Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

I know I've complained about this before, but I don't want to search through my entire forum history from the last several years (plus I have a vague memory of it coming up in ATT anyway), so I'm just going to go ahead and ask again: what exactly is Dub Text even supposed to be? It has a very negative description and sounds redundant to several other tropes.

Edit: And actually, reading the examples more, I'm wondering whether this would fit better under one of the 12-year-old-tropers cleanup threads anyway. :/

...I think I just hate everyone and everything involved with this page, TBH.

The Simpsons S 15 E 8 Marge Vs SSCCATAG has a few bashy entries about Marge:

  • Parental Favouritism: Marge towards Maggie. It doesn't matter how much the rest of her family clearly hates the song, as long as Maggie likes it she refuses to ever let it stop playing.

Again, I was scrolling through Fandom Rivalry and then there's this...

  • In all honesty, Call of Duty vs. EVERYTHING. Their fans seems to almost take pride in bemoaning anything and everything that isn't Call of Duty, even itself, judging from their Fan Wank about most of the games being on Nintendo consoles. While software-hardware porting limitations give legitimate reasons to dislike the game, their fans seems to criticize it for solely being on the Wii at all, with the best argument they can give being "OMFG GRAFFIX SUXORZ SO ITS GAY". Meanwhile the Call of Duty series and its fans are prime targets of most other game fandoms, being a very frequent subject of snarking.

Now I am not and never will be a Call of Duty fan because I am just not interested in military shooters. But, aside of the obvious Natter of "In all honesty" in the beginning... is this problematic? The "OMFG GRAFFIX SUXORZ SO ITS GAY" line seems to be... a little cringe?

I'm not sure how it looks from the COD fanbase over there, whether the childishness or the overpraising of their series is true or not... but can this be rewritten so it doesn't look as CRINGE or over-bashing the COD fanbase?

Also seems to run into a similar problem with my forwarded issue to Konami before: This seems too one sided against COD or 'COD insulting everyone, the rest are just ignoring'.

Just cut it. "everything" is not a fandom. The idea that call of duty fans attack every other videogame in existence is exactly the kind of overblown hyperbolic Tumblr-esque example writing that undercuts itself by being so over the top.

I think one-sided Fandom Rivalry are a plague of thinly-veiled complaining and should be deemed misuse but we may need TRS for that.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

([up]x6 regarding #12167) Going off the trope description, if it's not so much about poor quality visuals or missing content that the casual observer notices in the least, it likely doesn't count as Porting Disaster.

([up]x5) I'm having trouble seeing where that's bashy to Marge, but I'm unfamiliar with the episode or The Simpsons in general. Could you please clarify how the example is exaggerating her taking the Jerkass Ball?
([up]x4 regarding #12168) I say use the Ending Fatigue entry on YMMV.The Legend Of Heroes Trails Into Reverie itself, it's more concise and direct than the entry on that subpage.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the first bullet on Headscratchers.Awake looks like it's just complaining about the film and its enjoyers (rather than a question about the film itself).

  • Why do people like this movie despite so many Idiot Balls and Plot Holes?
    • Which people? This movie isn't very popular.
      • Then how does that explain having the IMDB rating of about 6?
      • I'd suspect that'd have to do with its obscurity. Only fans of the movie would care enough to go to its IMDb page.
    • Despite what the IMDb community thinks, people are allowed opinions other than yours.

[down]Edit: Just did so. Thank you.

On the topic of Fandom Rivalry, I’m not sure if this is the right place to bring it up, but I found this:

  • People who buy video games look down on pirates because their piracy leads to draconian forms of Copy Protection that end up doing nothing to the pirates and only hurt the paying customers (and in some cases lead to games being canceled completely). Pirates look down on paying customers and think they are all complete idiots because they paid for a product potentially made unplayable by DRM, when ironically the cracked version fixes the experience. There are others who will pay for the product to support the creators, then download and play the cracked, DRM-free version.
    • Another argument pirates often use is that paying for games despite said Copy Protection causes companies to feel like they can get away with anything and they feel the need to keep the companies in line to not get too greedy, ensuring what is claimed to be a 'healthy gaming industry environment'. However, the argument would be shot down when the game in question was genuinely good, developed with no controversies, and did not contain predatory things. As with what happened when several pirates encouraged pirating Metroid Dread.
    • Several pirates, especially those from Southeast Asia, tend to be silent as piracy was the only way for them to enjoy video games due to their low-income upbringings. Once they grew up and started making their own money, some would slowly let go of their pirating ways, especially with services like Steam, Epic Games, and XBOX Game Pass making games affordable.

These aren’t really fandoms, so I don’t think this applies.

Regarding Fandom Rivalry, per the trope definition:

In order for this to count, both sides needs to have their own attackers (bashing their rival show) and defenders (defending their show). Any lack of one element on both sides will make this no longer a rivalry.

One-sided Fandom Rivalry already counts as misuse. Should we make a cleanup thread for it (not necessarily a TRS thread, but a general cleanup thread like what we have for tropes like Narm, Hindsight, UU, Broken Basenote  etc.)?

I stumbled upon Dianetics on a wikiwalk earlier, and wow, this page is a bit of a mess. To start with, there's some snark in the description:

Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health is L. Ron Hubbard's self-help booklet, proverbial to Scientology and one of the most sold self-help books out there. How much of this is because of his followers buying massive quantities of it in order to artificially boost sales is an exercise left to the reader's imagination.

The few trope examples that aren't ZCEs aren't much better, and read mostly as stealth bashing against Hubbard and Scientology. I'm not a fan of Scientology, but should we really be using the wiki to complain about it? Plus, Dianetics' tropability is questionable to begin with, since it's a self-help book with no real narrative to speak of. Should this just be cut?

Sorry to derail this (Cut that BTW) but 4kids is proving to be troublesome, there is plenty of covert bashing of 4kids critics. I know the critics could be nasty but no, the networks did not demand they turn Japanese stuff into donuts.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Creator/FourKidsEntertainment

  • While 4Kids gets a lot of flak for their censorship, no one brings up how it was done to appease the network and television standards at the time. Non-cable networks in general are a lot more restrictive on what can and can't be shown in children's television. Stuff that could fly on Cartoon Networks Toonami block would never be allowed to fly on a non-cable network. Often, the censorship they did was done just to get the shows on the air at all. Most of the Americanizing (such as the infamous 'jelly donuts') of the anime they did was frequently at the request of the networks themselves.
