YMMV / Carry On Camping

Go To

  • Aluminium Christmas Trees: Sid and Bernie pay Mr. Fiddler £10 (at the time) in one-pound banknotes. Britain used £1 notes from World War I (when the pound note replaced the gold sovereign) until 1988 (when the note was demonetised, superseded by the £1 coin that had been introduced in 1983).
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: The bra-snapping scene is probably the biggest reason why this film made so much money at the box office.
  • Common Knowledge:
    • On the DVD Commentary for That's Carry On!, producer Peter Rogers reveals contrary to popular belief the BBFC actually had no issues with the Nudist Paradise clips that Sid, Bernie, Joan and Anthea watch because the nudity wasn't seen as titillating.
    • Unlike what the play Cleo, Camping, Emmanuelle and Dick and its TV movie adaptation Cor, Blimey! show, the attraction between Sid James and Barbara Windsor didn't start on the set of this film, with Windsor herself confirming that nothing happened between the two until Carry On Girls.
  • Critical Dissonance: Zig-zagged. It's agreed by everyone to be the best in the film series, but both critics and audiences debate over whether it's better than Carry On Cleo and Carry On Up the Khyber, even though all three are automatically named in this argument, with barely any use of Take a Third Option and treating them equally.
  • Dancing Bear: The film is mostly remembered for Babs' bikini top flying off and hitting Dr. Soaper in the face. It's a wonder why it's the most successful movie in the series...
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: The film ends with Peter getting drunk and finding his confidence. However, the things he did after getting his confidence include cheating on Harriet with Jane (who was no older than 18), making Mr. Muggins homeless, and then raping Harriet into making her listen to him. Will the dynamic change back when he sobers up?
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Betty Marsden said during filming to Dilys Laye that she always wanted to die with a glass of gin in her hand. In Denville Hall, a home for old actors, twenty four hours after arriving in July 1998, this is exactly what happened. Miss Marsden collapsed and died at the home's bar, whilst drinking gin.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: A character named Harriet Potter in 1969. The joke furthered when another character was named Charlie Muggins. Also, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows features Harry and his friends going camping for a large portion.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Joy is played by Georgina Moon, who would later be best known for playing Erotica in Up Pompeii.
  • Signature Scene: Babs' bra snapping off during an exercise class and smacking Dr. Soaper in his face. The scene's so iconic, it's even referred to by people that don't even like the Carry On movies, and is often called one of the most infamous moments in British cinema.
  • Values Dissonance:
    • One of the film's main subplots involves Sid Boggle trying to hook up with Babs, a teenage schoolgirl.
    • Peter Potter also has sex with Jane, another teenager, while drunk nearing the end of the film.
