Recap / Monsters at Work S2E9 "Descent into Fear"

Go To

Tylor becomes a scarer at Fear Co.

Tropes:

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: Tylor's scare card calls him Tylor "The Terrible" Tuskmon.
  • The Bus Came Back: Randall returns after having been banished by Mike and Sully in the first movie.
  • Call-Back: Tylor's devastated reaction after he scares Ben parallels how Sulley reacted after scaring Boo in the original film, and directly ties back to how Sulley himself had previously described this event to Tylor in the first season finale.
Sulley: The fear in her eyes when she was scared, I... I didn't like what I saw. What I saw in me.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: After spending most of the season having seemingly matured and mellowed out, this episode reveals that Johnny has actually been conspiring against Monsters, Inc. all along, and has enlisted Randall to sabotage and steal laugh energy from them to try and put them out of business.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Co-Worker in this case. Joy isn't well liked by the other employees of Fear-Co, and they all cheer Tylor on in order to take her off the top.
  • Heroic BSoD: Tylor gets one when he scares Ben, having a panic attack after he realizing what he's just done.
  • Hidden Villain: The episode reveals that Johnny was secretly orchestrating Monsters, Inc's setbacks and manipulating Tylor the whole time, with the help of a harboured fugitive, Randall Boggs.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After he scares Ben and makes him cry, Tylor is affected deeply not unlike Sulley himself from the first film.
  • The Reveal: The real saboteur is revealed to be Randall Boggs.
  • Shadow Archetype: This episode presents Fear Co. as the polar opposite of Monsters Inc. in terms of workplace culture. While everyone at M.I. is friendly with each other, Fear Co. scarers are put in constant competition against each other. The scare floor is a dark, windowless room, unlike the well-lit laugh floor at Monsters Inc. Everything is strictly business, with employees not fraternizing with each other, and they only get 15 minutes for lunch.
  • Wham Episode: After leaving Monsters, Inc. to become a Scarer at Fear Co. in the previous episode, Tylor has seemingly ruined his friendship with Ben, has finally become completely disillusioned with scaring as a result, and learns in the ending that Johnny and Randall have been manipulating him and sabotaging his friends at Monsters, Inc. all along.
  • Wham Shot: In the final scene, Johnny leads Tylor into his private office to introduce him to a hidden associate, and the episode ends with the reveal that his associate is none other than Randall.
