According to the creators, The Abridged Series intends to follow the story from the prequel onwards filling in gaps as they go.

The main videos were originally posted on their youtube account, but not wanting to deal with youtube strike policy moved the videos to the head writer’s website.

  • Accidental Misnaming: Meme doesn’t seem to remember Tsugumi’s name or Hermione or Babe as she calls her.
  • Accidental Pervert:
    • Meme when sleepwalking.
    • Tsugumi around cute girls feels like this.
  • Acting for Two: Ivan Navi does this in every scene with Kid and Lord Death.
  • Adults Are Useless: Sid says he’s not going to bother stopping a fight because it’s his free period, and they allow that in this school.
  • Affectionate Parody: As silly jokes or off the walls comments are made, it’s clear that the people behind it are fans of the series and know it well.
  • Art Shift: While the main series uses footage from the series proper, the holiday specials use original art done by various artists.
  • Badass Long Coat: Maka as usual.
  • Bad Santa:
    • Lord Death makes a public announcement of an evil Santa that runs around and hunts people. The schools haven’t managed to catch him.
    • The Krampus is real.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: In episode one, Tsugumi ends up conversing with the narrator, who starts breaking down what it means to be a shonen protagonist.
  • Butt-Monkey: Tsugumi and Eternal Feather to some extent.
  • Cerebus Retcon: In the Kidmas 2019 special, Soul reveals that his mother used to push him to practice the piano to abusive levels. It’s hinted this was a major reason for going to DWMA and leaving behind his life as a piano player.
  • Christmas Special: Well, Kidmas special.
  • Crossover Ship: Kid and Stocking from Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt dated according to two-holiday specials.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Meme speaks in weird voices and can’t seem to remember anyone or anything but asleep she manages to fight a skilled fighter.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The holiday specials often do this, giving episodes to characters that haven’t shown up yet such as Kid.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Kid makes a quick one in the first episode.
  • Eagleland: The series takes place in AMERICA!
  • Fictional Holiday: Kidmas.
  • Foreshadowing: Sid: This year is going to kill me.
  • Halloween Episode: Tales from Death City.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Kana uses tarot cards.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Black Star thinks punching everyone will lead him to find a missing scarf.
  • Horror Host: Blair, Elvira Style, serves as one during their Halloween Specials Tales from Death City.

  • The Lost Lenore: Kid seems to think of his ex as one, extra points for being in a The Raven parody.

    • Solty Cereal: Tsugumi’s second voice, Kana, and various minor characters.

  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • In Tales of Death City 2 segment Death Child Theater 4200, while it starts off as a parody of Mystery Science Theater 3000 it devolves to reveal that it's a delusion of Anya to protect herself. It hints that in this parallel world, Asura won, plunged the world into madness, and all the heroes are gone.
    • The Kidmas special reveal that Krampus is real, and Kami has had him trapped in a basket until it escapes to go for revenge on her granddaughter.
    • There is an actual Bad Santa who hunts and kills people, even Lord Death, and the witches think he’s messed up.

  • Ship Tease: Soul and Maka from episode one.
