Recap / SPY×FAMILY - Anime: S03 E01

Go To

After Yor, as the Thorn Princess, takes out the Red Circus terrorists, a wounded member of the gang manages to shoot her before he dies, and Yor goes home in pain from taking a bullet in the butt. Loid interprets Yor's anguished facial expression as her being mad at him and takes her on a date to make her feel better, and orders Frankie to babysit Anya again. Since Yor can't let Loid know she's an assassin, she decides to not seek medical attention and ride out the pain, making Loid think that she's not having fun on their date. Meanwhile, Anya talks Franky into tailing Loid and Yor on their date, but when they get to the restaurant where the date is taking place, the concierge tells Frankie and Anya they can't go in due to Frankie being underdressed, and Anya being under 18.
As Frankie takes Anya home she reads the mind of a waiter, who was the sole survivor of the Red Circus massacre, and he pledges revenge against the Thorn Princess. After serving Yor a blowfish poison-laced cocktail that fails to kill her, the waiter decides to make a bomb powerful enough to kill her, and himself if needed be, but Anya sneaks into the restaurant and sabotages the waiter's plan, and he decides to call it quits on being a terrorist. After dinner, Loid and Yor take a walk, and she smiles as she thanks him for the lovely time she had, while Franky and Anya jump out of their hiding spot. The following morning, the poison/painkiller wore off making Yor feel pain again, and Loid concludes that he doesn't understand women, assuming that Yor is mad at him again.

Tropes that appear in this episode:

  • Acquired Poison Immunity: Being a trained assassin, the blowfish poison in the cocktail that Yor drinks acts as a painkiller instead of killing her (the show's producers added a warning telling the viewers to not use poisons as painkillers).
  • Action Prologue: The first scene of the new season kicks off with Yor killing (almost) all members of the Red Circus.
  • Air-Vent Passageway: The duct system at the restaurant is large enough for Anya and Frankie to crawl across.
  • All for Nothing: Even after Yor declares that she had a wonderful time throughout the date which places Loid at ease, the next morning shows her in a terrible mood since the poison that was used to soothe the pain has gone away.
  • And Some Other Stuff: After the blowfish poison-laced cocktail doesn't kill Yor, the vengeful waiter decides to make a homemade bomb using items available in the kitchen and supply closet. As he's, mentally, making a list, the ingredients he needs are bleeped out (to ensure the audience doesn't try it themselves). However, Anya is able to read his mind, and makes her own, non-lethal, peanut bomb.
  • Berate and Switch: When Anya tells Frankie that she wants to spy on her parents, the latter gives her a Disapproving Look only to switch moods and tell her that it's a great idea.
  • Bucket Booby-Trap: When the waiter opens the door to the storage room, a heavy basket comes down on his head which Anya attached to the doorhandle with a string.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Anya wholeheartedly believes that Yor is invincible after hearing how she was shot but still alive.
  • Crazy-Prepared: To ensure that his wife is in a great mood, Loid came up with 862 date ideas to act out. But after Yor requests that they go on a walking date instead, the number drops to 68.
  • Date Peepers: Worried that her parents' marriage will be in danger, Anya convinces Frankie to let her spy on them throughout their date. He agrees so he can see his friend's dating charisma in action.
  • Don't Try This at Home:
    • After the fugu cocktail fails to kill the Thorn Princess, the narrator reminds the audience not to try drinking blowfish poison.
    • When the waiter decides to make a bomb that would likely kill the Thorn Princes and likely himself, and some of the restaurant's patrons, the ingredients he lists in his mind are bleeped out.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Yor assumed that she successfully killed off all the Red Circus agents. Because she didn't double-check their corpses, one of them managed to survive the slaughter, shoot her in the butt, and run away from the scene.
  • Failure Montage: Loid takes his wife to multiple places for their date but Yor is unable to enjoy herself because of her pain.
  • Gratuitous Japanese: In the vengeful waiter's imagine spots of the stuff in the storage room that he can make a bomb with, we see a layout of the storage room with several things pointed with the word "are"—or "that" in Japanese.
  • Honor Before Reason: The waiter decides that avenging his slain comrades is worth killing himself; he also doesn't mind leaving his girlfriend to be stricken with grief.
  • Imagine Spot: After hearing how one of the waiters wants revenge on Yor, Anya imagines him trying to attack only to have his butt handed to him by the World's Strongest Assassin. But this in turn would expose her true identity to Loid who would demand a divorce followed by getting rid of Anya.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: After Anya's, non-lethal, peanut bomb blows up in the waiter's face, she warns him to Leave the Thorn Princess alone. The waiter concludes that the Thorn Princess has a squad of child assassins guarding her, and decides to give up being a terrorist and live a normal life with his girlfriend instead.
  • Last Breath Bullet: Heavily Downplayed. A mortally wounded Red Circus member attempts to shoot at Yor, but she's just Shot in the Ass and without permanent injuries.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Anya, a four-year-old kid who sucks at all things academic, was able to create a powerful (non-lethal) peanut bomb in only a few seconds - she read the ingredients off the waiter's mind - along with an elaborate Home Alone style trap for the waiter to fall prey to.
  • Newspaper-Thin Disguise: When Anya and Frankie tail Yor and Loid, at one point they hide their faces behind flyers with cutouts for their eyes.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: The waiter pours out the poison from a fugu fish into a glass and has Yor drink it. Not only does the drink not kill her because of Yor's Acquired Poison Immunity but it actually neutralizes the pain from her butt which allows her to enjoy her date.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Anya initially worries that her mom could die after hearing how she was shot in the butt.
    • She gets another one when she hears about a bad guy who wants to kill her mom in the restaurant.
  • "Psycho" Strings: The strings play when we see the aftermath of the opening shootout with the baddies lying dead on the floor.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons:
    • Loid is right that there is something wrong with Yor and concludes that she's mad at him, judging by the facial expressions she makes. However, the reason she's miserable is that she's in incredible pain from being shot in the butt, and doesn't want to seek medical help, as it could expose her secret identity as an assassin to Loid.
    • After Anya insists that she and Frankie sneak into the restaurant to spy on her parents, Frankie assumes that she's worried about them getting a divorce. While Anya did think of that possibility in her Imagine Spot, he didn't know about the initial steps involving the vengeful waiter or Yor blowing her cover.
  • Rule of Cool: We don't know how Anya managed to change into a Spy Catsuit when she reveals herself to the waiter in the storeroom but we don't care because it makes for a cool scene.
  • Shot in the Ass: Yor takes a bullet in the butt from a mortally wounded Red Circus member, and the pain makes her miserable the following day.
  • Slippery Skid: The waiter slips and slides over the floor covered in olive oil.
  • Sole Survivor: A waiter working at the restaurant Loid takes Yor on their date was the only surviving member of the Red Circus gang due to him hiding when Yor killed the others.
  • So Much for Stealth: At the end of the date, Anya blows hers and Frankie's covers by openly asking her dad to take her to the nearby amusement park. Though Loid already knew about them since the beginning.
  • Taking You with Me: After the blowfish poison cocktail fails to kill Yor, the waiter decides to make a bomb powerful enough to kill her, him, and part of the restaurant.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: The waiter tries to kill Yor with blowfish poison he puts in her drink. The attempt fails because of her Acquired Poison Immunity.
  • Unsportsmanlike Gloating: As Frankie and Anya tail Loid and Yor, Frankie takes pleasure in seeing ladies' man Loidnote  failing at his attempts at making Yor enjoy herself on their date. When Anya calls Frankie out for this, he says that as a guy who can't even land a single date, it's his just reward to see a man as attractive and charismatic as Loid being unable to satisfy a woman.
