Team Bowser

The central protagonists of the story. When building his team for the Smash King tournament, Bowser sought out Peach and was able to recruit her; he recruited Meta Knight on the recommendation of Wario, and while initially skeptical, Bowser quickly saw Meta Knight's potential. Over the course of the tournament, they have gone nearly undefeated and are the second highest-ranked team.

"That's the powerful, the pleasurable, and the respectable King Bowser, to you!"

The unlikely hero of the story, where he is constantly picked on for his lack of strength. He makes a team of Peach and Meta Knight and enters the Smash King Tourney. He surprises everyone by unleashing something beyond the normal Final Smash during a match, the Ascent Mode. His team quickly goes from being the underdogs to the hot favorites. He plans to wish for a world where everyone is treated equally, a dream given to him by his old mentor, Mewtwo.

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: To the point that when DK stole Bowser's collar and wristbands, everyone treated Bowser like he was naked.
  • All Men Are Perverts: He instantly stopped protesting the house party idea when Dedede called in his Zero Suits.
  • Big Eater: He ate a party ball's worth of food, and right after he requested a crate load of drumsticks.
  • Berserk Button:
    • When Ganondorf reminds him of what happened to Pichu, he changes into his Ascent Mode and starts bashing the walls while screaming in rage.
    • Also being referred to as weak and/or a monster really sets Bowser off, as Mewtwo discovers while trying to kill him.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Temporarily made back into Ganondorf's "pet," and sent to devour his friends as Giga Bowser.
  • Butt-Monkey: Due to the failures of his previous lives, he was treated awfully in Melee.
  • Calling Your Attack: "Azure... Bomb!"
  • The Chosen One: The strongest member of the Creator's Triune, three trophies who were selected to oppose and be competition to the society of trophies, who were given attributes to evolve faster than the other trophies in order to help them grow as fighters as well. Because he is the strongest, and because this most recent incarnation of Bowser was able to tap into his latent potential thanks to Mewtwo's training and unlock an Ascent Mode, he managed to evolve at an exponential rate far more quickly than the Creator ever imagined, surpassing his natural intended limits. This caused the Creator to send Wolf, Samus and Snake to capture him so he could keep Bowser under his thumb and prevent him from becoming stronger than himself, which he was soon approaching.
  • Dumb Muscle: Averted, he certainly isn't as dumb as everyone thinks he is. Also a subtle dig to how Bowser's intelligence is portrayed in a majority of the Mario franchise.
  • Disguised in Drag: He does this in Episode Bowser when Wario, thinking the best way to win Samus over is to make her jealous, convinces him to dress as woman for the entirety of the episode.
  • Enemy Within: After Peach frees Bowser from Ganondorf's control, a remnant of the dark magic remains, taking the form of Dark Bowser. Although Bowser manages to avoid giving into his inner darkness, Dark Bowser does merge with him as he regains consciousness, implying that Bowser still might suffer from this trope.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Subverted. While he is a "villain" trophy and has a very growly voice, he isn't typically an evil character in this series. Not by his own volition at least.
  • Hero of Another Story: By the time of Smash King 2Decades, Bowser and his role in the events of the main series are regarded as legend. His descendant, a new incarnation of Bowser, acknowledges how his actions have changed the world for the better.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: After delivering one hell of a Curb-Stomp Battle to Ganondorf in Norfair, Bowser decides to attack Mario and play up the bad guy part so that Mario and Peach can go back to what they had in Melee.
  • Limit Break: His Ascent Mode.
    • And as of Episode 14, he now has a Giga Bowser Ascent Mode, thanks to the Creator's Power. It doesn't last long however, where he ends up releasing that energy and spreads it all over the world.
  • Magikarp Power: Went from being a pathetic fighter who always lost in Melee to a potential threat of power to The Creator himself.
  • The Mole: Acted as one for Ganondorf during Melee/Racconto.
  • Power Trio: A member of the Creator's Triune, and the most powerful of the three due to both his Ascent Mode and his Giga Bowser form.
  • Rule of Three: Will sometimes give a three second countdown before going on the attack. Funny and awesome moments on equal part.
  • Shes Not My Girl Friend: With Liz. Nobody, especially Wario, believes him in the slightest.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Delivered an amazing one to Ganondorf in Episode 13. Bonus points because it doubled as a "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
  • Straight Man: To Wario, constantly pointing out how ridiculous his plans to win Samus are.
  • Tranquil Fury: How he can use and control his Ascent Mode.
  • Training from Hell: What Mewtwo put him through during Melee/Racconto. His training under Charizard is implied to be this; unlike Mewtwo, though, Charizard rarely ever harms his pupils to build their strength.
  • Unstoppable Rage: This can happen pretty often. Sometimes it's Played for Laughs, sometimes it's not.
  • Vocal Evolution: Bowser's voice in earlier episodes was more reminiscent of Tigura21's own voice. Later on, Tigura figured out how to make his voice more growly and used The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! as a base for his performance.
  • "No More Holding Back" Speech: Uses this in the fight against Pikachu.

    Peach

Peach

Voiced by: Megami33 (Corrine Sudberg)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peachclearnew.png
"I don't want anyone protect me. How am I supposed to prove myself if you do?"

Most certainly not the Damsel in Distress. She has developed an Inferiority Complex from being kidnapped and rescued all the time, and considers herself useless. As a result of this, she decides to join Bowser's team to prove that she is stronger now. She also searches for Mario, who is believed by Bowser and herself to be dead.

  • Adaptational Badass: Compared to most versions of the character, this Peach is more than capable of holding her own in a fight. She also makes it clear to Bowser that she hates being rescued.
  • All Women Are Lustful: Although she tries to avoid this trope, even Peach can't resist the temptation of the Metal Gears.
  • Betty and Veronica: Surprisingly the Veronica to Liz's Betty.
  • Berserk Button: Don't try to rescue her from any situation, even if it seems dire.
  • Character Development: Multiple incarnations of her character go through this.
    • The original Peach from Melee went from a generic Damsel in Distress who needed Mario to do everything for her, to becoming a powerful, villainous character who uses her newfound powers to become a tyrant and rule all of Melee with an iron fist.
    • The current version of Peach also goes from an arrogant Jerkass who refuses to be helped to a more caring individual who stop at nothing to help Bowser.
  • Damsel in Distress: Averted. She really doesn't want to be rescued. Played straight in Racconto.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Not the current incarnation mind you, but the previous incarnation of Peach ends up taking over the world of Melee, and single-handedly disrupting the fabric of space and bringing monsters from the Adventure Challenge down on the world.
  • Hypocritical Humor: She chastises Bowser and the men about their lusting after the Zero Suits, then in stroll the Metal Gears...
  • It's All About Me: Until her Character Development kicks in, this is what she is like. This especially shows during the Exhibition Match with Team Donkey Kong in Episode 8. After having Donkey Kong go to town on both her and Meta Knight with minimal effort, Peach has the gall to chew out Bowser for saving her once again, despite it being obvious that the chances of her winning without his help were slim to none. After a talk with President Dedede and Zelda however, Peach owns up to her behavior.
  • Limit Break: The second opening implies that she has an Ascent Mode as well. After Bowser releases the Creator's power over the world, she was one of those affected, where her dress changed colors to match the one seen in the second opening.
  • Not as You Know Them
  • The Power of Love: Implied to be how she uses Palutena's Star Rod to help free Bowser from Ganondorf's control.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Compared to her Melee self, Peach has worked tirelessly to be a strong fighter. She also has been learning some familiar moves with a star rod.
  • Spoiled Brat: Back in the Melee era. Though the brat part only comes up around Bowser.
  • Vocal Evolution: Peach's voice has gotten slightly higher and more mature in tone in recent episodes, which can be spotted in the remake episodes.

    Meta Knight

"I can't let you leave just yet."

A Lovable Coward with a Split Personality, who is a complete badass. Joins Bowser's team for the Smash King Tourney. He likes to write poetry in his spare time.

  • Adaptational Comic Relief: Played with. While in his "red mode", Meta Knight is very awkward and clumsy, which can lead to some pretty funny moments. When he switches to his blue mode however, he becomes a straight-up badass who is strong and intelligent in battle.
  • Badass Normal: Not having Peach's Star Rod power or Bowser's Ascent Mode, Meta Knight is the most "normal" of Team Bowser. That being said, he's far from unskilled in his blue mode, as he's able to hold off Mario's Ascent Mode for a significantly long time despite being clearly outmatched.
Meta Knight (about Peach and Bowser's Ascent Modes): I hope you figure it out soon. But I won't let you both outdo me in strength!
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Ultimately the reason why Meta Knight doesn't believe Mario's stories about Bowser's supposed true nature. Since Bowser has been nothing but a genuine, kind-but-stern mentor figure for all of the tourney, Meta Knight's loyalty for him is completely unwavering.
  • Character Development: Word of God list his intended growth as maturing. Growing out of his insecure ways and into a capable and confident warrior. This is seen by him staying in his blue mode for much longer in later episodes.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: His cowardly persona is red/orange, while the other is blue/purple.
  • Cool Airship: Like his usual incarnations, he owns and flies the Halberd, which he fights Toon Link on in Season 1, and uses to take Peach, Falco and Pit to the Sea of Clouds in Season 3.
  • Cowardly Lion: Played with. While the red side of Meta Knight is very reluctant to do anything remarkably dangerous or risky, he'll do it if he's pushed to, or feel like he has to. And once he switches to his blue mode...
  • Cultured Warrior: He likes to write poetry with Zelda, and apparently owns several books. He later loans one to Lizardon in Act III so she can design her own Bling of War.
  • Foil: To Ike. Both are skilled swordsmen who are initially butt monkeys when they're first introduced, but eventually take levels in badass as the series goes on despite not having an Ascent Mode. However, Meta Knight is fiercely loyal to no one but Bowser and his friends, and refuses to let Mario through even after hearing his story. Ike on the other hand, tries to see both sides of the situation, which leads to him stopping Mario and forcing to listen to reason.
  • Friendless Background: It's heavily implied that Meta Knight had very few friends before Wario introduced him to Bowser in Episode 2.
  • Hidden Depths: Episode 5 shows him taken aback by Zelda's poetry, which encourages him to converse with her. Later in Act II, he's revealed to occasionally go to her house to exchange some of his own poems with her.
  • Lovable Coward: His red mode acts like this, acting nervous and unsure of himself, yet is still a charming goofball amongst his friends. Of course, the "coward" side of this trope fades after he switches personalities.
  • Nervous Wreck: While not quite to the level that Pit is, Meta Knight's red side often stumbles over himself, is awkward in conversation, often misunderstands people and Apologizes a Lot when people get annoyed with him. Though as he grows and matures throughout the series, this side of him slowly starts to fade as he becomes more self-confident
  • Overly Long Gag: His nervous babbling when Wario asks him how he is, describing how he arrived hours early to make a good impression, sat in a tavern and drank ten bottles of water to pass the time, peed himself, got kicked out of the tavern, had to cover himself in his shield to keep warm, his shield breaks and it hurts, it hurts so bad.
  • Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality: Meta Knight is nothing short of nervous when Bowser encourages him to have fun with some of Dedede's Zero Suits. When one of them goads Meta Knight into engaging with her midway through the house party, Meta Knight cowers behind Bowser's couch out of fear.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: With himself, having an ineffectual Lovable Coward on one side, and a stoic Badass Normal on the other end.
  • Ship Tease: Meta Knight seems overly fond of Zelda whenever they meet, and it's revealed in passing that the two of them occasionally exchange poetry at her house.
  • Split Personality: One is a coward, while the other is a badass.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: His cheering when accepted to Team Bowser implied no one else gave him the benefit of the doubt Wario did because of his timidness.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Season 2 shows Meta Knight recognizing Mario's Out-of-Character Alert from Episode 11, and actually manages to hold him off for a decent while, despite the latter being in his Ascent Mode. He also warns Mario that he will protect Bowser from any threat towards him no matter what the situation is.
  • Undying Loyalty: Ever since the big guy gave him a chance on the Smash King tourney and praised him during his first match, Meta Knight has had this for Bowser.

Team Sonic

The central deuteragonists of the story. Sonic built his team to be as balanced as possible—he brings the speed, Ike brings the power, and Mario acts as a jack-of-all-trades. Though Sonic acts as team leader, Mario's role is given more emphasis as his motivation for joining the tournament is to take down Bowser.

"Bowser is not your friend. He's just fooling you! Just like he fooled me..."

The Rival and The Determinator, Mario was believed to be dead by both Bowser and Peach. He made the jump to Brawl late, and is on a journey to destroy Bowser after remembering how Bowser betrayed him at the last minute when they were fighting Ganondorf in Melee. In order to do this he joins Sonic's team in the Smash King Tourney.

  • Anti-Hero: Mario is determined to see the world around him at peace, but also will stop at nothing to destroy Bowser, no matter how hard the people around him try to convince Mario that he's changed.
  • The Determinator: He's going to find Bowser, and put him down.
  • Elemental Powers: Mario's Ascent Mode has him changing into his power-ups from the main games based on what element he's feeling (i.e: Fire Mario for when he's in the heat of the battle, Ice Mario for when he's frozen solid). Roy's sticker allows him to access all of his powers from the Super Mario Galaxy games.
  • Foil: Mario's relationship with Bowser is quite similar to Mewtwo's. Both of them became close friends with Bowser during the events of Raccanto, and were deeply hurt by Bowser's supposed betrayal of their trust in the final days of Melee. Upon being reincarnated in the world of Brawl, both characters swear to enact their revenge on Bowser for the wrongs he'd inflicted on him, going to extreme lengths in order to do so. However, even after learning the truth of what actually happened in Melee, Mario remains bitter to Bowser's actions, and sees defeating him in the tournament semifinals as catharsis for all the pain he's been through. This is a sharp contrast to Mewtwo, who eventually forgives his old friend and defects from Ganondorf's side in order to help him once again, and is determined to assist Bowser in any way he can from the Twilight Realm.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Is very determined to fight and kill Bowser, to the point it becomes an obsession. He means well, but he's having trouble believing that Peach and the others would still support Bowser after being revealed of being the near cause of Mario's death in Melee and a spy for Ganondorf.
  • Hero Antagonist: Of a sort. Despite his intentions being noble, Mario's unwavering determination to take Bowser down after his betrayal in Melee goes to extreme lengths. It gets so bad in Season 2 that even Ike, who had supported Mario's mission up to that point, starts worrying about his resolve.
  • Hypocrite: While donning his doctor persona, Mario enjoys to boast his iconic slogan "A good doctor helps everyone in need!". And yet, when Bowser comes to him to help save a dying Pichu, Mario refuses to help him out, believing it was a plot to lure him away from Peach. Mewtwo of all people calls him out on this, pointing out that Mario was more than strong enough to take him down at the time, and would've lost nothing for believing him.
  • I Can Still Fight!: No matter how beaten up he gets in battle, Mario just doesn't ever quit when it comes to winning the fight.
  • Limit Break: He has an Ascent Mode just like Bowser. It's based heavily on his power-ups from his base games, with powerups including Fire and Ice Mario, and later a whole slew of them from Super Mario Galaxy.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: In Season 1, Mario's Ascent Mode was mostly limited to using his Fire and Ice forms while in battle. After receiving a mysterious sticker from Roy in Season 2, Mario suddenly becomes capable of using all of his powers from his native franchise, specifically those seen in the Super Mario Galaxy games.
  • Not as You Know Them: Truth be told, he actually hates his accent, but mostly uses it when sweet talking to Peach back in Melee.
  • Only Sane Man: Gradually subverted. Throughout Act I and most of Act II, Mario seems to be the only person capable of seeing through Bowser's deception, and also has a focused goal that isn't blind justice or for his own glory like his teammates. However, as Ike and Sonic begin to go through their own Character Development and as everyone learns just how complicated Bowser's situation is, Mario's objective becomes substantially more inane and selfish, with several people calling out his actions.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: Inverted. Mario has abandoned his trademark Italian accent, but occasionally slips back into it when he is surprised, angry or has been kicked in the balls.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Was able to catch up and fight toe-to-toe with Ganondorf thanks to a certain sticker, and even used Roy's Flare Blade attack on him.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Mario initially treated Bowser like the one-note villain he expected in the world of Melee, but gradually came to respect and be friendly with him after Bowser improves himself and joins his team for the Smash King tourney. But when Bowser was forced to betray and murder Mario on Ganondorf's command, their friendship is irrevocably destroyed, with Mario refusing to see him as anything more than a backstabbing monster.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Back in Melee, Ganondorf left Pichu just barely alive and had Bowser go out to see if anyone would come to Pichu's aid. Mario was one of the people he went to, and Mario forced Bowser away due to believing that it was a trap. Remember that Mario is a doctor, who's slogan is "A good doctor helps everyone in need!".

    Ike

Ike

"Whatever you plan to do with my fellow comrade, you'll have to answer to me, Ike, the Hero of Justice!"

A lovable loser who puts Honor Before Reason, and as a result, is shunned by many. He joins Sonic's team in order to help Mario, his first friend, defeat Bowser.

  • BFS: The sword that he carries around is as long as he is.
  • Badass Normal: Is the only member of Team Sonic to not have an Ascent Mode. Despite that, he manages to hold his own in combat, armed only with strength, a big sword, and his convictions.
  • Butt-Monkey: Definitely in the first season.
  • Character Development: Most evident after the Time Skip.
  • Children Are Innocent: He thinks this of the Yoshi babies whose mother he killed. Until they attack. He also thinks this of Ness, until he and his teammates attack.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Greatly suffers from this in the first act, where he derails an exhibition match between Peach and Wolf thinking the former was in trouble, and also lets Team Yoshi take advantage of them by choosing to believe and assist Ness. Let's just say there's a reason why Sonic likes to mock his "hero of justice" title.
  • Foil: To Meta Knight. Both are skilled swordsmen who are initially butt monkeys when they're first introduced, but eventually take levels in badass as the series goes on despite not having an Ascent Mode. When it comes to Mario's rivalry with Bowser however, Ike tries to see both sides of the situation, which leads to him stopping Mario and forcing to listen to reason. Meta Knight on the other hand, is fiercely loyal to no one but Bowser and his friends, and refuses to let Mario through even after hearing his story.
  • Friendless Background: "Well, I would fight for my friends... if I had any! (starts crying)
  • Genre Blind: When first introduced, Ike thinks that he's a noble hero that needs to interfere to rescue people at all costs. This gets him beaten up by Peach and Wolf in Episode 2, and duped by Team Yoshi in Episode 7. Thankfully he quickly grows out of this trope come the second season.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: While he had no issue towards Bowser personally, he joined Mario as a token of good will for helping him in his Yoshi misadventure. But later, he shows some doubts and concerns of Mario's blantant refusal to see Bowser as anything but evil, and eventually stops him in his rush head-first to Hotel Bowser hot-headed.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Unlike his teammates, Ike's power comes from his words and the convictions behind them. This is most notable during his battle with Link. At first, his attacks did little damage to Link, and Ike refused to fight him. However, upon hearing Link's story, Ike resolves to fight Link in order to prove him wrong, and manages to muster enough strength to fight Link toe-to-toe in his Ascent Mode.
  • Honor Before Reason: Does this a lot, particularly in the earlier episodes.
  • Lawful Stupid: Played straight in the first season. Subverted in the second one, where he starts to show genuine consideration about both his actions, and the actions of others.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: tends to jump into situations without looking over them completely. When he listens to Link's tragic story patiently before offering his own feedback, it shows his growth to being a true Hero of Justice.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Ike is normally impartial, but still somewhat supportive to Mario's personal mission to defeat Bowser at all costs. But after fighting Dark Link and witnessing Meta Knight leave Shadow Moses Island to help out Bowser, Ike finally puts his foot down and forces Mario to agree to not kill Bowser straight out of the gate. This is enough to make Mario (reluctantly) calm down.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Ike goes from being a blind Butt-Monkey who does "heroic" deeds without thinking first, to a thoughtful, determined, and powerful hero who does his best to aid the friends that he has.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Initially thinks he's a strapping hero of justice whose goal is to rescue everyone who needs saving. However, this becomes much more downplayed in Season 2. while Ike still sees things from the "hero of justice" perspective, he's much more aware of what constitutes as heroism, and is more willing to listen to other people in order to make good, heroic decisions.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: He lost his castle to a mother Yoshi. While he does slay it, her eggs hatch, and the two baby Yoshis chased him and Mario out, The Benny Hill Show style.

    Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic

"Hey! I'm waaaaitiiiing!"

A Fragile Speedster who enters the Smash King Tourney to win. He shares a rivalry with Captain Falcon, the other speedster of Brawl. Sonic has an extreme impulse to win at any cost, as he is the "Fastest Thing Alive" and needs a reputation to live up to.

  • Ascended Extra: Tigura said that he was a little tired of Sonic's near-eternal Butt-Monkey status in Super Smash Bros. machinima, so he did this for Sonic.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Sonic gets his wish of being the fastest thing alive, after Captain Falcon sacrifices himself to save Luigi, Marth, and Sonic himself. The way he earned this title does not please him in the slightest.
Sonic: Well Sonic, you got what you always wanted. You're the sole speed demon in the world. Heh, it's like I was treating this as a game. I might be fast, but I'm so damn stupid.
  • Berserk Button: Very few things tick Sonic off, but one thing he absolutely refuses to stand for is finishing a race with a tie. When he does so with Captain Falcon, he's so pissed off that he immediately challenges him to another race, and later increases it to a full-out fight, just so that somebody will win.
  • Born Winner: Strives to be this, but he draws in a race with Captain Falcon.
  • Character Development: Sonic initially starts off as a self-centered glory hungry Jerkass who cares mostly about asserting his position as the fastest character alive. However, after his battle with Link, witnessing the events of what goes down in Norfair, and especially Captain Falcon's death, Sonic realizes that there's more to the world than speed, and vows to help out his allies whenever they need him.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His first fight with Mario, specifically the dialogue before it.
  • Flash Step: Manages to do this both as Hyper Sonic and with Shadow's sticker.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Constantly asserts himself as the fastest, even going so far as mocking Captain Falcon for losing to him. However, he fears that if he admits Falcon to be his equal, or even a rival, he wouldn't be special. Falcon may be willing to share the title of "Fastest in Brawl", but Sonic sure isn't.
  • I Shall Taunt You: Manages to drive Diddy up the wall with taunts long enough for Mario to finally catch him.
  • It's All About Me: In the first arc of the series, Sonic's main objective is to win the tourney and assert his dominance as the sole speed demon to walk the World of Brawl.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: In spite of his jackass behavior, Sonic is truly pure at heart, and cares deeply about his teammates. This especially starts to show up in the second arc, post-Captain Falcon mortem.
  • Limit Break: On top of his Final Smash to transform into Super Sonic, he gains an Ascent Mode in the form of Hyper Sonic in Act II, which he later combines with Shadow's Chaos Control to use near god-like Super-Speed and Teleport Spam.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After witnessing the first Captain Falcon bite the dust, Sonic realizes just how selfish his goal of being the fastest truly was, and ultimately decides to become a better person from the experience.
  • Teleport Spam: After receiving Shadow's sticker, he gains the ability to teleport from one place to another with ease. Combine that with his innate speed and Hyper Sonic Ascent Mode, any hope of beating this guy in a race just shriveled up.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Not that he never was a badass in the first place, but Sonic's speed goes up a notch after he reaches his Ascent Mode, Hyper Sonic.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Vowed to become a better person after Captain Falcon's Heroic Sacrifice and subsequent Reset.

    Wario

Wario

Voiced by: Tigura21

"Uh-oh. I'm glowing."

Bowser's best friend in the world of Brawl. Although he's very eccentric and has a very one-sided crush on Samus, the two are nigh-inseparable, and are always there to help one another.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: To say that this version of Wario is a very different person from most incantations of the character would be a massive understatement. While he's implied to have the bad hygiene and love for gold in certain episodes, these traits are heavily downplayed in contrast to the more down-to-earth personality he demonstrates instead. Wario also inverts his trademark selfish behavior, and is chummy with almost everyone in the world with Brawl, especially Bowser.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Wario has a very big crush on Samus, who makes it clear that she does not tolerate his advances in the slightest. That doesn't stop him from doing (almost) everything he can think of to stalk or woo her.
  • Apologetic Attacker:
    • In the very first episode, Wario is quick to apologize after runs over Captain Falcon with his motorcycle. Somewhat justified in that he did this entirely by accident while just trying to get wherever he was heading.
    • A much more serious example of this trope happens in Episode 13, where Wario apologizes to Bowser before participating in the assault on his brainwashed friend.
  • Audience Surrogate: Having no superpowers, ascent modes, or a love of fighting, Wario mostly focuses on his own goals of trying to win Samus's heart, and to help out his friends when they need it. Act III shows that Wario is starting to shift towards the latter goal much more, due to Samus becoming a Broken Pedestal for him in Episodes 14/15.
  • BFG: Wario seems to have a subtle love of the Cracker Launcher, as he frequently uses it to shoot at multiple enemies (or one really big one) until it runs out of ammo.
  • Butt-Monkey: He goes through a lot of crap trying to chase Samus, perhaps even more than Ike.
  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: Inverted. Wario constantly hits on, oogles, and stalks Samus due to his attraction towards the bounty hunter, even after he's beaten the crap out of several times. Yet, when he interacts with other women such as Peach, Zelda or Lizardon, Wario treats them as he would with any of his male friends with few, if any sexual connotations.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: In his own words, just because he doesn't like to fight doesn't mean he can't. Episode 5 shows Wario holding his own pretty well against President Dedede, and he shows great prowess in fighting a mind-controlled Giga Bowser and holding off Ganondorf and his minions shortly afterward.
  • Day in the Life: Episode 5's main plot was following Wario in his endeavors to make Samus his girl for Bowser's house party.
  • The Determinator: No matter how often Samus shoots his attempts down, figuratively and literally, Wario's guaranteed to get back up and try for her affections again.
    • This trope also applies to any dire situation that Bowser's in. You can bet your ass that no matter how outmatched he may be, Wario will be there to help his friend out.
  • The Everyman: Interestingly enough, he was made to relate to the viewers more than the other characters. Mostly because he has no dramatic past or super power, and just does what he does, be it stalk Samus or go help his friend Bowser.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Wario has no interest in competing in the Smash Tourney for his own benefit, as he admits to Zelda that being able to woo Samus simply by having the Creator magically do it for him would take away the challenge of trying to win her by his own means. In fact, the only reason he even considers it early in the series is so he can help Bowser.
    • As seen in Episode 15, Wario's obsession on Samus is undeterred by her repeatedly harming him every time he gets too close to her. Samus harming his best friend on the other hand? That instantly ends his love for her.
  • Expy: He is a pervert, child-like, and loves to annoy Bowser; whom is his best friend. Reminds you of a cute yellow mouse doesn't it?
  • Fartillery: Come on, it IS Wario. Though it tends to backfire on him more often than not.
  • The Gadfly: Often likes to make fun of Bowser's shortcomings to get a rise out of him.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Bowser. Wario is never afraid to help him out through thick and thin situations, from helping him select a third teammate for the tourney, rescuing him from Ganondorf's clutches (twice!), and fending off his house from a wild group of Yoshis.
  • Imagine Spot: Briefly wonders what a Bowser-ruled Dystopia would look like in future installments.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: Wario's been beaten down by Samus in increasingly painful ways multiple times, but he still manages to get back up every time. In Act III, it's even revealed that he's somehow managed to go on as long as he has without even losing a single one of his ten-life stock, something Bowser is incredulous upon hearing.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Although he can be abrasive and rude to his friends at times, Wario genuinely cares about Bowser and his circle of friends, doing everything he can to make sure they're happy. A little strange, when you consider the source.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: Comes across as this to everyone but Samus, his crush.
  • Money Fetish: Averted for the most part, but eventually downplayed come Season 3. After he falls out of love with Samus, Wario takes to becoming a Professional Gambler, betting on Lizardon during exhibition matches and the Emeraudefest to earn lots of cash for the both of them. He admits that part of the reason he's started doing this is due to knowing that "money can't hurt [him]", although he still spends it freely to help Lizardon for upcoming matches, meaning he's not nearly as greedy as is traditionally expected.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: He makes it clear to Samus that he is not kidding around when he intends to confront her after the events of Episode 15.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Lizardon. Despite initially seeing her as nothing more as a girl Bowser has Friends with Benefits with, the two eventually become friendly with one another after the events of the Hotel Bowser / Norfair incident. Though the two like to tease each other about their shortcomings, the two genuinely care about each other, to the point of working together to get rid of the Yoshis in Hotel Bowser (though not without Liz beating him for letting off a Wario Waft in the process). The two even start working together to earn some money in Episode 20, through Lizardon participating in Exhibition Matches, and Wario betting on her. In "The Ruby-Eyed Draco", Wario even becomes Liz's trainer and puts his own ten-life stock on the line so that she'll have a fighting chance, showing how much he cares about her.
  • The Power of Love: Claims this is how he gets his Heroic Second Wind to fight against Dedede, much to Peach, Zelda, and Samus' chagrin of such a cliche line.
  • Precision F-Strike: Wario briefly drops a "bullshit" at one point in "Bowser's Butterflies".
  • Professional Gambler: He's revealed to have become a version of this in Act III, where he's revealed to have made an insane amount of cash by betting on Lizardon's expedition matches, which have been largely successful thus far. He invites Bowser in on his money making scheme, which he eventually comes around to.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: For a good chunk of the series, Wario has no other goals in life other than to claim Samus as his beloved. She doesn't share the same feelings.
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: Briefly becomes this to President Dedede in Episode 5 due to their mutual attraction to Samus. It doesn't keep.
  • Skewed Priorities: He accompanies Meta Knight on his mission to follow Samus and get information on her suspicious activity not because he cares about what she's up to, but because he believes Meta Knight wants to have her for himself. Even when they get to Shadow Moses Island, he only sticks around because he's worried about Snake being a rival for his affections. Though once he finds out the situation involves Bowser, he very quickly turns serious.
  • Stalker with a Crush: To Samus. Averted as of Episode 15, after Wario discovers what she intended to do with Bowser.
  • Victory Is Boring: Wario is a strong believer in this trope. In fact, one of the reasons he refuses to join the Smash King tourney is because he would find life to be incredibly boring if he were able to get Samus to fall in love with him on a whim.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: While Wario and Bowser may tease and insult each other on occasion, the two are inseparable as friends. It extends as far as to willingly assist Zelda to rescue him from Ganondorf, and even rejects his one-sided crush on Samus through the logic of "bros before hoes."
  • Vocal Evolution: Wario's voice in earlier episodes was very quiet and high-pitched. In recent episodes, Smash King HD, and in remakes of older episodes, Wario's voice is much deeper and louder.

"Watch us fight, Bowser!"

A female Charizard, and Bowser's Love Interest. She is revealed to be the heiress of the Moon Stone Tribe, a group of wild Charizards native to the area surrounding Saffron City; for reasons unknown, she broke off from them to pursue a dream of becoming a fierce warrior.

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Wears one of Bowser's arm rings on her tail in Act III. It's implied to be an engagement ring of sorts.
  • Affectionate Nickname: "Liz" is actually the nickname given to her by Bowser. In Episode 20, she starts calling him "Loggerhead".
  • Animal Talk: Speaks in animal tongue for a majority of the series, leaving only Bowser, Fox, President Dedede, Wolf, and any type of Pokemon to understand her. Bowser and later Lucario do tutor her in learning English however, which allows Liz to become fluent in English by Smash King HD.
  • Bling of War: Episode 20 reveals that Wario got Saffron City's tailor to craft a set of armor for her, with the intention of attracting the crowd's attention. It has a flame symbol from a book Meta Knight lent to Liz engraved in it.
  • Breath Weapon: Being a Charizard, Liz can use the move Flamethrower.
  • Characterization Marches On: In her earlier appearances, Lizardon was very quiet and introverted, speaking very little English even when around Bowser. During and after the Hotel Bowser / Norfair incident (and in some remake episodes), Lizardon has become much more outgoing, rivaling Bowser himself in terms of playfulness and Large Ham tendencies.
  • Civilized Animal: She may be a Charizard, but Liz certainly doesn't act like a wild Pokemon.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": "Lizardon" is actually the Japanese name for Charizard meaning that Liz is technically an example of this trope, with Red having given it to her.
  • Glass Cannon: A variant: As a Charizard, she's a deadly fighter with a fair arsenal of powerful attacks and skills at her disposal, as well as being able to take quite a beating. However, it's limited by the fact that, as a Charizard without a Pokemon Trainer attached to her at least until Wario becomes her trainer, she only has one life stock compared to the typical ten that full trophies have. As such, if she loses that one stock, it's game over for her.
  • Happily Married: In Smash King HD. Not so much in the main series where it's revealed that she took a Vow of Celibacy to pursue her dream of becoming an independent warrior.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": Zig-zagged Lizardon is later revealed to be a huge fan of Lucario when they meet up with each other in Saffron City. She understandably is confused when he seemingly attacks Bowser alongside Fox in the second season, and briefly attacks him in a rage due to being unaware that Mewtwo left his body.
  • Limit Break: Her Final Smash in the fourth world, which allows her to Mega Evolve.
  • Large Ham: Not quite to Bowser's extent, but Liz certainly can get loud and bombastic when she wants to.
  • The Mistress: Due to frequently spending time with Bowser, Wario calls her this just to get under his friend's skin.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Wario.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: As a Charizard, she constantly looks for any way to grow stronger.
  • Vocal Evolution: In the few instances Lizardon spoke in the early parts of the series, she was very quiet and reserved. As she gained much more presence, her voice got much louder and flamboyant.
  • Vow of Celibacy: Swore a "chastity clause" in order to pursue her dream of becoming a warrior.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Lizardon cares very much about Bowser's wellbeing, and is quick to retaliate against anyone who appears to do him wrong.
  • Younger Than They Look: Was only a few days old when Bowser arrived in the World of Brawl.
