  • The way Bouclair so unceremoniously reveals to Erina that her parents were executed. As flawed as Erina is, it's pretty jarring to see her experience loss. Dingo can only sum up her feelings like so:
"Orphaned in one sentence. Erina feels her world shatter... Family, joy, ambition, gone..."
  • Sips' (momentary) death.
  • Although it crosses into Nightmare Fuel, Gothi losing her face is also very sad. Episode 15 delves into the very tragedy of the events before Gothi lost her memory. She didn't just lose her power crystal, she didn't just (temporarily) lose her youth: when Goddrick carved out her face, he robbed EVERYTHING from her. She lost her people, she lost her family, she lost the life she knew, her innocence. Worst of all, Goddrick so cruelly made good on his promise when he said nobody would ever see her face again. Meaning that even if Gothi ever reunited with her loved ones, they wouldn't know it was her. So to top it off, he erased her identity...
  • Episode 16. Sips leaves the party, realizing that he is a massive danger to everyone around him. When Erina tries to dissuade him, he blows up, saying that for once, he needs to be able to fix his problems on his own. Erina takes this badly, interpreting it as him abandoning her, and storms off in a huff, refusing to even say a proper goodbye to Sips when he leaves.
  • Xanu's backstory. The guy's entire life was nothing but pain and suffering at the hands of a race that had Lack of Empathy. The only source of comfort he had was Gothi, his only friend. And even she couldn't stop him from going through his genocide of the foreclaimers.
  • Sips learning firsthand that Vicky is a werewolf who chains herself in the cabin every month so she can deal with her curse alone. Sips realizes he and this seemingly happy child are not much different. At seeing this, he approaches her and allows her to bite his arm so he can use his other hand. ...to pet her head. Possibly the first ever kind gesture she's ever had while a werewolf. Once she comes to her senses, all werewolf!Vicky can do is cry in Sip's arms.
  • Episode 24: When Gothi pulls Erina to one side to privately discuss Sip's increase in Murder Hobo tendencies as possible signs him of succumbing to his curse, Erina is dismissive of the situation and denies that Sips is her friend as she's still upset with him for splitting up the group. Erina then reveals she is also upset with Gothi for not stopping Sips, when Gothi points out Erina escalated the situation by also splitting Erina says she was trying to pre-empt Gothi leaving Erina. When Gothi points out she had no plans to leave Erina is both surprised and she finally breaks down and admits the reason she's been so jerky and standoffish is because she has severe abandonment issues as everyone she's ever know has either left her or died and she's been in emotional pain as she just found out her parents were dead and been broken up with and she needed support.
Erina: Y'know, I've always had people leave. Friends, family, either they move, get a new boyfriend like JOSHUA. Or... they die. Always... leaving, I mean I don't get it do I smell or something? What is it? Am I just... am I not enough?
  • Episode 28 doesn't end on a cheery note. Not only is Xanu and Sips still unconvinced that Foreclaimers are incapable of changing their way, but their rocky relationship with Gothi only gets worse. She tries to help Sips realize he shouldn't have to be a Murder Hobo, but he only delves deeper into the angry belief that a bad guy is all he is. Sadder still, in the process, he reveals why he took mischievous pleasure in cursing others: because if he has to suffer, so does everyone else. And when Gothi tries to appeal to his humanity, Sips bitterly responds that she's not defective because of her empathy, but because she has too much of it. Gothi feels lost, and Erina soberly wonders what's going to happen next. Neither of them know, only aware that tomorrow, their trip to the other Foreclaimer city will change everything.
    • Oh, and Sips learns that the final crystal shard is inside Clowen's pet toad. This does not bode well, and even Sips isn't happy with what this implies.
    • The implication that Sips does recognize Stella's Children are evidence the Foreclaimers can change, but between coming too far and Xanu's reminding him he kept a promise, he refuses to rescind his vow to kill them.
  • Episode 29 has Mesika's inability to accept Jack's insight that it's okay to be flawed.
    • Even though it's brief, the pink foreclaimer guard gives off a feeling that he has a hard enough time getting by without being reminded he has "less value" for being younger. When the Emperor brings it up that only being 20 years old has nothing on 200 years worth of experience, you can see the young guard flinch. And the poor kid is clearly scared out of his mind when the Emperor callously claims he'll either kill him or feed him to his own shark-hound if he feels like it.
    • Sips confessing to Erina and Gothi what his motivation is, much pressure from them and Xanu put together:
Sips: I WANT THIS TO BE OVER!! ....I just wanted this to be over... (choking) I don't want to be here anymore. I don't want to do anything anymore... I just wanted to finally do something that would help, that would make my life worth it!
Gothi: (Sympathetically ) ...In the end.
Xanu: (Disgusted) And you couldn't even do that right.
  • Episode 30 has Gothi confront Xanu to convince him to not genocide the Foreclaimers. The result is an anguished back and forth between the two which eventually leads the Xanu to alternating between yelling in rage and crying at the memory of his centuries of torture. And despite being her only friend, Xanu still almost turns his back on Gothi for the sake of revenge.
Gothi: You have to move on. And I know, it'll be the hardest thing you will ever do in your life, but-
Xanu: Then how!? How can I possibly do that!?
Gothi: Forgiveness. [Xanu appears shocked] True forgiveness. As I have.
    Xanu: ...I can't. I can't! I'm so angry. [tears welling up] I'm so angry!
Gothi: [hugs Xanu] I know! And I'm sorry. So, so sorry.
  • Sips' second death. It's one thing that he dies thanks to circumstances no one could've anticipated, but Xanu makes a sobering point that this time is worse because the curse has consumed him. Meaning that, even if they could revive him with spell, it would only bring back the same, crazed crocodile monster he's become. Sips as we know it is dead, full stop...
  • When Sips is in the Afterlife Antechamber, he talks about how much self-loathing he had and how everything he did was to protect his friends, who he felt he wasn't good enough for. Elowen the Foreclaimer elder's wisdom is simple but heart-wrenching:
"When we don't love ourselves, it's the people around us who do, until we can do it ourselves."
  • The sobered look on Sip's face when Elowen warns that if he dies again, he won't get another chance. One more attempt to resurrect him could shatter his soul. He can only sadly point out he's not exactly lucky enough to stay alive.
    • Erina sadly remarking on how she hasn't acted like a Magical Girl. Magical Girls are supposed to be about love, friendship and hope. No doubt she's looking back on her actions contrary to those values, like her taking down Bou Claire in vengeance, her general selfishness towards her friends, and her insecure nature.
    • Xanu learning that for the thousand years he was shattered, his powers and physical capabilities greatly diminished. It's played up like an athelete or a war veteran whose muscles atrophied while they were healing up for so long from a debilitating injury.
  • Episode 33's underlying subplot is Sips trying to atone for what he previously said in Episode 28. The elephant is clearly in the room: even though Sips is now in a (relatively) better place emotionally and physically, it doesn't absolve that he still said hurtful things to Gothi and needs to apologize. Yet somehow, circumstances keep him from getting it off his chest.
