This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.
Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:
- If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term
. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
- If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
- You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
- Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
- If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
- Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

I know you don't agree with me and this but all I will say is this is a bit tricky as these tropes are things that do objectively happen in the work but it wasn't intended so it is up for the audience to decide.

...And not everyone will agree. Hence why I think it's subjective. When you leave things up to the Audience, it's inherently YMMV, hence why CM and MB are the way they are even though they're 90% objective.
Think of it this way. Examples Are Not Arguable. If there's any ambiguity whether or not something is or isn't true, then it can't be objective. It simply isn't how tropes work. I'm not even talking about intent right now; just the pure basics of how tropes function. They either are or aren't present in the work. If there's room for disagreement depending on how the audience sees things, it's either a shoehorn or subjective. You can objectively say that fans see a character as having an Informed Attribute. You can't objectively say the character does have an Informed Attribute, since it's open to interpretation.

I think the reason it clocked out was in part because it was pretty much agreed that there wasn't an issue to resolve with it; I don't think any work is necessary.

Should I do a wick check for Badass Beard? About a month ago I brought it up in the zero-context thread for the amount of zces it has, and it was also mentioned in the Badass Tropes cleanup thread, but that hasn't been active in a month.

Hey so I was looking through Tropes Needing TRS and I discovered that Vandagyre added an entry for Redshirt Reporter with a complete wick check.
~Vandagyre, do you specifically want to be the one to open that TRS thread, or could someone else do it with your wick check if they wanted? I probably won't open the thread because I don't know enough about the trope but I just wanted to know.

Oh my. That was the first wick check I ever did. I'm fine if someone else opens the TRS thread, but I can prepare a write-up at the bottom of that page to make it easier when a slot opens.
Edit: Redshirt Reporter Wick Check now has a write-up for the opening post and can have a thread created at any time.

The rename is a good idea, though I still think it'd be YMMV...I'm honestly surprised the other Informed X tropes aren't, because again they rely on audience perception rather than actual narrative intent.
