Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/NoRealLifeExamplesPlease via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]

LRLEO tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/LimitedRealLifeExamplesOnly via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

joke folder pls

catching up:

~Miss Conduct: splitting up for each trope mentioned

i am beating the techbro horse here but "twenty-something fratbros who are either secretly dumb and got into the field for the money or future Corrupt Corporate Executives" isnt mutually exclusive with tech mogul, especially since Musk is currently tanking Twitter

let us not stoop to defending muskrat mmkay

"mostly because they're all too old now" - techbro isnt limited by physical age. people were calling bill gates after his divorce a techbro for the tantrums and attitudes he had even after he hit middle age

i will adjust the girlboss example to make it clear that no, girlbosses do not need to be in tech to count. but "tech girlboss" is a thing. i didnt even know Girlboss Feminist existed

—-

Bury Your Disabled: "particularly the Downs Syndrome abortion example, which comes off as trying to push a pro-life agenda"

ive worked for an abortion clinic and i dont really see this or other examples pushing a pro-life agenda; while i can agree with it being a narrative trope, the description of the trope

i would personally prefer to split "intentional murder of disabled due to their disability" from "yet another work fridging minorities"

—-

i am against NLREPing Mercy Kill, or at the very least, send it to NREP. i do not know where official wiki policy stands on IRL death

similarly i do not know where we stand on removing IRL examples for the reasoning that [trope] is controversial IRL. i recall the thread discussed if it caused active arguments to be a yardstick

—-

About Makeup Is Evil: even if Spare itself was determined to not warrant a trope page, i do not think it automatically disqualifies using examples from the autobiography

Plasma Power: "mentioning Hitler" shouldnt be grounds for immediate NLREP; the trope description goes into detail on old attitudes towards those who wore makeup. social conservatism (which the Nazis were probably huge fans of) influencing the trope in fiction also influenced real-life shunning of those who wore makeup

"I’m wondering, why are people so persistent in shoehorning tropes into real life examples?"

things in fiction are based on things that happened in real life all the time. it isnt like tropes sprung up from nowhere.

~Namra: please cite sources if you can re: nationalistic writing. it makes it easier to determine NLREP status

Regarding this post:

> Insignificant Little Blue Planet has been NRLEP since before 2013 (which is as far back as I care to follow the history of these pages). So I couldn't begin to tell you why it got NRLEP'd or why the chosen label was "controversial"... since the decision is over a decade old.

> Anyway, we don't use the "this one is NRLEP, so this one should be too" logic. The examples for Earth Is the Center of the Universe don't seem controversial to me.

I'd assume it was originally made NRLEP because it's a speculative fiction trope and therefore impossible in real life.

Until next time...

We really should NRLEP Mercy Kill because it's very pro suicide. All the examples are written like the "mercy kill" was justified. Imagine if someone with a suicide trigger saw that page, we might have blood on our hands.

I believe Insignificant Little Blue Planet is supposed to be speculative-fiction-only, since it's supposed to be viewing Earth from a cosmic scale that we humans can't achieve. I don't think the exact same logic can be applied to Earth Is the Center of the Universe, since, well, Most Writers Are Human, in real life it's a bit of a necessary weasel. That said, EITCOTU's RL examples do mostly suck, I'd just trim the bad ones and leave it.

We probably have enough upvoted suggestions to start the next crowner. I'll get working on that.

Posting to make public that we voted to ban Mercy Kill, Makeup Is Evil, Barefoot Suicide, and The Dark Arts as fairly straightforward in our imo. Haven't voted on the others yet.

w/r/t Defiant to the End, why isnt that NREP and why was it crownered despite one Ukraine example that was already removed?

Yeah, Defiant to the End wasn't agreed to have major issues beyond a need for cleanup and a potential need to set a NREP limit. That one shouldn't be on the crowner.

Ms Oranje Disco Dancer, I never said that mentioning Hitler should be grounds for NRLE Ping, I was just mentioning how funny it was that a lot of these sections mentioned him.

Neither did I, I just said that seeing him/Nazis in general is usually a bad sign (especially as the first example or in a place where they seem shoehorned), since that probably means, at best, it was written by a pedantic WWII nerd who might fill the page with impenetrable jargon, or at worst, by an apologist.

TBH I feel like it may just be a mix of infamy (people are going to know who Hitler was and will pay attention when they see him mentioned) and historical curiosity. Simply noting things that he said or did isn't necessarily meaningful one way or another — it's just objective fact (I hope).

There Is No Higher Court is entirely General Examples, except for the last one which is an Aversion.

If we do NREP Defiant to the End, what's a good ballpark figure? Fifty years? More? Less?

[up]You might get a better answer in the NREP thread. Simply discussing what to do with that section might not necessarily be off-topic in this thread since this thread is for cleaning up real life sections and rather than just being for enacting bans on real life examples; it's actual the process of adding NREP restrictions that's off-topic for this thread. This thread is where NREP proposals are discussed and, if they have consensus in favor of them, enacted.

[up]Not a big deal. The header for this thread is kind of long, so the part that discusses the possibility of adding NREP restrictions instead of NRLEP restrictions might be kind of easy to miss.

In Your Nature to Destroy Yourselves is probably too controversial (as a common "doomposter" trope), it's related to other NRLEP tropes like Humans Are the Real Monsters and Straw Nihilist, most of the examples are either general, hypothetical, or both, and that last one about China is probably ROCEJ-violating (the two links are to You Tube videos and I don't want to follow them or else my recommendeds might turn into a bigoted mess)

#15622: Dec 1st 2023 at 12:09:43 PM

[up]those anti-China examples can go. the fermi paradox and the medea hypothesis have citations and actually are about human/sapient instinct for self-destruction due to shortsightedness

hey thread

we had Sexy Sax Man on the docket a while ago but i dont think it made crowner

i cleaned up the examples but ~Miss Conduct removed them as 'gushing' despite added context for the Bill Clinton examples; im looking in the thread around that time but i havent found any consensus; ~AudioSpeaks2 wanted to NLREP it but that was as far as i can find

am i okay to restore it or should they stay gone?

I can understand Sexy Sax Man being made NRLEP due to attracting gushing examples about real people. And being related to sexuality, I guess?

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
