Season 4, episode 11

In The Clamor And The Clangor

Stan Applebaum has died. (Not that one.) He left money to repair the town's church bells. Hep Alien has been booked for a gig at CBGBs. Paris is suddenly interested in political fiction despite being pre-med. Lorelai finds out Luke has bought a house with Nicole. Lorelai and Luke conspire to break the bells, and it comes out that Luke's the one who broke them the last time. Lane goes to Rory instead of home after her gig that got cancelled.

Mrs. Kim has an epiphany about her relationship with Lane.

Tropes

  • Blatant Lies: Luke keeps insisting that he moved to Litchfield where Nicole lives, but after getting over the shock of it, Lorelai doesn't buy it because in practice he still lives in Stars Hollow.
  • Call-Back: William, the guy Rory tried to ask on a date, tells people about a stalker he has, and Rory thinks it's her.
  • Captain Obvious: Lorelai says that only four people have died so far this year. Sookie replies that that means that a fifth one hasn't died yet.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Lorelai says Luke should work for the CIA, Sookie thinks she means the Culinary Institute of America.
  • Daddy Issues: Paris argues that the conflict between Israel and Palestine is due to Judaism and Islam both descending from Abraham, so all the conflict is about who Daddy likes best.
  • Foreshadowing: Discussed. Sookie, Rory, and Lorelai discuss expecting a fifth person in town to die this year, naming a few people who might be the next to go. When two of them seem to be about to, all three feel guilty.
Lorelai: We are The Witches of Eastwick.
  • Guilty Pleasure: The band all name theirs to make Zach feel better about knowing anything about N Sync.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • Lane figures they don't need a sound guy to play a gig.
    • Lorelai bought a gym membership after she gave birth to lose all the weight, but was too fat to be going to the gym.
    • As Lorelai points out, Luke is the one passing judgment on him living with Nicole – by not living with Nicole.
    • Reverend Skinner walks in on Lorelai and Luke sabotaging the church bells and his look of relief is priceless.
Rev. Skinner: Oh, thank God. Carry on.
  • It's All About Me: Subverted, as Luke calls Lorelai on this for wanting to know when he moves out of town.
  • Metaphorgotten:
    • Lorelai feels that she was the liver treat, or even the cute accessories, to Luke's dog, and it makes her feel disappointed that he didn't tell her about moving to Litchfield when he did.
    • Rory points out that Lane must have a spine because otherwise she'd be walking funny.
  • My Way Or The High Way: Mrs. Kim tells Lane she can do her own thing living elsewhere.
  • Not So Stoic: Lane snuck out one night, and Mrs. Kim calls in a search party and a prayer group by four in the morning.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: In a class discussion about the Israel-Palestine conflict, Rory talks about the guy spreading lies about her, but he doesn't realize that because he isn't and assumes they're talking about the Israel-Palestine conflict.
  • Pun: After he gets tinnitus, Kirk can't tell which are the churchbells and which are the "kirkbells".
  • Shout-Out:
  • Stalker with a Crush: The guy Rory asked to get coffee with her a few episodes ago is now telling a story about a creepy stalker. Rory thinks he's making up stories about her, but he is talking about someone else.
  • Take That!: For the fall of the music industry, Britney Spears has to shoulder some of the blame alongside Rory borrowing CDs instead of buying them.
  • Take That Me: Rory rhetorically asks Lorelai how self-centered she has to be to just assume William was talking about her. Lorelai replies that she would have assumed the same thing, so incredibly self-centered.
  • Vague Age: Hank Krutzman isn't 110, that's just what Lorelai says when she means that someone is really old.
  • You Owe Me: Lorelai argues that Rory owes her for keeping her from scratch her chickenpox. She has pretty skin now and therefore owes Lorelai to prioritize her complaints about Luke over her studying.
