Recap / Haven S 4 E 3 Bad Blood

Go To

A worker goes into the sewers to fix a junction box. He gets scared when he steps on a dead rat, but finds the box and works on it. Something stalks him in the darkness, seeing in infrared. It lunges and the man screams.

Dwight calls Vince and Dave to his office. He tells them a morgue in New Hampshire has reported they found a body that matches Audrey's description. He needs them to go there and confirm it. He warns that if it is Audrey, they need to keep it secret or else The Guard will kill Nathan now that he is useless. Vince warns that even though he is The Guard's leader, he won't be able to stop them. Dwight says if it is Audrey, then bring her home.

At the bar, Lexie threatens William with the gun and demands to know who she really is. She wonders if she is an amnesiac secret agent and that is why she can handle the gun with so much skill. William sighs and says she is not ready. Irritated, she tells him to get out until he decides to stop speaking in riddles and he leaves. Rhonda walks up and asks what that was about. Lexie puts the gun away and says she'll explain later. She looks up and is shocked to see William back in his seat, as though he never left.

As Vince and Dave leave the police station, Nathan is at his desk calling Duke and asking him to find what else Jennifer knows about The Barn now that she is off her meds. Duke sees Jennifer helping clean up The Grey Gull and says it may take time. Dwight tells Nathan they have a case. As they walk out, the janitor shoves Nathan as they pass each other. The janitor reveals his circular maze tattoo and Nathan sees he's one of many who hate Nathan for stopping The Troubles from ending. Dwight and Nathan continue and see the sewer worker's corpse, which has been completely drained of blood. The body has no puncture wounds and there is no blood anywhere in the area. Dwight gets a call about another victim.

Jennifer has apparently gotten a job at The Grey Gull, as she cuts up lemons and oranges. Duke asks her what she has heard from The Barn recently. She says she remembers hearing Duke call out for Audrey, as if he never wanted to let her go. He admits that Audrey is really special to him. She makes him a drink and thanks him for letting her stay in Audrey's old room. She yawns and explains that Wade's excessive drunken partying has been keeping her up. She accidentally cuts her finger and Duke recoils to stop the blood from getting on him. She asks what is wrong, but he avoids the question and gets her a bandage.

Dwight and Nathan find a second blood-drained body next to an open manhole cover. Jordan is watching them from her truck, to make sure Nathan doesn't die before Audrey kills him. Dwight figures the killer is in the sewers. He asks Nathan how he can be sure that Audrey will kill him when she wouldn't do it the last time. Nathan says this time, he knows it is necessary.

Duke gets Wade something for his hangover. Wade says they should keep The Grey Gull open 24/7. When Duke objects, Wade points out that he kept the place afloat for six months and he has a vested interest in running the place. Duke tries to convince him to return to New York and reclaim his old life. Wade talks about how their father liked Duke best, but he is willing to look past that and be partners with his brother. Duke says if Wade knew what their father was really like, then he wouldn't want anything to do with him. Wade suspects that Duke is pushing him away because he's involved in some crime, but Duke says he just prefers to work alone.

Dwight has Haven PD stationed at each manhole cover. Meanwhile, a woman is taking a shower. Suddenly, blood drips from the shower head and she screams.

Nathan and Dwight get a report and find the woman dead and drained of blood. Dwight shines a UV light around the place, but doesn't find any blood residue. The two check the house trying to find how the killer escaped. Dwight finds Jordan outside and asks her to stop interfering in police business. They look up to find a massive puddle of blood. The blood flows into a storm drain and down the sewer, leaving no residue behind.

Meanwhile, Vince and Dave's car overheats and they have to stop to pour coolant into the radiator. Vince expresses his hate for Nathan for stopping The Troubles from ending and potentially killing Audrey. Dave remarks that they all loved Audrey, but Nathan is their ally and they should look after him in honor of their old friend Garland Wuornos. Vince says if the woman in the morgue is Audrey, then he will never forgive Nathan.

Lexie asks William how he got back in without her seeing him. He says this place is not real. She grabs him by the scruff of the neck and demands to know what he means, but he stays silent. She lets go and walks away.

Jennifer takes a nap in Audrey's room. She hears music and laughter and figures Wade is throwing yet another drunken party. However, when she goes downstairs, The Grey Gull is empty except for Duke. Jennifer worries that she really is going crazy.

Dwight and Jordan tell Nathan what they saw and note that the blood puddle's size would account for the three victims' drained blood. They go over a map and find that the three attacks were in a straight line. They figure the blood originated in a forested area of Haven, and Jordan says Mike Gallagher and his wife moved there after their original house was destroyed by the meteor storm. Nathan realizes Mike was the janitor who shoved him earlier, and remembers he had a bandage on his hand.

Incensed, Lexie insists that they are in the real world. She bangs on things to prove they are solid, and takes a shot of Tequila to prove it is the real stuff. She tells Rhonda she is going home early and walks out the door... then finds herself back inside. Rhonda bids her good morning and believes that Lexie left and came back the next morning... even though only seconds have passed for Lexie.

Dwight, Jordan, and Nathan arrive at Mike's house. Jordan says Mike had been a respected member of The Guard, but had never told anyone what his Trouble was. Mike greets Jordan, but refuses to talk to them due to Nathan's presence. Nathan notices some dead lilies in a vase and realizes that Mike's wife Charlotte is dead. Jordan offers condolences and Mike explains that Charlotte contracted cancer and lost the will to live due to the stress of dealing with the Troubles. Nathan asks him if his Trouble is blood-related and explains about the recent deaths. Mike refuses to believe he caused the deaths and roars that everything is Nathan's fault. He tries to charge at Nathan, but he accidentally grabs Jordan's arm and gets knocked out by her touch-of-pain Trouble. Dwight is called about another murder. They trace the blood's path and realize it is headed for Haven PD.

Duke and Jennifer go to the police station hoping to talk to Nathan, but find the building is almost empty because almost all the officers are patrolling the sewers. Jennifer points out that since The Barn was destroyed, she can't possibly be hearing new voices from it and figures she's gone insane.

The blood mass flows into the building and oozes up an officer's pants. The man screams. Duke and Jennifer run up to find the blood leaving the officer's drained corpse. The pair run into Nathan's office and cover the space between the door and the floor with a jacket. Duke tries to call Nathan but gets his voice mail. The blood flows in from the ceiling and collects on the chandelier. Jennifer starts to hear the voices again and clutches her head in pain. The blood starts to drip down. A few drops fall on Duke's hand, but he absorbs it and his eyes turn silver. At this reaction, the blood retreats. Jennifer is spooked by his eyes and he warns her to stay back. She runs out as Nathan and the others arrive with the unconscious Mike. Duke returns to normal and the others realize that Duke's Trouble to absorb Troubled people's blood prevented the blood from killing him. Jordan explains to Jennifer about Duke's Trouble while taunting him about how it is seen as evil.

The lights go out and the blood flows out of the outlets. Nathan realizes the blood is moving towards him. Dwight shoots the blood with a taser, making it split apart, but it quickly reforms. Mike wakes up and Nathan says he figures that the blood is targeting him due to Mike's hatred of him. Mike admits that while he was mourning his wife and blaming Nathan for her death, he accidentally cut himself and a few drops of blood went down the drain. Mike says he doesn't want Nathan dead anymore, but the blood doesn't stop and they realize Mike has no control over it. Jordan removes her gloves and sticks her hands in the puddle. The blood reacts to her pain touch and splits apart, but it reforms again.

At the New Hampshire morgue, a technician says Vince and Dave can see the body now. Vince can barely go through with it, due to his feelings for Sarah Vernon/Lucy Ripley/Audrey Parker. Dave offers to do it alone, but Vince steels himself, reasoning that if Nathan faced this impossible decision before, so can he.

Lexie tries to explain to Rhonda that she just returned to the bar a few seconds after she left it, but Rhonda has no idea what she is talking about. Frustrated, Lexie asks William if she is dead.

Jordan says they have to think of something fast because she can't hold off the blood forever. They wonder if they can get the blood to return to Mike's body, but figure it is too risky. Duke volunteers to use his Trouble on it. Nathan warns that they don't know what that amount of blood will do to him, but Duke sticks his hand in the puddle. His eyes turn silver and he screams as all the blood flows into his hand and disappears. Dwight tries to help him up, but Duke grabs him by the throat with one hand and lifts him up. Nathan grabs Duke's arm and tries to calm him down. Duke snaps out of it as his eyes return to normal and he releases Dwight. As the others check the building to make sure they got all of the blood, Jennifer asks Duke why he didn't tell her about his Trouble. He says he is not proud of it. She comments that it looked so painful when he was absorbing the blood and figures that was why he avoided her cut finger earlier. He clarifies that it doesn't hurt at all. Instead, it feels really good, like a drug addiction. The Crocker Trouble destroyed his father and grandfather. That is why he's trying to get Wade to leave Haven, so he doesn't have to experience it.

The group confirms that all the blood is gone and Dwight leads Mike away. Jordan admits that she had no idea whether or not her touch would affect the blood, and she had been secretly hoping that the blood would kill her, because she can't stand not being able to touch people without hurting them. She tells Nathan to keep his promise to take The Troubles away forever.

Vince and Dave see the body that is covered with a sheet. Vince loses his nerve and asks for the feet to be uncovered first. When they don't see the scar on Audrey's foot, Vince confidently uncovers the face and confirms the body isn't Audrey.

As she goes back to Audrey's room, Jennifer can hear Lexie and William talking. William says she isn't dead but that nothing in the bar is real. Lexie says she believes him and everybody except for Lexie, William, and Rhonda vanishes. Lexie hopes this means Rhonda is real, but William says it is because she hasn't let her go yet. Lexie sadly tells Rhonda she is her best friend then says goodbye. Rhonda vanishes. Lexie asks William what's next and he says that she's next.

Vince and Dave return to Haven. They are filled in and comfort Mike. Mike says his family had warned him not to let his blood get spilled, but he had no idea this would happen. Vince tells Nathan he's learned the price of hatred and offers to bury the hatchet so they can build a new Haven together. Nathan accepts and walks away. Vince and Dave admit that Nathan is their best hope.

At The Grey Gull, Duke and Dwight share a drink and Duke apologizes for losing control and attacking him. Wade overhears them talking about how Duke saved everyone and inquires. Dwight leaves and Duke tells him to drop the matter. Jennifer runs in and says they need to call Nathan. The three meet in Audrey's room and Jennifer explains that she can hear Audrey's voice talking to a man about how she's trapped in a place that isn't real. Duke figures that since time flows differently in the barn, Audrey is still trapped there.

William tells Lexie they are in a place that has many names, but it is best known as The Barn. It is dying, and if they don't get out soon, it will take them with it. The walls, floor, and ceiling start to break, revealing a dark void outside. However, from Lexie's point of view, nothing is happening, and she gets confused at William's nervousness.

  • Absurdly Spacious Sewer: Where the first victim of the week is found.
  • Addictive Magic: Duke reveals to Jennifer that taking on other people's Troubles isn't painful, it feels like a drug high.
  • Afraid of Blood: Duke reacts strongly when Jennifer cuts her finger, although his reaction is at least somewhat justified given Jennifer is Troubled and she doesn't yet know about his Trouble.
  • The Alleged Car: Vince's vintage sedan is temperamental and breaks down on their way to New Hampshire.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: The first victim is found exsanguinated without any puncture wounds. Dwight scoffs that this isn't possible, unless you believe in vampires. Dwight was formerly the Chief's "cleaner" and personally relocated a family of wendigo children last season, but vampires are where he draws the line.
  • Artistic License – Geography: There's no way the trip to New Hampshire from Maine is a "two hour drive," as Vince and Dave put it, given that Haven is supposed to be in the Penobscot Bay area. That's three hours minimum to the New Hampshire border, longer if their destination is anywhere farther than that.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Jennifer hasn't been sleeping because of party noises, which she attributes to Wade keeping the Gull open all hours of the night. This is supported by Wade suggesting it to Duke. However, when the noise interrupts a daytime nap, and she goes downstairs to find the Gull empty, it's revealed she's hearing the Barn.
  • Blatant Lies: Trying to hide his Trouble from Jennifer, he makes the flimsy excuse that his reaction to her cutting her finger is because "ladies" who are hurt break his heart.
  • Bloodless Carnage: Dwight and Nathan check for blood at the third crime scene with black lights, only to find there isn't any—at all.
  • Bloody Murder: Mike's Trouble, a less controlled prehensile blood variety.
  • Brick Joke: Duke compares Wade's tenacity to a honey badger, and Jennifer notes he's been watching Animal Planet again. Later, in a conversation with Wade, Duke tells him that Crockers shouldn't live together, like rhinos.
  • Call-Back: Duke apologizes for choking Dwight while under a Power High. Dwight remarks "at least I didn't get wet this time."
  • Dissimile: Duke tells his brother that perhaps Crockers aren't supposed to live together...like rhinos.
  • Drink-Based Characterization: When William tells her that the bar isn't real, Lexie downs a shot of tequila to prove it is (and takes a moment to gush about how good it is), adding to her characterization thus far that has shades of a Hard-Drinking Party Girl.
  • Expensive Glass of Crap: Jennifer walks in on Duke pouring cheap liquor into empty bottles of expensive liquor.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Dwight pulls out a map of Haven to track the murders, and it appears the founders were directionally challenged, as East Haven is on the west side of town and West Haven is on the east side of town.
  • Gas Leak Cover Up: Dwight has to come up with increasingly creative excuses for witnesses to the blood Trouble. Including telling one guy the puddle he saw was sewer gas and he was hallucinating.
  • Hair of the Dog: Duke makes one for a hungover Wade.
  • Hearing Voices: Jennifer can hear the Barn again
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal: Mike apparently hates Nathan so much that his Trouble targets him. In a twist on the trope, even Mike didn't know he hated Nathan, and he claims he didn't want him dead.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Nathan talks Duke down from his violent Power High by telling him "this isn't you."
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: To deal with the suggestion that her existence isn't real, Lexie decides to call it a day and takes an entire bottle of tequila with her.
  • Identifying the Body: Dwight tasks Vince and Dave with driving to New Hampshire to identify a body they think might be Audrey.
  • Internal Reveal: Duke, Nathan, and Jennifer realize that Audrey is still in the Barn.
  • Neck Lift: Duke manages to do this to Dwight when he gets too close after Duke absorbs the Troubled blood.
  • Overdrawn at the Blood Bank: Inverted. Dwight makes a remark that the puddle of blood he and Jordan saw escape into the sewer system was "easily 30 pints, enough for three people." The special effects team didn't read the script, apparently, because the the puddle shown is nowhere near that amount.
  • The Reveal: The Barn is still imploding, and Audrey/Lexie is danger of being taken with it.
  • Rustproof Blood: Mike's blood Trouble travels in a puddle that is always a shade of red, regardless of how long it's been travelling around Haven.
  • Wham Line:
William: This place has many names. You know it most recently as "the Barn."
    Lexie: I prefer "bar."
William: Well, call it what you will. It's dying. And unless we move fast it's going to take you with it.
  • Wham Shot: After William reveals the Barn is dying, he looks around and sees the walls are disintegrating, though Lexie cannot.
  • Year Outside, Hour Inside: In a Continuity Nod, the scene in the Barn picks up where it left off in the last episode while days have passed in Haven.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: As soon as Lexie tells William she believes him, the bar empties of its customers. Rhonda is still around, and Lexie must let go of her. The scene is poignant and sad, as it's implied Lexie is isolated and Rhonda is her best (and likely only) friend.
