Recap / Monsters at Work S2E10 "Powerless"

Go To

Johnny plans to sell the stolen laugh energy with his own scream energy. Knowing what happens when the two kinds of energy mix, Tylor goes back to Monsters, Inc. to get help to stop Johnny.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Situation: While Chet is revealed to have been The Mole for MERC, it's unclear if he had been undercover the entire time he had been working at Fear Co. or if he was already working there and ended up becoming MERC's man on the inside as part of a Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal. While Chet's remark that Johnny should treat his assistants better does suggest the latter scenario to be the case, that could also simply be an observation he made during his time undercover in the former scenario.
  • And This Is for...: Chet delivers the final blow to stop Randall as revenge for him calling him "Chet Wetter" in college.
Chet: That's for all the bed-wetters out there.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Throughout the entire series, Fritz has been shown as a friendly Gentle Giant who wouldn't hurt a fly. While his Frankie Rigatoni persona may be giving him a boost, Fritz nevertheless doesn't hesitate to try laying a beat down on Randall when the latter tries to hurt his fellow MIFTers.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Cutter and Sunny share a kiss after they defeat Randall.
  • Blatant Lies: When Jack's toupee is knocked off his head, he exclaims "My toupee!", and later makes sure to call it his "real hair".
  • Brick Joke: Upon first meeting Chet after college, Randall mocks him for being a bedwetter. When Randall is defeated, Chet says it's for all bedwetters.
  • Broken Pedestal: Tylor has spent the entirety of the season looking up to Johnny and being charmed into working for him. Any respect and admiration he held for him completely plummets when he discovers what Johnny and Randall are plotting, and realizes that they merely used him as a pawn in their plan.
  • Easily Forgiven:
    • Roger forgives Tylor for publicly accusing him of being the saboteur.
    • Ben also forgives Tylor for scaring him in the previous episode.
  • Exact Words: After changing her mind about laugh energy, Jill says she doesn't want to hear "one word about it from Jack". He then says four words. "I. Told. You. So."
  • Extra-Long Episode: This episode's length is 31 minutes long, making it longer than the other previous episodes in the series.
  • For the Evulz: Randall mentions that apart from aiding Johnny's plan to keep Fear Co is business, the sabotage he does to Monsters Inc was also a chance to get revenge on Mike and Sully, as seen when he stole Mike's glove and smashed Sully's framed picture of him and Boo.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Not that they were really evil in the first place, but a few members of Fear Co. join Monsters Inc. as jokesters and seem to enjoy it.
  • History Repeats: Like with Waternoose, Johnny's goal is to protect his family's company from going under; and just like Waternoose, he uses unethical means to go about it, namely discriminating the competition in Monsters Inc and mixing laugh energy into his company's scream energy to meet demandsnote .
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: A major reason to Randall and Johnny's plot being foiled is due to the former's own Scream Extractor, having been kept in a disassembled state by MIFT, being used against them.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Following his sudden return in the previous episode, the opening scene has Randall explaining what he's been up to after his defeat and subsequent banishment in the first film. While in context he's actually speaking to Tylor, the fact that Randall is looking directly at the camera during this scene can also be read as him explaining this to the viewer themselves.
Randall: Let me tell you a story…
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: After seeing his friends get hurt, the normally carefree Fritz becomes dead serious throughout most of the episode being able to cripple Randall using the Booger Blast soda and even personally handing him over to MERC at the end of the episode. Fritz goes back to his normal self after Cutter tells him to.
  • Lost in Character: Fritz spends most of the episode using his community theater experience to pretend to be tough guy Frankie Rigatoni. He stays in character even after the mission is long over, only snapping out of it when Cutter says "cut!"
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Chet has spent much of the season being ignored and undermined by Johnny, and throughout this episode is frequently bullied and belittled by Randall. In the climax, just when Randall has the upper hand against the MIFT team, Chet electrocutes him unconscious and helps the team to restore the power.
  • The Mole: Roz reveals to Johnny while he's being arrested that Chet had secretly been working for MERC as their man on the inside.
  • Once More, with Clarity: When Randall and Johnny explain their plan to Tylor at the beginning of the episode, a montage of various events from the rest of the season is shown, only now revealing that Randall was hiding in plain sight and sabotaging Monsters, Inc. the whole time.
  • Put on a Prison Bus: After his scheme is exposed, Johnny is arrested and escorted away by Roz and her men, and Fritz also hands a tied up Randall over to their custody as well, though the latter escapes shortly afterwards.
  • Race Against the Clock: Upon learning that Johnny plans to combine the laugh energy stolen from Monsters Inc with his own scream energy and knowing first hand how volatile that mixture is, Tylor and his friends must hurry to stop him or else a majority of the city would be destroyed.
  • Secret Message Wink: Roz winks after giving Mike and Sulley paperwork to indicate that she's really giving them an excuse to stall for time. Mike is confused at first.
Mike: Is she torturing me, or giving a disturbing romantic overture? Oh, please be torture, please be torture...
  • See the Invisible: In order to see Randall during the MIFT team's fight with him, Fritz blasts him with a can of Booger Blast soda.
  • Self-Serving Memory: During his Motive Rant to Tylor, Randall recalls that he and Johnny were "best friends" in college as members of the ROR fraternity. Anyone who's seen Monsters University would know that Johnny only let Randall into the fraternity because he thought he could be useful - the exact same reason why he has hired him for this current job - and didn't hesitate at all to kick him out after he was shown up by Sulley at the Scare Games.
  • Sequel Hook: Following his arrest, a news report near the end of the episode reveals that Randall somehow escaped custody and is now on the run.
  • Soda Can Shakeup: Weaponized by Fritz who douses an invisible Randall with a can of Booger Blast flavored cola.
  • Stalling For Time:
    • Because the Scream Extractor won't be able to suck out all the scream energy before 9:00 PM, Tylor and Val have to keep Johnny from turning on the power at the appointed time.
    • Roz secretly gives Mike and Sulley extra paperwork to stall them, as she knows about Johnny's real plan.
  • Totem Pole Trench: Tylor and Val stack each other under a trench coat while infiltrating Fear Co.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Tylor discovers that Johnny and Randall had been using him as a patsy in their plan to discredit Monsters Inc, which included making him The Scapegoat for Randall's sabotage.
