This thread is for general discussion of page quotes, whether to change, move or remove them.

Unused quotes should be put on a Quotes Wiki page (just replace the namespace in the URL of the wiki page you are making a quotes page for with Quotes/) or, if they don't have an article, on Quotes Looking for an Article.

Image captions are discussed elsewhere and have their own thread in the Image Pickin' forum.

[up] Real After All should be fine cut down to the last two lines. And with the excessive potholes removed, of course.

She Cleans Up Nicely has a weird quote that seems to be talking more about a staircase than anything else. Some good replacements on the quotes tab. This is my favorite (with or without the last line):

"It's a cardinal rule of fiction: whenever a plain girl dresses up for a big debut, she transforms into a stunning beauty. When I do it, I just look like me in a dress."

Trimmed Real After All and linked here in the edit reason.

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.

Can I get a second opinion on the current quote for The Three Faces of Adam? I feel it's a bit too long and blocky for the main page.

The Rosers were red. The Drownies are blue. I know What the Thunder Said. Do you?

[up]Perhaps just shorten it to, "a man in his twenties brags about what he has put himself into, a man in his forties brags about what he has put into himself, and a man in his sixties brags about what he has left behind"?

That, or replace it with the one on the quotes subpage:

"A human lives three lives. The first ends with the loss of naiveté, the second with the loss of innocence, and the third with the loss of life itself. It is inevitable that we will go through all three stages."

Speaking of overly long quotes, I Coulda Been a Contender! is also at least a paragraph long. Unfortunately it doesn't have a quotes page from which to look for alternatives. Any ideas on how to trim it down?

Narm.Literature currently has two page quotes:

"One would have to have a heart of stone to read the death of little Nell without dissolving into tears... of laughter."
Oscar Wilde, mocking Charles Dickens' The Old Curiosity Shop

"[The Deerslayer's] pathos is funny."

I personally like the Oscar Wilde quote better, but I'd appreciate more feedback.

Reptilian Conspiracy and Snake People have the exact same quote. It illustrates Reptilian Conspiracy much better.

Unfortunately, neither have a Quotes page, and I don't have any ideas. For now, can I just cut it off of Snake People?

[up] Bit too soon, I'd say. If it were an in-universe quote it would be perfect.

I really don't like the quote on Baleful Polymorph. It's a weird song quote that doesn't really say anything about the trope. The quotes page has plenty of alternatives.

Prof. McGonagall: Professor Moody! What are you doing?
Prof. Moody: Teaching.
Prof. McGonagall: ...Is that a- Is that a student?!
Prof. Moody: Technically, it's a ferret.

Meryl: The rabbit spell. Yeah, it was a funny prank the first ten or twelve time I fell for it at Deadgrave's.
Jim: It's not a prank. It's a combat control strategy that also happens to be incredibly hilarious.

Foe Romance Subtext's quote was changed (seemingly unilaterally) a few years ago.

Former:

"Venom... I've been all over this city looking for you! You never call, you never write... It's like I'm the only one interested in making this relationship work..."

Current:

"Thou hast beat me out
Twelve several times, and I have nightly since
Dreamt of encounters 'twixt thyself and me;
We have been down together in my sleep,
Unbuckling helms, fisting each other's throat,
And waked half dead with nothing."
Aufidius to his blood enemy, Act 4, Scene 5, Coriolanus

I prefer the former.

[up]Yeah, the Spider-Man one is better. (Although the Zeroth Law example is pretty funny.)

[up][up]The Harry Potter one is excellent. Big improvement on the current one.

Re: I Coulda Been a Contender!, I generally don't like using the Trope Namer as the quote because, y'know, we just quoted it already. But one option would be to cut that speech down to this part that sets out the context:

"Remember that night in the Garden you came down to my dressing room and you said, "Kid, this ain't your night. We're going for the price on Wilson." You remember that? "This ain't your night!" My night! I coulda taken Wilson apart! So what happens? He gets the title shot outdoors on the ballpark and what do I get? A one-way ticket to Palooka-ville."

Evolutionary Stasis and Jungle Jazz have the same quote. Personally, I think it fits better for Jungle Jazz, as at the very least rhyme and syllabic meter are apparent, but I don't know if it's that good for either.

The quote for Troubling Unchildlike Behavior is about losing your virginity at the age of 12, which is unconstitutional to the trope because:

1.) The trope goes on to state that teenagers (implicating those as young as 13 since an age specification isn't given of the teen range) having sex, let alone any other mature behavior, isn't this trope because it's the norm in real life for them to do those things. Well, I know age ranges have bizarre cut-off points for what's considered acceptable behavior and what's not at certain times, but really, what difference is one year going to make? Because you'll be a "teenager" next year? Well that's just nonsense; the word "teenager"—which isn't even a century old yet—means nothing other than having the consistency of the "teen" suffix at the end of your age for the next seven years; "adolescent", the real denotation of a person going through puberty, is the more meaningful alternative, and most 12-year-olds definitely do qualify as adolescents in that regard. 13 isn't even the age of consent around half the globe!

2.) Speaking of the AOC, there are some countries which set it at a minimum of 12 provided the older party doesn't succeed a specified age and isn't exploiting the inexperience of the younger party.

3.) Most 12-year-olds, especially girls, have already hit puberty and have reproductive bodies, making their desire to experiment with their peers understandable.

4.) I haven't watched Red Dwarf, the series the quote source is from, but for those who are unsure of the context, the quote example could come off as very insensitive if the girl in question was raped and her virginity loss was thus beyond her control.

Twelve year old girls having full on sex is seen as disturbing and antithetical to childhood in the context of the quote and I think that's what truly matters here. I'm also not really comfortable removing removing on the basis that a 12 year old girl having sex is, like, the norm, when it isn't, at least not in most Western society. (And when people say "teens having sex" they usually mean high schoolers anyway. 12 year olds having full on penetrative sex is rarely encouraged in at least fiction.)

^^ Even when the 12-year-olds are using contraceptives? It's important to acknowledge that at age 12 most children are learning about safe sex through sex education at their school, so while they aren't encouraged to it, teachers recommend at least using birth control if they're going to break the law and engage in intercourse.
