What does he have? A girl worth fighting for.

“What?! Really? We interrupt this narration to inform you that Rei's grandpa has turned into a full blown monster! Wait. Does that mean Rei will become a monster too?! To those fiends who turn my dear friend Rei and her kind grandpa into monsters, I say this! In the Name of the Moon, I'll punish you!”
Usagi Tsukino

(DiC Episode: "Grandpa's Follies")

Grandpa Hino begins to act erratically after surviving a deadly encounter with Zoisite. This leaves Rei exasperated over having to deal with not only her granola bar grandfather and Usagi's insensitivity but also a wandering riff-raff who has the hots for her.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Accent Adaptation: Yuichirou is given a Californian accent in the DiC Dub.
  • Accidental Pervert: Yuichirou barges into Rei's room to warn her about a monster, but to his delight, he ends up catching her while she's in the nude.
  • All Just a Dream: Rei manages to convince Yuuichirou that he was only dreaming about a monster attacking the shrine.
  • Beak Attack: Phobos and Deimos use this to attack Zoisite.
  • The Chase: The episode ends with Rei chasing after Usagi for insisting that she and Yuuichirou will become an item while her grandfather chases after Yuuichirou with a broom believing that he isn't worthy of his granddaughter.
  • Crocodile Tears: Grandpa does this in front of Rei to lure Yuuichirou into a water dumping prank.
  • Declaration of Protection: Yuichirou proudly admits that he would give up his life if it meant protecting Rei.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • Yuichirou is named "Chad" in the DiC dub.
    • The Youma "Jiji" is named "Pox".
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Rei is not amused with her grandpa pulling tricks on his apprentice.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: Yuuichirou's eyes are covered by his shaggy bangs. Though it's downplayed as we do see his eyes more than once.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: The fact that Zoisite appears in the first few minutes to take Grandpa Hino's Rainbow Crystal means that he's destined to fail even though all the odds are in his favor.
  • Fighting Your Family: Rei learns that the youma is actually her grandfather who mindlessly tries to attack her.
  • Food as Bribe: Usagi tries to win back Rei's friendship by offering her some of her daifuku candy. The resolution has her, Rei, her grandpa and Yuuichirou eating daifuku together in peace. The DiC dub changes them from daifuku to chocolate cupcakes.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Luna needed to remind Rei that she could use one of her paper talismans to neutralize her youma-turned grandfather.
  • Fortune Teller: Usagi uses the Disguise Pen to turn into a fortune teller in order to motivate Rei and Yuuichirou into getting together. It doesn't work because Rei is in a relationship with Mamoru and she can see through Usagi's ruse.
  • Heroic Willpower: Grandpa Hino manages to resist having his Rainbow Crystal stolen the first time Zoisite attacks him.
  • Hidden Depths: Yuuichirou provides some meaningful words of wisdom involving how a person's personality can change for better or worse based on the seasons.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Rei tries to reach out to her grandfather hoping he can break free from Jiji's control. It doesn't work for her.
  • Love at First Sight: Cupid must have shot an arsenal of arrows at Yuuichirou as he's instantly enamored the moment he sees Rei.
  • An Odd Place to Sleep: Yuuichirou's first scene features him sleeping on the steps of the Hikawa Shrine.
  • Oni: Grandpa's youma form, Jiji, bears a strong resemblance to the oni ogres.
  • Shipper on Deck: Usagi notices Rei and Yuuichirou having a moment and decides to push them together.
  • Smooch of Victory: Rei gives a small peck to Yuuichirou for his kind heart and noble actions.
  • Super-Scream: Jiji can emit a super sonic scream as his primary attack.
  • Surfer Dude: Yuichiro (Or Chad) speaks with a stereotypical surfer's accent in the DIC version.
  • Training from Hell: Grandpa Hino subjects Yuuichirou to this by making him swing across giant trees.
  • Use Your Head: Yuuichirou does this to attack Jiji. It results in him being knocked out.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Finally having had enough of Usagi's ridiculous antics, Rei decides to end her friendship with her. Though they do patch things up in the end.
  • With Friends Like These...: Despite being perfectly fine with the girls leaving her, Rei admits to being hurt that her friends aren't taking her problems seriously (Usagi) or bail on her rather then try to understand her perspective (Ami and Makoto).
