Trivia / Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links

Go To

  • Actor Allusion: In contrast to his performance in GX, Takehito Koyasu is clearly channeling Dio in his voice work for Saiou/Sartorius this time around. Likewise, he also channels Eddie for Pandora/Arkana.
  • Actor-Inspired Element: Mikako Komatsu, at dueling events, had notable skill with using "The Agent" deck. This transfers over to her character, Tori, as the decks she uses on high difficulty levels are centered around that archetype.
  • Conclusion in Another Medium: After the VRAINS anime was cut short, Duel Links' story mode is continuing right where the anime left off with the mysterious reappearance of Ai and Playmaker preparing to fight Varis if need be to decide the AI's future.
  • Dummied Out: The game's audio files revealed idle dialogue for characters, the rest of the playable characters saying the title screen, dialogue for characters using cards they don't have yet or cards that they never use but ties to them thematically, and duelists using Synchro, Xyz, Pendulum, and Link Summoning. Some of them have been added in later updates, while others remain unused for now.
    • Strangest of all is the inclusion of Ritual, Synchro, Xyz, Pendulum, and Link Summoning phrases upon data mining the SEVENS characters. While we always knew Rush Duel would reintroduce the Fusion mechanic, Rush Dueling as of right now is still relatively young, so there may have been an idea to integrate the SEVENS cast to Speed Duels. They are currently unused.
  • Marth Debuted in "Smash Bros.": Z-One finally gets a proper appearance in the English dub, after the 5D’s dub was Cut Short. He is voiced by Marc Thompson, who had previously provided placeholder dialogue for flashbacks and foreshadowing cameos.
  • Meme Acknowledgement: Konami acknowledged Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series by naming one of Tristan's skills Super Strength!. One of Marik's skills being "Access Denied" could be a reference to a memorable scene from the series where he couldn't unlock a door.
  • Milestone Celebration: In addition to holding celebration events for milestones of the main franchise (such as anniversaries), the game also holds celebrations for its own milestones such as 777 million cards distributed in-game, and with the release of Ghost Gal, a celebration for 100 playable Legendary Duelists (which, ironically, was primarily centered around Kaiba and Blue-Eyes). These events tend to distribute large quantities of gems, Legend-foil cards, and the coveted Dream Tickets.
  • Promoted Fangirl: Voice actress Jennifer "Jen" Silverman is a longtime Yu-Gi-Oh! fan and cosplayer who got cast as Sora when the character became playable. She even began cosplaying as him as well!
  • The Original Darrin:
    • Sam Riegel returns as Rex Raptor, having been replaced by Sebastian Arcelus in season 4.
    • Tara Sands returns as the voice of Mokuba, here in the game, as well as in the Dark Side of Dimensions movie, having been replaced by Carrie Keranen in Season 5.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • While most of the original English VAs returned, Mako is now voiced by Daniel J. Edwards, sharing a voice with Aigami. Edwards also takes over the voice of Sartorius from the late Maddie Blaustein.
      • Speaking of Aigami, Chiaki Kobayashi replaces Kento Hayashi who voiced Aigami in the movie.
    • Weevil is now voiced by Billy Bob Thompson and not Jimmy Zoppi, possibly due to the latter being busy with Pokemon, although Billy Bob does a near-indistinguishable job of replicating his voice.
    • Jimmy Zoppi is also replaced by Wolfe Scott as Lumis.
    • Para has his voice actor from episode 19, Sam Riegel, while Dox is now voiced by Eric Stuart as in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.
    • Espa Roba went from Sebastian Arcelus to Bryan Tyler.
    • Yubel went from Cassandra Lee Morris, her VA in GX, and Eileen Stevens, her replacement in the Bonds Beyond Time movie, to Alyson Leigh Rosenfield.
    • Yuma went from Eli James to Noah Benjamin.
    • Despite reprising his role as Dr. Vellian Crowler note , Sean Schemmel does not for Bronk, being replaced by Robb Moreira. He also does not reprise Paradox, who is instead played by Andy Manjuck.
    • Trey is now voiced by Nicholas Corda, replacing Brian Hovland, his VA from ZEXAL.
    • Though she had previously reprised her roles as Leo, Luna, and Tori, Eileen Stevens no longer voices Sora. He is instead played by Jennifer (Jen) Silverman, who also voiced Asana Mutsuba in Yu-Gi-Oh! RUSH DUEL: Dawn of the Battle Royale!! and Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS. This is due to Stevens becoming a union VA, meaning she can no longer reprise any of her original roles beyond what she already had contributed for the game. She was also recast as Sherry LeBlanc, being replaced by Alice Himora.
    • Jim "Crocodile" Cook was completely recast in both English and Japanese. Yuto Chikuma now voices him instead of Naoya Iwahashi in Japanese, and Andy Manjuck replaces Erik Singer for the English dub, though Manjuck does such a convincing soundalike, it's nearly impossible to tell.
    • Subverted with two characters from VRAINS. Due to a listing error in the credit, the voices of The Gore (Daniel J. Edwards) and Brave Battler (Marc Thompson) initially appeared to have swapped roles, but their in-game dialogue shows that this is actually not the case, as both sound the same as they did in VRAINS. This was later corrected in a patch.
    • Due to a dispute regarding renewed contracts, Emily Jenness opted out of reprising her roles as the other Bracelet Girls from ARC-V, leaving Zuzu as her only role. Celina is now voiced by Samantha Cooper.
  • Role Reprise: There was a lot of effort made to bring back the Seiyuus and English voice actors for their respective characters, especially for the Japanese dub. Notably, many of the seiyuus who are more active in the acting or music industry than in the seiyuu industry still returned, and even Manpei Takagi and Shinpei Takagi have returned as Yuto and Yugo, respectively, despite the two brothers having quit acting since 2017.
