"Game-breaking chaos ensues."

Twin Runes is an ongoing webcomic mini-series by Akenemnon, serving as a crossover between Undertale and Deltarune.

The basic premise involves Frisk entering the Deltarune universe during one of their many runs through the Underground, meeting Kris and Susie during their time there. Naturally, Hilarity Ensues as the two determination souls try to get to grips with what's going on.

The comic so far can be read here.

You continue reading the page's tropes. No-one was happy with this decision.

  • Abusive Parents: In the comic's official Q&A, this is implied by Chara when they, Frisk and Kris are asked about how their human/birth parents compare to adoption parents in their eyes.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: For Chara, compared to their portrayal in fanon, they aren't a murderer (as stated below), but more of a sassy know-it-all with abandonment issues. They don't represent the fandom in general, as much as they love to prod fun at the common misconceptions about them, but are the type to think they're a cunning genius, and as such can get angry whenever their theories are questioned and/or disagreed with (like the parallel worlds theory on Page 30).
  • Adaptational Villainy: Subverted and lampshaded by Chara, just like in canon. In the second day of the comic's events, Kris comes to believe Chara is a vengeful spirit or a driver for genocide, but they state against that, though mention they have heard that a lot before.
Kris: So, what exactly is YOUR deal? Are you some kinda vengeful spirit? You gonna tell me to kill people?
Chara: Not really, no. I do get that A LOT however... I mostly just follow the kid around everywhere they go and narrate their life.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Before introducing themselves to Kris and Susie, alongside other cases, Frisk is constantly referred to by them and other characters as "Mini-Kris".
  • Alternate Self: Considering this is a crossover fanwork, this is a given; Susie herself always refers to the UT counterparts of characters (like Frisk and UT's Noelle) as "mini doppelgangers" on Page 24, and refuses to have any plans of associating with her UT counterpart, Suzy, in the Q&A.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: In the Dark World, Frisk has green skin while Chara has red skin. Papyrus even points out the former's new skin tone.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It’s slightly implied, though never made explicit, that the DR Sans is the exact same being as the UT Sans. He greets Frisk with a familiar “sup kiddo” and they first enter his store and when asked by Toriel if Sans is Frisk’s legal guardian Sans claims they only met a few days ago while giving Frisk a knowing wink.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Chapter 45 reveals that Frisk doesn’t remember their age, and the next page takes it further and reveals they don’t remember anything prior to falling into the Underground. The tags in the chapter explains that Frisk’s “concussion” did more damage than expected. The Q&A also reveals Kris is the same, having been found by Toriel and Asgore in a dumpster at Frisk’s age, with no memory prior to it.
  • Answer Cut: After Kris and Frisk finished bonding with each other and Chara returned, Frisk asks Susie where Undyne went, to which Susie explained that Undyne was wondering where "the spaghetti guy" was, so she told her that he was under the sink. A Beat later, Susie asks if they think Ralsei's okay.
Ralsei (witnessing the bonfire that Undyne caused): I AM NOT OKAY!!!
  • Ax-Crazy: When sighted by Undyne on Page 25, Kris is promptly attacked and their soul is threatened by her. Fortunately, Frisk and Susie stop her from murdering Kris.
Frisk: NONONO! This human is off-limits!
    Undyne: OH COME ON!
Susie: Holy $#!%! You okay, Kris?
    (next panel)
Undyne: Just a teeeeeeensy bit of murdering?
    Frisk: Undyyyyyyyyne...
Undyne: Well, there go all our hopes and dreams... AGAIN.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Page 31 depicts Castle Town ablaze seemingly thanks to Undyne, and when Kris, Susie and Frisk return, the present Darkners and Mad Mew Mew are understandably in a panic. On Page 32, it's revealed that it was the result of another accident related to Ralsei, Papyrus and Undyne making spaghetti.
  • Berserk Button:
    • In Page 12, Chara is not at all pleased with Berdly's comment that "all humans look the same" (due to the fact that Frisk and Kris have the same skin color), and promptly gets Kris to slap him for it.
    • No matter what dimension, Kris does not like seeing Sans about.
  • Big "NO!" / Big "YES!": This happens when Toriel thinks of the idea of letting Frisk stay with her. Kris lets out the former of the two in upset and anger, while Frisk lets out the Big "YES!" happily to this news.
  • Brick Joke: In Page 19, Chara comes out of Deltarune Sans' grocery store, only to find that Frisk and Kris supposedly ditched them. 10 pages later (not counting the mini-pages), they catch up, chastising the duo for this.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: Frisk's first reaction to seeing the giant flower dinosaur (which they and Susie initially assumed was Flowey) is to calmly tell Susie that she might've upset it.
  • Character Development: Whilst starting off very dismissive of Frisk and really frustrated with their presence, Kris soon grows to appreciate Frisk a lot better, not only hugging it out with them, but finding some comfort in their equal circumstances and bonding like siblings.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: With Kris and Frisk, the back of their hair is colored red to indicate that they both wield determination, and due to being deceased, Chara doesn't. In non-canon art related to Undertale Yellow, Clover's back hair is colored yellow to match up with their sense of justice.
  • Commonality Connection: Kris and Frisk, by Page 27, come to grips with the fact that they had both been puppeteered by players before, with the latter coming to understand why they always started off at the beginning of things after getting a happy ending in Undertale. This control was severed from both of them following Frisk's trip into the Deltarune universe.
    • In the Q&A, Kris and Papyrus mention that they've both had trouble with Annoying Dogs before, when asked about how a whole wealth of things, including a concealed portal to Ralsei's Dark World, keep getting under Papyrus and Sans' sink.
  • Cuddle Bug: Frisk spends the first few pages of the comic hugging Kris constantly. On Page 7, they let go of Kris when they ask politely.
Kris: Would... you just let go of me. PLEASE!
Frisk: (letting go of Kris) Okay!
Kris: What. It was THAT EASY???
Frisk: Well, you said the magic word!
Chara: Indeed. It would be rude not to. That is just common courtesy.
(cue Kris screaming angrily under their pillow)
  • Cutting Off the Branches: Twin Runes takes place midway through a True Pacifist run in Undertale (around the time Frisk was set to deliver the letter to Alphys), and following Chapter 2's normal route in Deltarune (considering Berdly is alive and well here).
  • Deadpan Snarker: When Chara finally finds Frisk and Kris after they unintentionally ditched them, the two alternate counterparts each make a remark on how their disappearance explained why they felt less burdened recently, much to the ghost child's exasperation.
  • Demonic Possession: Both Kris and Frisk suffer from this, though strangely, due to unknown circumstances in the series, their players control over them had loosened, leading to them losing not just their stoicism, but also, unfortunately, access to anything that uses a UI interface, inventory included. Humorously, Frisk assumed that their mechanical behavior was what a concussion was like.
  • Diegetic Interface: In part 39, after the disappearance of the Castle Town SAVE point in the previous part, when the humans see that the Snowdin Town SAVE point is gone too, Kris asks Frisk if they're able to open their menu, which leads the latter to panic when they're unable to do so. A mini comic responding to a question regarding menus apparently being canon shows Chara being very confused when the Monster Candy Frisk picked up just poofed out of existence, followed by them freaking out when Frisk spawns an ITEM screen out of nowhere to view the candy.
    Chara: What even ARE you?!
  • Existential Horror: Frisk undergoes a couple of existential crises over the course of the comic, deconstructing their original stoic nature.
    • The first time around is when they realise they've been puppeteered by a player like Kris has, and it's this that properly establishes the duo as good friends and potential surrogate siblings.
    • The second time occurs after Frisk gets Undyne's love letter back from DR!Alphys, which is when they realise they know absolutely nothing about their past. It takes Kris giving a moral on how counterparts aren't exactly one-to-one versions of each other (highlighting their differences as well) for this to subside. One of the questions asked ultimately confirms this by showing how Frisk does not like eating moss in comparison to Kris.
Frisk: (grossed out) I don't know how you can like this stuff, Kris...
Kris: Hey, at least that confirms you're not me. You're your own nugget.
  • Good Angel, Bad Angel: Parodied. In Kris's dream where they're being married to Spamton for some reason, Frisk and Chara show up as their shoulder angel and demon respectively, but they're both giving Kris the same advice.
    KISS KISS KISS KISS
    KISS KISS KISS KISS
    KISS KISS KISS KISS
  • Loophole Abuse: Upon hearing Kris's explanation of what they understand about the Dark World, Chara exploits the world's tendency to "bring objects to life" by possessing their locket, reanimating themself as a Darkner and allowing everyone to see them.
  • The Stoic: After Frisk stops Undyne from killing Kris, Undyne lampshades that they usually aren't as chatty as they just were, leading to Susie acknowledging that Kris was the same way until recently (they usually just stare off into space). This is what clues Kris in to the fact that Frisk is also possessed by an unseen entity.
    • In a comic made in response to a question demonstrating the first instance of Frisk opening a menu, Frisk's face is completely devoid of emotion just like in Undertale. Justified due to the mysterious force that possessed them.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Chara brings up the theory that Kris and Frisk are technically the same person with a slight age difference. Evidently, they believed what Chara said, but they purposefully claim not to understand to annoy Chara.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: Chara spends a good amount of the comic as a ghost that only Frisk and Kris can see. By Page 33, they assume a Dark World form of their own, in turn becoming fully tangible and being inexplicitly revived (as a result of them becoming part-Darkner from the Heart Locket). It's by that point where they're finally visible in others' view, which Kris frustratedly lampshades.
Susie: Uh... Kris? Why is there ANOTHER one?
Kris: OH, NOW YOU CAN SEE THEM!?
  • Silent Protagonist: Kris and Frisk both subvert this in that they both actively talk throughout the webcomic. Undyne and Susie lampshade this in Page 26, in that they normally stare off into space or are mostly silent, which makes them both realise how similar they are in that sense.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Susie, in that her decision to tell Undyne where Papyrus was whilst Frisk, Kris and Chara were pre-occupied caused the Castle Town to go ablaze in Page 31, much to Ralsei's horror.
  • Vague Age: When asked about their age, Frisk realises that they don't even know their own age, much to the shock of Kris as well. It steers them into a 'second Existential Horror moment when they realise they know nothing about who they were prior to their adventure. Out of universe, however, it’s stated that Frisk is around 9 years old in Twin Runes.
  • Wham Shot: After the Great Fire of Castle Town is finally put out, a new Dark Fountain is opened, one that is NOT Kris's doing.
