Fanfic / Unfortunately for Everyone, Midoriya Izuku is Australian

Go To

Unfortunately for Everyone, Midoriya Izuku is Australian is a crossover between My Hero Academia and Team Fortress 2 by Cheese_Bandit21 on Archive of Our Own.

One day, Saxton Hale goes on a visit to Japan after receiving a letter from Nedzu requesting his presence there. He runs into Izuku Midoriya, who happens to be his long-lost son, while making his way to Mann Co.'s Japanese branch HQ, deciding to train Izuku in the ways of Australia in the process. Things get crazy from there on out as Izuku gets involved in the shenanigans of the Team Fortress crew while studying to be a hero at UA.

This fic provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass: Izuku gains ungodly fighting skills and Super-Strength from his time in Australia, as well as later gaining One-For-All. One-For-All also gives the deceased Mercs the ability to manifest in the land of the living temporarily, in order to help Izuku.
  • Adaptation Deviation:
    • Hitoshi Shinso replaces Minoru Mineta in class 1-A.
    • The RED and BLU Mercs (minus the Engineer and the Doctor, who are still alive) are sharing the same space with the previous holders of One for All as a result of Merasmus cursing them to never reach the afterlife unless he is defeated.
    • The event after the obstacle course race in UA's Sports Festival is Mann vs. Machine.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Sir Nighteye and his team show up way before the Work Studies arc after Izuku chooses to intern with him.
    • Overhaul and Eri show up far before the Shie Hassaikai arc after Izuku chooses to intern at Sir Nighteye's agency.
    • Himiko Toga reveals herself at Hosu after following Izuku around for a while ever since she saw him from the Sports Festival's broadcasted footage.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: Spending a year in Australia has changed Izuku into a loud and proud Boisterous Bruiser, a far cry from his initial characterization as a Shrinking Violet.
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul:
    • Izuku basically ignores Bakugo thanks to his stint in Australia making him far more confident in himself.
    • Sir Nighteye is not as antagonistic towards Izuku after Nana Shimura manifests herself to chew him out over his behavior.
  • Affectionate Nickname: The Engineer calls his great-great-(insert more greats here)-grand-niece Melissa Shields his "lil' Curie"
  • Awesome Aussie: Saxton and Izuku are both Australian (half-Australian in Izuku's case) and very, very badass.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Saxton is all about announcing his presence in the loudest, craziest manner, and Izuku later becomes one himself after his training in Australia.
  • Country Matters: As the pinnacle of Australianess, Hale makes liberal use of the word, as does Izuku, though to a lesser degree, after he has finished his training in Australia. The narrator also makes use of it.
  • Crossover Relatives:
    • Saxton Hale is Izuku's dad from his time going undercover in Japan as Hisashi Midoriya.
    • The Engineer (aka Dell Conagher) is David Shield's uncle and Melissa's grand-uncle, though there's actually an unknown number of greats that preceed both of them.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Izuku singlehandedly manhandles the League of Villains during the USJ attack.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: It's safe to say that Izuku's got a good amount of female attention from his well-muscled chest and Japan-shaped chest hair pattern.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: The title says it all in regards to the chaos that ensues in the story.
  • Fusion Fic: The events of Team Fortress 2 happened in the distant past of the MHA world.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Izuku choosing to intern with Sir Nighteye allows him to bust Overhaul before he has a chance to cause more trouble.
  • Groin Attack: Bakugo gets hit in the balls by Uraraka during the Sports Festival finals.
  • Land Down Under: Subverted; while Australia is chock full of insanely strong superpowered animals, it also produces extremely advanced technology powered by Australium, making them the global leader in technology, and has a functional (if somewhat crazy) society. Though it is also noted they tend to keep to themselves, and almost never let any of their Australium technology be exported, with what little they do sell being extremely expensive. Combined with the media outside of Australia primarily focusing on the dangerous wildlife, and most people outside of the country think it is a backwater, with the only girl in Class 1-A to know better being Momo, whose extremely rich family had her tutored in a very wide range of subjects.
  • Lemony Narrator: The narrator of the story frequently breaks the fourth wall, pokes fun at a variety of tropes along with the MHA and Team Fortress fanbase, and insults characters they don't like.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick: Izuku is understandably grossed out after Saxton recounts the times he and Inko had sex down to the last excruciating detail.
  • Punch a Wall: Izuku hits the wall twice, the first time over Endeavor's abuse of his family and the second a result of learning about how Overhaul used Eri as a guinea pig for his deranged experiments at making a Quirk-destroying drug.
  • Race Lift: Izuku is half-Australian from Saxton Hale being his father.
  • Rated M for Manly: Saxton and Izuku are both quite manly and strong.
  • Only Sane Man: The Spy is the only Merc with an iota of common sense (other than the Engineer, but he's still alive), something that he tells Yoichi about after the Mercs and the Vestiges set up their alliance.
  • Share the Male Pain: Pretty much everyone who is male in the Sports Festival arena end up having phantom pain in their groins after witnessing Uraraka deck Bakugou in the family jewels.
  • Testosterone Poisoning: Toga gets a literal example of this trope applied to her after she consumes Izuku's blood due to the Australium running in his veins carrying too much power for her body to handle, resulting in Toga passing out with a mustache on her face.
  • Training from Hell: It's safe to say that Izuku's training in the Land Down Under is pretty hard considering the insanely tough Quirked animals that live there. Highlights include being chased by a platypus with Super-Strength, having to defeat a pod of saltwater crocodiles with roundhouse kicks, and fighting against a riot of fire-breathing kookaburras to prove himself to them.
  • Training Montage: Chapter 4 is basically a condensed recap of Izuku's ten months of training in Australia with his dad featuring the biggest moments of that period of time.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Izuku goes shirtless 24/7 after his time in Australia, with his chest hair shaped in a perfect replica of Japan.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Saxton Hale is quite unamused at the inaction of Death Arms, Backdraft, Mt. Lady, and Kamui Woods while Bakugou was held hostage by the Sludge Villain, cussing them out after the aforementioned Pro Heroes attempt to tell him off.
  • Wrestler of Beasts: One reason why Saxton Hale showed up in Japan was that there was an entire population of superpowered bears that he would enjoy fighting with.
