A Company Of Fools
Commander Gaz'ragar "Gaz" Stonehand
Played by: Stu
- Race: Half-OrcClass: Paladin (Oath of Redemption)
The current Commander of the Phoenix Legion, he assumed leadership when the previous Commander, Star, went AWOL for reasons unknown during their layover in Ravenreach. He joined up after the Legion saved him in the desert after he'd tried - foolishly - to approach an aggressive Orc encampment, where they beat him half-to-death and left him for dead, leaving his right lower-tusk broken. Since arriving in Grovhaire, he's often expressed a preference for the actual field of battle in its stead.
—
- Casual Kink: When attending a party for Broker in episode 31, he went without his armor, but did bring some manacles along.
- The Fettered: He believes that everyone should be offered redemption, and won't employ "dishonorable" tactics if it can reasonably be avoided.
- Good Scars, Evil Scars: Not a scar, but he suffered a broken tusk when trying to approach an Orc tribe peacefully.
- Martial Pacifist: While he prefers to convert enemies to allies, he'll absolutely end enemies once combat begins.
- One prisoner asked to be given a swift execution rather than face a long, torturous death at the hands of his former allies, which Gaz obliges.
- The Paladin: His class, and he hews very closely to it.
- Punctuation Shaker: The only one with this naming convention.
- Real Name as an Alias: When told he needed a Legion name, he went with "Gaz" - a shortening of his actual name.
- Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Upon arriving in Grovhaire and learning that magic use in the city is restricted, he immediately cast "Calm Emotions" when a Giant was about to break its bonds on the docks, happily paying the fine for the minimized harm.
- The Teetotaler: When offered a drink, his preferred beverage is apple juice.
- Undying Loyalty: To the Legion as a whole, as their intervention had saved his life.
Captain Faegan "Tricks" Wyrmwood
Played by: Adam
- Race: Half-elfClass: Warlock (Fathomless [formerly Lurker in the Deep])
From the lands west of the Halrien desert, Faegan was born to parents on the run after eloping. they taught him how to survive on his own by taking what he needed but eventually the law came for them and they left Faegan in the care of a Gnome they knew. This Gnome initiated Faegan into her cult; The Cult of Dreamer. For his service, Faegan was granted the rare blessing of a pact with the dreamer. This enraged someone in the hierarchy who had Faegan accused of a murder he did not commit. After years in the mine/prison Ebonrock deep in the Halrien Desert (to keep him from his patron), Faegan was recruited into the legion when they came for shelter and in need of recruits. Since then his talent and his patron's power have seen him rise in the ranks of the legion. While he himself has little care of the rest of the world, he will do what he needs to to keep his newly found comrades safe and renowned... even if it is things they themselves would not.
—
- Brutal Honesty: While he'll lie when it serves his purposes, he tends to be extremely blunt, and appreciates this in turn.
- Damsel out of Distress: His capture by House Weston didn't even last a day before he engineered his own escape.
- Deal With The Deep One: By virtue of being a Warlock.
- Dream Walker: He gained this ability upon reaching level 9, and immediately planned to use it to give one of the Claws of Thundermaw night terrors, thereby depriving him of sleep.
- Super Not-Drowning Skills: Has this ability due to his Warlock pact, which he put to effective use when fighting in the cove beneath the Citadel.
- The Unfettered: He has absolutely no qualms about using anything to achieve his goals, but he still maintains his loyalty to the Legion.
Captain Harold "Preacher" Murin
Played by: Jon
- Race: HumanClass: Cleric (Peace (formerly Unity) Domain)
Born in Grovhaire and raised by a merchant, he grew up aware of the Game and sought to avoid it. He joined the priesthood at a young age hoping for a quiet life of contemplation and service to Orad within his home of Grovhaire, only for the Orc Incursions to occur, causing him to be conscripted into the war effort because clerics were needed. In his very first battle, his unit was wiped out by a glory-seeking and incompetent commander. Near death, he was found and taken in by the Phoenix Legion, who nursed him back to health. He initially planned to leave, but found with the Legion a true feeling of camaraderie and purpose, and after he was whole, he officially joined, taking the name of Preacher. After finally returning home, he had hoped there'd be time to rest, but instead found both himself and the Legion thrust neck-deep into the game he initially sought to avoid. Despite all this, however, his faith in Orad has never wavered, and though he may be reluctant to play the Game, he's prepared to help his family escape the machinations around them and survive whatever may come their way.
—
- Irony: Part of his motivation for joining the Legion was to escape The Game of Grovhaire, only to wind up plunged neck-deep into it because he's a Captain of the Legion.
- Power at a Price: As a Peace Domain cleric, he's able to forge bonds with his allies - and if that ally becomes unconscious or dies in battle, he feels it happen.
- Shell-Shocked Veteran: By virtue of his Domain and backstory, he keeps others at arms' length as a defense mechanism.
- Sole Survivor: Part of his background, as his ineffectual commanding officer wound up getting the majority of his unit killed before being saved (and subsequently recruited) by the Legion.
Captain Bliss
Played by: Emmy
- Race: TieflingClass: Bard (College of Eloquence)
- Consummate Liar: She bragged about convincing two brothers that she wasn't sleeping with the other, despite having done so.
Lt. Commander Silver
- Race: TieflingClass: Rogue/Warlock
- Deadpan Snarker: During his conversation with recently-appointed Captain Bliss, he gave her a quick rundown of each of the Captains from his perspective, which was peppered with quips.
- Hero-Worshipper: Has a mild case of this in regards to Commander Gaz, viewing him as Made of Iron with Nerves of Steel, and describes him as stepping out of a storybook.
- Mad Libs Catchphrase: Adopted one after being appointed Lt. Commander, prefacing statements with "As Lieutenant Commander, I say...", though largely because he had offered himself up as a joke, and believed that he was appointed as a joke.
- Missing Mom: His mother was banished to Hell when he was a child - prior to that, it was a surprisingly loving family dynamic.
Sergeant Lukasz "Spectre"
- Race: Half-OrcClass: Echo Knight Fighter
Lt. Commander Grixis "Broker" Neferox
Played by: Jon
- Race: HumanClass: Rogue (Mastermind)
He started out with nothing, but he joined the Phoenix Legion to help his family financially. While his purpose is unclear to him, he loves to gather information and learn.
—
- The Quiet One: He spends a lot of his time observing others during social interactions.
- Retirony: When resigning his commission to go to another city with his parents, the going-away party was subject to an ambush - Broker survived, but it was a close thing.
- The Spymaster: Serves in this capacity within the Legion, setting up information networks and making connections wherever they go.
- Undying Loyalty: His alignment varies depending on who the Commander of the Legion is. Under Star, he had no hesitation with delivering a summary execution to an assassin, but under Gaz's leadership, he was unwilling to torture an assassin for information as he knew that his Gaz wouldn't approve of such a measure.
Captain Lapis "Sparks" Emberglow
Played by: Dio
- Race: DragonbornClass: Rogue (Arcane Trickster)/ Artificer
—
- Beware the Nice Ones: Do not threaten her parents.
- Freak Out: She has one after learning that the strength of her scales' color denote that she'd be a noble in the Dragonborn lands.
- Happily Adopted: Her parents are both halflings, and adopted her after having cleared a slaving vessel. Part of her reason for joining the Legion was to prevent her parents from being recalled into service.
- Hates Being Touched: By virtue of being a Dragonborn, she constantly wears a hat that makes her look like a much shorter human woman - and the person that touches her will see her as her actual self.
- The Pollyanna: She's organized hug groups within the Legion as a means to bolster emotional ties and give support to struggling soldiers.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: She did this in Season 2, episode 8, resigning her post to become Lapis Emberglow again to sail off with Captain Card, citing Gaz's overlooking her for promotion and refusing her personal time as contributing factors.
- Shrinking Violet: She dislikes being in the spotlight.
In General
- We ARE Struggling Together: Prior to the Legion's return, the assembled Houses - minus Carmichael - were able to muddy along with ruling the city, though had divided control into areas of influence.
House Andros
Lady Andros
- Absent-Minded Professor: Downplayed, but she's far more interested in tinkering and invention than the actual responsibilities of running a House, leaving most of that up to her advisors.
- Gadgeteer Genius: She came into power by creating In-Universe devices, most notably the printing press that enables the publication of a daily newspaper.
Nestor Falco
- Intrepid Reporter: He serves as this for Grovhaire's newspaper.
- Quote Mining: He has no qualms with taking certain soundbites out of context to better serve the story.
- Sitcom Archnemesis: Serves as one to Captain Sparks, who really hates his Quote Mining.
House Benton
Lady Benton
- Brutal Honesty: She's decidedly up-front about her aims and her requests of the Legion in helping her accomplish them, to the point of openly speaking about assassinating other House leaders with them.
House Carmichael
Lady Carmichel
- Excessive Mourning: She's spent most of the past decade attempting to bring her husband back to life, and claims that she's spoken to him since his passing. Given the setting, the jury's still out on how true this is.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: She claims to have no interest in taking the Crown herself, save as a last resort to restore stability to the city. When asked about releasing the Legion's back pay from the Crown's coffers (which are under her House's control), she readily agrees to do so.
- Revenant Zombie: She and the inhabitants of the districts she controls (and skirting into adjacent districts) are all this after a spell intended to revive her husband went wrong.
House Dolan
Lord Dolan
- Brutal Honesty: He openly admits to having voted in favor of sending the Legion away in a gambit to weaken the King's power, claiming that he did so because the measure would have passed anyway, so he wanted to make sure he wouldn't be "removed" from the Game later on.
- The Smart Guy: He does run Grovhaire's university, and is an accomplished Wizard in his own right.
House Keaton
Lord Keaton
- Knight Templar: He's unwilling to do anything that doesn't involve the destruction of the undead under House Carmichael
House Weston:
Lord Weston
- He-Man Woman Hater: The only women aboard his ships are maids dressed as such that he gets very handsy with.
- Royals Who Actually Do Something: As crass as he is, he's a Four-Star Badass with the war injuries to back it up.
- Smug Snake: He takes particular pleasure in seeing those he's dealing with at a disadvantage against him, and will do whatever he can to make sure it happens.
Agronak, the Orc Warchief
—
- Asskicking Leads to Leadership: True to Orcish tradition, he attained his position by proving himself.
- A Day in the Limelight: After the first move in the wider Diplomacy game, Agronak accompanied the party into the Archives while Gaz stayed at the Citadel.
- Defeat Means Friendship: After being captured during the Legion's retreat from the desert, he slowly formed a friendship with Gaz, culminating in his being trusted as the Commander's personal bodyguard.
- The Social Darwinist: By virtue of his background, he sees little value in helping the weak.
Thundermaw, the Ancient Blue Dragon
—
- Asskicking Leads to Leadership: As Agronak related, she took on the guise of an Orc and, while disguised as such, utterly trounced the tribal leaders to unify the Orcs in her conquest.
- The Dreaded: She's an Ancient Blue Dragon looking to reestablish the Draconic empire, and she routed the Legion in the first two sessions.
- He Knows Too Much: After the Legion managed to escape, she had an assassin within their forces try and kill the Captains and Commander to help keep her existence a secret.
- Come episode 25, and her symbol was found aboard one of Captain Card's vessels just before they were hit with an explosion. Episode 31 reveals that she does this because she knows that the human-controlled areas would band together in the face of a dragon, so she's using subterfuge and misdirection to weaken them first.
