Team Ganon

The main antagonists of the story. Ganondorf's participation in the Smash King tournament is merely a means to an end, as he secretly plots to usurp control of the world while his teammates secure their place at the top of the rankings. The team is currently at the top of the leaderboards, having gone undefeated over the entire duration of the tourney.

"You'll willingly become my pet again in due time, Koopa."

The Big Bad of the series. Back in Melee, his plan was to meet and defeat God with the help of Bowser on the day when the characters made the jump to Brawl, in order to recreate the new world in his image. This plan backfired when Bowser killed Ganondorf just before the jump to Brawl. His new plan in Brawl seems to be to win the Smash King Tourney and use his wish (and Bowser) to conquer God. To this end, he seeks Bowser to become his pet again, whether Bowser wants to or not... until he happens to find Ridley, who is not only more powerful than Bowser could ever hope to be, but is also willing to aid Ganondorf in his plans.

  • Bad Boss:
  • Because Destiny Says So: He claims that he and Bowser can never be more than monsters because of their past incarnations.
  • Casting a Shadow: His powers are all based around darkness, from his warlock punch to his ability to imbue his attacks with darkness.
  • Cool Sword: A one-handed orange sword that he can pull out whenever he needs it, where it can directly modify a trophy's matrix.
  • The Chosen One: The second strongest member of the Creator's Triune, three trophies who were selected to oppose and be competition to the society of trophies, who were given attributes to evolve faster than the other trophies in order to help them grow as fighters as well. Because he is the second strongest, he can't pull off his plan to kill and overthrow the Creator on his own, and needs Bowser's power in order to achieve this goal. This is also likely the reason he cannot obtain his own Ascent Mode as well.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: He knows how to destroy and alter the matrices of other trophies.
  • Dark Is Evil: Is the self-titled King of Darkness, uses darkness-based powers, and is actively working towards an evil goal.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Doesn't take well to "Ganny". When confronting Dedede at the B.S Society's headquarters, the President mockingly refers to Ganondorf as such, which he takes offense to. In a Smash King HD short, when Jigglypuff calls him "Ganny", he insists not to called that. Similarly, Toon Link likes to call him "Ganondork", although Ganon oddly doesn't take offense to that one.
Ganondorf: G-Ganny? Surely I'm not deserving of a demeaning nickname such as that.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Bowser. Both suffered because of their reputations, something they had no control over, and tried hard to fit in with others. While Bowser has finally managed to break the image everyone had of him, Ganon has given up and decided to become the very thing everyone feared of.
  • Evil Laugh: He has quite a few, but lets out one of the biggest laughs in the series in Episode 18 after essentially holding the entirety of New Pork City and revealing Ridley.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He may be an absolutely evil man, but that doesn't mean he can't hold civil small talk with his enemies.
    "See my new nose?"
  • Godhood Seeker: Plans to use Bowser's near godly power and the Smash King victory to overthrow The Creator and take his place.
  • Hero Killer: He is responsible for the deaths of Pichu, the previous Fox, and Mewtwo.
  • Hypocrite: He explains to the captured Wolf that he despises killing people for the sake of it. This is the same guy who sics Giga Bowser on his friends and the B.S. Society, merely because he wanted to cause some havoc.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Alongside Link, things get quite harrowing whenever he is present.
  • Made of Iron: Mario's Final Smash doesn't even faze him.
  • Noble Demon: Claims to be as much when he helps purify Wolf of the Creator's influence. Ganondorf muses that, barring a singular exception, he loathes killing for the sake of killing (though given the body count listed under Hero Killer, it's hard to pinpoint which death was the exception to his rules).
  • No-Sell: See Made of Iron.
  • Not So Stoic: Normally he keeps his Faux Affably Evil persona up, but when he gets angry, you'll know it.
Ganondorf: (to Link and Lucario) Honestly, you two can't be left alone to do anything! We may have Koopa sooner than expected, but how do you suggest our plan to go smoothly if WE WERE DISQUALIFIED?!
  • One-Man Army: In Episode 13, he battles Mario, Ike, Fox, Falco, Lucario, President Dedede, and Meta Knight at the same time, with a clear advantage. It takes Bowser waking up from his coma to fight the dark lord for him to depart.
  • One-Winged Angel: His Final Smash, Ganon.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: As mentioned in Noble Demon up above, Ganondorf does not enjoy killing people simply because he can. Though given the massive amount of people he has killed, one must question how much Ganondorf actually lives up to this trope or not.
  • Power Trio: A member of the Creator's Triune, and the second most powerful of the three. Being second-rate to Bowser is what drives him to manipulate the Koopa to his own wicked ends.
  • Tennis Boss: Similar to his boss fight in Ocarina of Time, Ganondorf can be stunned by his own lightning magic. He and Bowser engage in a quick volley after the Koopa comes to his senses.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: Revealed in Racconto that Ganondorf became the villain he is because no one would give him the chance to be one of them, all thanks to the reputations of his past incarnations.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He shares Mewtwo/Lucario and Bowser's dream of making a fair world for all Smashers and avoid getting ostracized. But just because he plans to make a new world doesn't mean he won't avoid the chance to make the current one suffer.
  • Wicked Cultured: What's Ganondorf's response to Kirby mimicking him in Episode Lucario? To quote a line from one of Shakespeare's plays with an especially long word in it.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Killed Pichu, who is implied to be very young.

"Does there need to be a reason to fight?"

An Ax-Crazy Blood Knight and one of Ganondorf's teammates/minions. He was one of the main characters fighting against Ganondorf in Melee, but lost to him in the end. When he arrived in Brawl, he realized that he didn't have to be the "Hero Of Time" and kill Ganondorf, so he joined Ganondorf For the Evulz.

  • Ax-Crazy
  • Adaptational Villainy: Link in his games is a just all-loving hero that helps everyone and has an unbreakable will, never failing to do the right thing. This Link is a deconstruction that shows what the pressure of being the chosen one that can't afford to fail and is only appreciated and liked for being said role can do to a person mentally, and drives him to the side of villainy because it's what lets him feel truly free and to be himself.
  • Blood Knight: See his quote.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Ike thinks Link is this. He isn't.
  • Casting a Shadow: In his Ascent Mode.
  • Co-Dragons: With Mewtwo.
  • Combat Sado Masochist: According to Ganondorf.
Ganondorf: I know you actually enjoy pain, Link, but don't ever press your luck.
  • The Dreaded: To Ivysaur. The poor Pokemon is utterly terrified of Link due to him finding pleasure in cutting and slicing the poor Pokemon up in his spare time. It would be Played for Laughs if it weren't for Link's genuine sadism and the other acts he commits in the series.
  • Evil Laugh / Laughing Mad
  • Fallen Hero: Showed signs of stress and pressure being looked up by the other Smashers as the "Hero of Time". Ultimately decided to join Ganondorf after the transfer to Brawl.
  • Freudian Excuse: Read Fallen Hero and Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds.
  • Giggling Villain: Whenever he gets into a fight, he'll be giggling like a madman while inflicting pain, whether they deserve it or not.
  • It's All Junk: What he considers his incarnation's status.
Link: "The Hero of Time?" It's only a title.
  • Hero Killer: Ends up extinguishing Captain Falcon's final stock during the battle at the Bridge of Eldin, though not before being defeated at the hands of his Falcon Punch. Falcon ends up being reborn sometime later, but that doesn't make Link's actions any less horrifying.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He is a fast opponent who has the power to match his speed. His Ascent Mode amplifies things even further, to the point that Sonic of all people is worried that he'd be outsped by him.
  • Limit Break: Alongside the Triforce Slash Final Smash, he has his own Ascent Mode in the form of Dark Link.
  • Not as You Know Them: Of all the characters in Smash King that have this, Link is the most memorable.
  • Not Brainwashed: When Ike confronts Link in the Negative Space, he holds hope that Ganondorf has been controlling him somehow, since he knew Link as the "Hero of Time" that he had read about. Link isn't impressed, and explains very carefully to him that his newfound personality is of his own free will, with Ganon having minimum involvement in shaping it.
  • Oh, Crap!: Link's word-for-word reaction when Sonic uses his Ascent Mode and almost lands a decisive blow that ends up destroying Eldin Bridge.
Sonic: I told you not to blink, Link.
    Link: Oh, crap!
  • Omnicidal Maniac: While Link's bloodlust was already at disturbing levels before the second act, his transformation into Dark Link while battling Ike has him going utterly nuts in his attempts to kill him. Being transported to the Bridge of Eldin doesn't slow him down in the slightest, as he only becomes ecstatic at the thought of maiming both Team Falcon and Sonic in his rampage.
  • One-Man Army: Tends to fair very well on his own. He managed to beat Sonic and Team Falcon effortlessly even after his brief bout with Ike, and kept coming after taking the brunt of Sonic's Ascent Mode. The fact he was in his own Ascent Mode for a good duration probably helped.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red Oni to Mewtwo's Blue Oni.
  • Screw Destiny: A rare villainous example. He refuses to be forced into the role of the "Hero of Time" any more.
  • Sadist: After shedding the nobility of being the Hero of Time, Link starts to enjoy harming his victims much more than he did previously. And yes, we do mean "victims", since Link will now go out of his way to attack anyone and anything in his way, including poor Ivysaur.
  • Shows Damage: On others. The real strength of his Ascent mode is being able to cause internal damage to other trophies, causing them to bleed or even break apart.
  • Villains Out Shopping: Waits in the Santa visitations line during the Winter Festival to ask Santa for a new "scratching post".
  • The Worf Effect: Goes from being able to handle Ike, Team Falcon and Hyper Sonic all at once during the Bridge of Eldin fight, to being utterly curbstomped by Zero Ridley at the Emeraudefest Battle Royale.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Link was forced to live with the burden of a reputation he felt he couldn't uphold, but never once told anyone how uncomfortable he was. The only one who offered Link a chance to break the cycle was Ganondorf, leading him to become the sadistic monster he is today.

    Lucario (Spoilers)
The original third member of Ganondorf's team. While Lucario joined the team, in actuality, it was the spirit of Melee's Mewtwo that seeked revenge on his former student, Bowser. That was until the real Lucario forced Mewtwo's spirit out the Pokemon, retaking control of his body.

For tropes regarding Mewtwo and his time possessing Lucario, see his page in The Twilight Realm.
For tropes regarding Lucario, see his page in Bowser's Friends and Rivals.

    The Replacement (Spoilers)
After being fed up with the mission that was given to him, Wolf betrays his teammates and switches sides to join Ganondorf in order to be free of the shackles that bind him to his mission. He becomes Team Ganon's new third teammate after Lucario's departure, promising Ganondorf information regarding the Creator.

For tropes regarding Wolf, see his page in The Creator's Mercenaries.

Other Major Villains

As the Smash King tournament nears its end, Ganon's plot begins coming together. Although Bowser ultimately freed himself from Team Ganon's clutches, Ganondorf found a contingency in Ridley, one of several god-like beings called Tetracardinals. Certain circumstances fully awakened Ridley and allowed both him and Ganondorf to create offshoots of themselves—Zero Ridley and Phantom Ganon, respectively.
    Ridley and Zero Ridley

Ridley

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/metaridley.png
"They're old news. And old news bores me."

A villain shrouded in mystery. He seems to share an unspoken bond with Ganondorf, and is actively working with him.

  • Adaptational Wimp: Averted in the main series, where Ridley's power is equivalent to, and perhaps even greater than, that of a god. In Smash King HD, however, he's more likable due to his affection for Liz, not as apparent sadism and no traces of any godly strength.
  • Back from the Dead: Was found dead from unknown causes, but is recovered by Ganondorf and put on life support. It's Bowser rejecting the Creator's power and sharing it with the world that enables him to function on his own.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Conquers New Pork City.
  • Berserk Button: Much like Bowser, he initially detests being referred to as Ganondorf's "pet."
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Part of a group called the "Tetracardinals," the Foil of the Creator's Triune.
  • Butt-Monkey: In Smash King HD. Despite his fearsome demeanor and his role as a major threat in the series proper, it's jarring to see a major antagonist be treated like a bumbling side character.
  • Clone Army: Upon conquering New Pork City, Meta Ridley unleashes an army of Ridley clones.
  • Cyborg: He was wholly flesh prior to being found by Ganondorf. Team Ganon outfits Ridley with robotic parts in order to resurrect him.
  • Dark Lord on Life Support: Even after being resurrected, he can't survive without robotic parts. He's also confined to the area beneath New Pork City, though this works to his and Ganondorf's advantage. However, Ridley does have a "Zero" form that can leave New Pork City willingly, and is capable of dishing out massive amounts of damage without feeling much pain.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Appears in Smash King HD, which premiered before his official debut in Episode 18.
  • Evil Is Bigger: Easily the largest character in the series, dwarfing even Giga Bowser. Averted with his Zero form however, which is around the same size as everyone else.
  • Evil Sounds Raspy
  • Foil: To Bowser. Both are perceived as nothing more than violent monsters, but while Bowser's conscience leads him to abandon his villainous disposition, Ridley actively embraces his role as a harbinger of doom and havoc.
  • Greater-Scope Villain
  • Hero Killer: Ridley takes this trope up a notch in Episode 19 with Samus. Basically, he reflects and enhances the same energy immobilizing attack she previously used on Bowser, and then proceeds to eat her alive as she struggles to form her last words.
  • Hidden Villain: Never seen until the end of Act II.
  • Mix-and-Match Man: While most of his genetic code has been infused with Bowser's DNA, Ganondorf also infused him with elements of Link and Lucario's DNA. Thus, he inherits most of their strengths and relatively few weaknesses.
  • The Omniscient: Seems to know a great deal about Bowser's past, including his role in the Creator's Triune and his relationship with the previous Peach. Since he was enhanced with Bowser's DNA and memories, it's no wonder he knows so much.
    • Also counts as a case of Mythology Gag, as in Metroid: Other M, Ridley is shown to have the ability to remember certain things from a previous life if he's cloned.
  • Self-Proclaimed Love Interest: To Liz. In Smash King HD, this is despite the fact that he's nothing more than the victim of Bowser and Liz prank calling him once a week.
  • You Wake Up in a Room: Meta Ridley wakes up in Team Ganon's base with no idea where he is or who brought him back from the dead.

Zero Ridley

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zeroridley.png
"There's so many ways to deal with feckless cretins like you...though, it wouldn't hurt to experiment."

An offshoot of the original Ridley. Zero Ridley acts on behalf of the original, taking orders from Ganondorf.

  • The Dragon: To Ridley, who in turn serves as one to Ganondorf.
  • The Dreaded: The moment President Dedede reveals him to the public after his stint in Saffron City, everyone is shocked at his appearance. Even Sonic looks terrified of him.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Somehow manages to one-up Ganondorf in this regard. During the Emeraudefest at Saffron City, Zero interrupts Link and Lizardon's battle, and proceeds to curbstomp the former while shrugging off most of his attacks, even in his ascent mode. Bear in mind that Dark Link was capable of wiping the floor with Ike, Hyper Sonic, and Team Falcon all in the span of a few hours, so that really says something about Zero Ridley's strength.
  • Literal Split Personality: One of many offshoots of the original Ridley.
  • Mix-and-Match Man: By virtue of being a clone of the real Ridley, he also inherits the abilities of Bowser, Link and Lucario.
  • My Hero, Zero: Inverted. Zero Ridley may just be an offshoot of the actual Ridley, but that doesn't make him any less dangerous, as Link can attest to.
  • Nominal Importance: The only one of the countless Ridley clones to have a name.
  • Softspoken Sadist: Despite his monstrous behavior, Zero Ridley manages to maintain a reasonable facade...at least, until his anger shows though.
  • Torture Technician: Is eager to not only torture his foes, but also find new ways of carrying out said torture.
  • Wicked Cultured: Speaks very eloquently.
    Phantom Ganon

Phantom Ganon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/phantomganon_4.png

One of Ganondorf's minions. As a result of Ganondorf gaining an increase in power, Phantom Ganon is a useful summon for the Evil King.
