Recap / Monsters at Work S1E9 "Bad Hair Day"

Go To

Having ditched his new dream of becoming a comedian, Tylor must now try to find the hair of a deceased MIFT employee after accidentally losing it.

Tropes:

  • Abandoned Area: Shredder Shaft B was canned when David died in there. It still has everything intact, but is covered in dust, so it indicates the accident was not horribly long ago.
  • All for Nothing: Played for Laughs, but Tylor learns he didn't have to risk life and limb to get a piece of David's hair from the old shredder shaft because they keep an entire bag of his hair under the stairs.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: Apparently, monsters have several means of excrement that aren’t #1 and #2. Fritz mentions the modes are #3, #4, #5 and #6.
  • Call-Back:
    • The entire episode is one to Cutter's description of David's death in the pilot, mentioning how he perished in the shredder shaft.
    • George, when talking about David's hair, mentions he used to have hair. Don't worry buddy, you'll get it back.
  • Determinator: With his dreams of being a Jokester seemingly crushed by Ms. Flint rejecting him for the program, Tylor goes out of his way to prove himself a reliable member of MIFT, even to the point he almost gets himself killed in the process.
  • Foreshadowing: Duncan describes in gruesome detail about what happens to doors when they get sent to the shredder shaft. Poor Tylor (save for the shredded part) goes through the entire process himself when he enters the shaft.
  • He's Just Hiding: In-Universe, Val thinks David is really still alive. Duncan has accepted otherwise.
  • Ice-Cream Koan: Played with. Most of David's sage advice given to Tylor are general knowledge, parking signs, and a nursery rhyme about "Boogie Bear".
  • Improv Comedy Is Inane: The subject of Mike’s Comedy Class this episode. Mike claims to be an expert, but all his improvisations are of him pretending to be a ball. He’s completely stumped when his students suggest cubes.
  • In the Style of: The Monsters, Inc. theme in the credits is performed by a choir. Humorously, this version specifically espouses about David and his hair.
  • Jerkass Ball: The events of the episode only get kicked off because Roto (Duncan's therapy pet) ate David's hair. He only spits it out when everyone realizes that the hair isn't David's, and his smug expression immediately after confirms that he could have done that at any time; he just wanted to put Tylor on the spot For the Lulz.
  • Near-Death Experience: Tylor, in a desperate attempt to replace David's hair after Roto eats it, almost gets killed in the same shredder shaft where David met his end. He's fortunately saved by his hat, but he apparently experiences a vision of the afterlife, where he meets David for the first time.
  • Out of Focus: This is the only season one episode without a Mike and Sulley plot. Mike only appears in the comedy class segment, while Sulley doesn’t appear at all.
  • The Pearly Gates: When Tylor has his Near-Death Experience, he briefly goes to the Pearly Gates, where he meets David. They’re depicted in the episode as a more heavenly version of a scare door.
  • Remember the Dead: The entire episode shows M.I. has dedicated an entire day to David's memory, as he was that beloved amongst their staff. Monsters go to the factory's salon to not get their hair cut, since David never cut his, MIFT eats where David used to for their lunch break, and they hold a vigil for him in the afternoon.
  • Shout-Out: Part of the soundtrack from Soul is used for the scene where Tylor sees a vision of the late David.
  • Toilet Humor: Tylor pretends he's having a bad stomach from eating barfallo wings. Fritz thinks he has to take a number 3, then a number 4, before it goes up to five. And David reveals eating them will cause a monster to have a number 6.
  • Workaholic: This is how the other MIFTers describe David, Cutter even saying that he once did 368 hours straight in a week without taking a break. Tylor points out how there aren’t that many hours in a week and the others excuse it by saying it was a Leap Week.
  • You Do Not Want To Know: Roze says this almost word-for-word when she gives Tylor a bit of her hair, as he points out her hair doesn't look like it's been cut and questions where the lock came from.
  • You Remind Me Of Myself: Roze gives Tylor a piece of her hair by saying that he reminds of herself.

Cutter: Davey! Whoo! Davey, Davey, Davey! Dave-aliciousssss!
