Now you've seen all of the characters that are the main antagonists and protagonists for this series. Let's now take a look at the characters that make up Lelouch's main support group: the Gotei 13.
Please keep in mind that all characters, alive or dead, are listed here if their final or current affiliation makes them part of the Gotei if they are not a Post Humous Character. Also because of the rapid changes to positions and what-not this list is now in order of Western Style naming rather than by squad.Keep in mind that these are only tropes NOT shown in the main series. For details on these characters not shown here go to these pages here and here.
Feel free to eat your lunch while you read
Ashido Kano
A veteran Soul Reaper who was trapped in the Menos Forest for over three centuries. He was the 4th seat of Lelouch's original Captain, Akari Mari. He is encountered by Hitsugaya and Momo during a trip into the Menos Forest during the Lelouch and the Law arc and returns with them and is welcomed back to the Gotei with very little fuss. Considering the man spent a long time fighting for his life against a shit ton of menos and other hollows and was never actually declared deceased it's easy to understand that his return is easier to recognize and accept for the Central Forty Six than say Homura Yuna. He is made as Shunsui's vice-captain as it is the only senior officer position open at the time of his return. His Zanpakuto is Meiyo Okami (Honorable Wolf)- Absurdly Sharp Blade: His Shikai
- Ascended Extra
- Backstory of the Day: The Beach episode; he enjoys Surfing, dude! Mari taught him how; she's still better though.
- By the Power of Grayskull!: 'Defend the pack, Meiyo Okami'; it was originally 'Duel, Meiyo Okami'.
- Iaijutsu Practitioner: Naomi says she learned it from him, so obviously he’s this too.
- Old Soldier: Considering the hell he's probably been through and isn't the least bit overwhelmed by everything or exemplifying the traits of a Shell-Shocked Veteran he definitely qualifies here. Of course he seems a lot softer of an individual than the usual portrayal of this trope.
- Ship Tease: Lelouch tries to set him up with Yuna after she breaks up with him, due to their shared pasts with Mari, despite Ashido being a lot older than Yuna, though it's unlikely if anything comes of it given the lack of any mention of them interacting post Pursuit Of The Truth. Likely they're Just Friends. Naomi is also a candidate.
- Zen Survivor
Chief Prosecutor Byakuya Kuchiki
Captain of Squad 6 and head of the famous Kuchiki clan, but the first time we see Byakuya he is but a child and Lelouch actually teaches him a private lesson in Kido, under Yoruichi's supervision. As a child, Lelouch was something of an idol to him. As an adult, he continues to be one of Lelouch's strongest supporters.- Battle Couple: With his wife Hisana. And it shows with their Synergy Strike.
- Berserk Button: In canon this is listed as "Emotion Showing Button" with good reason. In Soul Chess this trope is played much more direct when Talbumosuke cuts down Hisana. Byakuya completely loses it
- Break the Cutie: Took Sojun's death very badly; it does serve as the catalyst for his and Hisana's Relationship Upgrade.
- Broken Pedestal: Lelouch, post Zero Requiem.
- Happily Married: To Hisana, and is now a father of twins Kyo and Isao.
- Incredibly Lame Pun: After Hisana uses her Chant of Light against Koga Byakuya tells her "that was brilliant".
- Kill the Ones You Love: In order to get on Muramasa’s good side he has to kill his children, but it was a case of Faking the Dead.
- Papa Wolf: Guaranteed as of ch 94. And shown in chapter 123. See Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right! below
- Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Uses Forbidden kido to protect his children by using spatial displacement kido (the same type that got Tessai in trouble).Byakuya: In times of crisis some laws have to be broken
- The Comically Serious: Still stuck in the mud, but a more rounded individual than in canon, leading to moments of unintentional hilarity.
- Used to Be a Sweet Kid: then shit happened.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Hisana really lays into him for defecting to Muramasa. It's not like she knows it's an act. It would get worse.
- [[spoiler: She follows up on it later when she realizes its all an act and asked Byakuya why he couldn't trust her.
- You Remind Me of X: Lelouch tells Byakuya he reminds him of Suzaku.
Chojiro Sasakibe
Yamamoto's Vice-captain. Dies in chapter 104 due to a fever and the lack of attention paid to him in-universe. Though it was helped by Yolanda killing his Zanpakuto at Gonryomaru's request- Alternate Universe Reed Richards Is Awesome: There's an omake called this and it does a damn good job of making an example of this trope; he has a Bankai which transforms him into Thor.
- Big Sleep
- Mercy Kill: At his Zanpakuto's request
Captain-Commander Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto
Head Captain of the Gotei 13. His bankai is Ryujin Jakka Mugen Ikari. He was the FIRST Shinigami to unlock Bankai. He is killed by Aizen and Nyra.- Back from the Dead: Subverted. It’s the same deal as Mari, but he’s around just long enough to lay a serious smackdown of payback on Aizen. See Big Damn Heroes below.
- Big Damn Heroes: Even Death cannot stop him from helping out Lelouch in the Final Part of Aizen's Revenge arc.
- Dying Moment of Awesome: His battle with Nyra and Aizen.
- Heal It With Fire: During his battle with Hollow Ichigo Yamamoto clasps a wound on his arm and sears it closed.
- Killed Off for Real: HOLY SHIT!
- Slashed Throat: Courtsey of Aizen, though only after Nyra had done all the work.
- Laser Blade: Core form
- Let's Get Dangerous!: Bankai.
- Oh, Crap!: Talbumosuke thinks that the trick to using against Komamura's Bankai will also work against Yamomoto's. Long story short, it doesn't.
- Passing the Torch: To Unohana to make her Squad One Captaincy official.
- Power Gives You Wings: His Bankai's ultimate form
- Reasonable Authority Figure: Much more so than in canon.
- Weredragon: Ryujin Jakka’s true form is a gigantic dragon.
- Walking Wasteland: Which is why he refuses to use Zanka No Tachi after the damage it did while fighting Rita.
Gin Ichimaru
Though originally a "friend" of Lelouch's Gin is still the Magnificent Bastard Wild Card everyone knows him to be. Even after Talbumosuke's death, when Lelouch convinces the Central Forty Six to consider Gin a Fake Defector and Gin is reinstated into the Gotei as the Vice-captain of Squad 9 to replace Hisagi he remains this way until the end of Aizen's Revenge when he becomes Captain of Squad 12. Engaged to Rangiku- Black Comedy Rape: Invoked in the omake chapter 74.03 (the omake for ch 82)
- Curb-Stomp Battle: Easily defeats his own Zanpakuto in the Reapers and Heralds arc.
- Evil Counterpart: To Lelouch. Though he’s not quite as intelligent the fact that Hisana considers him to be the best the Gotei has at coming up with a plan during the Reapers and Heralds arc and considering Gin’s other actions it definitely qualifies him for this.
- Fake Defector: Debatable as to whether or not Gin himself is one, but Lelouch makes him out to be one to the Central Forty Six. But then again he really does care about Rangiku, so it is possible he is entirely this. He's lucky Lelouch spoke in his defense.
- Good Is Not Nice: Good in only the sense of the fact that he’s once again affiliated with the Soul Society. Rangiku calls him out on it.
- Guile Hero: Very debatable on the "hero" aspect but he is very intelligent. He continues the research on Lelouch's Sorting Algorithm of Hollows to apply it on menos and gillians.
- Heroic Comedic Sociopath: Gin might be a psycho, but he's quite comical at times.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: In chapter 61 he says that if he doesn't make it, he wants Lelouch to take care of Rangiku.
- Karma Houdini: Gin isn’t getting any retribution, verbal or otherwise, for killing Hachigen. The Soul Society, of course, since Hachigen is just an extra hand and was written off in the records as KIA, will not lay a hand on him, but it’s amazing that Shinji or one of the other Visoreds haven’t given Lelouch a good scolding.
- It’s possible they don’t know that he was set loose as Tosen’s replacement Vice-captain for Hisagi
- Confirmed in the Aizen's Revenge arc. Kensei strings him up by his neck and slams him into the ceiling for what he is. He would've killed him but Yuna, of all people, tells him they still need Gin alive for all of his magnificent bastardry.
- It’s possible they don’t know that he was set loose as Tosen’s replacement Vice-captain for Hisagi
- Out-Gambitted: He comes up with a cunning plan during the Reapers and Heralds arc, and it is a very good one at that. Unfortunately Eien Tamashi and Lelouch were one step ahead of that.
- Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: Gin flat out says the key phrase “I grew up” to his Zanpakuto
- Take That!: Invoked by the author at what Gin did to Aizen in canon replicated with Talbumosuke here, only it works.
- Unscrupulous Hero: With definite shades of Nominal Hero.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Rangiku gives him a big one, including slapping him. Gin even denotes that he’d prefer she’d have Run him through with Haineko coming from a man who enjoys psychological torture and killed Hachigen in cold blood in Soul Chess, not to mention all of his actions in canon, this says something.
Hisana Kuchiki
Byakuya's wife and Rukia's older sister. She is first seen in the series as a student in one of Lelouch's Kido classes alongside Gin and Byakuya. Before she contracts a disease that would otherwise be fatal to her Lelouch reunites her with Rukia and Hisana continues to live rising higher and higher in rank. Currently she is the Captain of Squad 3. She was revealed to be pregnant just before going for the second battle and in one week after Hitsugaya's release from prison, she gave birth to twins Kyo and Isao. Her Zanpakuto is called Kaze no Irokoe. Her Bankai is called Saigo no Chu no Kaze no Irokoe- Action Mom: As of chapter 94
- A Day in the Limelight: Reapers & Heralds
- Animal Motifs: A horned owl. While in Bankai.
- Ascended Extra
- Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Basically strongarms her way to becoming acting Sotaicho during the Zanpakto Rebellion; Yama is missing, Unohana incapacitated, and Shunsui and Ukitake unwilling.
- Battle Couple: With her husband Byakuya. And it shows with their Synergy Strike.
- Berserk Button: A good way to get your ass kicked is to harm or threaten Rukia.
- Big Good: Assumes this role during the Reapers and Heralds arc because Yamamoto, Byakuya and Lelouch are missing and the senior captains don’t seem to want to step up.
- Brown Note: A notable effect of her Bankai.
- By the Power of Grayskull!: 'Sing, Kaze no Irokoe' and 'Bankai: Saigo no Chu no Kaze no Irokoe'
- Character Development: Hisana gets a good amount over the course of the series with regards to her relationship with Rukia. First she starts by smothering Rukia with her affection and trying to balance her affection towards Rukia and Byakuya. During the Eye of the Storm arc she realizes her mistake and simply becomes protective of Rukia but its during the training arc when the marriage between Rukia and Kaien is finalized that Hisana ultimately realizes that she has to let Rukia grow up and be her own person.
- Driven to Suicide: Almost. Isane stopped her just in the nick of time
- Feminine Women Can Cook
- Happily Married: To Byakuya
- Heroic BSoD: Has one when she finds out Kyo and Isao are dead
- Though it turns out they’re perfectly fine and Hisana snaps out of it after almost being Driven to Suicide
- Knight Templar Big Sister.
- Lady of War: Hisana is very graceful in battle, much like her husband compared to others like Unohana Kendra and Yolanda and Naomi.
- Mama Bear: If she’s a Knight Templar Big Brother towards Rukia you can expect she’ll be like this towards her children.
- Oh she is. Just ask Kaze no Irokoe
- My Greatest Second Chance: Her reunion with Rukia courtesy of the combined efforts of Lelouch and Naomi.
- Musical Assassin
- Number Two: To Lelouch in the Phantoms; she outranks Isshin and Tosen, two captains, despite just being a leiutenant.
- Ominous Latin Chanting: Is heard in-universe when Hisana activates her Bankai's ultimate form. If her opponent is considerably weak the music persists even after the transformation is complete.
- [[spoiler: One-Winged Angel: Her Bankai's ultimate form. Very much Sephiroth themed.
- Power Gives You Wings: In Bankai
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: When using her Bankai's ultimate form. The eyes on the bird hood she wears turn red.
- Red Shirt Army: Hisana's birds from her Bankai are essentially this.
- Royals Who Actually Do Something: Captain of Squad 3 and damn well proud of it. She's also one of the first to step up to the plate if there's trouble.
- Single-Target Sexuality: She's only ever had eyes for Byakuya since their days in the academy.
- Stay in the Kitchen: Inverted with a literal use. Kaien actually tells Hisana to come out of the kitchen because she spends so much time in there. Surprisingly Hisana enjoys it.
- Subverted in the Reapers and Heralds arc. Shunsui tells her she should be more concerned with her children than fighting, but Hisana disagrees and explicitly states her reasons and the subject is dropped.
- Theme Music Power-Up: Her Bankai can do this in the form of Ominous Latin Chanting in-universe.
- She also apparently has a technique that powers up her allies. Once again the music is heard in-universe.
- Third Time's The Charm: When using the technique that activates her Bankai's Super Mode it works for the first time on the third try.
- Tribal Face Paint: Gets this with her bankai.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes??: Hisana hates bugs. So naturally, during the Karakura Arc, she fights an arrancar with an insect theme.
- Yamato Nadeshiko: Byakuya calls her this. And it's delved into more in chapter 188, making her the Silk Hiding Steel variety much like her daughter.
Ikkaku Madarame
The Hot-Blooded battle hungry 3rd seat of Squad 11. He is killed in the Battle of Karakura Town by Karrthus Darigaaz. As of his return in Permanent Sinner, he is Togabito #520.- Anti-Villain: Type IV. He never wants to fight Soul Society, he is just on the opposing side.
- Badass Decay: You'd expect him to be way stronger than #520.
- Killed Off for Real
- The Rival: To Shisato
- Wham Episode: His death is the first fatality of the Gotei 13 after Ichigo gets involved and sets the tone that this is not the Bleach we are used to anymore not that it was much like that entirely anyway but some things remained the same.
Isane Kotetsu
Vice-Captain of Squad 4 after her predecessor was detained for insanity. Having Unohana for a captain obviously had nothing to do with that. Isane has shown her...interest and shyness around Lelouch and has become somewhat of a personal nurse for him whenever he's been injured and sent to her squad.- An Ice Person: Itegumo's power, as seen during Reapers and Heralds.
- Ascended Extra: Much more prominent in Soul Chess than in canon Bleach.
- Their First Time: Loses her virginity to Lelouch when she offers to join the harem.
- The Medic: Stands to reason; gets unofficially recognised as Lelouch's personal physician, because as a Phantom, she can help cover for any injuries he and the rest of them receive.
- You Wouldn't Shoot Me: A non-dramatic, and more heartwarming version and with a sword. During Unohana’s Heroic BSoD, Isane tells Unohana she knows Unohana won’t hurt her and defiantly walks towards her and gives her a Cooldown Hug
Izuru Kira
Vice-captain of Squad 3 and also a student of Lelouch's. Dies during the Aizen's revenge arc against Ulquiorra.- Actor Allusion: In chapter 78, saying that he believes in the path he’s chosen makes it seem like Izuru is about to whack Victor with a bo-staff.
- Heroic Sacrifice / Taking You with Me: Does this against Ulquiorra to allow for Hisana and Byakuya to unleash their Synergy Strike.
- What Might Have Been: Meta. Renji and Momo have Bankai and Rukia is on her way to getting hers, so he may have achieved it had he lived longer.
Jushiro Ukitake
The fatherly white haired captain of Squad 13. His Bankai is called Hanron Dekinai Sogyo no Kotowari.- Archenemy: To Ginjo
- Hoist by His Own Petard: How his Zanpakuto works. His Bankai takes up to eleven. Poor Ulquiorra.
- Killed Off for Real: Averted; Vera, his adopted sister, saves him just in time.
- Limit Break: His Bankai when it stores up 19 attacks and then stores up a 20th fires back all the power it absorbs right back at the opponent.
- Official Couple: With Kiyone.
- Secret Test of Character: Gives one to Ginjo as part of the man’s backstory.
Kaien Shiba
The still alive Vice-Captain of Squad 13. In the face of Metastacia, Lelouch's interference allowed Kaien to survive the encounter and avenge Miyako's death. His Bankai is named Nejibana Sora ni Rasen-jo. Married to Rukia.- Ascended Extra
- Blood Knight: He seems like this when Ichigo releases his true power, but Word of God says that it's actually his pride that makes him so elated, since he hates it when his opponents hold back.
- Berserk Button: Do not defile Miyako's honor or memory in front of him. You'll regret it.
- Due to this, Mia has sort of become a living Berserk Button for him
- Declaration of Protection: Has taken up this mentality towards Rukia. It's why they're married.
- Handicapped Badass: Temporarily. While trying to rescue Rukia Kaien loses the use of one of his arms and since Nejibana is a two-handed Zanpakuto and he still manages to hold his own, he qualifies for this trope
- Happily Married: To Miyako. After Miyako's death, to Rukia
- Heroic BSoD: Has one when he realizes Miyako is a part of Mia.
- Honor Before Reason
- My Greatest Failure: He survives the encounter with Metastacia, but not being able to stop Miyako's death constantly eats away at him.
- "No More Holding Back" Speech: Delivers one to Mia saying that It no longer matters to him that Miyako is a part of her. He will defeat her anyway.
- Noodle Incident: Kukaku knows one about him and a chocolate fountain
- Not So Stoic: Kaien flips out during his first and third battles with Mia for defiling his memories of Miyako.
- In an omake, he joins in Ichigo's and Rukia's drunken singing after Kukaku has gone to bed.
- Relationship Upgrade: In chapter 74, Kaien marries and deflowers Rukia.
- Reverse Shrapnel: Part of his Bankai.
- Took a Level in Badass: In chapter 64 Kaien learns Bankai.
Kaname Tosen
The Captain of Squad 9. Tosen was Aizen's subordinate, but Lelouch managed to convince him to make a Heel–Face Turn and betray Aizen. Tosen, even while on Aizen's side, can tell that Lelouch has a strong sense of Justice.- The Atoner: Becomes this to make up for the death of Shuhei and Sajin and all he did before Aizen tricked him into revenge. Yuna's going to make sure he sticks to it.
- Heel–Face Turn: Lelouch convinces him to turn to betray Aizen
- Heroic BSoD: In the aftermath of the Battle of Karakura Town arcs. He lost both his student and his best friend. It was bad enough that he considered resigning himself as captain until Lelouch intervened.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Tosen nearly gets his team annihilated because Zurik is able to absorb the elemental energy in his Bankai.
- The Mole: His role after his Heel–Face Turn.
- Sixth Ranger: to the phantoms.
- Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: With Yuna. She doesn't trust him for working with Aizen for so long; it's why she ends up as Shunsui's VC rather than his. Seems to have healed by the end, when he brings her some much needed medical supplies during Hell on Earth.
Kenpachi Kiganjo
The captain of Squad 11 before Zaraki's time.- Brilliant, but Lazy: Not brilliant enough.
- Felony Misdemeanor: Let Zaraki talk smack and do as he pleased in his squad, but when Yachiru peed on the statue of the first Kenpachi he went nuts.
Kenpachi "Hitteki" Zaraki
The captain of Squad 11. Wiped out his predecessor with a single swing. His Zanpakuto is called Fumetsu Seishin no Senso (Indestructable Spirit of War)- Awesome, but Impractical: Kenpachi’s Zanpakuto lets him increase his power the longer he fights to the point where he gains faux-meatallic skin with flaming eyes when he reaches level 5. His Zanpakuto is standardly weaker than Kenpachi. Without his eyepatch, Kenpachi equals his Zanpakuto’s level 3 and his Zanpakuto can wipe the floor with Kenpachi at level 5. Kenpachi ever getting to level 5 is this trope. Most enemies would not last long enough for him to get to this point. Vanguard has survived long enough to force this twice, and if he's around Ichigo, it's a given.
- Arch-Enemy: Vanguard. Later becomes The Rival.
- Badass Boast: "I’m Zaraki Kenpachi and I never quit"
- Kenpachi repeats said boast after Ichigo snaps him out of his Heroic BSoD
- Berserk Button: Gets notably angrier if you threaten Yachiru.
- By the Power of Grayskull!: 'Go All Out, Fumetsu Seishin no Senso'.
- Even Kenpachi Has Standards: Kenpachi enjoys battle, but considers the SAZ massacre to be like roasting a pig and finds it despicable.
- Foreshadowing: Of a sort; at Kaien and Rukia's wedding, he sings "Indestructible" by Disturbed; his Zanpakuto has a near identical name (spirit of war vs master of war)
- Heartbroken Badass: If it is indeed true that he and the original Yachiru were more than friends. He qualifies for this.
- Potential Hilarious in Hindsight given canon developments.
- Heroic BSoD: Suffers this after his Zanpakuto beats him
- It's Personal: The main reason for limiting Ichigo's role in fighting Vanguard.
- Memetic Badass: The omake of ch 82 turns him into this.
- Punch! Punch! Punch! Uh Oh...: His first battle against Vanguard.
- O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Ichigo takes note of the fact that Kenpachi is in some serious funk by the fact that Kenpachi isn’t jumping at the chance to challenge him to a battle.
- Take Up My Sword: Outright defied in his backstory. Kensei asks him if he was going to do this for Hekira Yachiru, but Kenpachi simply responds he’s not strong enough to do so and leaves. Presumably to get stronger.
- Took a Level in Badass: Finally learns the name of his Zanpakuto.
Kiyone Kotetsu
The energetic co-3rd seat of Squad 13 and also the younger sister of Isane. Her Zanpakuto is called Usaginoashi- Kick Chick: Her Zanpakuto gives her greaves.
- Fangirl: To Jushiro Ukitake; he beds her in chapter 200.
- Official Couple: With Jushiro
Kukaku Shiba
Kaien's irate younger sister. She is hostile towards Lelouch at first, but has come to be one of his biggest supporters in recent years (in-universe of course). After Isshin's banishment since Kaien is the head of the Shiba clan, which is the main family of the Kurosaki clan, Kukaku is sent to prison for political reasons. Lelouch, now a captain, bails her out in exchange for having her join his squad. She complies and is currently a 5th seat under his command. Her Zanpakuto is called Kyodai Bakudan (Mad Bomber).- Ascended Extra: Much more prominent here than in canon.
- Berserk Button: Has three. Never say no to her, never treat her like she's easy, and you never tell her to shut up.
- By the Power of Grayskull!: 'Explode With Intensity, Kyodai Bakudan'
- Car Fu: She drives a 1960 Cadillac Convertible right into the walls of Las Noches so that she and the others can break inside.
- Combat Pragmatist
- Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Beats the shit out of Ichigo/Kaien whenever they question her/piss her off.
- Drives Like Crazy
- Hair-Trigger Temper
- Having a Blast
- I Was Beaten by a Girl: Largely averted. If Kukaku beats your ass down, complaining will only result in a further dose of pain.
- All Periods Are PMS: She pretty much runs the Shiba house on sheer terror alone—even Kaien cows to her will—during this time. In the one instance we see this. She is making Rukia, Ganju and Kaien labor for her breakfast and personal needs and is using two servants as her cushion and footrest and Kaien closing the door behind him after an exchange with her is described as "locking a dragon inside the room". Sympathies go out to the Shiba household.
- Mythology Gag: Lelouch isn't the first person Kukaku realizes Cannot Hold His Liquor
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: While trying to break Rukia out of prison Kukaku has a slip of the tongue and reveals that Kaien is trying to do the same thing.
- Number Two: To Lelouch in the early days.
- Power Fist: Obtains one when she releases her Zanpakuto.
- Sir Swears-a-Lot: And how!
- Wave-Motion Gun: A power of her Zanpakuto.
- Willfully Weak: Despite the fact that she could quite easily reach 3rd seat in Eleventh Division. Kukaku is perfectly complacent in Tenth Division under Lelouch.
Maki Ichinose
An 8th seat of the Eleventh division and a loyalist to Zaraki's predecessor.- Ascended Extra: only to be killed off by Lelouch.
Mayuri Kurotsuchi
The twisted successor over the Department of Research and Development to Kisuke Urahara. Killed off by Nyra and returns as Togabito #315- Asshole Victim: So much so that Lelouch and Unohana have no respect for his death and toast so that his time in hell will not be pleasant.
- Turns out it was relatively pleasant.
- Badass Decay: While never truly badass per se, he was able to hold off Kira Luz and Gin during the battles of Fake Karakura; come going to Hell, the best he can manage is #315. Even Tatsuki can do better than that.
- Family-Unfriendly Death: Oh yes indeed
- Killed Off for Real: By Nyra
- Again by Marriane. Possibly for good this time. given Hell's rules.
- Mad Scientist
- Token Evil Teammate
Miyako Shiba
Kaien's deceased wife. Her Zanpakuto is Hagane Renge (Steel Lotus).- Blow You Away: Her Zanapkuto's power
- By the Power of Grayskull!: 'Glide across the valley, Hagane Renge'
- Evil Costume Switch: As Mia.
- That Woman Is Dead: Tells this to Kaien as Mia, saying how they are the same person, but at the same time Mia is a separate entity all on her own.
- With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: While being absorbed by Aaroniero she fought back. She succeeded, but she lost her mind to the hollows he'd already devoured.
Momo Hinamori
Vice-captain of Squad 5 and a student of Lelouch's Kido class. Under our protagonist's guidance Momo has changed quite a bit from her Canon self. Now the New Captain of Squad 4. Her Bankai is Yudiana Tobiume Koken.- Anguished Declaration of Love: After her No-Holds-Barred Beatdown against Zurik she breaks down into a sobbing mess, demanding Hitsugaya be given back to her and eventually using this trope.
- Ax-Crazy: Downplayed. After the Atrumier incident (see Heroic BSoD), her first action as a Phantom after that is luring someone in a honey trap and quite gleefully shanking him. Lelouch tells her to knock it off.
- Berserk Button: Do not harm Hitsugaya. She will not like that.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Exaggerated in her battle with Zurik. DO NOT piss off Momo. There's a reason the chapter is called Break Momo, die horribly, no exceptions.
- Big Damn Heroes: In chapter 160 She saves Milly and stops Mao from causing a Temporal Paradox a la Butterfly Effect.
- Character Development: Momo has become much more independent and confident than in canon. One could even call her a less cynical version of Lelouch. This is, of course, an extension of having been taught by him and picking up some habits from him.
- It's gone a lot farther than that in recent chapters. Lelouch wants her to carry on the legacy of Zero should ill fate befall him; she was on the verge of declaring such when Lelouch returned.
- Corrupt the Cutie: Courtesy of Lelouch.
- Darker and Edgier
- Dark Is Not Evil/Light Is Good: Played with. In Momos battle with Zurik she looks like she’s about to go through a whole magical girl type transformation against Zurik for critically harming Hitsugaya, but she transforms into something a little more demonic and while Momo is still a protagonist she loses all self-control and delivers a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown brought upon by her Unstoppable Rage
- Expository Hairstyle Change: After becoming Darker and Edgier Momo removes the bun from her hair and just lets her hair flow down around her shoulders.
- Friend-or-Idol Decision: Zig-Zagged all over the place. Lelouch is the friend. Aizen is the idol. At first it looks like Lelouch has Momo on his side, but this subverted when Momo doesn't know who to choose after Aizen fakes his death and doesn't believe if Aizen is really evil. Of course, once Aizen is revealed to be alive after all, Momo loses it and fights Aizen when she sees him Central Forty Six.
- Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Delivered this to Lelouch when he is sleep deprived in planing the downfall of Central Forty-Six and was about to rape her.
- Go Mad from the Revelation: Despite Lelouch's plans this happened to her anyway. At least she didn't get stabbed through the chest this time.
- Gravity Master: Part of her Bankai.
- Heroic BSoD: Has one when she helps Lelouch and the Phantoms murder the Atrumier family.
- And a second one when Hitsugaya dies. It's a case of Faking the Dead, but she doesn't know that at the time. She flies into an Unstoppable Rage.
- In Spite of a Nail: Momo’s Zanpakuto still leaves her only this time it’s because Momo isn’t as dark and edgy as she was during the Phantoms of Justice arc
- Loves My Alter Ego: Hitsugaya's favorite phantom is Fantomu Baioretto.
- In recent chapters Hitsugaya seems to be struggling to confess to Momo despite Lelouch's encouragement. He does so eventually and they have sex for the first time.
- Mythology Gag: Chapter 74 is not the first time the author has had Momo sing Wake Me Up When September Ends.
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Delivers one to Zurik for severely injuring Hitsugaya.
- Official Couple: With Toshiro
- Pet the Dog: Quite literally in terms of petting. You’ll often see Lelouch patting her head whenever he’s proud of her.
- Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: From chapter 91 as she is bringing the pain to two adjuchas "Leave! My Squad! Alone!"
- Rescue Romance: By intervening and saving her and her classmates rather than Aizen, Lelouch became the target of Momo's affection as well, though it seems to be downplayed recently to just simple admiration.
- Shock and Awe: Seen when she loses control of her Bankai, but has since regained Control of it.
- Sinister Scythe: She obtains one when she flies into an unstoppable rage against Zurik.
- This Is Unforgivable!: Uses this trope when Zurik supposedly kills Hitsugaya.
- Took a Level in Badass: Despite everything above one word from her SCREAMS THIS. Bankai.
- Unexpected Successor: In-progress. Lelouch says that even if he produces an heir that, should ill fate befall him, he wants Momo to take the next mantle of Zero, leaving his entire legacy to her. She nearly has to do just that.
Nanao Ise
The pushy, upstart vice-captain of Squad 8. Killed by Loly in a very BRUTAL way.. Her Zanpakuto in this series is Fukuro (Owl).- By the Power of Grayskull!: 'Screech, Fukuro'.
- Dropped a Bridge on Her: She dies before she can get much in the ways of Character Development.
- Dual Wielding: Her Shikai is two small dagger blades.
- Improbable Use of a Weapon: Makes a habit of this because enemies don't expect it.
- Killed Off for Real
Nemu Kurotsuchi
Mayuri's "daughter" and surrogate sibling of Lelouch as he is the one who teaches her how to live in Mayuri's place for the captain is far too busy with other things to waste his time with such menial activities. She is one of Lelouch's biggest moral supporters. She also takes Lelouch's virginity. She became Lelouch's girlfriend for a time. He then broke up with her to protect her, but the two have recently gotten back together and is also a member of the House of Lamperouge; though not anymore. Seems to have got together with Renji at present. Her Shikai is Tekubi-kiri Tamashi (Wrist Cutting Soul).- Brother–Sister Incest: A little bit of Lelouch's genetic material went into her creation, so they're technically related despite the fact they are (or were) engaged in a sexual relationship.
- By the Power of Grayskull!: 'Sharpen, Tekubi-kiri Tamashi'.
- Improbable Weapon User: Her shikai gives her two gigantic wristblades.
- Killed Off for Real: Subverted. Mayuri invents a new artificial soul that curbstomps her offscreen and subsequently makes her heart stop, but Marianne later does...something to revive her. We're not sure what, but it required her to take her clothes off.
- Naked on Arrival
- Not Blood Siblings: with Lelouch.
- Pair the Spares: Ambiguous with Renji, after they both end up finishing second place for someone's affections; Lelouch's for Nemu, Rukia's for Renji.
- Undying Loyalty: towards Lelouch.
Nozomi Kujo
The 6th seat of squad 10 later promoted to 5th seat of Squad 6. Nozomi is from the Reigai filler arc in the Bleach Anime. Her Zanpakuto is called Arozome Shigure. More details about her can be found here.- Big Damn Heroes:She saves Euphie and Shirley alongside May Stowa against Tsukishima.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives one to Lelouch for his perceived hypocrisy after they return from the Black Rebellion. She gets transfered out and promoted when she states her unwillingness to continue serving under him.
Rangiku Matsumoto
Rangiku is the first character Lelouch comes across during the series. She has known Lelouch the longest period. (He's lived longer in the Soul Society than when he was alive). Currently the Vice-Captain of Squad 10 Under Lelouch himself no less, though she still prefers to drink than do her work, Rangiku proves herself as a dedicated supporter of her allies and especially her captain.- Going Commando: Pulls this once as a means of seducing Lelouch.
- I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: Inverted. She’s been trying to get Lelouch’s attention for the longest time now, but he never seems to accept her advances. Can you really blame him?
- Pet the Dog: Rangiku opts against telling Orihime that it’s all too likely Ichigo is dead rather than telling her the truth, knowing it would break her heart. She instead reinforces Orihime’s beliefs. Turns out she was right not to.
- Please, Don't Leave Me: says this to Lelouch in one chapter.
- Sex for Solace: Does this with Lelouch for her own shattered soul.
- She Is All Grown Up: Lelouch’s reaction to seeing her in chapter 15 after not having seen her in nearly twenty years
- Stripperific: She wears the bare minimum of her Shihakusho in chapter 61 in order to seduce Lelouch.
Renji Abarai
The butt of all of the author's jokes when he needs someone to suffer hilarious amounts pain, suffering or just to be the Punchline. Renji does eventually manage to get the recognition of Squad 6 Vice-captain he deserves, but that doesn't stop the author from stealing his dignity every now and then. Renji was, much to Lelouch's chagrin for his lack of ability, one of Lelouch's Kido students.- Berserk Button: Due to events that have happened in this universe, Renji has developed one for being called weak.
- Demoted to Extra: You would be forgiven for thinking that he had died at some point early in the plot.
- He is in the group of reinforcements sent to Karakura, but hasn't done anything significant yet.
- Subverted, as of recent events. He was able to successfully defend himself during the Battle of Karakura Town and is one of the three Lieutenants (Kaien and Yuna are the other two) going into the Final Battle of Karakura.
- He's also starting to get a larger role lately so the author hasn't completely forgotten about him it seems.
- Did Not Get the Girl: See Unlucky Childhood Friend below
- Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: An actual good an honest literal example of this trope. Renji actually punches Zabimaru in the face, while it’s using Bankai and it helps him win. Yeah you know the red tufted part of Renji’s Bankai. He punched that. Kaien lampshades it.
- Flanderization: In canon Renji is notoriously known for being both a Butt-Monkey and a victim of Badass Decay. In the fic it reaches a point where, if someone needs to be made the butt of a joke, expect Renji to be the victim or if Renji fights, don't expect him to win or put up that much of a fight.
- Seems to be getting subverted as of late with his Training from Hell and extra level in badass.
- Forgettable Character: The demotion is so bad that Ichigo barely knows who he is now and HE CAN'T STAND IT!!!
- Heroic BSoD: Has some rather hilarious ones when he learns that Kaien is going to marry Rukia and that the marriage is finalized.
- Overshadowed by Awesome: Kaien and Hisana specifically. He's gotten his own moments though.
- Pair the Spares: Ambiguous with Nemu, after they both end up finishing second place for someone's affections; Rukia's for Renji, Lelouch's for Nemu.
- Throw the Dog a Bone: Is actually useful and essential to Mia’s final defeat.
- Took a Level in Badass: In the second battle of Karakura Town, Kaien is getting the crap kicked out of him by Mia ‘s Segunda Etapa Renji attacks her with Hikotsu Taiho and sends her flying. Yeah that’s right, the Butt-Monkey always worfed red haired lieutenant just sent a Segunda Etapa Espada flying. He even did a decent amount of damage.
- Training from Hell: Invokes this on himself in order to Take a Level In Badass since he realizes he’s one of the weaker fighters in the second battle of the war with Talbumosuke. It's ripped straight out Dragonball Z, Gravity Intensification and Time Dilation included.
- Unlucky Childhood Friend: Becomes this when Rukia marries Kaien.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Gave one to Kaien to let him know that he is not on his own in fighting Mia.
Captain-Commander Retsu Unohana
Captain of Squad 4 now the NEW Captain of Squad 1 and both a terror and a mother to her allies, a nightmare to her foes. Her Bankai is Minazuki Zenmetsu (Purify the Flesh by Total Eradication).- Authority Equals Asskicking: Yeah, there’s a reason she is the second longest running captain.
- Awesome, but Impractical: Her Bankai's ultimate form can only be achieved if all five of the heads are destroyed simultaneously and her blade is broken. Good luck with that.
- It gets better; She has a form beyond that, requiring her to get drenched in blood before she can use it.
- Ax-Crazy: Used to be this. Still is on special occasions
- Badass in Distress: During a portion of the Aizen's Revenge arc.
- Black Comedy Rape: There's a hilarious omake incident between her and Isane.
- Blood Knight: Used to be this too. Along with Blood Lust.
- Brought Down to Badass: She’s expels a lot of reiatsu during the second battle of Karakura Town due to using her Bankai and healing a bunch of people, but she is confident that she can, along with Shunsui, Ukitake, Byakuya and Tessai, defeat Ulquiorra. They do, thanks mainly to Jushiro.
- Child by Rape: An indirect product of one involving Kasumi's Rape.
- Covert Pervert: If the omakes are to be believed, Unohana rather enjoyed the time the Shinigami Women's Association walked in on Lelouch, Ukitake, and Byakuya watching "Adventures Up The Ass III: The Marathon."
- Curb-Stomp Battle: Gives one to Sparrga and to a lesser extent Nyra; receives one from Kasumi.
- Dark and Troubled Past: In spades. She was originally a Rukongai serial killer, but a visit from Rita and a show of where she would wind up and how she could not go there changed her to be a more beneficial individual. Of course, at first, this didn’t stop her Blood Knight tendencies. It was after she lost someone very important to her that she stopped being Ax-Crazy and has spent her entire life changing herself and making something better of herself. It appears she seems to bury it all, but the tendencies are still there, but now she can control it.
- Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Unohana is able to cow the Soul King to her will by threatening to "go crying to mommy" in reference to her surrogate mother Rita. Completely justified, as it happens.
- Expository Hairstyle Change: Her braid is removed for good and she lets her hair cascade down after becoming the Head Captain.
- Please note that as this was written before The Reveal in canon, the throat scar Kenpachi gave her is not present.
- Eyes Do Not Belong There: There are eyes on her wings courtesy of her Bankai’s ultimate form
- Fanservice: Unohana wearing nothing on her top except her bra during her battle with Minazuki
- Flanderization: In canon, Unohana is benevolent, but if she smiles everyone falls in line. In the fic, her mere presence frightens those around her.
- Four Is Death: She’s the fourth person to fight Spargga. The end result is not pretty.
- Heel Realization: If her Dark and Troubled Past was anything to go by, Unohana stopped creatively killing people because she didn't like the atmosphere in hell and didn't want to go there.
- Heroic BSoD: Breaks down when she’s forced to act like an Ax-Crazy Blood Knight again
- Irony: Unohana became the captain of the medical division, despite her Dark and Troubled Past
- Laughing Mad: She is awfully happy when she’s shown in the past butchering hollows and people.
- Let's Get Dangerous!: If she undoes her braid it's a sign that she's taking the fight seriously. To prove a point Her fight against Ichigo's hollow form has her doing this. This action is absent in her fight with Spargga. Despite the fact that she used Bankai on the latter, keep in mind which battle was a Curb-Stomp Battle.
- As of the end of the Aizen's revenge arc her braid is gone which means now that if she has to step into the fight AT ALL shit has hit the fan. Case in point look at recent events in Canon with Yamamoto Vs Juha Bach.
- Licking the Blade: Does this in a flashback. And it's creepy.
- Made of Iron: Ichigo's half-hollow form ripped Ulquiorra to shreds. She survived an encounter with it.
- One of the lines put it nicely "A normal captain would’ve had their back torn in half"
- She didn't just "survive it". She, technically, won against it by knocking Ichigo out of it. This woman is scary
- Magic Knight: Never seen more prominent than with her battle against Ichigo’s half-hollow hybrid form.
- Martial Pacifist: Excessively justified.
- One-Winged Angel: She can transform into one if she bathes in the blood of her enemies enough.
- Power Gives You Wings: her Bankai’s ultimate form
- Reformed Criminal
- Slasher Smile: Used to sport this
- Stepford Smiler: If what Spargga said is to be taken at face value Unohana is possibly a Type C or perhaps used to actually be an Ax-Crazy Blood Knight and very very Cute and Psycho and Took a Level in Kindness and buried the tendencies. Word of God has not commented on this yet.
- Confirmed with the events of chapter 94 and also apparently has shades of type B as well. There is a lot she is hiding behind that smile.
- The Atoner
- The Reveal: The reincarnation of Kasumi's kid.
- Took a Level in Kindness: A la Backstory.
- Understanding Boyfriend: Had one of these. Sadly, note the "had".
- Unexpected Successor: The NEW Captain of Squad One by Rita herself, and CONFIRMED by Yamamoto HIMSELF.
- Not too unexpected considering Tite Kubo himself has gone on record saying Unohana is next in seniority (even though canonically Kyoraku got the title), but bearing in mind who is running the show here it's understandable to think Lelouch would've been promoted instead.
- Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Inverted. Unohana was fracking nuts when she was young.
- You Are Not Alone: Gets told this when she begins to have doubts about being the new Captain Commander.
Rurichiyo Kasumioji
Yes. that Rurichiyo. Princess of the Kasumioji clan and vice-captain of Squad 5. Rurichiyo makes use of the spiritual power that she has in honor of her fallen bodyguards Ryusei “Kenryu” Kenzaki and Rusaburo “Enryu” Enkogawa who gave their lives to protect the Soul Society, and her, during Aizen’s revenge. Her Zanpakuto is called Suzume Enbukyoku (Sparrow Waltz).
- Ascended Extra
- Big Damn Heroes: She saves Cornelia's life.
- By the Power of Grayskull!: 'Keep within Rhythm, Suzume Enbukyoku'.
- Dual Wielding: Her Zanpakuto's giant fans.
- Oh, Crap!: Sports this when her Zanpakuto Shikai is pierced by a large togabito and takes a Raikoho to the face with no impact. Rurichiyo starts running.
- Royal "We": She still has it even after receiving heavy discipline.
- Royals Who Actually Do Something
- Took a Level in Badass: Rurichiyo? That annoying little blonde from the Amagai Filler arc actually a competent hollow slayer? By the end, she's Hitsugaya's lieutenant in 5th Division.
Sajin Komamura
The canine Captain of Squad 7. He is killed in the second battle of Karakura Town by Spargga.- Killed Off for Real
- The Worf Effect: Even worse than in canon.
Sentaro Kotsubaki
The Hot-Blooded co-3rd seat of Squad 13. He is killed by the Togabito ZurikShuhei Hisagi
The Covert Pervert Vice-captain of Squad 9. Shuhei was also one of Lelouch's students while at the academy, but only during his final year. Killed by a Cero from Gloria.Shunsui Kyoraku
The laid back senior captain of Squad 8.- Acquired Poison Immunity: Reveals this to Uryu after a dangerous drinking game.
- Chew-Out Fake-Out: He expected a What the Hell, Hero? from Lisa because Nanao died, but it didn’t happen.
- Eldritch Abomination: His Bankai when you don't play by the rules
- Just a Flesh Wound: Says it word for word after his battle with Orin.
- O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Yuna thinks so after becomng his VC; he's nothing like how she remembers him or what she's heard. Lelouch put's it down to Nanao's death forcing him to start taking his job more seriously.
Tetsuzaemon Iba
The manly Vice-Captain of Squad 7. Fired by Yuna Homura for disrespecting her when she is given the status of 7th Squad Captain. He is replaced by Susanna Shapikni.- Flanderisation: In canon omakes, he's portrayed as a bofoon in his duties as president of the Shinigami Men's Association; a Running Gag is that Nanao constantly has his budget reduced and given to her, having his manliness crushed in the proccess. Here, he gets fired for implying that he sort of agreed with his squad's sexism, despite the fact that he showed no sign of this to the person who fired him only days before, and was perfectly civil with her then, and with all the other female leiutennants for that matter.
- Precision F-Strike: While fighting AllonThat thing just threw one of my squad’s former prominent fighters into the dirt without doing much of anything. Fuck this! We can’t beat that thing!
Toshiro Hitsugaya
The young child prodigy of Bleach makes his appearance very late in the first portion of the series, changing his destiny greatly. he does not become a captain until after Aizen's defection and is instead Captain of Squad 5 rather than Squad 10.- Actually a Doombot: See Faking the Dead below
- Always Save the Girl: This is what leads him to get Arrested for Heroism and sets of the chain link of events that make up the Lelouch and the Law arc.
- Anguished Declaration of Love: To Momo; before their grudge match with Zurik, he finally confesses how he feels and the two kiss.
- Ascended Fanboy: Openly supports the phantoms when he starts out as a Soul Reaper in training and eventually becomes one.
- Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Aizen, during 'Wish Fulfillment'. Subverted, in that he still loses, but puts up a reasonable fight unlike the first time.
- 11th-Hour Ranger: By the time he enters the phantoms, there's not much of the story before their final mission.
- Faking the Dead: Made an Ice Clone to fake his own death in order to strengthen Momo's resolve.
- Heroic BSoD: Has one when he discovers Lelouch is Zero and Momo is Phantom Violet.
- Another one came when he was imprisoned for two years and stripped from his role as Captain by Central Forty-Six on account of QUESTIONABLE MISDEMEANORS AT BEST (though he only served a month of his sentence before he was acquitted).
- Insult Misfire: Yammy is so stupid that Hitsugaya's diverse vocabulary proves ineffective when using an insult to tick him off.
- I Shall Taunt You: Uses this as a tactic to get Yammy to fire a cero so Ukitake can deflect it right back.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: His plan to have Ukitake cero Yammy in the face knocks the big guy down, only for him to go into his enraged form.
- Official Couple: With Momo
- What Might Have Been: See Trivia; nearly got Killed Off for Real.
Yachiru Kusajishi
The child looking Vice-captain of Squad 11. She calls Lelouch by his in-universe nickname Lulu. Her Zanpakuto is called Okotte Kemono (Mad Beast). She grows up a little as of ch 142.- Break the Cutie: In more of a literal sense as her Zanpakuto beats her to a mess and it leaves Yachiru heartbroken as well as severely injured.
- Brilliant, but Lazy: After she grows up a little.
- By the Power of Grayskull!: 'Dash, Okotte Kemono'.
- Cutlass Between the Teeth: How she fights with Shikai
- Red Baron: Pink Terror
- She Is All Grown Up: Okay, maybe not all the way, but she’s physically a teenager, starting with ch 142, with an attitude to match.
- Teenage Child: Yachiru still acts like a kid sometimes despite looking like a teenager and acting appropriately to one.
- Took a Level in Jerkass: In ch 142 Yachiru is now a teenager, physically, and she acts like one too.
Yumichika Ayasegawa
The effeminate and self acclaimed beautiful 5th seat of Squad 11. 3rd seat with Ikkaku gone- And This Is for...: His SHIHAKUSHO!
- Becoming the Mask: Masquerading as Keiichi's dad and Shisato's boyfriend to honor Ikkaku's last request. Over the course of time he seems to genuinely fall for her.
- Berserk Button: The same as in canon, apparently.
- Camp Straight: No, really.
- Disproportionate Retribution: See above.
- Does This Remind You of Anything?: Yumichika points out how hard slimy stains are to get out of black clothing.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Willing to become the adoptive father to Shisato's son Keiichi as a way to both support her and honor the memory of his best friend Ikkaku.
- Mistaken for Gay: Assures Shisato that he's straight.
