Recap / Monsters at Work S1E3 "The Damaged Room"

Go To

Phlegm accidentally damages a human toddler's room, so Tylor must work with MIFT to repair the damages while Mike and Sulley take care of "Snore".

Tropes in this episode:

  • Actor Allusion: Mike being a Monstropolis Creepees fan is a reference to Billy Crystal being a lifelong Yankees fan.
  • Adam Westing: Baseball announcer Bob Uecker appears as Bob Yucker.
  • Asshole Victim: The fan of the opposing baseball team wasn't the nicest of monsters to begin with, so him getting a good knockout via three baseballs while giving Mike the chance to get back at him for insulting Snore allies as this trope.
  • Babysitting Episode: Mike and Sulley have to babysit Snore while MIFT repairs her damaged room.
  • Baseball Episode: Mike and Sulley's plot has them attending a baseball game, with Mike bringing Snore with them.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Turns out the reason Val is so obsessed with her “BFF” Tylor is because when she was at MU, no one really noticed her at all until one day in class when Tylor asked her “Is this seat taken?”. Telling Tylor this actually gets him to remember her and her response “You picked the best seat in the house” a bit because she shared his favorite candy with him.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: Mike wasn't expecting Snore to pass the rotdog he fed her so quickly, claiming that he himself hasn’t passed something he ate seven months ago.
    Mike: These humans are weird.
  • Cacophony Cover Up: While repairing the baby’s room, Tylor and Cutter have to time the sound of the thunder to mask their work noises so the parents don’t hear them.
  • Call-Back: Quite a lot.
    • Mike mentions Boo to Sulley. In particular, he reminds him of the Harryhausen's incident:
Mike: (imitating Sulley) "Ooklay in the agbay."
    • When Sulley learns that Mike named the infant "Snore", he reminds Mike "once you name it, you start getting attached to it".
    • Just like Boo before her, Snore is named after an onomatopoeia.
    • Mike dresses Snore up as a monster when taking her to the baseball game.
    • Sulley tells Mike to "Put the thing back where it came from."
    • Val, and later Tylor, open and close the closet door repeatedly while they are stuck in Snore's room in a similar way to how Sulley did when he and Mike were stuck in the Himalayas and in the camp cabin in the previous films.
    • Phlegm's Jokester performance is his failed Scare Simulator demonstration, except this time he suffers an additional Groin Attack.
    • The skateboard Phlegm uses as part of his performance bears the logo of Oozma Kappa on its underside.
    • Mike covers up a line by saying he is rehearsing a play that he is putting together. Who he says it to this time doesn't buy it.
    • Mike's autographed picture of him with the Creepees player has Mike's face covered by the team's logo, continuing the running gag of Mike's face being hidden or cut in photos and commercials.
    • Mike at one point mentions to Sulley that nothing is more important than their friendship, reminding him of a favor he did for him (saving him from Randall).
    • Mike's love of baseball was alluded to when he and Sully got rid of Randall for good at the end of the first film, with Sully tossing Randall through the door being played out like he was a pitcher and Mike the catcher, with Mike offering Baseball-esque commentary throughout.
  • The Cameo: Another minor character from Monsters University makes an appearance. This time Roy "Big Red" O'Growlahan, the head of Jaws Theta Chi appears as one of the baseball commentators.
  • Comically Missing the Point: At the end of the 'Mike's Comedy Class' segment, when Mike accidentally sits on a whoopee cushion while reading the instruction manual for it, one of his students accuses him of killing said cushion.
  • Company Cross References: The second Lilo & Stitch reference in the show; Snore has a plush toy of Angel (Experiment 624) in her bedroom. (Executive producer Bobs Gannaway also previously executive produced the show Angel debuted in.)
  • The Ditherer: Played for Laughs when Sulley asks Mike how he can help after the latter returns from changing Snore. Mike requests he cook and do the dishes for dinner, but Sulley quickly suggests they order out for dinner instead to save him the work. This sparks an argument over home cooked meals versus takeout meals.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Closer to a listen check but the parents of Snore don't realize that Duncan is disguised as their daughter despite him sounding nothing like a baby should.
  • Heroic BSoD: Val has this when Tylor demanded to know why her constant attempts to remind him of their supposed time together in MU is so important to her.
  • History Repeats: Once again, Mike and Sulley find themselves trying to watch over a human girl who ends up in the monster world, one of them naming it after an onomatopoeia, said human girl being disguised by a homemade costume, and Mike being more attached to it than he pretends. At least this time, things go a lot more smoothly, and it doesn't lead to a secret conspiracy to kidnap human kids being exposed. And the girl in question is a year-old baby instead of a 3-year old toddler.
  • In the Style of: The Monsters, Inc. theme in the end credits is played with a baseball organ.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: Played With. When Sulley calls out Mike on naming Snore despite Mike being against Sulley naming Boo in the movie, Mike justifies himself by claiming it helps him distinguish between the infant and the objects in the room.
Mike: I just can't call it "thing". For example, if somebody came in and said "Hey, Mike, can I borrow that thing?" How would I know what they're talking about; Snore or a stapler? It's completely different.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: The opposing baseball fan is certainly an asshole to Mike, but he's not wrong to point out that bringing a sleeping baby to a baseball game isn't a very good idea. He also doesn’t really cross any lines, just being an obnoxious fan, until the end when he directly insults Mike’s “child”.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Mike and Sulley bickering over Snore at the game has shades of this.
  • Missing the Good Stuff: Mike misses a big play by the Creepees twice; once when he had to change Snore's diaper, another when he's facing the obnoxious fan (who then gets knocked out by the balls).
  • Pig Latin: Mike imitates Sully's "Ooklay in the agbay" when recalling what happened with Boo. MIFT doesn't understand the context, and Tylor asks Val if Mike is speaking French.
  • Sneeze of Doom: Phlegm kickstarts the plot by sneezing inside a child's room, creating a hole in the wall with his corrosive snot.
  • Toilet Humor: Early in the episode Mike feeds Snore a rotdog, which passes through her system rather quickly and he has to change her pants. Later, Val Little claims she finds candy under Duncan's pet's cage to Tylor's disgust.
  • Whoopee Cushion: Mike, in his comedy gig in this episode, is trying to teach his class how a whoopee cushion operates. But Mike is unable to understand how a whoopie cushion operates, as he is expected it to deflate on command. And when he eventually sat on it per the instructions, a member of the class thinks that he killed it.
  • Working Through the Cold: Phlegm has a cold but showed up for work in spite of this, but because his snot burned a hole in the baby’s room, he had to go home.
