All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

See Tropes Needing TRS for a list of trope candidates for TRS.

A (not mandatory, informal) queue for prospective TRS participants can be found at the TRS Queue.

[up][up] Welcome. Grab yourself a sandbox like Sandbox.Male Gaze Wick Check, for starters. You can check out the wick checks for active TRS projects in thread OPs and copy over their folder formatting, if that'd help. Using the "related" tab on Male Gaze, you'll have to grab yourself 65, maybe 66 wicks to check (since the sqrt of the current wick count is 65.49). Come over to the Wick Check Project thread and folks can help you out.

What determines a TRS cleanup thread being relocated to Projects versus remaining open here?

My reasoning being that I feel many of the examples aren’t very deliberate (certain pages just talking about how they show people’s rear being one example).
This is likely because long ago Fast Eddie merged Baby Got Back into Male Gaze. (Baby Got Back was basically Shes Got Legs but for butts).

[up][up] If a cleanup is more complicated (entries need detailed discussion regarding what counts) we consider moving the thread to one of the cleanup forums. However, that hasn't always worked so threads get sent back to TRS when the cleanup thread loses steam.

Most threads that have been sent to projects have pre-existing clean up threads.

So, I was cleaning a characters page and found Memetic Hand Gesture... and it's a mess. The title name suggests that it's a ymmv page but it's both used for In-Universe and Real Life cases. Some of the examples also are a mix of ZCEs not explaining how the hand gesture is memetic/iconic or just mention a universal hand gesture like the middle finger that's not iconic in any way. It needs a rename and/or limiting its scope to either In-Universe or ymmv examples, and clean up. Should it get taken to TRS?

"title name suggests that it's a ymmv page"

Doesn't sound like that for me and it's not in YMMV.YMMV. If most examples are in-universe then the trope is used correctly.

ZCE however would be a problem, and I'd question tropeworthyness of it as a concept.

Well, if it has "memetic" in the title, then I expect the examples to be of hand gestures that became a meme (mostly in real life). The trope has more than one idea in it: hand gestures that became a meme (YMMV) and hand gestures that became iconic/a Running Gag (In-Universe). How come Memetic Hair is on YMMV but Memetic Hand Gesture isn't? What made the latter YMMV and the former not?

"memetic" means "contagious expression" and is used off-site about things other than memes. Not everything "memetic" is necessarily a Memetic Mutation (which points to Instant Web Hit for In-Universe examples, which may not be accurate) subtrope, at least in my understanding.

It's a rather convincing argument to me to instead rename Memetic Hair to Iconic Hair / Signature Hair.

I can foresee a broader Trope Talk what is Memetic Mutation and what is Signature Tropes.

Also found out we have Memetics in Fiction and Memetics, which pretty much repeat my point.

Then we may or may not need to rename Memetic Hand Gesture to Iconic Hand Gesture, as well.

I actually agree that Memetic Hand Gesture should be in YMMV like other "memetic" tropes are, and the one-line description is just "Any hand gesture that's become emblematic of the character, series, or situation in which it appears"... which is an Audience Reaction and not a trope to be found in the work. If it's not YMMV then it's trivia. Either way, it's external. I did however file it on Tropes Needing TRS under "should be YMMV" a few months ago, so suffice to say I agree with Selkies.

Where do we draw the line between "Memetic" tropes and "Signature" tropes?

I'd like to apologize for all this.

IDK, but either way both are typically classed as YMMV.

I'll go analyze Signature Tropes for the discussion since I've brought it up and I have nothing else to do.

Oh. Well, I feel like I should elaborate more in an actual thread, but I feel like the difference here is that "memetic" tropes are about things that catch on with fanbases and culture, while a "signature X" is used by the work itself to represent a character and it becomes an identifier in and out of universe. It's not a "meme" because it's not being spread around or altered in any way... it's just "you can tell that it's this character because of their signature trait".

Should I queue WebAnimation.Animutation as "A trope in everything but the namespace."?

[up] I'd personally say yes, though I don't know what the rules are about "tropes in all but namespace". I definitely think animutations are a genre, not a specific work—I've actually watched a few. They're basically the early 2000s Adobe Flash predecessor to You Tube Poop.

Speaking of, is You Tube Poop a genre, or a specific work? Because it too is listed under Web Animation.
