Recap / All For Luz - Chapter 3

Go To

S1 - Ep 3: The "Not-So-Dull" Summer Camp - Pt 2

Luz and the other camp kids arrive at summer camp but before they can actually do anything, they black out and awaken alone in their dorm-room. Things go from going from 0 to 100 when the state's governor gets involved with his plans for the teenagers.

This chapter contains examples of:

  • Above Good and Evil: When Counsellor Johnson laments that the Death Camp plan isn't right, Governor Maxwell simply just shrugs and tells him what's right and what's wrong doesn't matter in the end, when learning how to serve your nation.
  • Absolute Xenophobe: The Governor of Connecticut set up an entire death game one day after people started showing up with superpowers.
  • And That's Terrible: Luz mentally notes anybody who lets anyone sleep with shoes on after kidnapping them is a sick freak.
  • Antagonistic Governor: Maxwell is blatantly played out to be a massive douchebag and a morally bankrupt character, seeing as he put 33 children of varying ages into a literal death game for his sick kicks.
  • Arc Villain: Maxwell is the first of many villains introduced that will show up throughout the course of the story. He is NOT the main villain of the fanfic, but rather the Big Bad of the arc he is contained in.
  • Deadly Game: Maxwell has the 33 kidnapped teenagers, including Luz, all compete in a Death Game where they are split into 3 teams and are force to kill each other, with the last team left standing.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Counsellor Johnson is shocked and disgusted by what Rodger Maxwell plans to do with the superhuman children. He's not happy at all about being forced to go along with it.
  • Fantastic Racism: Maxwell refers to the superhuman teenagers as "biological weapons".
  • Faux Affably Evil: When the soldiers pull out their semi-automatic guns to cow the vocal protests of the kidnapped kids, Maxwell tells them to put their weapons down, as it's unnecessary on children while being visibly amused at the sight of it all.
  • FBI Agent: Governor Maxwell is described as looking like the stereotype, minus the sunglasses and wiretap connected to his ear.
  • Forced into Evil: Camp Counsellor Johnson being coerced by Governor Rodger Maxwell into helping him effectively kidnap the children with powers going to his camp to turn them into Super Soldiers for the government. He really didn't want to do it.
Counsellor Johnson: I'm sorry, but I have no choice. Please, God, forgive me, because I'm sending these children to their doom…
  • Gas Station of Doom: Subverted. Nothing bad happens at the gas station the bus stops at (besides buying overpriced snacks).
  • Genre Savvy: Luz claims that she's seen enough death-game anime to know where being kidnapped by some guy in a military uniform is going. She makes a conscious effort to keep a rational head, and to not do or say anything reckless in her situation.
  • Goth: One of the kidnapped teenagers, Carla, is dressed like one.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: Luz tells Julia puppy dogs are her favourite pet animals.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Governor Rodger Maxwell's introduction establishes the story as Darker and Edgier.
  • Large and in Charge: Rodger Maxwell is described as a large, over 6 ft. tall, muscular man and is the current Governor in the State of Connecticut.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Luz and all the other superhuman teens have this reaction they're told by the Governor of Connecticut he arranged for them to be kidnapped and put into a death-game scenario.
  • Nerves of Steel: A 17-year-old girl with vitiligo shows this, being the first of the kidnapped kids to calmly question the Antagonistic Governor why he orchestrated the whole thing, while everyone else was too afraid to say anything at all.
  • Not Hyperbole: Governor Maxwell makes it explicitly clear when he says eliminate the other teams he doesn't mean so like in a game of tag. He means eliminated as in killed, wiped off the face of the Earth.
  • Oh, Crap!: Kennedy Jenkins freezes in place and goes pale when Governor Rodger Maxwell tells him who he is and knows his name.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Maxwell has this when he sees the looks of dread on the teens he abducted.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Rodger Maxwell seems to be milking this.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Maxwell tells the Johnson that he paid off his bosses with extra funding for Reality Check Camp to allow him to carry out his project.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: The Governor is described as wearing a black two-piece suit, with a white dress shirt underneath, and a black tie.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Luz notes she's played and watched far too much Danganronpa to know how that would end if they were put into a Deadly Game.
    • Luz mentally comments that in their predicament she probably looks like a frightened dog whimpering as they were chained up to be shot in the face point blank with a shotgun. The girl then notes play way too much Wolfenstein if that was the first thing she thought of…
  • Stunned Silence: The superpowered teenagers are scared into silence as the Antagonistic Governor explains why he kidnapped them.
  • Super-Soldier: Governor Maxwell claims he wants to turn the superhuman teenagers into these.
  • Tranquil Fury:
    • Camp Counsellor Johnson is described as one point looking like wanting to scream his face off at the governor, he's able to compose himself, not wanting to continue to let the Smug Snake to get a rise out of him.
    • Julia is depicted with eyes glimmering in anger, repulsion, and fury; yet has a ever-calm expression that did not display any of that. Luz envies hat characteristic.
  • Tap on the Head: Luz felt a sharp and sudden pain in the back of her head, before being knocked out at night-time. The same thing happened to the other kids and they all wake up during daylight no worse for wear.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: Governor Maxwell takes control of the Reality Check Camp from the original counsellor and turns it into a Death Camp.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The governor tries to present himself as this, explain his motive for kidnapping 33 superpowered children to monitor said powers.
  • Wham Episode: Rodger Maxwell, governor of Luz's state, has her and 32 other kids going to Reality Check Summer Camp kidnapped to be put in a Deadly Game with, as far as anyone could tell, is supported by the government, and under the threat of being gunned down if they try to escape.

"Now… any questions?"
