TLP Crash Rescue - Fixing prematurely launched TLPs and pages

Go To

Prematurely launched pages and pages that weren't fully fleshed out at the point of launching, are a big problem. Since these usually share several problems at once, this thread is aimed at re-running them through the TLP for fixing - the usual fix - or cutting them if they are too bad.

Problems this thread deals with include bad names, not enough/bad examples, unclear description, etc.

For the interested, here's a list of recently created pages. Launches

Note: Please do not request a mod to unlaunch drafts that don't have any issues besides lacking a launch notice/24hr launch notice. While 24hr launch notices are mandatory, there are a few exceptions to the rule. If you see a draft's sponsor launch a TLP without an announcement, it's best to remind them of our TLP Guidelines first. If they continue to repeatedly launch drafts without a launch notice, you can report them on Ask The Tropers or the TLP Community Issues thread.

OK; today's worklist is going to be short.

  • Cozzilla: This was moved from Italian Godzilla King Of The Monsters because the old title was "too cumbersome". I'll message the account that we don't do work page renames for that reason, but I'd like to see where the page properly belongs - I can't find any evidence of the old name.
  • Analysis.Golden Raspberry Award: This page doesn't seem to improve, and the creator didn't bother to reply to the message either. If nobody objects I'll cutlist it.
  • Media Flanderization: Only two examples, one of them pretty nattery and it's YMMV. Does anyone disagree with cutting?
  • Pak Attack: I did some cleaning and indexing; given the lack of commentary, I assume this is all.
  • Rational Fic: The main issue I see with that page is the lack of crossreferencing, the somewhat gushy description, lack of indexing and the fact that whoever made the pages didn't use YKTTW. Also, the fact that the redirect gets the most wicks. It's picked up inbounds at an impressive speed though.

Golden Raspberry: Nuke.

Media Flanderization: Nuke with prejudice.

Pak Attack: Cleaned up some of the indentation. There were some line breaks that put the definition below the term it was defining without bullets. Might have been a copy-paste from a doc problem.

Rational Fic: Those issues do need to be addressed. I suspect the increasing inbounds might be from the initial creators talking it up. Nothing wrong with that as long as they're not spamming. tongue

Media Flanderization sounds and looks like a The Same, but More Specific version of plain old Flanderization, and a too-fine distinction to qualify as its own trope. In short, no objection to whipping out the digital scissors.

YMMV.Avatar The Last Airbender The Serpents Pass is a YMMV page for a single episode. Is that kosher?

The series itself has a Fridge.Avatar The Last Airbender so I don't see the need for it.

The above mentioned pages have been cutlisted - we'll see what will happen to the analysis page.

New worklist:

Also, Avatar: The Last Airbender "The Serpent's Pass": Yeah, these are OK. That said, the content is of a fridge page so it should go there.

Today's worklist:

  • Cabin Boy: Stub in wrong namespace; creator messaged.
  • Cozzilla: Seems to be now in the right place, if I assume correctly that it refers to this page.
  • Premium Currency: The first and last bullet points describe stuff that don't belong on Bribing Your Way to Victory per that page. So a merge would not be suitable. However, with only two examples offering enough context I am quite favourable towards cutlisting and messaging the creator.
  • UnityUnited.Unity United: I am getting somewhat conflicting opinions on this - plus, given that it's branched off a forum roleplay, I think it does have some relevance.
  • VillainsDriveMercedesBenz.Villains Drive Mercedes-Benz: A misplaced trope page; plus, being made without YKTTW I have to wonder on the tropeworthiness. The examples all are chairsy, though.

Premium Currency and Villains Drive Mercedes Benz: Either kick to YKTTW or cut.

Unity United: I think it should be under whatever namespace is used for roleplay. The 'troping real people' issue that's been brought up -is it real people, or their internet personas in a way? That "people gave a shit about" comment still has to go. It's not nice.

About the whole rationalfic thing.

It's not really about lesswrong, although methods of rationality did provide people who are a fan of that kind of fiction a way to find each other.

It's mostly about settings where the world makes sense after you apply some rudimentary science to it. That page is mostly being driven by the http://www.reddit.com/r/rational/ community. We'd have no problem with moving it to our internal wiki until it's a bit more mature, if that would solve whatever problem it's causing.

Alternatively, I could go through the subreddit and start copying content over.

Villains Drive Mercedes Benzes: Cut it. There's no trope there.

Premium Currency seems like it might possibly be a valid subtrope of Allegedly Free Game or Microtransactions. Might. I'm not sure about that.

...No, wait. It is Microtransactions with a Groucho nose on.

[up][up]I'm not averse to the article itself, just the quality of it in its current state. It's ill-defined, overly gushy, and doesn't really fit the standards of the wiki.

I don't think anyone really has issue with the idea of a Rational Fiction page, given There Is No Such Thing As Notability.

I'll note Art the Gecko Makes a Friend here, because I've already messaged that editor (over Verdi) over indexing, crosswicking and stub articles.

I don't have a problem, or any opinion one way or the other, about a Rational Fic page.

I do have an opinion on it not meeting TV Tropes standards. If it's brought up to speed, then all's good.

@Hireo: The problems already mentioned do need to be fixed to bring the page up to standards. Larkmarn and Septimus are tropers well worth listening to, and several others who have commented have excellent records.

Re: "Rational Fic": quoting EY probably counts as gushing.

To counter the gushing, I'd recommend expanding the part that says, "Be warned". That was a pothole to Internet Backdraft for a reason: while There Is No Such Thing As Notability, this is not a genre that everyone ever is going to enjoy. I also never intended the page to be distinctly "Stuff EY and his gushing followers like", because while I do hang out with that community, I actually have plenty of personal and ideological disputes with the official Rationality Cult myself.

Overall, if there's some way to not be cultish and have a page for a tiny but existent genre of stories that some few people like, that would be cool.

On the upside, since it's at least partially fanfic-focused, it's not like it'll ever be the main thing anyone sees on TV Tropes.

Herp derp.

To me, the gushing comes from the fact that it seems to describe the genre as the only way to make works without Poor Communcation Kills and the like. It sounds very implicit to that page. Also, I see that the issues I pointed out earlier haven't been fixed.

Anyhoo, rest of the worklist:

Curiously Flammable: Cut; it's really not a trope, just something that happens, and a throwback to the bad old days of "Neener, neener, this is wrong". It could just as easily be called You Fail Burning Someone Forever.

For today, can someone please keep an eye (or a lock) on Main.Chronopia? The creator completely disregarded my note that it was in the wrong namespace, hence I had to move it this morning, and I am worried that they will just repost it there. They have also some example context problems.

I don't see it.

I'm afraid I don't really have the time to deal with the issues you've listed myself. Some of what's been suggested is very much actionable, like adding links to it on other pages (although I think we'll hold off on that until the other problems are fixed). Others, not so much. I still don't understand what you mean by "gushing", so I can't really fix it. Considering eleizer started this trend having a page quote by him seems merely descriptive to me.

Most of the people working on that are going to be newcomers to the community. Addressing specific (actionable) complaints to the RationalFic Discussion page so that the newcomers have a central place to sort through them would be a good idea. Also to keep people from spamming the YKTTW crash rescue thread about it.

I don't think anyone would be too upset if you removed it though. Right now people are recommending interested parties edit the internal wiki instead of the tvtropes page. If you do decide to keep the page around, it's probably going to take some time to get it up and running to your standards. There aren't really any dedicated tvtropers in the fandom.

On Rational Fic, frankly I think that that page is past the point where a cut would work. Anyhoo, I won't comment further, as describing genres is not my area of expertise.
