Recap / Monsters at Work S2E4 "Opening Doors"

Go To

Tylor pays a quick visit to Fear Co in order to return Johnny's Scare Card. Meanwhile, Val attempts to cover for Tylor, and Fritz and the rest of MIFT look for leaks in the equipment.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • The Bus Came Back: Rosie Levin, the former head of Eta Hiss Hiss from Monsters University, is shown to have taken up a job at Fear Co. in between seasons, having found scaring better suited for her liking.
  • Foil: Fear Co. is the sharp opposite of Monsters, Inc., being a massive, futuristic office building with state-of-the-art facilities and a more highly secretive scare floor. In contrast, MI is still old-fashioned looking, is somewhat smaller on the inside, and the laugh floor is more open for everyone to see. For further contrast, Fear Co. still employs the leaderboard system, whereas MI did away with it.
  • Got Me Doing It: Fritz and Roger spend the time singing a song about looking for "cheeky leaky leaks" while inspecting the canisters. Duncan finds himself singing as well, despite finding it annoying.
  • Hidden Depths: Val discovers she's very good at making kids laugh and fills a laugh canister in one shot. Mike takes notice and is so impressed, he suggests Val consider becoming a jokester.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • When Tylor and Val practice how to politely turn down Johnny's job offer, she says Johnny might insist on demanding a reason since some people are very clingy, even though she is the clingy one towards Tylor.
    • Chet is quick to call Tylor as desparate for attention after he leaves, even though Chet's the one who wants Johnny's attention. Clearly those college years haven't done his worship complex any favors.
  • Identical Stranger: Duncan has one at Fear Co called Declan, who's literally his opposite in every way (being a humble Assistant Scare Floor Supervisor who works to make his father proud instead of being a narcissistic assistant to the head of MIFT that's a Momma's Boy.) Tylor initially mistakes him for Duncan until he sees the facial hair.
  • I Gave My Word: Although he's very tempted to accept Johnny's offer, Tylor promised Val he would turn it down and follows through with it.
  • Ironic Name: Fear Co's top scarer is someone named Joy.
  • Must Have Caffeine: Mike requires coffee during his shift, and is quite incensed that they ran out of sugar.
  • "No. Just… No" Reaction: Mike has no words when Roze claims she's too pretty-looking to eat sugar.
  • Sudden Downer Ending: Tylor turns down Johnny's offer and Val discovers she has a hidden talent for making kids laugh. But as Duncan continues to search for any possible leaks, he spots Tylor's coffee order in the trash can, and suspects that he's the leaker. And since Duncan hates Tylor's guts with a passion, there's no doubt he's eager to throw his coworker under the bus for corporate sabotage, as he gleefully grins now that he has "evidence".
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Tylor gets back from Fear Co. and sees that Val filled his canister. Celia assumes Tylor stepped up his game, so he and Val just go along with it.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: Johnny is just as loved by his staff at Fear Co. as Mike and Sulley are at Monsters, Inc., knowing each staffer's name, treating his employees well, and celebrating their accomplishments with pride.
  • The Unreveal: The audience (and Tylor) never get to see what Fear Co.'s scare floor looks like.
