Bean and Mora find Zog, who has been rescued by Alva Gunderson. Alva invites them all over for diner, but it turns out to be a trap to harness Bean's magic powers. Meanwhile, in Dreamland, the Trogs use their goo to reanimate Bad Bean's decapitated body.
Tropes:
- Actor Allusion: At the end Zog says "Let's go already!"
- Batman Gambit: Presumably, Alva fully intended for Bean to sneak off and investigate his secret lab and the seemingly robotic Bean, to get trapped in it.
- Boarding Party: After losing their motorcycle, Bean and Mora board a nearby ship with the intent to hijack it. They quickly back down when it turns out to be Oona's ship, as she is more than happy to give the two a ride to Steamland.
- Bookcase Passage: The entrance to Alva's secret lab is through a door disguised as a supply closet shelf.
- Borrowed Catchphrase:
- Bean once again uses the Jester's "oh, no!"
- On meeting Oona, Bean finishes her usual "or is?" for her.
- Brick Joke: When Alva first appears, he defensively insists his robots have names, but that he can't remember them at that moment. Later on, he's written their names down on his hand.
- Brief Accent Imitation: Bean copies Alva's accent to mock him.Bean: "Oh, Bean, I love you! Let's invent a helicopter powered by love!"
- The Cameo: Edith the Fortune-teller is among the crowd in the bar, but doesn't speak.
- Continuity Nod: Bean and Mora return to Skybert's secret lab, Bean offhandedly mentioning she killed him and that he's in Hell.
- Designated Girl Fight: Surprisingly averted; when Zog and Mora confront Alva and the Arch-Druidess, Mora fights Alva while Zog fights the Arch-Druidess.
- Destination Defenestration: How Bean, Zog and Mora escape Alva's lab.
- Fanboy: Alva is a huge fan of the cartoon series Squalid Squirrel, and is excited to meet Mora, the voice actress.
- Foreshadowing:
- Malfus gives several "spooky clues" about what she's going to run into, including an upcoming instance of being Chazzzzzed.
- While at the bar, Mora asks Bean to ask about the word "awnsho", leading to the reveal later on in the episode she can't read.
- Freeze-Frame Bonus: Among the signs in the pawnshop is a sign saying they want books on jokes... except golf jokes.
- Gone Horribly Right: Alva's plan to get Bean so mad it will trigger her magic works, but she unleashes such a large amount of lightning it shorts out the laboratory, frees Bean from the machine she was trapped in, and allows the protagonists to escape.
- Hat of Flight: Alva has several modified hats in his laboratory, including one with a propeller that allows the wearer to fly (or at least descend at a safe pace). Mora steals it during the fight and uses it to get herself, Bean and Zog to safety after they jump out of the lab's window.
- Hidden Agenda Villain: With heavy lampshading when Alva triumphantly exclaims his "infuriatingly mysterious" plan is working. It involves absorbing Bean's lightning, going on a journey, and Hencho the Trog.
- Human Notepad: Alva has written the names of his robots on his hand since he can't memorize them.
- Hypocritical Humor: On leaving the bar, Bean finds her and Mora's carriage has been stolen, and asks who would be so heartless as to do that, before seeing a baby carriage and taking it.
- Ignored Enamoured Underling: The Arch-Druidess is actually hurt when she realizes Alva doesn't remember her birthday.
- Internal Reveal:
- Bean learns that Zog was Buried Alive by the Arch-Druidess, and that this caused his mental breakdown.
- At the end of the episode, Zog, Bean and Mora learn that Freckles, Jasper and Derek are trapped in the freak show.
- The Merch: In-Universe example; Alva collects a lot of Squalid Squirrel merch. He's also licensed Bean's likeness without her permission.
- Never Learned to Read: Mora reveals she can't read, so there's no point in Bean trying to write her a message.
- Open Mouth, Insert Foot: Things get insanely awkward when Bean suggests finding a disguise for Mora that makes her "look like a whole woman" and Mora takes some serious offense at the insinuations.
- Ow, My Body Part!: Getting zapped by Bean's lightning causes Alva to proclaim "ow, my forehead!"
- The Power of Hate: Alva and the Arch-Druidess deliberately try to get Bean mad in order to activate her powers.
- The Roast: The Arch-Druidess subjects Bean to one to get her riled up.
- Robot Girl: Subverted; at first it seems Alva has tried to build a robot-Bean, but it is actually a suit designed to trap Bean and harness her magic.
- Seashell Bra: The pawn shop has apparently sold them in the past, but the clerk tells Mora that they're out of stock.
- Series Continuity Error: Back in "Steamland Confidential" Bean already knew the Arch-Druidess buried her father alive, but in this episode she is somehow unaware of this until she learns the truth when Zog and the Arch-Druidess fight.
- Shout-Out: The robotic Bean/suit Alva designed is inspired by the robotic Maria from Metropolis
- Signs of Disrepair: Mora and Bean come across a sign for a place called "The Establishment", but most letters on the neon sign are broken, leaving only "Stab Me".
- Take That!: To conventions, when Mora dismisses the idea of going to one with having spent three years in a real freakshow.
- Trauma Button: Just seeing the Archdruidess again causes Zog's honking to reassert itself.
- Villainous Rescue: At some point between the previous episode and this one, Alva rescued Zog from the wrestlers and took him to his tower to get freshened up.
