Main Characters

    Asha
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/profile___asha.jpg

Voiced by: Ariana DeBose Other languages

A sharp-witted, idealistic young girl and leader in the making who makes an impassioned wish towards the stars after discovering a dark truth surrounding her king. Asha would do whatever it takes to stop him.
  • The Apprentice: She sought to be King Magnifico's apprentice at the beginning of the film, but when she protests Magnifico hoarding wishes to himself, he quickly dismisses her.
  • The Bait: In the final act, she lures Magnifico out of his castle with Amaya's help so Asha's friends can take back the wishes Magnifico stole. However, it turns out it was Simon pretending to be Magnifico, and Magnifico was in his castle the whole time.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Despite her faults, Asha is as sweet, loving and levelheaded as she is beautiful and pretty.
  • Fairy Godmother: The end of the movie implies that she'll become one, Star giving her a Magic Wand so that she could grant people's wishes in their stead.
  • Hero Protagonist: Asha vows to protect Star and free the wishes of her people from Magnifico and stop the mad sorcerer's malevolent schemes for the Kingdom of Rosas.
  • Hope Bringer: When the Kingdom of Rosas is at its lowest point, Star has been captured, Magnifico blocks out the stars, and the people having all their wishes stolen by Magnifico and the entire kingdom enslaved by him, she begins singing out her hopes and dreams in defiance against him, with the rest of the people joining in.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: The resemblance between Ariana and Asha is quite striking.
  • Inept Mage: Star grants her Magic Wand to use in her fight against the King. While she tries to use it against Magnifico, her novice status as a magician actually works against her, revealing her hiding place by mistake.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Her name means "hope", "wish", and "desire" in Hindi, reflecting her desire for a better life for her kingdom's people.
    • In Swahili, her name means "life", reflecting her optimistic and hopeful nature.
  • Native Guide: Her job is helping immigrants to the island acclimate to Rosas, giving them a tour of the Kingdom and lessons on their customs, as well as explaining their traditions surrounding wishes.
  • Nice Girl: She's very kind, loving and compassionate and wants the best for her people and their wishes.
  • Non-Answer: When she enacts her scheme to return the wishes from Magnifico by sneaking into his lair (since she can't ask him for anything personally), Dahlia asks how she can stall him in spite of his high authority. She basically gives her no advice on how and tells Dahlia to wing it, leading Dahlia to realize the plan will go horribly. As it turns out, Dahlia was right that it wouldn't work, as the lack of planning led to Asha's friends pushing Magnifico's Berserk Button.
Dahlia: How am I supposed to stall a king?
Asha: You'll think of something. You're a genius!
  • Spanner in the Works: Her attempt at becoming Magnifico's apprentice and requesting he grant her grandfather's wish in the wishing ceremony is precisely what causes Magnifico's mask of benevolence to fall apart and reveal his true self to her. Inevitably, her knowledge of what he presents contradicting what he is causes the two of them to oppose each other.
  • Spark of the Rebellion: After learning that Magnifico has been hoarding the people of Rosas' wishes, and witnessing him destroying wishes first hand, she strives to free the wishes back to the people of Rosas. After seeing Magnifico pervert Simon's wish for his evil purpose, she convinces the rest of her friends and Queen Amaya to turn against the King. Eventually the rest of the kingdom would side with her against Magnifico.
  • Voice of the Resistance: "Knowing What I Know Now" has her telling the truth about Magnifico and rallying her friends into an army to stand against him and reclaim their wishes in song.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: While she understands that he can't grant every wish, the thing that really turns her against Magnifico is when he angrily refuses to return the wishes he chooses not to grant to the wishers, making her fully realize the King was never a hero to begin with.
  • You Could Have Used Your Powers for Good!: She is disappointed to find that King Magnifico has been hoarding wishes from Rosas' citizens and that he only grants those that are to his benefit, encouraging him to grant the wishes his subjects deserve, or at the very least return the wishes he chooses not to grant to the wishers. He replies by angrily dismissing her.
  • Youthful Freckles: She is a seventeen-year old girl with noticeable freckles decorating her face.

    Star
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/profile___star.png
A sentient, magical star who comes down from the night sky after hearing Asha's wish to aid her in her quest to free the wishes of her people from Magnifico. Star cannot speak, but pantomimes their thoughts and feelings and is always eager to help others.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Star's gender is never clarified — assuming Star even has a gender to begin with. Merchandise uses 'their' to describe them.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Star can give life to lifeless objects or non-sentient life.
  • Black Bead Eyes: Star has big round dots for eyes.
  • Break the Cutie: Has their horrified reaction when Magnifico turns their wishes into stone and then get sealed inside his staff. They get better.
  • But Now I Must Go: After Magnifico is defeated and the people's wishes are returned to them, Star has to go back to their home in the sky, so they can continue to be there for all the people of the world to wish on.
  • Character Tic: They always touch people’ noses as a way of greeting them.
  • Cute Mute: Star cannot speak and only makes cooing noises, but uses their star trail, face, and scarf to communicate.
  • Deuteragonist: They are important to the plot of the story.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": A star named "Star".
  • Expy: The way Star flies around sprinkling magic golden dust on things while never saying a word is very reminiscent of Tinker Bell.
  • Heart Symbol: Their face is shaped like a heart.
  • Let Me at Him!: They are not afraid to confront King Magnifico directly, so much so that other characters, mainly Asha, have to restrain them from doing so.
  • Living MacGuffin: King Magnifico sees Star as a threat to his rule and is determined to capture them, and protecting Star from him drives the second half of the film.
  • Nice Guy: Star is affectionate and helpful to just about everyone they meet.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Possibly one of the cutest characters that Disney has ever created.
  • Sentient Stars: They're a personification of the wishing star from other Disney films like Pinocchio, specifically.
  • Uplifted Animal: Star can give animals human-like intelligence and the ability to speak and does so quite liberally.

    Valentino
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/valentino_the_goat.png

Voiced by: Alan Tudyk (also vocal effects) Other languages

Asha's pet goat who magically gains the ability to talk from Star's magic.
  • Barefoot Cartoon Animal: He wears a full jumpsuit. Although a common trope for bipedal cartoon animals, Valentino is a regular quadrupedal pet goat kid.
  • Brainy Baby: Downplayed. He is not exactly a genius and does not even know how to count, but he still has a big vocabulary and sense of awareness for a three-week old goat kid.
  • Large Ham: When Valentino is granted his baritone voice by Star, he takes advantage of it by being as bombastic as possible.
  • Nice Guy: Even when he is given his speech power, Valentino is sweet, loyal and loving, even as bombastic as he gets. And all he wanted was to talk and for people to understand him.
  • No Indoor Voice: As a baby goat, he hasn't quite mastered volume control and shouts practically all of his lines even when trying to be quiet.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: In the tradition of Disney films, he fullfills this role to Asha.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Most of the film's humor comes from Valentino's antics.
  • Talking Animal: He's an animal. He talks. Thanks to Star's powers.
  • Tuft of Head Fur: He has of a tuft of fur on his head to give him a more distinct appearance.
  • Uplifted Animal: Star's magic grants him the ability to talk.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Despite being a baby goat, his voice post-wish is a deep, smooth baritone akin to a grown adult. This is delightfully lampshaded by him. Also lampshaded is the fact that his voice gets higher when he cries.

    King Magnifico
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/king_magnifico_wish_2.jpg

Voiced by: Chris Pine Other languages

The founder and ruler of Rosas. Magnifico is a powerful and charismatic sorcerer who has the ability to grant wishes for the citizens of Rosas and the rest of the world, but he may not be as noble or well-intentioned as he appears to be to all people.
  • 0% Approval Rating: His fate after he drops his affable facade and reveals his true malevolence to his subjects for them all to see, only to get sealed away, being hated by his whole kingdom, and his wife.
  • A God Am I: He believes his power and founding Rosas gives him the right and ability to "decide what everyone deserves" and right to be praised and worshipped for his generosity and superiority ("I put the I in omnipotent! ... Someone praise me for my benevolence!").
  • All Take and No Give: His percentage of granted wishes compared to the ones he hoards away is abysmally small, but he's so full of himself he thinks it's the opposite problem.
  • All There in the Manual: A Recipe For Adventure elaborates further on his motives as he angrily asks Star where they were when he was young and why it took Asha for them to meet and says that without Asha challenging him he'd still think he needed everyone's trust and the closest thing he could get to happiness was being near their wishes. Thanks to Asha, he learned he could take what he wanted.
  • Ambiguously Human: He said in his Villain Song that he got his genes from outer space, so it is unknown if he's actually human or from another world or if he was just exaggerating. His Vague Age as described below doesn't help.
  • And I Must Scream: Magnifico ends up imprisoned inside the crystal that was on top of his staff, and Queen Amaya orders a guard to have it hung up on a wall in the castle dungeon, meaning that Magnifico will likely be trapped forever.
  • The Archmage: Magnifico is revered as the most powerful mage across the lands, and the prospect of becoming his apprentice is a huge dream for many of his citizens. It is mentioned at the beginning that he spent a long time studying magic and honing his skills.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: He's the King of Rosas who grants the wishes of his people and claims that he only decides what wishes they deserve.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: As if losing everything he desperately wanted to keep, being trapped in a mirror, and even his own wife turning her back on him wasn't already enough, the problem he has with being hung up in the dungeon is that it smells.
  • Badass Boast: During his villain song
Magnifico: Peep the name, I'm magnificent / I put the I in omnipotent.
  • Bait the Dog:
    • Magnifico seems genuinely sympathetic towards Asha for losing someone she cared about, explaining how he lost his home to greedy thieves, and it made him determined to see to it that other people don't fall victim to the cruelty he suffered from. This leads him to show Asha the wishes as a show of trust, but when he refuses to grant Sabino's wish due to seeing it as a threat to his power and when Asha suggests he return the wishes he's not going to grant, he snaps at her and tells that only he has the right to decide what's best for everyone before spitefully giving her false hope in granting Sabino's wish and also denying her the opportunity to be his apprentice.
    • His verses in "At All Costs" sound achingly sincere as he marvels in the beauty of his kingdom's wishes and vows to keep them safe. Unfortunately, keeping the wishes prevents the people from granting them on their own or remembering what they wished for, and he later throws this out the window as he destroys wishes for extra power.
    • Magnifico has the people of Rosas give their deepest wishes to him - erasing it from their memories in the process - with the false hope that he might consider granting it to them at some point, basically defrauding them out of their greatest memories. No one has any idea whose wish he will grant or when, and most will spend years if not decades waiting for it to happen, if at all.
    • During the wishing ceremony after his argument with Asha, Magnifico builds up the hype by announcing that he'll finally be granting a wish to someone who's waited forever for it, clearly alluding to Sabino, Asha's hundred-year-old grandfather. Just when Sabino has gotten his hopes up, Magnifico instead calls on a random (and much younger) woman who simply wanted to be a dressmaker, completely crushing Asha's spirits and her family's.
  • Barbaric Bully: He conceals it with false charms, but it's quite clear by his introduction scene that alongside being a Jackass Genie, he's generally just a bully to everyone he meets and maintains the most transparent mask of actually caring what people have to say to him. The "barbaric" part comes in when he uses forbidden magic and threatens his subjects by chaining them down and lording over them in a truly psychopathic manner.
  • Became Their Own Antithesis: He founded the Kingdom of Rosas with the intent of it being a place of magic and wonder where wishes come true. By the end of the movie his fall into absolute wickedness completely undoes his original goals: he actively seeks to impose misery and hopelessness on his kingdom so that he keeps his power unchecked and unchallenged.
  • Berserk Button: Never tell him that anyone else deserves more. When Asha makes logical points about returning ungranted wishes back to the people, Magnifico becomes enraged.
  • Benevolent Mage Ruler: He is the founder of Rosas and is seen as a beloved leader that brings prosperity to the kingdom and grants wishes to the populace with his magic powers. Though it is implied he truly had benevolent intentions once, Magnifico goes on to subvert the trope and reveal himself as a tyrannical sorcerer that uses his spells to bring misery and despair to his people.
  • Beyond Redemption: To Queen Amaya's dismay, once Magnifico dabbles into forbidden magic, its grip on him is permanent. She mourns for the good he used to have, and only has contempt for the monster he has become.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He is beloved by the people of Rosas who view him as a valiant and noble leader, and when speaking with Asha, he presents a veneer of wisdom and kindness. The moment she questions him however, he drops his kingly facade showing the monstrous tyrant underneath.
  • Big Bad: Magnifico keeps most wishes of other people to himself and erases people's memories of them as he sees them not beneficial to him and declares himself to be the one who decides what everyone deserves. He plans to steal Star's Magic so he can do anything and gain more power as a result.
  • Broken Pedestal: Though seen for long as an Universally Beloved Leader, his fall into villainy ends up shattering the admiration he had from his people and even his closest associates. His wife, Queen Amaya, believes he no longer has any good in him; Asha ends up hating him after admiring his skills for a long time and Dahlia completely loses her crush for him.
  • The Caligula: Magnifico is a jealous, petty, and paranoid tyrant who only cares about having power for the sake of it, to the point that he'll keep his gullible subjects in the dark. When Asha learns the truth and points out he should be using his power to help his subjects, he tries to have her silenced so he could hold onto his power. His negligent rule of Rosas has brought about its slow decline that Asha must avert.
  • Canon Character All Along: A Freeze-Frame Bonus during his defeat implies that he is the identity of the magic mirror from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
  • Color Motif: He's primarily associated with the colors blue and white, symbolizing how the citizens of Rosas see him as benevolent and divine. But when he dabbles into forbidden magic after feeling threatened by Asha and the Star, his eyes and his magic turn green, symbolizing his fear and greed over wish-granting authority.
Asha: (Singing) "But now that it has happened, I don't regret it 'cause now I've seen him show his true colors in shades of green."
  • Classic Villain: Greed, Pride and Wrath. Magnifico's supposed to be an homage to the classic Disney villains of the past, and he too contrasts the heroine of the movie in several ways while remaining the most powerful obstacle in her journey. He even pretends to be her friend at first, while having his demise be a result of his own flaws.
  • Condescending Compassion: How he speaks to Asha during her first meeting with him gives the tone of this, since it's only a mask yet to be uncovered. While he listens to her worries, he doesn't actually "listen" and actually talks down to her the whole time. Similarly, when she brings up logical points for why she should be his apprentice, he casually dismisses her reasoning while pretending that he cares, until he eventually reveals his true self as a tyrant who hoards the wishes of Rosas' citizens for his self-benefit.
  • Control Freak: He only grants wishes that are seemingly only beneficial to him under the pretense of them being good for Rosas. He only grants few wishes at a time, erasing the wisher's memory, leaving potentially millions of ungranted wishes to be forgotten in his private chamber. When Asha calls him out on this, Magnifico angrily declares that he alone decides what his people deserve. When the thought of another magic user occurs to him (Star coming to the kingdom), it takes very little for him to turn to Forbidden Magic — something he claimed he would only turn to in dire emergencies — and snuff out the new "threat".
  • Corrupted Character Copy: To Yen Sid from The Sorcerer's Apprentice. He's an exceptionally powerful sorcerer with a Cosmic Motif to his design and holds a few superficial similarities to old Walter himself (whom Yen Sid was originally an Expy of). The movie even begins with him looking for an apprentice, a position Asha auditions for. But while Yen Sid was a stern, but wise fellow who acknowledged his apprentice’s actions for their good intentions, Magnifico is a power-hungry tyrant who only sees the worst in others, even making all other forms of magic in his kingdom illegal so that no one can challenge him.
  • Dark Is Evil: Magnifico has a book of forbidden spells, resorting to dark magic when feeling that his rule is threatened.
  • Despotism Justifies the Means: All he cares about is being in power and increasing his power over his kingdom by getting more magic. He tries to hide this behind a thin disguise of actually caring about his subjects.
  • The Dreaded: After he embraced the Forbidden Magic and his true colors were publicly revealed, Magnifico became feared by all the people of Rosas, including his wife, Amaya.
  • Drunk on the Dark Side: After opening the book of forbidden magic, Magnifico quickly becomes intoxicated by its power. When he spitefully crushes Sakina's wish in front of Asha, he absorbs the wish's energy and finds it enjoyable, which motivates him to absorb all the wishes and Star to become even more powerful than ever before, not caring that he has become a tyrant feared and hated by his subjects.
  • Duality Motif: The left side and right side of his tunic are opposite colors, symbolizing who he really is: A narcissistic and scheming sorcerer underneath his kind, welcoming golden boy image.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: The crux of his Villain Song, "This is the Thanks I Get?!", where Magnifico is complaining to himself about how he sees the citizens as ungrateful to him despite everything he does to maintain the kingdom and (supposedly) spoil them rotten.
Magnifico: (Singing) I let you live here for free and I don't even charge you rent
I clean up all your messes and I'm always there when you need to vent
I give and give and give and give, you'd think they'd all be content
And all I really want is just a little respect
And this is the thanks I get?!
  • Dystopia Justifies the Means: At the movie's climax, Magnifico decides that if the people of Rosas aren't going to mindlessly praise and thank him as their savior, then they should be subjected to a reign of vapid despair and fear where no wishes or dreams shall ever be granted while he lords over them like a tyrant enjoying their misery.
  • Entitled Bastard: He creates a system where the people rely on him and his magic for both protection and hope, yet he resents both his position and his people for it all the same, demanding praise and worship for the bare minimum of the promises he keeps. This is especially rich considering that he's universally beloved to the point of having statues and cookies of his likeness all over the kingdom.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Deconstructed. Magnifico was in a loving marriage with his wife Amaya, but she could not temper his desire for power. Amaya is hurt by what he does, and since neither will budge on ideals, he sees her as a threat and chains her.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Zigzagged. He doesn't understand why it's so important for people to keep the memories of their wishes, as he thinks nothing of robbing them of a very important part of themselves. At the climax he is taken aback by the sight of the townsfolk rising against him in song even through he is trying to force despair unto them with his spells. On the other hand, he is aware of the dangers of dabbling in the dark magic of the Forbidden Book- and tries to listen to his wife's advice.
  • Evil Feels Good: He destroys Sakina's wish as punishment for Asha giving Sabino his wish back, but didn't expect that broken wish would fuel his magic at the same time. He finds it enjoyable, admitting he didn't realize that physically crushing wishes makes him feel good. Afterwards, Magnifico begins crushing and absorbing wishes of people he didn't like, with the intent of turning his kingdom into a world of fear and misery with him on top.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: After taking in forbidden magic, he thinks it's funny to prank the people of Rosas at a gathering by preluding his entrance conjuring a giant pair of clawed hands with magic, laughing in their faces at their distressed reactions.
  • Evil Is Petty:
    • When he and Asha argue over the justification of keeping most of the wishes locked up in his tower, he goes out of his way to spite Asha at the wish ceremony by making her personally witness him taking the wishes of two new citizens, and then makes an ambiguous announcement that makes it seem like he will grant Sabino's wish, only to blindside them by granting the wish of a woman who wants to make the most beautiful dresses in the kingdom. He then walks up to her and blatantly tells her that not only did she not get the job as his apprentice, but that he will never grant her mother's wish or Sabino's, leaving them to a life of unfulfilled dreams they can't even remember. All because Asha disagreed with him.
    • The three wishes he absorbs to make his dark magic staff are from the three citizens who questioned whether their wishes were safe during his announcement of "the traitor." In their minds, they were simply looking for reassurance from the man they trusted, and in return, they had their hearts crushed because he arrogantly believed they were being ungrateful.
  • Evil Laugh: When using the power of the Forbidden Book he starts laughing evilly, in a way he never did before even though his villainy was already established.
  • Evil Sorcerer: What he becomes after dabbling in dark magic. The use of green as the color of his spells and his eyes when possessed, along with magic staff, are all call-backs to previous villainous sorcerers such as Maleficent and Jafar.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: He gives in to his wicked impulses and drops The Good King persona he had cultivated, openly using his evil sorcery to destroy and absorb his subjects' wishes to increase his magical power, and eventually absorbs Star and their magic into his rod, and enslaves all the people of Rosas, all the while maintaining his celebrated, perfect handsome face that had deceived so many into thinking he was a benevolent leader.
  • Fairy Devilmother: Or "Devilfather" as the case may be. While he presents himself as a benign granter of wishes, he only puts up a front as Hope Bringer and only selects wishes that would benefit him directly. When he starts using dark magic, his mask starts to slip and he actively starts manipulating the wishes to suit his needs, granting Simon's wish — to become a Knight in Shining Armorwith the added caveat of mind control-induced loyalty to him.
  • Fallen Hero: He was once a young man who wanted to protect the people from the cruel world he witnessed, giving them happy bliss by keeping their wishes safe and then occasionally grant some of them each year. But the years of prosperity and adorations from his citizens have gotten to his head, turning Magnifico into a narcissistic, paranoid tyrant who will do anything to keep control at any cost.
  • Fatal Flaw: His desire for control and to remain in power. Magnifico hoards the wishes and only grants those that could be beneficial to himself. He'll lash out at anyone who questions him, leading him personally spite those people. If anything he deems a threat to his power shows up, he will do anything to remain in power at the expense of anyone else, which leads him to embrace Forbidden Magic and take increasingly ruthless measures just to remain in control. This leads to the people of Rosas to turn their back on him after they see just how evil he is, bringing about the revolution he wanted to prevent so much.
  • Faux Affably Evil: After showing his true colors he still keeps an (unconvincing) façade of charm and politeness around Asha—and continues to present himself as a kind and noble ruler to Rosas. This is completely gone by the climax, however, as he openly displays his lust for power and contempt for his people.
  • Freudian Excuse: His childhood saw his family and home being destroyed by greedy thieves, and he swore to do anything to protect people from experiencing what he lived through. Unfortunately, this means he sees anything that even slightly loosens his influence over the people as an invitation of reliving his Dark and Troubled Past.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: He was once a child of an ordinary family whose home and land were ransacked by thieves. Magnifico eventually became a powerful sorcerer and founder of the prosperous Kingdom of Rosas- only to later become a cruel tyrant who would oppress his people with his magic.
  • Godhood Seeker: Magnifico makes it his mission to obtain Star's power to enhance his already powerful magic.
  • The Good King: The people of Rosas believe him to be this, and there may have been a time when he was worthy of the title. As Asha learns, however, years of him clinging to his power has corrupted him, averting the trope.
  • Good Powers, Bad People: Magnifico's wish granting magic is good in nature, but he uses it selfishly. Eventually devolves to Bad Powers, Bad People when he decides to use dark magic.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He despises the very thought of letting anyone else influence the people. When he sees Sabino's wish to become a musician playing before a crowd, he refuses to grant it because Sabino would then be drawing attention away from the king. Once Magnifico is made aware that a magical Star has landed thanks to the wish of Asha, he becomes insanely jealous and tries to steal the Star for himself. For bonus points, his eyes do literally turn green as he dabbles into forbidden magic to find a way to capture the Star.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: He had built Rosas as a prosperous kingdom to protect the people from the evils of the outside world, namely the greedy thieves that destroyed his original homeland. But his ego and paranoia lead him to see threats in even the most harmless of wishes, and he launches petty vendettas towards anyone who even questions his methods which leads him to discover that he could gain more power by destroying wishes. By the film's climax, he has become the very thing he swore to protect Rosas from, a greedy thief who steals wishes and torments their owners with fear and despair.
  • Hope Crusher: He literally crushes people's wishes and absorbs the energy to gain more power for himself, planning on crushing the hopes and dreams of everyone in the kingdom after capturing Star.
  • Hunk: While not outstandingly large, Magnifico is quite muscular. Is it any wonder why his subjects adore him for his handsomeness?
  • Hypocrite:
    • When the people of Rosas start questioning him, he has the nerve to accuse them of being ungrateful in spite of the fact that he spoils them rotten, when in reality, he's the only one getting benefits from granting their wishes which only suit his agenda. During this rant, he demonstrates how "helpful" he is by stealing Benito's clothes and giving them to someone who probably won't even need them and volunteering Henry to defend someone else's home.
    • He's made anyone other than him practicing magic a crime despite being a sorcerer himself, not wanting anyone to challenge him in terms of raw power. Even being tangentially related to someone else's magic — as is the case with Asha and Star — gets her branded a traitor.
    • Connected to both, a line in his villain song is "I'd like to see you try to do my job", treating it like a burden he had forced upon himself, rather than a power he deliberately sought and very carefully controls to make sure he will never be challenged.
  • I Control My Minions Through...:
    • A combination of Material Benefits and Mind Control. The sorcerer has the power to grant people's wishes, so people become citizens of Rosas to see their wishes come true. What they don't know is that Magnifico only grants wishes he believes will benefit him and his kingdom, leaving the vast majority holding out vain hope for a wish he will never grant (in his Villain Song, he mentions having granted fourteen wishes last year out of the hundreds or thousands he took), basically scamming them out of their greatest ambitions. The process of giving their wish to Magnifico also causes Laser-Guided Amnesia so no one can remember what they wish for, meaning they can't try and make their own dreams come true, making them more dependent on Magnifico's supposed generosity.
    • There's also complacency involved. He fancies himself as a benevolent king who makes his subjects happy by granting them their hearts' desires, when in reality, he's just making them complacent and ignorant, leading them to view their ruler as some kind of god for them to depend on to achieve success.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Magnifico has a pair of beautiful and striking blue eyes, which take on a darker meaning after he shows his true colors.
  • Ignorance Is Bliss: How he justifies hoarding people's wishes. To him, it's not granting wishes that matters for his kingdom. It's keeping people blissfully happy, ignorant of what they really wanted because to Magnifico, their wishes would crush their spirits once they realize they can't fulfill it themselves.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Underneath that smug, handsome facade of a king is a deeply insecure man afraid of not being in control, even when reassured by the adorations of his subjects. His ego is so frail that even the most mundane questions about his actions set him off on a long-winded rant of how everyone is ungrateful for his hard work.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: He's basically an animated Chris Pine, albeit as a Silver Fox.
  • I Should Have Done This Years Ago: He doesn't realize that the wishes he protected could give him more magic until he crushes one to punish Sakina for Asha's actions. Upon this discovery, Magnifico gleefully abandons his benevolent facade and starts crushing more and more wishes to get more power, intending to rule through fear and despair.
Magnifico: Ooh... What's this? What a gift! All this time, I've protected the wishes not knowing... the power they yield! I feel as if I can do... anything!
  • It's All About Me: Magnifico is extremely narcissistic and selfish, and believes that he alone should decide what wishes are worth granting or not. His reasoning? He only grants wishes based on how they would benefit him rather than the people who wished them in the first place.
  • Jackass Genie: He has the power to grant anyone's wish... but he only picks the ones that are of no threat to him (even in vague or abstract ways) or in ways that benefit him and his hold over the Kingdom. When he starts using forbidden magic, he starts actively manipulating wishes to suit his needs, brainwashing Simon into loyalty when he grants his wish to make him into a knight.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • When someone gives their wish to him, he magically erases their memory. While he frames it as people not having to deal with their worries, Asha is completely horrified by his callousness.
    • While he had already decided on his own not to grant Sabino's wish, after Asha disagrees with him, Magnifico also makes a point to say that he'll never grant any of her family's wishes, purely to spite Asha for daring to talk back to him.
    • To punish Asha for "stealing" from him, he tracks her down to her home and crushes her mother Sakina's wish right in front of her out of sheer cruelty.
    • After having captured both Star and Asha, he traps Star in his staff right in front of Asha to absorb its magic just for challenging him.
  • Kick the Morality Pet: After embracing the forbidden magic, he becomes increasingly hostile to his own wife, Amaya, thinking she may betray him. By the film's climax, he uses his newfound magic to directly attack Amaya when she talks back to him.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Once he embraces the forbidden magic, Magnifico begins seriously darkening the movie. By the climax, he nearly succeeds in turning Rosas into a hellish dystopia, deliberately robbing the setting of all its former vibrancy and light-heartedness.
  • Knight Templar: Even as he's overtaking his kingdom with forbidden magic, Magnifico makes the claim that he's the one who's been betrayed. When his wife calls out that he's the real traitor, he responds by trying to silence her.
  • Lack of Empathy: When a disgusted Asha points out that making people forget their wishes is like robbing them of the most beautiful part of themselves and how unfair it is for them, Magnifico coldly ignores her completely.
  • Large and in Charge: He is shown to be the tallest person in the kingdom, and just happens to be their ruler.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Anyone who gives their wish to him is given this in return so they can't remember what they wished for.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Magnifico is shown to be an extremely vain man, covering his palace and kingdom with statues and paintings of himself, even having Dahlia bake him cookies in the shape of his face, and often admiring and even speaking to his own reflection in his many mirrors. He's ultimately defeated by being trapped inside the glass tip of his staff, essentially trapping him in a one-sided mirror where he's unable to ever see his reflection again, which Queen Amaya Lampshades.
Queen Amaya: Well, you do love mirrors.
  • Light Is Not Good: The sorcerer king appears as a good king in white, but underneath has selfish and malevolent reasons.
  • Madness Mantra: The chorus of his Villain Song is basically this in song form.
King Magnifico: And this is the thanks I get? This is the thanks I get? This is the thanks I get?
  • Malicious Slander: He calls Asha a traitor for "betraying the kingdom" and threatens his kingdom to believe she's using the power of Star's magic to destroy it... while planning to do exactly that himself.
  • Meaningful Name: Magnifico means "magnificent" in languages such as Spanish and Portuguese and "grandious" in Latin. And indeed, the man himself is a very powerful mage and adored ruler. However, the Latin term can also designate someone that thinks himself superior to others, which also describes Magnifico very well.
  • Might Makes Right: Magnifico's character in a nutshell. He believes that being the ruler of his kingdom means he can do whatever he wants, and that he's the only one who can rule over it. When he uses forbidden magic and actually becomes a real tyrant, he only earns the ire of his subjects.
  • More than Mind Control: While it is stated in the grimoire that the dark magic is controlling him, it's very clear he was just as much being seduced by the idea of using forbidden magic long before giving into it, in a bid to cling to his power.
  • Motive Decay: He truly does fear that the kingdom of Rosas will fall into chaos if another magic user arrives or if one of his subjects stages a revolt against him, destroying the utopia he worked so hard to build for his people. But over time, his fear becomes self-centered around himself as he dabbles into forbidden magic and soon, he decides that being king is more important than anything else. By the end of the film, he's eager to impose a reign of despair and suffering upon his kingdom just so nobody could challenge him again.
  • Mr. Alt Disney: He's a charismatic man who single-handedly created a "Magic Kingdom" and has built a reputation as a man who brings people's fantasies to life in spite of grim reality. Considering Wish was made in celebration of the company's 100 year anniversary, this could have been the intent. Like many other takes on this trope, he is a villainous version of the archetype, whose power and acclaim go hand-in-hand with his greed and ambition.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Magnifico is quite handsome, and is described as Rosas' "most handsomest, most beloved sorcerer king".
King Magnifico: You're right. I am a handsome king.
  • Narcissist: The Sorcerer King is quite vain, as he agreed with his wife that he is a handsome king, only focusing on the "handsome" aspect of Amaya's words, and not the "beloved".
    • This is also proven by his declaration that only he decides what the people of his kingdom deserve.
    • When refusing to grant Sabino's wish, he casually insults Asha by telling her she's young and doesn't know anything. He refused to grant said wish because he feared Sabino's musical passion would detract Rosas' attention from their ruler, using the flimsy excuse that said passion could incite riots and rebellion.
    • Not to mention that he only grants wishes that will benefit him under the pretense of them being good for the kingdom and under his protection.
  • Near-Villain Victory: As he declares himself, he succeeds in taking total control over Rosas in the climax with forbidden magic, and the citizens being chained down prevents them from fighting back against him by conventional means. The citizens have to use the power of singing in order to break free and release Star from Magnifico's staff, reversing the effects of his tyranny and trapping him in the staff.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: While he is motivated primarily by his lust for power, the suffering he endured in his past can explain some of his actions. His fear of having his home and land ravaged by thieves again may explain why he is so fearful of Sabino's wish to inspire future generations- and believes it can be used to cause rebellions against him.
  • Never My Fault: He resents his people for being dependent on him and his magic, but he's the one who made such a system in the first place.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Magnifico claims that he's protecting the wishes of Rosas and erasing them from the memories of their owners for noble reasons; ensuring that his people don't have their hearts broken in pursuit of unattainable dreams, and that especially dangerous wishes are not fulfilled. However, in truth he's merely hogging the wishes for himself and denying the vast majority of his subjects the chance to ever realize their dreams for fear that they might somehow threaten his rule. When he gets hold of Star's power, he decides to drop his well-intentioned facade entirely, revealing how gleefully ready he is to condemn his people to complete, inescapable despair just to secure his control over them.
  • The Paranoiac: He refuses to grant certain wishes on the grounds that they might end up threatening his rule over Rosas. Overall, he is a very controlling king who holds grudges against those who question him in any way. True to form, his intense cruelty towards others ends up creating the problems he tries so hard to avoid.
  • Playing the Victim Card: When Magnifico ends up trapped in the crystal at the top of his staff, he shamelessly begs and demands Amaya to free him and acts like the people of Rosas have trapped him unjustly. Amaya refuses to help him and instead orders a guard to hang the crystal on the wall of the dungeon.
  • Power Parasite: When he spitefully crushes Sakina's wish to hurt Asha, he realizes he can gain power from absorbing wishes and starts to do so, as well as using them to fuel his spells.
  • Proud Beauty: He's handsome and he knows it. His villain song opens with the fact of how "hard" it is that he's so good looking.
Magnifico: I can't help it, if mirrors love my face,
It's genetics! Yeah, I got these genes from outer space!
  • Psychopathic Manchild: He carries himself with a more composed, sophisticated air befitting a King, but is really just a spoiled brat who thinks he deserves to rule Rosas simply because he thinks he should, and that's not even getting into how much of a Sore Loser he is when things stop going his way for once.
  • Psychological Projection: His Villain Song shows he accuses others of displaying his own flaws, as he lambasts the populace for only taking from him while giving nothing in return when it's clearly the other way around.
  • Rags to Royalty: Magnifico was originally a child from an unremarkable place whose family was presumably killed when thieves raided his land. He later becomes the founder and king to Rosas.
  • Revisiting the Roots: The producers explained that Magnifico was designed to invoke the nostalgia of the classical Disney villains that came before him.
  • Satanic Archetype: Magnifico is a deal maker who promises to grant the wishes of his subjects when they hand over their wish (a part of their soul) to him in a ceremony held when they turn 18, but instead hogs all the wishes out of paranoia that any one wish would endanger his rule. Much like how Satan is described as an angel of light, Magnifico wears bright clothes. His Villain Song even has him describing how he got his genes from outer space again reinforcing his celestial connections with Lucifer.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Supernatural Powers!: He's clearly on a power trip over his ability to grant wishes, only deciding to grant the wishes that benefit him personally.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: His ultimate fate, with the added insult of his own wife being able to release him but choosing to keep him imprisoned indefinitely.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: He hoards the wishes of the people of Rosas and is selective about which one he grants because he believes certain wishes will pose a potential threat to his power. He refuses to grant Sabino's wish at Asha's request because he believes his wish could inspire to people to overthrow him, and spitefully gives Asha false hope that it will be granted just for questioning him and suggesting that he return the wishes he doesn't plan to grant. When Star makes his appearance and people start questioning their king because they wanted reassurance from someone they see as their protector, Magnifico decides to embrace the Forbidden Magic believing the people are being ungrateful to him, even going so far as to crush the wishes of people who questioned him or are connected to Asha out of spite. His actions lead to Amaya and the people of Rosas to turn on him after seeing just how evil and tyrannical he's become, bringing about the revolution he wanted to prevent so much, to the point they make no attempt to free him from the crystal he's trapped in.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: He displays all of them, though some in a greater extent than the others:
    • Pride: He is extremely narcissistic and conceited and believes he alone can measure the worth of a wish. He doesn't take kindly to being questioned.
    • Envy: He resents Star and wants to have their power to himself. Also, he refuses to grant Sabino's wish because he cannot stand someone other than him influencing the people.
    • Wrath: He becomes very enraged when his authority over the people's wishes gets challenged by Asha, humiliating her in response. As the people start to question his handling of the wishes, he is quick to yell at the crowd to be quiet and retreat to his castle.
    • Lust: He seeks even greater power than he already has, and does anything to get it. Even his faithful and loving wife fails to dissuade him from being tempted by the Forbidden Book.
    • Gluttony: He hoards people's wishes and grants a minuscule amount of them overall, having the nerve to call 14 of them a high percent.
    • Greed: Similar to Gluttony, he is motivated by ambition and desire of becoming even more powerful than he already is. As such, he makes very little effort to resist the temptations of the Forbidden Book.
    • Sloth: Though he vigorously studied magic and created a prosperous kingdom, he wants to keep its people dependent on his power instead of truly earning their adoration through honest means. In his Villain Song he mentions volunteering someone else to help people in need rather than doing it himself.
  • Silver Fox: His gray hair suggests he's past his prime, but he barely looks a day over 40.
  • Skewed Priorities: When Amaya orders a guard to hang the crystal Magnifico is trapped in on the wall of the dungeon, Magnifico begs for anything but that because the dungeon smells bad, as if that’s the worst part about it.
  • Slowly Slipping Into Evil: At the start of the film, Magnifico is a smug Control Freak of a king, but can be seen as misguided in his methods of wish granting since he has standards with magic usage. But then he starts collectively punishing Asha's family for the crime of Asha "questioning" him in the most pettiness of manners, and it only gets worse from here. As more and more of his power and authority gets challenged, Magnifico begins crossing more and more lines he swore to his wife he would never do. Eventually, it culminates into him becoming a crazed, power-hungry tyrant who wants to steal wishes to fuel his magic and make everyone suffer in the process.
  • Smug Smiler: Magnifico is incredibly self-satisfied, with his constant smirking, as he knows he can do anything and get away with it.
  • The Sociopath: Has the warning cards: he is a manipulative ruler who has superficial charm and a bloated sense of self-worth and is willing to sink to his lowest when he feels that his power is being threatened. A Recipe for Adventure further adds that he is unable to feel happiness; the closest he gets is being among the kingdom's wishes.
  • Sorcerous Overlord: King Magnifico is the tyrant ruler of Rosas who wields untold magic—the ability to grant wishes.
  • Sore Loser: He really doesn’t take it well when he’s backed into a corner and is close to being defeated.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: How he views his subjects and all those who come to Rosas to have their wishes granted, viewing them as cowards who know the journey is too hard and unfair for them to try themselves, leaving them dependent on him to get anywhere in life. But, that also means they can’t do scratch to him, and can’t be a threat to him…until they are.
  • Taking Advantage of Generosity: Outlined in his villain song, as he thinks this is the problem with his position as king, seeing himself as giving everything he has to the ungrateful people of Rosas.
I give and give and give and give
You'd think they'd all be content...
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Let's see. At least 6'4", tanned skin, and is quite a youthful-looking Silver Fox? Yep, fits the bill to a "T".
  • Token Evil Teammate: In a sense, he is this to Rosas as a whole, as while the rest see King Magnifico as their ally, he is only taking their wishes and refusing to either grant them or return them because he fears his kingdom will be destroyed if he even considers the idea of actually granting any of them, if they don't benefit him personally. He is also the only unambiguously evil citizen and character in the film, besides Simon, who is on the side of good before he has a Face–Heel Turn and becomes Magnifico's assistant by force.
  • Tragic Hero: He is a powerful king who once genuinely wanted to keep people safe and happy from the cruel reality and is beloved by all his subjects. But his narcissism and paranoia consume him to the point he's willing to do anything to remain in control over his kingdom including alienating his beloved wife and dabbling into forbidden magic. His flaws eventually turn him into a megalomaniacal tyrant and a classic Disney villain Hated by All.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: How he is at the beginning of the movie. One of his subjects had his wishes denied for over eighty years, and that didn't bend the faith in him as a king.
  • Vague Age: He is said to have built Rosas an unspecified number of years ago, and that his subjects give their wishes to him at the age of 18. However, one of his, Sabino, is 100 years old, and his wife, Queen Amaya, looks somewhat younger than him while Magnifico himself looks to be his mid-to-late 40s at the most.
  • Villain in a White Suit: His uniform is a ghostly off-white with blue and grey accents to make him look more luxurious. Even his wife color-coordinates in the same hues.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When the citizens start asking him about the contradictions in his story, their wishes' safety and whether another wishing ceremony will commence, Magnifico starts to lose his cool and storms off to his study room ranting, in a Villain Song no less, of how his subjects are ungrateful and want more from him. It ends with him finally taking out the book of forbidden magic to deal with the Star, despite swearing to his wife that he would never do this.
  • Villain Song: Befitting someone meant to hearken back to classic villains, he naturally gets his own song with "This Is The Thanks I Get?!".
  • Villains Want Mercy: After being sealed in his staff crystal, he begs Queen Amaya to free him. Amaya says no to his face, which causes the former king to whimper before ranting of how ungrateful she is. Then he resorts to begging to Amaya again when he hears that his crystal prison going to be hanged in the dungeon, as he hates the smell of the place.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: For a long time he has perfectly masked his true intentions and projected the image of a kind and beloved king. Even when denying to grant the wishes of certain citizens for decades, Magnifico didn't lose their respect and adoration. As such, he is able to convince his people that Asha is a traitor, though his lies are eventually revealed.
  • Wants a Prize for Basic Decency: He thinks that he deserves all the praise from his people as he provides for them, even though is his responsibility as a king to do so. His Villain Song "This Is The Thanks I Get?!" drives this to the point.
  • Weak-Willed: Though he claimed he would only used the Forbidden Book in the case of dire emergencies, the mere presence of Star was enough to make him cross that line. As such, his lust for power at all costs allowed him to easily give in to his temptations- which gets him completely dominated by the book's dark magic.
  • What You Are in the Dark: After getting angered by so many people questioning him, Magnifico returns to his study and opens the forbidden Book of Spells without hesitation despite promising Amaya he wouldn’t do so. While he is unaware that Asha, Valentino, and Star (the cause of the light he feels threatened by) are hiding in his study and witness what he’s done, this scene shows that he will do anything to secure his power and status if he feels slighted.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: He has silver hair and is as cruel and petty as can be.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: King Magnifico is the classic example of how power corrupts. He was given the power to grant wishes, but he will only grant those that benefit only him. Any wishes he chooses not to grant can be used to increase his magic a hundredfold, and it comes at the cost of his sanity.
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • He has no problem attempting to hurt Asha when she started to challenge him, eventually torturing her with magic in front of the kingdom.
    • He painfully brainwashed Simon after he granted his wish despite having promised.
    • As Magnifico puts his entire kingdom in magical chains, we specifically see a scared little girl being restrained from hugging her mother.

A strong giant with an even bigger heart, Simon dreams of being a knight for King Magnifico but has had difficulties with staying awake ever since he gave his wish away a few months ago.

  • All There in the Manual: A Recipe for Adventure reveals that, before he gave his wish away, Simon was very active, loved horseback riding and being outdoors, and used his strength to help his friends.

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: After ratting out Asha to King Magnifico, his wish of being a warrior is granted, but he is also brainwashed into being Magnifico's lackey and ratting out the rest of the Teens. His eyes also start glowing green to reflect the crazed state he's in.
  • Deal with the Devil: King Magnifico decreed whoever identifies the traitor shall get their wish granted. Simon took the deal and ratted Asha out.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The negative effects of Magnifico taking people's wishes is very pronounced with him, as without his he became emotionally dull and prone to sleeping in a way reminiscent of depression.

The cynical member of the Teens, Gabo is sarcastic and curt, but hides a hidden heart of gold behind his cynical exterior. He works in the castle kitchen.
  • Butt-Monkey: His grumpy attitude is occasionally justified by him suffering bad luck, like Safi sneezing on a cookie he was going to eat or a giant chicken laying an egg on him.
  • The Cynic: He thinks the worst of everything though only in a way to keep his friends safe and, more importantly, rational. After Asha is framed and she and her family leave, Gabo immediately assumes that she killed Sakina and Sabino.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite being an abrasive cynic who sees Asha having Star as potential trouble, he still goes out of his way to keep Star a secret, and he’s outraged when it turns out that Simon sold out Asha and Star to the king.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite being sarcastic and cynical, he has a hidden heart of gold as he cares about his friends such as keeping Star a secret for Asha from the king.
  • The Napoleon: Short and very abrasive and sour.
  • Perpetual Frowner: In contrast to Hal, who's always smiling, Gabo is always frowning, though more for cautious in an effort to keep his friends safe and in check than pure jerkassery.

Rosas

    Queen Amaya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wish_queen_amaya.jpg

Voiced by: Angelique Cabral Other languages

King Magnifico's wife and the queen of Rosas. She is kind and caring towards both Asha and her people, often serving to rein in her husband.
  • All There in the Manual: A Recipe For Adventure reveals her wish, which was to serve the people of Rosas.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: She's as beautiful as Magnifico is handsome, however unlike her husband's superficial beauty, Amaya is just as beautiful on the inside, being a kind and generous Queen, who truly loves her people and her kingdom.
  • The Dog Bites Back: By the film's climax, Magnifico threatens her and uses his newfound magic to directly attack and chain Amaya when she talks back to him. When he then orders her to release him in the denouement, Amaya cheerfully tells him no and sends him to the dungeons.
  • Happily Married: Amaya was happy in her marriage with Magnifico, and she was in love with him. His wanton desire for power changed things, and she's completely heartbroken and feels like she doesn’t know him anymore.
  • The High Queen: She helped Magnifico build Rosas as a prosperous kingdom where dreams can come true and commands enough authority to even rein in her husband whenever he starts feeling paranoid. After Magnifico is imprisoned in his staff, she becomes the sole ruler of Rosas, and is a kind, fair ruler.
  • Love Hurts: What hurts her the most about Magnifico falling off the deep end was that she loved him, and it was too much for her to bear.
  • The Matchmaker: Platonic variant. In the denouement, she's seen encouraging the woman who wished to fly to work with a man who wishes to build a flying machine; suggesting that she's taken to grouping up people whose wishes could synergize well so they can work towards them together.
  • Morality Pet: She is the only person that Magnifico cares about other than himself, to the point where she's able to successfully talk him down the first time he considers dipping into the forbidden magic. Unfortunately, once Magnifico starts using said magic against her wishes, her influence over her husband wanes and Magnifico starts treating her as a threat to his goals.
  • Neutral No Longer: She initially stands by and does little as her husband's actions and motives get more and more cruel, before joining Asha's rebellion.
  • Redeeming Replacement: Amaya gets promoted from consort to ruler after her husband is overthrown, and she rules with a kind, fair hand.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: She is almost as popular as her husband, being seen as a gracious and kind Queen, however unlike Magnifico, Amaya is genuinely devoted to the welfare of the people of Rosas. After the defeat of her maniacal husband, all her people joyfully declare to Amaya "Long Live the Queen".
  • Vague Age: She was said to have founded Rosas alongside her husband, who is also hit with this. While Magnifico appears to be in his mid-to-late 40s in spite of his gray hair, whereas Amaya looks to be in her mid-to-late 30s without any sign of graying.

Asha's 100 year old grandfather on her father's side, who has been waiting for King Magnifico to grant his wish for years since he asked when he was his granddaughter's age.
  • Allegorical Character: He's a 100-year-old man whose wish is to be an entertainer and influence future generations, which makes him an allegory for the 100-year-old Walt Disney Company.
  • Cool Old Guy: Once he's got his wish back, he's an infectiously spirited old-timer who can easily row a boat at 100 years of age.
  • Duality Motif: His cape and tunic are opposite colors.
  • Ignorance Is Bliss: Sabino snaps at Asha for offering to tell him the wish he gave to Magnifico and consequently had wiped from his memory. Since Magnifico has vowed never to grant this wish, Sabino believes hearing what it is will only lead to heartbreak. Eventually Subverted, as once Asha brings back his wish, he's finds it beautiful and, despite acknowledging that he might not accomplish it in his remaining lifetime, is delighted to have the chance to try.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: He looks almost identical to Victor Garber, only shorter and with a beard.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: His son died of an unspecified illness five years ago.
  • Street Musician: His wish to be a street musician, playing with his lute to passing crowds of Rosas. It's the most mundane and humble wish one could ever have, which highlights how awful of a Control Freak King Magnifico is when he claims that Sabino's wish could incite riots and mobs against Rosas.
  • Tragic Dream: By giving his wish to King Magnifico he all but ensured his wish to inspire people would never be granted, and he's waited 82 years. Asha's quest to help him drives much of the initial plot.
