Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.
This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.
Common problems include:
- Conversation on the Main Page
- Flame Bait
- Squicky content
- Impossible in Real Life
Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.
If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.
If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.
Before adding to the crowner:
- The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
- There must be support from others in thread.
- Any objections should be addressed.
- Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.
When adding to the crowner:
- Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
- Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
- An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).
In order for a crowner to pass:
- Must have been up for a minimum of a week
- There must be a 2:1 ratio
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
- Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
- Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page
Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.
Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.
After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

Notes:
- This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
- Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
- As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
- The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

(x5) So, the real life folder on This Is My Human should be removed?
Your argument to remove real life examples is false, since the trope does allow non-anthropomorphic variants. That said, I sought to delete general "examples".
The trope requires a level of anthropomorphism. It's about animal characters believing that their owners are their pets, not the other way around. None of the real life examples involve that.
Think about it: What if readers want specific reasons why real life examples for the tropes in question are verboten?
Limpin' with the bizkit. The examples on Do Wrong, Right about failed terrorist attacks seem rather insensitive.
Keet cleanupAccording to my TRS thread on Good Colors, Evil Colors, this trope isn't NRLEP? It's very odd, and something that should definitely be fixed.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessCourtesy link for the argument in favor of making Good Colors, Evil Colors NRLEP that I posted in that thread.
Anyway, the reason I posted there and not here is because deciding whether a trope should be NRLEP is possible with TRS. That's how The Man Is Sticking It to the Man became IUEO and NRLEP.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Anyone concerned if I go ahead and nuke the RL examples on College Is "High School, Part 2" for "general" problems, and Supernatural Is Purple for not being possible in real life?
Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry PratchettI'm not sure they count as "general" examples. Most of them cite a specific place, time period, and/or type of school, is that not specific enough? That said, the one that starts with "YMMV, but..." should be removed, as it borders on Troper Tales.
"It's just a show; I should really just relax"I hope this wasn't out of line, but I removed a portion from that Real Life section complaining about "safe spaces" since it was, well, complaining about a topic with a political bent.
SoundCloudNuked that example for Examples Are Not Arguable.
Contains 20% less fat than the leading value brand! At best, the RL examples on College Is "High School, Part 2" talk about school/education systems in general. They don't name specific schools, and they don't say how the trope would apply to those specific schools. They violate several of the other guidelines on the How to Write an Example page as to how examples are supposed to work.
Going to nuke Supernatural Is Purple for not being possible in real life and general.
On the Possible in Real Life issue, New Job as the Plot Demands has a RL section. Life doesn't have a plot. (And I think the "hobo" example is insulting to the homeless
Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry PratchettWith regards to New Jobs As The Plot Demands, it depends. A lot of the fictional examples run the gamut from "character's job changing is never justified in-universe", which is my interpretation of the "as the plot demands" aspect, to "character changes jobs a lot for a justified reason such as being on the run from the law" to "character change jobs a lot due to a character flaw".
Also, while Hobo is often used as a general term for homeless person these days, originally it had the specific meaning of people who traveled around from town to town seeking temporary jobs. While a lot of people were forced into the lifestyle due to poverty, some took pride in the identity, leading to things like the National Hobo Convention.
"It's just a show; I should really just relax"TheReasonYouSuckSpeech.Web Original seems to have a lot of the problems TheReasonYouSuckSpeech.Real Life falls into, so I think they should both be looked at. A lot of the page is huge walls of text and they are near-universally praised as awesome, even if whoever they're giving the speech to is a real person or multiple people and not a fictional character, and many of them violate the Rule of Cautious Editing Judgement, are Righting Great Wrongs, and/or take advantage of There Is No Such Thing as Notability by citing Tumblr posts and Youtube videos. I think it should be made In-Universe Examples Only or No Real Life Examples, Please! if possible. (If this is the wrong thread for this kind of thing where should I go?)
Examples from the Real Life page:
"A user on Facebook delivered a brutal tirade directed at Todd Howard regarding the Fallout 76 fiasco."
" In the wake of Blizzard Entertainment's very controversial announcement of Diablo Immortal (a mobile entry in the series reviled for being simply a reskinned version of an existing mobile game rather than a true Diablo game for mobile devices; on top of the fact that series's fanbase is primarily a PC-based one.), Mark Kern, the lead designer for Diablo 2, had this to say regarding Blizzard's ill thought-out announcement and their clumsy handling of the situation and calls the company out over losing their touch with their audience, and also calls out game journalists and game devs harassing or mocking the beloved series' devoted fanbase who were (understandably) unhappy with the news."
" Hirokazu Yasuhara delivered a delicious one of these to Takashi Iizuka over his failure to prevent the failings of the Sonic movie."
Examples from the Web Original page:
" When covering the worst videos he has commentated on, You Tube commentator Akriloth 2160 gives one to Shaclone for attempting to deflect blame for getting banned from League of Legends due to his attitude."
" Arlo gives a 9 minute-long speech calling out Nintendo as a whole over Paper Mario: Color Splash, and how asinine and arbitrary changing the direction of the Paper Mario games is."
" In his Top 5 Best and Worst Animated Films for 2013, Ani Mat gave a short one to not only the people who worked on Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2, but to anyone who supported (i.e liked) the film as well, stating that they "should be ashamed of themselves, and even would need to reconsider their life." The resulting backlash was prominent, with many users on Facebook and You Tube calling him out for hating the film, and others for stating the comment in the video. He replied with on his You Tube page: [snip] In response to this, several users would chew him out for the comment. Although several comments against him were manually deleted by him, eventually blocking comments entirely, some of these managed to be saved, one of these being this trope, explaining what was wrong, before they unsubscribed:"
" In Z-Squared's review of Double Rainboom, the titular reviewer, after enduring what he considers a BAD, BAD, BAD "tribute" to one of his favorite shows, gives one to it's creator, Zachary Rich, after realizing he was the only writer. He has this to say to him:"

The Protomen enhanced my life.Oh, wow, I know Akriloth2160. Maybe I'll ask him about this.
Contains 20% less fat than the leading value brand! There's also many examples where someone attacks a piece of media that turns into attacking the creators/company behind the media, especially on the Web Original page.
The Protomen enhanced my life.Do you think I should add it to the crowner?
The Protomen enhanced my life.We should add Depending on the Writer. It is a characterization trope, and Real Life does not have a writer.
Limpin' with the bizkit.Angst? What Angst? has a real life section consisting mostly of 'general' examples, and this looks like it should be a narrative trope.
In my opinion, general real life examples should be condensed and put in Truth in Television (if it's okay).
Limpin' with the bizkit.Apologies if this has already been discussed, but I don't particularly want to sift through 300 pages of discussion. We generally disallow real-life examples of villain tropes since morality is subjective, but could Card-Carrying Villain reasonably be an exception to this, since it requires a person to describe themselves as evil or a villain? This is more of a hypothetical question; I don't have any person in mind.
Edited by Geodude6 on Jun 5th 2019 at 10:26:06 AM
No. Troping real life people is not allowed.
Limpin' with the bizkit.Would you mind elaborating a bit on why that applies here? The reason real-life examples of morality tropes are disallowed is because of who would reasonably be offended, and I see why that would be the case with every single morality trope. But since Card-Carrying Villain requires that the subject outright calling themselves evil, I doubt such real people would be offended by being called card-carrying villains.
It doesn't matter whether the trope can be objectively said to be correct. We simply don't want to talk about real people in terms of tropes. That's not what we're about. It creates a slippery slope that we've observed many times.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
Crown Description:
Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:- Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
- Must have been up for a minimum of a week
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.
What should we do about the explanations on the No Real Life Examples, Please!?
