YMMV / The Devil All the Time

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Did Reverend Preston Teagardin intend to drive Lenora to suicide with his words to her and his sermons, or did he "just" want her to get an abortion?
  • Catharsis Factor: To say people cheered when Arvin shot Carl and Sandy, ending their murder reign running in the background of the movie would be an understatement. While some could feel some sympathy for Sandy, there are none for Carl, who is a heavy Hate Sink.
  • Complete Monster:
  • Epileptic Trees: There is a dark theory stemming from an uncanny physical resemblance that the man that Arvin hitchhikes with at the end is Charles Manson, and Arvin is to be recruited into the Manson Family and participate in the Tate/LaBianca murders.
  • He Really Can Act: Tom Holland really wows the audience here. Not only does he prove that he is more than just Spider-Man, but he also manages to convincingly play a troubled individual ultimately driven to murder, complete with an improvised American accent.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Sandy obviously hates being a serial killer with Carl, who's a borderline abusive asshole, but it's clear she doesn't do much to prevent the killings aside from reporting them to the police.
    • Arvin is a toughened and unease kid, but it's clear the trauma inflicted by his father didn't help him at all and by the end of the movie he runs from the law after killing a preacher, two killers and a corrupt police officer.
  • Memetic Mutation:
  • Narm: Robert Pattinson's Large Ham performance combined with a silly accent and high pitched voice can get some unintentional laughs.
  • The Woobie: Emma Russell. Losing your son to a religious meltdown, your step-daughter to suicide and then your grandson after he commits a crime really does a number on an elderly person.
    • Lenora too, a sweet, innocent girl abused and manipulated into suicide by Preston.
