked out the ratings in Japan, and i've found that Pokemon XYZ's ratings are just as good as, if not better than, Yo-Kai Watch.

Just another day in the life of Jimmy NutrinOverall or just recently? Because last week's ratings has XYZ not be in the Top 10 while Yokai Watch is still there.
For the most part, it's been around the same as Yo-Kai Watch, and often higher. Both get in the 3s and 4s.
Just another day in the life of Jimmy NutrinI'd rather not have any They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot entires. You could play a drinking game with them.
I heard it was the other way around. Regardless, wait until all the episodes of XYZ are done and rated before we can decide whether or not it got better ratings than Yokai Watch.
Honestly, the "no gyms" thing doesn't bother me that much as a game mechanic. I just wish Ash would have won what would probably be the last official league in the series before heading to a region with no league.
Also, on the YMMV page, there's an entry that I want to fix in the Broken Base section that has some unnecessary CAPS and extra punctuation in there.
- "Not to mention, the reason that such an implosion would occur in the first place was that the fans aren't even asking for Ash to suddenly become an Invincible Hero. They just want him to win at least ONE video game-based league!!! This had many fans blaming the writers for thinking that the moment Ash wins a league, he would suddenly retire and the show would end despite him winning the Orange League and the Battle Frontier proving otherwise."
This is something that's really kinda bugging me...namely because it screams of anger and frustration. Understandable since...well, you know...but the point is, I feel like even the YMMV entries should be kept civil.

I've also found that ratings for shows have declined across the board. Back in 2012-2013, top-rated shows got 15s and 16s, with the lowest rated of the top 10 getting 5s and 6s, but now top shows are lucky to get a 10, and some shows in the top 10, like Pokemon, only get 3s and sometimes 2s.
Just another day in the life of Jimmy NutrinSo... Would the theory that Alain unknowingly cheated in the Kalos finals be viable for Epileptic Trees?
Long Story Short: People believe Alain's Charizard was roided up and that's how he was able to beat Ash.
The final episode has aired: It is implied that Serena kisses Ash goodbye as she prepares to head for Hoenn.
The honorable Prince of the Sea: ManaphyI watched it. Sounds like you can chalk that up as an Author's Saving Throw. The reception to that is monstrous.

A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh.
Some fans have also reacted negatively to Ash not mentioning his time in Hoenn to Serena, giving out the implication that the writers refuse to do a Call-Back or a Continuity Nod, and basically put the anime into Negative Continuity, or Advance Generation into Canon Discontinuity despite (or maybe due to) Ash's success in the Battle Frontier. But still, they have learned their lesson from Best Wishes and gave a proper farewell episode to the rivals. Which is quite a nice touch before the anime jumps over a Sharpedo into Denser and Wackier territory.
