  • Berserk Button: Anne does not take well to her red hair being mocked, giving Gilbert the silent treatment for years because he called her "carrots" when they were children. And this is after she broke her slate over his head and he's done nothing to apologize since.
  • Blithe Spirit: Anne is cheerful, stubborn and refuses to let tragedy stop her from doing what she wants. Matthew and Marilla, who are quite old and traditional, are surprised by this but learn to get used to it, and her infectious attitude rubs off on them too.
  • Daddy's Girl: Between the Cuthberts, Matthew warms to her first and he happily indulges in buying her chocolate and dresses. It takes Marilla some more time, but eventually she also connects with Anne.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • The Italian dub named her Anna. So much for her insisting it was "Anne" with an E...
    • The European Portuguese dub changed her name to Ana Silvestre.
    • Anne was called Shamma in the Arabic dub.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: She keeps her trademark long braided pigtails even as a teenager, only briefly losing them after she's forced to cut her hair after accidentally dying it green. This is in contrast to her book counterpart, who stops wearing her hair in braids after the hair-dying incident.
  • Imagine Spot: At least Once an Episode, we get an insight into Anne's vivid, flowery imagination. It is usually full of flying creatures, nature and very colourful.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: She has big blue eyes and is a cheerful and inquisitive little girl.
  • Insistent Terminology: Her name is spelled with an "E".
  • Fiery Redhead: Anne is feisty, expressive, and refuses to take anyone's insults and criticism, getting in trouble for speaking back. She's ready to tell off Marilla, Rachel Lynde, Josie, Mr. Phillips and anyone who irks her, and doesn't care about being punished or excluded.
  • Friendless Background: Anne had nobody before she arrived at Avonlea, and soothes herself with her imagination instead.
  • Genki Girl: Anne is a free-spirited bundle of energy who shakes Matthew and Marilla with her sharp tongue and isn't afraid to get rough and rowdy.
  • Heartwarming Orphan: Anne never knew her birth parents, and it's implied that she was abused in the prior orphanages she lived in. Despite this, she's endlessly cheerful and inspires everyone around her.
  • My Hair Came Out Green: Anne is a natural redhead, and wishes to have dark black hair. However, when she dyes it, it turns out green.
  • Spirited Young Lady: No one can put a damper on Anne or tell her what to do; once she's made up her mind she's made up her mind. The biggest example of this would be when Gilbert called her "carrots" so she broke her slate over his head; Mr. Phillips tried to get Anne to behave by making her sit with Gilbert, but instead she decided she'd never attend school again.
  • Youthful Freckles: She's an imaginative chatterbox and she initially has freckles. She no longer has them as a teenager, showing how she's matured.

The Cuthberts

    Tropes that apply to both
  • Brother–Sister Team: Matthew and Marilla manage a ranch together, with Matthew doing the field work and Marilla doing the cleaning.
  • Down on the Farm: The Cuthbert siblings run a ranch full of cattle.
  • Family Theme Naming: The Cuthberts are Matthew and Marilla.
  • Good Parents: After hearing of Anne's ordeal, they decided to take her in and provide for her, and eventually started looking to her as if she was their own daughter.

  • Big Fun: He is tubby and fat, and a gentle, kind man.
  • Bumbling Dad: He wasn't prepared for a little girl to be thrust into him and his sister's lives, but once he meets Anne he does everything he can to help her live in Avonlea.
  • Cannot Talk to Women: Matthew has a weakness for women, and this is why he has never married or dated in spite of his old age. Fortunately for him, Anne is more than happy to speak for him.
  • Delicate and Sickly: Due to his old age, Matthew is prone to heart attacks and eventually passes away.
  • Shrinking Violet: Matthew is a very shy person by nature, especially around women.
  • Token Religious Teammate: Implied, since he calls Anne a "gift from God".
    Marilla Cuthbert

Marilla Cuthbert (マリラ・カスバート)

Voiced by: Fumie Kitahara (Japanese), Diane Appleby (English), Dyne Mousseau (French), Ursula Traun (German), Mirella Pace (Italian), Almudena Cacho (European Spanish), Rosa Quiroga (European Portuguese), Hala Auda (Arabic), Unknown (Tagalog), Unknown (Korean), Eliza Oramy (Persian)

  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She is a tight-lipped, set-in-her ways old woman who doesn't want Anne to live with her and Matthew at first, until she sees that Anne is actually a very bright and helpful girl and changes her mind.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • The European Portuguese dub changes her name to Marília Vicente.
    • The Arabic dub names Marilla Muniera.
  • The Spock: She bluntly shoots down Anne's creative ideas and thinks that her imagination is ridiculous.
  • Tsundere: Though strict towards Anne, she secretly loves her as if she was her own child.
  • Verbal Tic: "Oh my gosh!"

Older

  • Best Friend: From the moment they met, Anne and Diana swore to be best friends forever.
  • The Confidant: She is privy to all of Anne's dreams and secrets, and vice versa.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She has dark haired tied with red bows on each side of her head.

  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: In contrast to Anne's fiery red hair, Diana has hair as dark as the night sky.
  • Unsuspectingly Soused: Anne accidentally gets her drunk when she mistakenly serves her the wrong drink, and a very drunk Diana starts speaking without any filter.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Unlike his Jerk with a Heart of Gold book counterpart, Gilbert here is kind from the start, even if he can be a bit cheeky.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: A downplayed and G-rated version, since him and Anne are both kids. She tends to insult/ignore him while he tries to win her favour, and eventually they become a couple.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Anne's attempt to recreate The Lady of Shalott in live-action goes horribly wrong, Gilbert rescues her. After this, Anne starts seeing him in a newer light.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: He pines for Anne even after she's made it clear she hates him for calling her an embaressing name when she was new at school.
  • Dub Name Change: In the European Portuguese dub of the anime, he became Gilberto Brás.
  • Love at First Punch: His crush on Anne began after she snapped her slate over his head.
  • Victorious Childhood Friend: His devotion for Anne pays off as they're an item by the end of the show, post-Time Skip.
