Attack on Titan may be a lot younger than thebigthree, but it's gained almost as much popularity around the world in very little time, and has spawned many memes as a result.
Please add entries in the following format:
The meme[[labelnote:Explanation]]The explanation behind the meme, if necessary[[/labelnote]]Explanation Like this
Guren no Yumiya
The opening song has become popular enough that it's become a meme in itself. Fans mix it with other videos and the music fits.
That's nothing. Watch this one featuring Miffy. On Nico Nico Douga, this becomes the 17th fastest video which broke 1 Million views, within 7 days. The previous 17th? The video which loops the Opening. (And on Niconico, this was published on 7 April. By 24th it becomes the 5th fastest anime to break 2 million views after breaking 1 million views.)
Shingeki no Shitstorm, a video using the opening song that's a massive Take That to the immediate Hatedom that appeared in response to the trailers for Free!, a swimming anime that hadn't even premiered when the videos were postedExplanation The original trailers can be found here and here and was the only footage and information available on the anime at the time of the posting
Bertolt sweating and his various distressed facial expressions.
Then there is Jean and people (jokingly... most of the time) mistaking him for Reiner or Thomas due to similiar character designs. Jean also is somewhat of a memetic Butt Monkey on certain boards, where people who like him or ship him with Mikasa are often told: "Jean, please leave/go to bed."
Levi's ass has achieved memetic status, because of his bizarre pose◊ after kicking Eren.
Levi is a Disney PrincessExplanation From a scene where he opens a window to clean, people noticed the similarities between that scene and the beginning of Beauty and the Beast in which everyone opens their windows during a musical number. The fandom took the joke and ran with it
Bonjour!◊Explanation A gif which edits the scene from Beauty and the Beast in which the villagers greet Belle by opening their windows to include the scene in which Levi is opening the windows of his squad's new base in order to clean
Photoshopping together pictures of Armin and Coconut Head, due to their resemblance is becoming popular. Observe.◊
According to this chart◊, Levi and Mikasa are both heavier than Eren despite being shorter and the same height respectively. Encouraged by official artwork that shows Mikasa having distinct abs, many fans have humorously depicted Eren as being noticeably◊ scrawnyin◊ comparison◊ to the two's much more muscular builds.
Potato GirlExplanation Sasha Blouse/Braus, a female character in the show likes to eat food, especially steamed potatoes. Her first scene has her eating a steamed potato that she stole in front of their drill instructor
Ascended Meme: Sasha is being featured as a DLC character in the 3DS game, and will have a giant knife and fork as alternate weapons.
Eren should really stop leaving Mikasa's sideSPOILERS! Many fans have pointed out that bad things happen whenever Eren is separated from Mikasa during battle. The first time was during Trost, where he was swallowed whole by a Titan and nearly killed. The second time was during the mission to capture the Female Titan, in which said Female Titan murdered most of the Levi Squad and kidnapped him. The most recent instance was where Eren merely stepped away from Mikasa for a few minutes, which ultimately resulted in his kidnapping and nearly being dragged outside of the walls against his will
LegoutExplanation The name the fans have given to an unnamed background character who looks like Armin with brown hair, commonly referred to as Armin's Evil Twin. Originated from a joke edit post, but then a character strongly resembling said edit appeared in the background of episode 23.
The nickname has since extended to an actual character named Nifa, who bears a striking resemblance to Armin. 4chan has also dubbed her Armin's "good twin."
** As of Chapter 57, her fate has given her the additional nickname of "Faceoff."
Jean is a horse. Explanation In episode 23, Eren makes a comment about Jean having a horse face. The fandom took it and ran with it, its popularity bolstered by the fact that using people with horse heads to represent mindless internet trolls was already a popular meme.
Sorry, that was a strange thing to ask.Explanation In episode 15 Erwin comes out of nowhere to ask Eren who he thinks the true enemy is, he then notes that was a strange question to ask. Fans took screenshots and replaced the question he asked with even stranger ones that would make no sense to ask in the show.
Petra-ingExplanation Petra dies in episode 21 after being slammed facefirst into a tree by the Female Titan. It's become a photo meme since then to imitate her pose upon death against a tree.
Mikasa es su casa Explanation A pun on the Spanish phrase mi casa es su casa (My house is your house)
People mistaking Armin for Krista. The fact that he later crossdresses as her to fool the kidnappers certainly didn't help anything.
ALL HAIL QUEEN HISTORIA! Explanation In chapter 55, Erwin learns the Reiss family is the real royal family and plans to replace the Fake King with Historia.
You're an Ackerman. He's an Ackerman. Everyone's an Ackerman. Explanation Levi's surname is revealed to be Ackerman and the man who killed Historia's other is revealed to be Ackerman as well.
You're an acronym. He's an acronym. Everyone's an acronym.
STOP KILLING OFF EVERYONE LEVI CARES FOR! Explanation Brought on by the expression Levi has in chapter 57 after he sees the rest of Hanji's squad gunned down by the Humanity Suppression task force. Seriously, someone give that man a hug.
Kanye Ackerman. Explanation The brutal and mysterious Captain Ackerman of the First Brigade is stated by Levi to be a former Serial Killer and his mentor/surrogate father whose first name is Kaney, which lends itself nicely to an anagram.
"Yo Levi, Imma let you finish, but I'm Humanity's strongest. Explanation Extension of the parent meme, helped tremendously by the fact that most English translations actually make "Yo Levi" the first thing he says to Levi.
Your friendly neighborhood Military Policeman. Explanation Happens during Levi and Kaney Ackermans' fight where Levi escapes into the bar and Kaney smashes through yelling about how he was there to get rid of all the bad guys. Helped tremendously by the fact that both Kaney and Spiderman do similar acrobatic fucking pirouettes off the handle.
Many people are parodying Kaney's Guns Akimbopose, mainly because of how his legs are drawn to be incredibly long.
Marlow is a kappa. Explanation Jean calls Marlow a kappa-head, due to his haircut in chapter 59.
Despite being the series' biggest contributors to Nightmare Fuel, the titans walk the fine line between Narm and Narm Charm. The anime just follows in the same tradition, and probably made things even better. (Both funnier and scarier, really.)
From Japan, there's a Photo Perspective meme quickly gaining popularity, in which some people pose close to the camera to look as big as Titans, with other people jumping around in the background to look like human warriors. Some images even have the titans from the manga photoshopped in with the people posing. IGN News even picked up on it, but they didn't seem to be aware of how the meme held its origins with this anime. Here◊ are◊ a◊ few.◊
Sink fandomExplanation One text post on Tumblr (along the lines of "SNK fandom? No, I'm in the sink fandom") spawned a strange trend of people posting pictures of uniquely-designed sinks
Do you love the sky?Explanation It's become pretty common on tumblr to post screenshots of the sky in succession, creating a panning effect as the user scrolls down. As the sky segues from blue to yellow and then to red, some screenshot of something horrible will show up such as the Titan who ate Eren's mother or Petra's death
It should be noted that this meme is not exclusive to Attack on Titan, and will sometimes end in a comedic image.
What am I willing to put up with today?NOT FUCKING THIS!Explanation A popular joke shared between the fandom for SNK and that of Game Grumps. The quote came from Egoraptor, who was freaking out over a game-breaking glitch in the infamous Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). Egoraptor's real name is Arin, which is pronounced similarly to Eren. Now fans of snk will often match up either images or footage of some of the more out-of-nowhere plot twists and events from the series—the second appearance of the Colossal Titan being a popular one—with the audio of Arin freaking out, with the intention of it being interpreted as Eren freaking out, and Armin trying to calm him down
DON'T DROP THAT DUN-DUN-DAAAAHExplanation Kushii Smiles on YouTube made a dubbed-over video using vine videos and a segment between Eren and Armin was "Don't drop that Thun Thun". Since then, many other fans have made art and jokes about it on Tumblr
CommanderMeowingtonExplanation What the fandom has dubbed a random cat who was casually sitting next to blood during a Titan attack.
I clooose my eeeye—I CAN'T DO IT!!!Explanation (SPOILERS IN THE LINK) A popular audio post that made its way around tumblr. The audio is of a man (that man, by the way, is Tobuscus) attempting to sing a sad song (Dust in the Wind by Kansas), but finds himself overcome with the urge to cry as he does so. It became popular to post this audio along with images of the more tragic moments from the anime around tumblr, and then it spread to other fandoms.
"You're Bean." Explanation From the scene where Hange names the captured titans Sawney and Bean. There's also a popular Tumblr post with Hange's arm pointing at the reblogger's avatar and calling them Bean.
AttackonConExplanation A series of videos made by D-Piddy (aka "Dancing Deadpool") who dresses as the Colossal Titan at cons and dances. He's beloved by the majority of the fandom.
Is this Attack on Titan? Explanation It's become a popular joke to post this question with just about anything that seems epic or over-the-top.
Do You Want to Kill Some Titans?Explanation A popular parody of the song Do You Want to Build a Snowman from Frozen. Several versions of the song have been made which replace all mentions of building snowmen with killing titans and change the lyrics so talk about the characters' lives as members of the Scouting Legion.
VIVA LA REVOLUCION! Explanation (SPOILERS) Come chapter 54, the Scouting Legion is now spearheading a revolt against the king.
What the fuck is in the basement? Explanation (minor spoilers) Whatever is in Eren's basement is central to the plot, but recent events have pushed the journey to plug the hole in the wall and find what's in the basement to the wayside and made it clear to the fandom that the wait to find out what's in it may be years long.
Who wants to bet it's someone watching the events of SNK on a giant t.v?
Frodo getting told. Explanation (SPOILERS) Early in the show's run, Image Boards often got alot of posts of captions of Frodo Baggins questioning why the humans of the wall don't just live underground or develop better artillery weaponry and air transportation. In chapters 50 and beyond, we are shown that there are subterranean settlements, but they're crowded, miserable places meant as emergency sanctuaries, and that things like revolvers and hot air balloons were being researched, but shut down because the high authority deemed them of little help against Titans and a danger of being turned against the king, breaking down the complaints on two levels each.
We already tried that, it didn't work, you midget, gout-ridden bastard.
