Tylor Tuskmon is a recent Scare Major graduate of Monsters University, ready to start his new career at Monsters, Inc. as a Scarer. However, he is dismayed to find that the company has now switched to laugh power. Now having to work as a mechanic for the Monsters, Inc. Facilities Team (MIFT), he is determined to learn comedy to become a Jokester, but grows to appreciate his new friends at MIFT over time. Meanwhile, Mike and Sulley, now the new leaders of Monsters, Inc., do their best to keep the company's lights on and prove that laugh power is the way of the future.

Nine months after former CEO Waternoose's arrest, Monsters, Inc. is now thriving with laugh power. But traditionalist monsters in Monstropolis are displeased with the company's switch and mock the company for dropping scare power, leading Mike and Sulley to try to turn the bad press around. Meanwhile, after having worked as a Jokester for a few months, Tylor is now struggling to get kids laughing as his routine grows stale and he's unable to come up with new material. Thus, he considers switching employers to rival company Fear Co., run by MU alumnus Johnny Worthington III, to do what he does best: scare children.
