Prisoners

    General
The people trapped inside the Midnight Express and its four buildings.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: At some point during their lives, Luna, Neil, Diana, Apollo, and Selene committed a crime and realized the error of their ways, so they decided to start over as honest people... then they promptly get sent to the deadly strange dimension through the Midnight Express, who decides that since they are criminals, they deserve to suffer its punishment.
  • The Many Deaths of You: The characters can be hanged, stabbed, Squashed Flat, and killed in a variety of ways.
  • Significant Birth Date: Instead of random dates, Lydia assigned the five characters meaningful birthdays related to the development of the game.
  • Stellar Name: All the characters have moon-related names.
  • Two Girls to a Team: Inverted. Neil and Apollo are the two guys in the group of five main characters.

    Luna Wyndell

Serenity

The Mute Traveler

The main character of the game, Luna is a traveller looking for a certain place. She is mute and communicates with other characters using a notebook. She meets Neil in the train and protects him during dangerous situations.

It's later revealed she's Serenity, the top assassin of Black Gear, having joined in her childhood in order to avenge the deaths of her parents. After realizing that killing her parents' murderer didn't give her the satisfaction she wanted, she left the organization. Because of this, she's branded as a traitor and captured in the Midnight Express.

  • The Ace: Of the Black Gear assassins. So much Justice II said that he could let any member leave the organization as they wish, but not Luna.
  • Achilles' Heel: The brave, active Luna is reduced to a panic mess and has an awful nightmare about betrayal upon facing some landmines.
  • Action Girl: Luna has done a thing nearly no RPG protagonist does when they’re stuck with a password-locked box: take a pipe and beat the hell out of it until it open. She’s also in charge in most of the action scenes. Justified, as she used to be an assassin working for Black Gear.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: She was bullied at the orphanage for being unable to talk. Luckily, Selene stepped out to protect her.
  • Amateur Sleuth: A year after the incident with Midnight Express, Luna takes up Neil's dream and becomes a detective who collaborates with the police to make up for her crime. While she is more about apprehending criminals than deductions or brainy stuff, she's trying very hard.
  • Bifauxnen: While clearly feminine in appearance, she wears masculine clothes (under her coat is a white shirt and shorts) and takes the more physical role between herself and Neil.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Her color is blue, and she’s the main character of the game with a strong moral code. Herself in the past, however...
  • Book Dumb: She's frightened at the sight of math, and gets very confused at puzzles that require some calculations.
  • Brains and Brawn: The Brawn to Neil’s Brains, as the physical-oriented girl who gets a little too excited at the aspect of breaking things.
  • The Cameo: Briefly appears in the after credit of Aria's Story's Good Ending, as a passing traveler.
  • Code Name: She’s known in Black Gear as "Serenity", based on her silent and tranquil disposition.
  • Conspicuous Gloves: Luna wears black gloves all the time to hide the gear tattoo on the back of her hand, which will reveal she was a member of Black Gear.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Luna is a mute Action Girl capable of defending herself and her companions, while Aria is a non-action Cheerful Child. This also goes into the fact that while they’re both trapped in another world, Luna is fully alive but the real Aria is Dead All Along.
  • Child Soldier: Was made to undergo tough trainings to be an assassin since childhood, which resulted in Black Gear’s best assassin.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Luna is the smartest, most creative protagonist of Lydia's games, using fists, kicks and improvised weapons in astonishingly inventive ways. Justified, as she's an assassin and has to get creative in her kill.
  • Cute Bruiser: Whenever they encounter a locked door, Neil has to tell her to stop bursting it open or else she may hurt herself. The Midnight Express itself also makes a rule to prevent her from breaking its windows again, in case the front door is stuck.
  • Cute Mute: According to Word of God, Luna is congenitally mute. She can't make any sound from her throat and her laughter is just air coming through nose.
  • Cute Witch: In Lydia's 2019 Halloween artwork, Luna is dressed as a witch.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her parents were killed during a terrorist attack when she was a child, right in front of her eyes. Later, she was convinced to join Black Gear as they took advantage of her desire to avenge her parents, and made to train so hard it caused her emotional scar.
  • Death Seeker: In Chapter 4, Luna suddenly becomes very depressed and repeatedly gets into deadly situations. It turns out this is because she feels guilt about her role as a Black Gear assassin and wants to die before Neil realizes the truth.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Crossed it when seeing her parents killed in a terrorist attack. Happens to her again after finding out Selene's pocket watch had stopped three years ago and she is doomed to entrapment forever. Luna even considers sacrificing her own pocket watch, until Selene snaps her out of it.
  • Empty Eyes: The manifestation of her past self when she was in Black Gear certainly spots these, showing how emotionally broken she was back then.
  • Famed In-Story: After the one-year timeskip, Luna becomes renowned in Bluebell as its pride, "the silent detective" who singlehandedly defeated the whole Black Gear organization.
  • Go and Sin No More: After she escaped the Midnight Express, Luna sought to the police and admitted her crime, but due to her assistance in the Black Gear case that allowed them to arrest the whole organization saved for the two heads, they decided to let her go in exchange that she works with them in future cases.
  • Heroic Mime: Totally justified in this case, since she’s born mute.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Luna is conscious about her muteness, and also grew to dislike the life of an assassin after realizing how the more people she killed, the more unhappy she felt.
  • Leitmotif: Dark Engel.
  • Lightning Bruiser: She is strong enough to crush skulls with only a hammer, and has enough energy and agility to jump through countless obstacles without exhaustion.
  • Meaningful Name: Luna is Romanian for moon, and also Roman Goddess of the Moon itself. Her surname, Wyndell, means friend or white, which fits her white hair and kind heart.
  • Mirror Match: At the end of Chapter 4, before they reach the train, Luna has to fight a manifestation of her past self when she was in Black Gear. This is an allusion to Luna leaving her sinful past behind to finally move on and deserve to live like a normal person.
  • Mystical White Hair: An adorable girl with white hair tied in a low ponytail, and is very mysterious for much of the game.
  • Not So Stoic: Luna seems composed at first, but later she’s revealed to be cheerful, rash, and somewhat ditzy.
  • One-Woman Army: While we don’t get to witness the sight, some times after escaping the Midnight Train she goes up to Black Gear headquarters, fights every trained assassin there at once, and defeats them all.
  • Professional Killer: She was an assassin for Black Gear with a kill streak of 108 human lives under her belt. This makes it very easy for the Midnight Express to drive her into a suicidal depression once it manages to convince her that with such bloodstained hands, the only way for her to redeem is death.
  • Redemption Equals Death: She appears to adopt this mindset in Chapter 4, if her deliberately trying to get herself killed after being guilt tripped by the last building is any indication. Luckily, Neil snaps her out of it and Luna has a chance to redeem later, still alive.
  • The Reveal: In Chapter 4, Luna reveals to Neil that she was a member of Black Gear, the organization thought to be responsible for their entrapment, and also the one that killed Neil’s uncle.
  • Took a Level in Badass: When she was still in the orphanage, she was noted to be weak and easily bullied. Several years later, she became the greatest assassin of Black Gear.
  • Trauma Button: Explosion is one for her, but also the number 108. It’s the number of people she had killed under Black Gear’s order.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Subjected to this by a thief she’s chasing after a year since the Midnight Express shenanigans who, despite knowing about her reputation, still convinces himself that a girl like her shouldn’t pose a threat to him. This Too Dumb to Live man promptly gets his ass kicked.
  • Vengeance Feels Empty: The reason she decides to defect from Black Gear is that, even after finally killing the terrorist who murdered her parents, she did not feel any satisfaction, and the more people she killed, the less happy she felt.
  • When She Smiles: Luna is normally composed and rarely emotes, but after Neil tells her how much she means to him, she gives out a heartfelt smile.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Her case of ekrixiphobia/fear of explosions, originated from a traumatic event she suffered in the past.
  • You Killed My Father: The reason she joined Black Gear was to get revenge on the terrorist that killed her parents. However, it failed to bring her any satisfaction, so she ended up defecting.

    Neil Lawton
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/71a736cd_facc_43f7_98e2_20d455d8400b.png
Probationary Detective

Luna's companion throughout the game, a gentle and kindhearted guy who wants to be a detective and is stuck in the same situation as her. He is weak, naive and panics easily, but his intelligence helps Luna with puzzles and riddles.

It's later revealed that Neil's crime was perjury, covering for his extortionist uncle after murdering someone.

  • Accomplice by Inaction: The reason he ended up in the Midnight Express is that he lied to cover his uncle's murder of someone, for fear that his uncle would kill him. He still beats himself over this years later since he believes he’s also responsible for the death of the two girls his uncle killed.
  • All-Loving Hero: Neil is very kind towards people, and even if he tries he can’t really bring himself to hate anyone unless they prove themselves to be utterly despicable and rotten to the core.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: According to his monologue during his flashback, the other kids at school bullied him for his dirty look and always sorrowful mood, which only added in to his depression.
  • Amateur Sleuth: Neil hasn't take on any (official) case yet, but he is definitely one after everything he has done in the buildings: solving mysteries and deducing truths. After he returns from the Midnight Express a year later, he and Luna become an actual detective duo.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Has darker skin tone compared to other characters.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Unusual for him, he snaps at Luna for risking her life only to flip a switch while he was watching. His angry sprite also appears when Luna tries to hurt herself in Chapter 4.
  • The Atoner: He states he wants to become a detective due to a crime he committed in the past. Chapter 4 reveals he committed perjury, as he didn't testify against his uncle (who was known for extorting people into giving him money and killed several people in the process).
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: He's very devoted to Luna because of this. She was the first person, especially one around his own age, to be kind and gentle to him. He's also moved to the point of tears when Apollo finally warms up to him.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Neil can be scary if Luna's safety is threatened, which is best shown in Chapter 3 where he personally picks up a pickaxe and beats three eye monsters to death because they approach the cave Luna was in. He also confronts Selene by himself when he thinks she could prove a danger for Luna, fully knowing he is defenseless at the time.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Their age might not have that much difference, but he instinctively looks after Luna when they first met despite his own fear, and tries to ward Diana from Apollo’s "bad influence" during the reunion.
  • Black-and-White Morality: Downplayed. While he doesn't like Black Gear as he believes vigilantes are bad and the legal process must be respected, he does agree with them on occasion about how criminals should be stopped before they negatively affect society.
  • Brains and Brawn: Obviously the Brains to Luna’s Brawn, being The Smart Guy who is quite enthusiastic about solving riddles. Whenever he gets paired with Apollo or Selene, this happens too.
  • Brainy Brunette: Has brown hair and is the smartest guy of the bunch.
  • Butt-Monkey: He's the frequent target of Apollo and Selene's snarky comments. If anything funny happens, it usually has him as the butt of the joke. While Apollo finds Neil's self-righteousness annoying, Selene thinks he's a loser...and is a little jealous of how close he and Luna had become in such a short time.
  • Character Development: From Chapter 2 onwards, Neil has changed from a naive, weak burden who needed protecting by a young girl to a more assertive, courageous and confident person, determined to fight until the end. He even starts using weapons and fighting enemies like Luna.
    • He gets another gun as a compensation for the time he has lost during the torture, and this time it does not have limited bullets. Cue the shooting game.
  • Cowardly Lion: He considers himself a spineless coward, but he will not step aside when danger could happen to Luna and his newfound friends. The reason he thinks so was because he didn't stand up to his uncle when he murdered a man, resulted in the death of two girls he went on to kill. However, considering said uncle abused him and stated he won't hesitate to kill Neil if he dared to cross him, his fear is justified.
  • Deuteragonist: His Character Development and personal struggles play as much major parts in the story as Luna’s, and he takes the initiative to drive the plot forwards whenever Luna is unavailable.
  • Endearingly Dorky: He is awkward, naive, and is the easy target of many snarky comments or hilarious situations. While mostly joking, Selene does say that Luna thinks of him as "cute", which immediately causes him to fluster.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: Spots them a year after the Midnight Train event, caused by the torture he endured at the fourth building. They disappear after enough rest.
  • Friendless Background: It takes him 20 years of life to find his first friend in the form of Luna.
  • Gentle Giant: Believe it or not, Neil is 184 cm tall. Also the oldest and nicest of the main cast. In the final group shot of the cast, Neil is shown to tower even Apollo.
  • Grew a Spine: Neil used to be a meek doormat in his childhood due to the abuse he suffered and still shows shades of this at the time he meets Luna, but after Apollo’s seeming demise he becomes more assertive.
  • Happily Adopted: After being abandoned by his uncle after the trial, he was taken in by his neighbors who were noticeably nicer and more caring towards him, allowing him to recover from his depression until the news about the two murdered girls arrived.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Sacrifices his chance to live and willingly stays in the worst of the four building in order to help Luna escape from the Midnight Express, giving her his working watch despite this meaning he cannot escape. Fortunately, a dying old man eventually does the same to him.
  • I Hate Past Me: When an illusion of young Neil appears to stop him from solving a puzzle to save Luna’s life and try to make him escape alone, he declares that he’s disgusted by the former’s cowardice.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: He is skilled as textile works such as fixing clothes and sewing teddy bears’ limbs together since he did them often in his childhood, and said to be the best cook of the main five by Word of God.
  • It's All My Fault: He is prone to blaming himself for anything going wrong and believing he could have prevented someone's death. Especially after he fails to persuade Apollo, he looks like he is going to have a breakdown. It requires Apollo's seeming death to shake him up for the upcoming Chapter 3. Chapter 4 reveals this is a result of his uncle's abuse, and he also feels this way about the death of both his parents and the two girl his uncle killed.
  • Laughing Mad: Subverted. He seems to have lost himself to the torture in Chapter 4 as he laughs mirthlessly after being made to repeat the degrading words his uncle forced him to say in his childhood and yet is not released, but turns out he’s pretty much sane and just having his laugh of pure condescension at the man for his stupidity by thinking Neil is still the same person he was in the past.
  • Leitmotif: Detective's Dream.
  • Long-Range Fighter: Neil is surprisingly decent with ranged weapons, as Word of God said. We get to see his skill (actually the player’s skill) in Chapter 4, where he practically uses the skulls as shooting targets.
  • Lovable Coward: Right from the beginning, Neil presents himself as a not so strong-willed guy. He easily freaks out and may scream like a schoolgirl at the sign of something scary.
  • Made of Iron: He doesn't look like it, but Neil can be surprisingly tough both physically and mentally. The torture in Chapter 4 has him suffer from the feeling of having 300 knives stuck in his body, and while he does scream and cry out, he only needs a short rest to get up fine (assuming he does take a rest). During his one year at the fourth building, he was tortured at least once a day and it does cause strain to his mental state, but he takes a very short time to fully recover from it.
  • Madness Mantra: He mumbles the word "Pathetic" repeatedly during his breakdown in Chapter 2. In his childhood, after being made to repeat the degrading sentence thrice by his uncle, he went on to say it by himself several more times with Empty Eyes and an equally empty smile, showing how broken he was at the time.
  • Meaningful Name: Neil is taken from Neil Armstrong, the first person who landed on the moon, and he is Luna’s first and most long-lasting companion in the game. Lydia chose Lawton for his surname because it contains the word “Law”, fitting his dream to be a detective.
  • Mouth Stitched Shut: Neil describes his portrait in the second building with his mouth sewn shut. That scene is more important than a jumpscare. It returns in Chapter 3, this time with a clear CG. And it’s terrifying.
  • My Greatest Failure: His cowardly silence in the court eventually led to the death of two innocent girls under the hands of his uncle. He feels so guilty about it that he considers it a crime he has to atone for even though it isn’t supposed to have anything to do with him.
  • Nice Guy: A gentle and kindhearted guy who can't be mean to anyone. Sometimes too good for his own sake, as both his uncle and Diana manipulated him for their own ends.
  • Non-Action Guy: His physical strength is on par with someone who has never come to the gym all his life, so he needs Luna to protect and do heavy things for him. However, from Chapter 3 onwards, this is subverted.
  • Parental Abandonment: His parents died when he was young in an accident, leading to him being adopted by his uncle.
  • Older Than They Look: The art in game doesn’t do very well in showing that he’s the oldest character of the main five, making him look like he’s younger than Apollo. The new art style does him a little more justice, but still not much.
  • The Smart Guy: Being in charge of “Neil’s Deduction” alongside most of the riddles requiring thinking and calculation, he is definitely this.
  • Sweet Tooth: His favorite treat is chocolate-covered strawberry. When looking at the big mirror in the third building, he mentioned beforehand being surrounded by chocolate and strawberry would be his paradise.
  • Took a Level in Badass: At first, Neil is some kind of a protectorate who is naive and frightful. From Chapter 3 onward, he takes a more active role, starts using weapons, and can even fight and confront a suspect right when there’s a chance; In Chapter 4, he effectively leads the story forward with badass moments.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Has brassy gold eyes.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: When the train seemingly kills Apollo just for disobeying its rules, Neil becomes visibly angry and determined to defeat the train.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Chocolate-covered strawberry. As he mentions it, he also invites Luna to go try it with him after they escape the building.
  • Waistcoat of Style: Wears one as a part of his wannabe detective attire.

    Cynthia Miller

Copycat

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2a682a05_f80c_4a1e_a0fb_3bf1a7e7daa7.png
Unfortunate Girl

The first person that Luna and Neil encounter in their adventure, a gentle girl that values loyalty and friendship. She’s also Diana’s friend.

She has another identity as "Copycat", an informant that worked for Black Gear. She helped Luna escape from the organization and because of this she was branded as a traitor and captured in the Midnight Express.

  • Abusive Parents: Her father used to mistreat Cynthia and her little sister when they were young, until they were saved by Black Gear. She's been very loyal to the organization since then.
  • Animal Motif: Cat. Her codename is Copycat, she wears a cat hoodie, she’s also a copycat.
  • Big Brother Instinct: She can't stand being separated from her younger sister when she was trapped inside the building, since she wants to protect her from any danger. She also volunteered to become a Black Gear member and underwent harsh training sessions because she knew her sister wasn’t cut for it.
  • Break the Cutie: After being trapped in the Prison Dimension with only Diana as her friend, she decides to jump off a balcony.
  • Driven to Suicide: The first building already traumatized her to the point she felt no future was left for her, and so she jumped off a balcony.
  • In the Hood: Wears a hoodie with fake cat ears.
  • Master of Disguise: Specialized in disguising herself, infiltrating and gathering information about criminals.
  • Meaningful Name: Cynthia was originally an epithet of the Greek goddess of Hunting and the Moon Artemis, proving her connection to Diana.
  • Mercy Kill: Before Cynthia took her own life, she begged Diana on her knees to give her her poison, for obvious reason. Diana, of course, refused, so she got angry and decided to take matters into her own hands.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: She helped Luna escape from the organization, after the latter expressed her desire to stop being an assassin and live a normal life. This results in her being sent to the Midnight Express.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: While she dies early on, she inspired Diana to dream for a better life. She also helped Luna escape from the organization, which resulted in Luna being trapped in the Midnight Express and eventually breaking the curse and liberating the prisoners.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Black Gear. But she has it much greater to Luna.
  • We Named the Monkey "Jack": Her name is later fittingly used to name Luna’s pet cat, in a likely attempt to honor her.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: She has clear gold eyes, and is a spy literally sneaking around to gather information.

    Diana Lovelace
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d37ff1f2_6ca9_49dd_b865_47b4d875f746.png
The Young Chemist

A shy girl that aspires to be a pharmacist. She is very intelligent, being able to create many chemicals on her own since she was young. She meets Luna and Neil after an unfortunate event, and quickly befriends them, but there seems to be something off about her...

Diana's crime was producing medicines illegally.

  • A Day in the Limelight: She’s the protagonist of the bonus.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Diana is 17, the only teenager in the game, while other characters are 18 or older. If you ask about Cynthia, she's also 18. She loses this title once Larissa is announced, though still played straight if regarded only between the five main characters.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Downplayed. She acts all nice and friendly to gain trust, then reveals a more nasty side when the mask is pulled by virtue of trying to steal a pocket watch from Luna and/or Neil and dooming them to be trapped in the building so that she can escape. But in the end, she is not a bad person by nature, instead being driven by desperation to escape.
  • Break the Cutie: Months of being trapped inside a building, gradually losing all the company she had in there, and having to choose between saving a stranger's life and herself has done quite a strain to Diana's mental health. Once Luna successfully constrains her murderous rage, she breaks down and desperately asks Luna if she should follow Cynthia in death. Luckily, Luna reassures her.
  • Clandestine Chemist: She has various 'illegal' chemicals in her room and plans to poison Neil with a deadly toxic, but turns out that was just soporific. Played straight with her crime - conducting illegal experiments.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Her blue eyes go well with the blue...purple...whatever that color is, hair.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After the struggle with Luna, Diana decides to stay in the building and wait for our main duo to rescue her.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: The reason she covers one of her eyes is that she feels uncomfortable making eye contact with others. However, it also fits the "deception" variant as she initially tries to trick Neil and Luna into sacrificing themselves so she can escape the train.
  • Just a Kid: What pushed her to make illegal medicines in the past. Diana wanted to become a pharmacist to save lives, but because she was young nobody took her seriously, so she decided to make illegal medicines on her own. It ends up getting her sent to the Midnight Express.
  • Leitmotif: Has A Future Without You and Poisonous Flower.
  • Meaningful Name: Diana is the Goddess of Hunting and in later times, the Moon. In this case, she hunts for the pocket watches of other prisoners. Lovelace is a variant of “loveless“, which is a reference to how lonely she feels in the building.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother died to an illness, which is why she is scared of death and is researching how to cure diseases so that people can live longer.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Diana, post going berserk and trying to trap Neil and Luna in the building so she can escape, collapses in tears and questions her actions after hearing the melody from her late friend's music box.
  • Out of Focus: She’s considered one of the five main characters and the second companion Luna gets in the game, but since she is trapped in the first building and lacks any direct connection to the other four note , she has little to no appearance after Chapter 1 is finished. The reveal that her friend Cynthia was a member of Black Gear does shift the focus to her a little, but it’s not frequent. She’s eventually rewarded by becoming the main character of the bonus.
  • Poison and Cure Gambit: She poisons Neil and intends to trade a pocket watch, which one needs to escape, for the cure. When Luna steals the bag herself, Diana tells Luna that there is a 5% chance of her choosing the right medicine, a 60% chance the one she chose has no effect, and a 35% chance that she would choose a poison that kills Neil quicker.
  • Shrinking Violet: This comic revealed that Diana doesn't like making eye contact with others because it is embarrassing.
  • Teen Genius: She is said to be quite intelligent and can create various chemicals and medicines on her own.

    Apollo Carson
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c2de8711_2681_4b0a_94f5_c18a332d5cb6.png
Mysterious Ragged Guy

A strange guy that Luna and Neil chance upon in the second building, who believes that no one can be trusted in this situation and actively suggests they split up because they will betray each other eventually. He silently follows them throughout their journey.

Apollo's crime was (accidentally) killing the mayor's son in self-defense.

  • Abusive Parents: He's the son of a crooked cop, who mistreated him heavily to the point Apollo prefers living on the streets than returning home. Their relationship was strained enough that Apollo saved Selene just because the other man was one of the cops chasing her.
  • Accidental Murder: All he wanted when pushing the mayor's son away was to stop the man from beating him. Unfortunately, a metal fence with sharp ends was behind the son, impaling him.
  • Animal Lover: He cares for animals more than himself, and much more than people.
  • Better with Non-Human Company: He cares for his pet bird Celeste, but has trust issues that make him antagonistic towards people, and he makes it clear that he trusts animals far more than his fellow humans. This stems from the abuse his stepfather put him through, Selene moving away and leaving him behind, the mayor’s son beating the crap out of him just for being poor, getting thrown in the Prison Dimension by the Black Gear vigilantes, and his partner in the Prison Dimension betraying him and Celeste, leaving them for dead so he could escape. His Character Development is learning to trust Neil and Luna, and in doing so regain trust for humanity.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Luna and Neil are cornered by a bunch of flying eyes with a huge obstacle they can't push themselves, Apollo shows up to help.
  • Book Dumb: Similar to Luna, Apollo hates riddles, and is impressed when Neil manages to solve one in dire situation.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Green hair and eyes.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Towards Neil. He wastes no time ridiculing what he considers Neil's naive trust in other people.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: His biological father - the only familial member he regards with fondness - passed away long ago. Meanwhile, his stepfather is a textbook example of Abusive Parents and his mother just doesn’t care.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: Always has them under his eyes, representing his exhaustion during his time in the building and the stress of his life prior to the event of the game.
  • Eye Scream: He lost an eye to the Midnight Express when attempting to break the rule, and when he escapes the train he wears a medical eyepatch.
  • Friend to All Living Things: He has huge trust issues towards people, but is always seen tending to and caring for his pet bird Celeste. Also, Selene reveals he liked to feed stray cats in the past.
  • Freudian Excuse: His hostility and distrust of others stems from his childhood. He considered wandering in the street much better than being physically abused everyday by his stepfather while his mother did nothing but watch. He even tells Luna and Neil that his stepfather would do anything to get him in jail once he found out about his accidental killing of the mayor's son.
  • The Gadfly: Takes joy in teasing Neil in particular, and cannot really stop the habit even when he is saved from the Midnight Express by the latter.
  • Insistent Terminology: He insists that Neil is only allowed to refer to Celeste by her full name and not by the nickname "Celes".
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: The scene that reveals his backstory starts with him feeding the stray cat in the slums.
  • Leitmotif: Has Inside This Lonely Cage and Lonesome Stranger.
  • Meaningful Name: Apollo is taken from Apollo 11, the spaceflight that first landed humans on the Moon, notably commander Neil Armstrong - Neil’s namesake. It also means “strength”/“to destroy”, which is fitting for the physically strongest character, and is the name of the Greek God of the Sun.
  • Mighty Glacier: His strong-suit is strength. He can push heavy objects that trouble even Luna with ease, but is not good with speed and balance.
  • Nice Guy: According to Selene, he cares about others more than himself, best seen in the way he treats animals. He also becomes more patient with Neil after learning he was an abused child and treats Diana like a little sister upon meeting her in The Stinger.
  • Not Quite Dead: He seemingly dies at the end of Chapter 2. Chapter 4 reveals he's alright, but lost an eye as punishment for breaking the rules of the Midnight Express.
  • The Runaway: After his Accidental Murder of the mayor's son, he ran away from home, knowing his Dirty Cop stepfather would love to arrest him and be rid of him in any way possible.
  • Sacrificial Lion: One of the main five who suffered the punishment of the train for daring to step on it without a working pocket watch, leaving behind only an eye. Subverted as he’s Not Quite Dead.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He's very abrasive towards Neil, but becomes much more nicer and understanding after subtly learning he's an abused child like him.
Neil: (after succesfully parkouring a bookshelf) Whoa, I did it!
Apollo: Of course you can do something like that! Why did you think otherwise?
Apollo: ....(realization dawns on him) Anyway...good job. Do you want me to give you a pat on the head?
    Neil: I'm not a dog!
  • Unkempt Beauty: Despite his dirty clothes and exhausted look, he is still rather good-looking.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Becomes this with Neil.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The reason why he wanted the duo to separate is because he himself got betrayed by a partner and had his pocket watch stolen, and he wants to protect Neil from a potential betrayal by Luna.

Apollo’s pet bird and best friend. She originally belonged to Apollo’s partner, but he abandoned her.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Apollo calls her "Celes".
  • Attack Animal: She’s capable of fighting against the flying eyeballs, and attacked Neil once under Apollo’s command.
  • Morality Pet: Apollo is cold and distrusting towards the human characters, but he shows his soft side around Celeste.
  • Team Pet: In Chapter 2, she tags along with Luna, Neil, and Apollo, and helps them get through the traps.

    Selene Ambrose
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/58c02015_34ba_41bc_b59f_c3236aa47326.png
Thief of Rose

Luna's childhood friend, who grew up in the same orphanage as her. She's also a famous outlaw and was friends with fellow thief Apollo. However, she plans to leave her old lifestyle behind and start a new, honest life.

Selene was locked up in the Midnight Express for her heists.

  • Childhood Friends: With Luna, as they met in the orphanage.
  • Classy Cat-Burglar: As a thief, she's sneaky, devious, and tries to be classy by leaving a single rose in the locations of her heists.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Downplayed. At the end she admits that she didn't like being trapped with Neil and would have preferred to be trapped with Luna instead, but admits she ended up warming up to him.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Pink hair and eyes.
  • Cuteness Proximity: When she meets Diana, she starts gushing about how cute she is and wants to befriend her.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Towards Neil. She constantly makes fun of him.
  • Dynamic Entry: Introduces herself by jumping off a cliff. It’s not too high, though, and mostly to show off her agility.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Crosses it after finding out about Apollo's entrapment and the truth of the Midnight Express, but she quickly cheers up to help Luna and Neil escape.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: She dislikes the "Greedy Rose" the police gave her.
  • For Want Of A Nail: She was trapped despite having enough mental and physical to get through it because she sprained her ankle and missed the train. However, it is thanks to her presence in the third building that Neil manages to figure out the truth about the Midnight Train and our main duo get their resolve to face their guilty pasts.
  • The Gadfly: Towards Neil and Apollo.
  • Genki Girl: She appears to be a loud, outgoing and optimistic girl with a lot of energy.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Wore them when she was in the orphanage.
  • Goggles Do Something Unusual: She has a pair that allows her to see through smoke.
  • Graceful Loser: She calmly tells Luna that she's been trapped in the building for over 3 years, but decides to encourage her and Neil to find out the truth about the Midnight Express.
  • Important Hair Accessory: Luna puts the forget-me-nots Selene gave her earlier on her hair before they say goodbye. She’s still wearing it when they reunite a year later.
  • Innocently Insensitive: She often acts mean towards Neil out of jealousy for Luna’s affection without knowing that he was an abused child with horrible self-esteem issues.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She consistently cheats, and shows absolutely no signs of a conscience or caring for anyone but Apollo and Luna. She also tends to make fun of Neil, yet they manage to remain on almost friendly terms, which Neil lampshades.
  • Leitmotif: Has New Gear and MINT.
  • Loveable Rogue: She is a thief who steals with no remorse, but deep inside, she is a kind girl trying to help the starving people with what she has stolen.
  • Meaningful Name: Selene is the Greek Goddess of the Moon. It also means "brightness", referencing her bright and optimistic disposition.
  • Only Friend: To Luna in the orphanage, when everyone else looked down on her because of her muteness.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her mother left her at the orphanage from very young age, so she basically spent most of her childhood in there before leaving to Ravenwall.
  • Prone to Tears: Contrast to her overall Large Ham persona, Selene is easily the person who cries the most in game. It is justified though as she has been trapped in this horrific building, alone, for three years straight ever since she was only 16 (one year younger than Diana, and the latter is already showing signs of mental instability after some months).
  • Red Herring: Her ability to steal without getting caught and the scene where she asks Neil to hug her right after he confronted her about the pocket watch might lead one to believe she is trying to steal his pocket watch like Diana used to. However, she truly has no intention to steal anyone's watch, and the hug she asks for is genuinely for comfort.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: While a bit more jerkish than most examples, Selene at the core is a kind girl who wants to help people even through the more unconventional method, which her pink hair allures to.
  • Something about a Rose: Leaves roses on the scene in her attempts to be classy, leading to the police calling her “Greedy Rose”. Her name also has “rose” in it.
  • Stepford Smiler: She's been trapped in the building for 3 years and it clearly affects her, but she puts on a cheerful facade for Luna's sake.
  • Terrible Artist: Her drawings look like they belong to a child. Neil straight up calls them "terrible".

    The Old Man
An unnamed and unseen old man who gave Neil his pocket watch in the ending, allowing Neil to escape. His crime was a minor theft he committed in his youth.
  • The Ghost: He is only described by Neil, no sprite or dialogue ever seen.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Downplayed since he was about to die anyway, but he gave Neil his pocket watch, allowing Neil to escape, despite knowing this would render him unable to see the sunlight one last time.
  • No Name Given: He is only called the old man.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He is only mentioned in the ending and never even appears, but him giving Neil his pocket watch is what allows Neil to escape, break the curse, and free everyone from the train.

    Larissa Fairbairn

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/efcfca70_f8d7_4a86_bafb_249f0c37f73a.jpeg

A young girl who ends up in the same situation as Luna and Neil. Due to her age and innocence, she has little chance of survival. She doesn't understand what's going on, but Selene takes care of her.

She's a new character that will appear in the bonus, and also in the main story in an alternate ending in Chapter 3.

  • The Baby of the Bunch: She takes Diana’s place as the youngest prisoner ever appears, being only 11.
  • Children Are Innocent: She’s an eleven-year-old who somehow got caught up in the Midnight Train, and explicitly stated to be innocent.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Her hair and eyes appear to be of the same orangish shade.
  • Redhead In Green: Wears a green dress that helps tone up her orange hair; not red, but close enough.
  • Youthful Freckles: Has freckles on her nose, befitting her status as the youngest.

Black Gear

    General
A vigilante organization that seeks to eliminate all impurities in the world by all means possible. To this end, they collect data on criminals that have eluded capture by the police, then send their trained assassins after them. They were founded by Justice I and are currently led by his successor, Justice II. The Midnight Train is being used by them to hold criminals that they capture.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: It isn't until the end of Chapter 3 that Neil manages to deduce what their motive is.
  • Knight Templar: Black Gear is a vigilante organization that brings criminals to justice by any means necessary. Unfortunately they will treat justified criminals just as badly as selfish ones, provided the crime is the same.
  • Nebulous Evil Organization: They are a secretive vigilante group that kills criminals, though unlike most examples, they truly believe they are doing the right thing.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: All the members of Black Gear are known by their given codenames. It's stated Luna and Cynthia's codenames were Serenity and Copycat respectively. Justice I mentions that his real name is Arche Radcliffe. Justice II/Liberty and Purity continue to use their codenames, but at the end of Chapter 4, they choose to to take up their old names again. Their true names are Kale and Lucine.
  • Red Herring: Of a sort. Chapter 3's deduction indicates that they use the Midnight Express to bring criminals to another dimension and lock them up for eternity, and that the Deadly Game is all their idea. However Chapter 4 reveals thta, while they are indirectly responsible for the creation of the Prison Dimension, it was all a glitch in the dimension and they only wanted the train to bring them criminals, but never truly wanted to trap or torture the prisoners in the dimension- the train did that on its own.
  • Significant Birth Date: The birthdays of Justice, Purity and Copycat are also birthdays of the members that helped with the development of Midnight Train.
    • Justice: July 22
    • Purity: November 22 (shares with Lydia, the main developer)
    • Copycat: January 9
  • Vigilante Man: They hunt down and imprison/kill criminals that the police have failed to apprehend. Justice II espouses to Luna his belief that the Police Are Useless and cannot be relied on to keep people safe.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: The civilians know they're locking up and killing criminals (even justified ones) in another dimension, but as long as they keep the city safe, nobody cares. Cynthia, a member, even calls them heroes.

    Justice II

Liberty/Kale

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/abb136be_a9c9_41ec_88a8_63e6ebff8e0d.png

The current leader of the Black Gear organization. He's a very charismatic individual that will pursue his ideals at any cost. He directs his organization to assassinate criminals whom the police cannot apprehend, and considers himself superior to the police. He and his right-hand woman, Purity, are childhood friends.

  • Big Bad Duumvirate: While the Midnight Train is the primary threat, he, as the current leader of Black Gear, is responsible for Luna's dark past and the one who works with the Train to imprison criminals, including Luna herself and other defectors.
  • Blatant Lies: He promises Luna that he won't punish Cynthia too hard for helping her escape the Black Gear headquarters.... only for him to send her to the Midnight Express. In his defense, he didn't know there was a glitch in the Prison Dimension, and thought she would be sent back to them.
  • Break Them by Talking: Does this to Luna when she defects from Black Gear, taunting her for all the people she killed and saying that she'll never find a normal life.
  • Childhood Friends: With Purity.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He and Purity, together with several children, fell victim to kidnappers. They were abused for weeks, and by the time they were rescued, he and Purity were the only survivors.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Seems to be fond of Purity as the two were Childhood Friends, and when he has to flee from the police, he affectionately calls her by her real name while preparing to tag along with her.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He's repulsed upon finding out the truth of the Midnight Express and condemns Justice I for creating an abomination.
  • Freudian Excuse: Was tortured by child kidnappers, and the police failed to save the rest of his fellow captives. The excuse is really not intended as a redeeming factor but more of a retrospective explanation for why he believes murder is the best solution to deal with criminals.
  • Graceful Loser: After Black Gear is disbanded, he calmly accepts defeat, saying that Luna will bring justice to people from now on.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: His decision to send Luna to the Midnight Express results in her disbanding Black Gear once she escapes.
  • Karma Houdini: He and Purity get away with their murders, simply deciding to start new lives after Black Gear is disbanded. Though he does expect being arrested at the end of all.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Taunts Luna after she defects Black Gear, saying that she'll never find a normal life after all the people she killed.
    • After finding out the truth of the Midnight Express, he wastes no time mocking Justice I for getting trapped in his own invention
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He's only known by his codename. The ending reveals his true name is Kale.

    Purity

Lucine

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7234632f_f82c_420f_ba75_3a673fb6ae93.png

The second-in-command of the Black Gear organization, a woman that doesn't seem to have many emotions. She's very loyal to Justice II, her leader.

  • Chekhov's Gunman: She is the "woman in glasses" Apollo referred to in Chapter 2, when the trio was talking about Black Gear.
  • Childhood Friends: With Justice II.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She and Justice II, together with several children, fell victim to kidnappers. They were abused for weeks, and by the time they were rescued, she and Justice II were the only survivors.
  • The Dragon: To Justice II, as she is the organization’s second-in-command.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: She has long black hair and fair skin, though downplayed as a majority of her creepiness is played more by her scarlet Empty Eyes.
  • Emotionless Girl: She doesn't show many emotions, if any at all.
  • Empty Eyes: The only character with perpetually no light spot in her eyes, making her red eyes creepier than they already are.
  • Even Evil Has L Oved Ones: She has Undying Loyalty to Justice II, and when Black gear is disbanded, is ready to accompany him in living a normal life, even affectionately calling him by his real name.
  • Freudian Excuse: Was tortured by child kidnappers, and the police failed to save the rest of her fellow captives. The excuse is really not intended as a redeeming factor but more of a retrospective explanation for why she believes murder is the best solution to deal with criminals.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: She is an Emotionless Girl with glasses and second-in-command of a Nebulous Evil Organization.
  • Karma Houdini: She and Justice II get away with their murders, simply deciding to start new lives after Black Gear is disbanded.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: She's only known by her codename. The ending reveals her true name is Lucine.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Despite her lifeless eyes, she always has a kind smile on her face. In fact, she only has two sprites, both of which are just her smiling.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has red eyes and is the second-in-command of a criminal-killing organization.
  • Undying Loyalty: Said to be extremely loyal to her leader, Justice II. When Black Gear is disbanded and he goes on to live a normal life, she decides to join him.
  • When She Smiles: Purity always has an empty, dissonant smile on her face. The only time she smiles for real is when Justice II calls her by her true name.

    Justice I

Arche Radcliffe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cg_justice1.png

The original leader of Black Gear, who disappeared a long time ago.

A vigilante man who dabbled into dark magic and created the Prison Dimension of the Midnight Express in order to capture criminals. However, there was a glitch in the dimension and anyone who entered was unable to escape. This resulted in him being trapped by his own invention and dying.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Purity expresses pity for him after finding about his fate.
  • And I Must Scream: Was trapped in the Midnight Express for 10 years, until he died of old age and exhaustion.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He saved Kale and Lucine in their youth, after they were captured and abused by a child kidnapper. He was too late to save the rest of the kids, sadly.
  • Defiant to the End: Even in his dying note, he refuses to disclose how to break the curse, stating that he "doesn't want to help criminals". Neil realizes that he did left some hints though, in the form of the blackboards in the buildings.
  • Evil Redhead: Well, not actually evil, but more like "having a twisted sense of justice".
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He was the original leader of Black Gear who created the Midnight Express and groomed Liberty/Justice II to be his successor, resulting in those two becoming the primary antagonists. He, on the other hand, is dead as of the actual story.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He created the Midnight Express curse to trap criminals and further punish them for all eternity, but he found out that anyone who entered the dimension, including himself, could not escape, and the Express considered him a criminal as well for leading the vigilante Black Gear organization, so it imprisoned him.
  • Posthumous Character: He's dead by the time Luna reaches the fourth building.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about him without spoiling the whole story.
  • Vigilante Man: Was this before founding Black Gear, targeting criminals and going after anyone he considers evil. It is stated that he shouldn't be considered a role model, with his love for dark magic and his frequent rants on what's wrong with society.

    The Midnight Train/Express
The titular train, a living entity that is the embodiment of a curse. It is the organizer and master of the game in which the prisoners must escape the buildings within three hours, or be trapped forever. It is affiliated with the Black Gear organization, as it is supposed to help them capture criminals, but it has its own plans.
  • Ambiguously Evil: An evil, merciless punisher or a lawful enforcer of the closest thing this Crapsack World has to justice?
  • Antagonist Title: The Midnight Train is a living and malevolent entity who is the one trapping the characters in the dark buildings and challenging them to escape.
  • Arch-Enemy: Becomes this for Neil, who expresses his hatred for it at least once every chapter.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: With Justice II, who works with it to imprison and punish criminals that Black Gear captures. Of the two, it is the primary threat as the one who traps the main characters inside its Prison Dimension and seeks to keep them there.
  • Black-and-White Insanity: Its obsession with the law is beyond madness, and will treat a Justified Criminal just as harshly as a selfish one, provided the crime is the same.
  • Break Them by Talking: In the fourth building, it taunts Luna and Neil by asking if they deserve to escape after the crimes they committed, and goes a long way to guilt-trip them about it.
  • Eviler than Thou: As bad as Justice II and Black Gear are, at least they only go after criminals who evade the police and are generally terrible people. The Midnight Express imprisons and tortures criminals indiscriminately, regardless of the severity of their crime.
  • Genius Loci: It is a living train who communicates to the characters through notes it leaves around.
  • Ghost Train: The Midnight Express brings certain people (specifically, criminals) to a Prison Dimension with dangerous buildings that kill anyone who is not careful.
  • Judge, Jury, and Executioner: It seems to have inherited its creator's twisted sense of justice while going even further, as it kidnaps criminals who ride it and imprisons them in its Prison Dimension, then challenges them to try to escape while tormenting them with the knowledge of their crimes. Even its creator only wanted criminals imprisoned and/or killed, not tortured.
  • Knight Templar: Is obsessed with meting out justice, no matter what.
  • Made of Evil: It is a living curse cast by Justice I, possessing the Midnight Train.
  • Mind Rape: Its specialty in the third and fourth buildings is to torment prisoners with illusions depicting their crimes.
  • Torture Technician: It fills the fourth building with torture devices, and it is indicated to have used them before.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: It was created by Justice I to trap criminals and deliver them to the Black Gear HQ, but it decided to create a Prison Dimension and put its captives there instead, where it would force them to play a Deadly Game- and since its creator, the founder of a vigilante organization, was also a criminal, he would up a victim of it as well.

Characters of the Epilogue

    Delia Miller

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5507140a_81f9_47d9_82da_09929d75ca00.jpeg

Cynthia’s twin sister. A hard-working girl who is studying to become a nurse. She wants to know the whereabouts of her sister, whom she admires. She has romantic feelings for Diana, but is afraid to be seen as an inferior version of her sister.

Backstory Antagonists

    General
Criminals in the backstory who are unaffiliated with Black Gear or the main prisoners.
  • Asshole Victim: All of them wind up killed one way or another, and all of them have committed some crime or terrible deed to deserve it.
  • No Name Given: None of them are named, instead being known by titles or descriptors.
  • Posthumous Character: All of them, save the mayor's son who was killed by Apollo, were killed by Black Gear members before the story began.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Being dead as of the main story, they tend to only have one or two flashback scenes, but their actions helped shape the direction of the story and main characters.

    The Mayor's Son
The son of the mayor. He beat up Apollo for being poor only to get accidentally killed in self-defense.
  • Asshole Victim: He beat up Apollo, a kind vagabond, while screaming about how much he hates the poor. He subsequently got pushed into a metal fence by Apollo and died.
  • No Name Given: Is only called the mayor's son.
  • Posthumous Character: Was accidentally killed by Apollo before the story began.
  • Upper-Class Twit: He hated the poor and considered them nothing but a plague on his father's city, so he beat up the poor Apollo just for being poor.

    Apollo's Partner
An unnamed man who was with Apollo in the second building, and betrayed him by stealing his pocket watch.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: He feels guilty for betraying Apollo and leaving him stranded in the second building, to the point he becomes paranoid of Selene doing the same to him, and this gets him killed by the cave's traps. While Selene condemns him after finding out what he did to Apollo, Neil pities him, as he was just a desperate guy wanting to escape the Midnight Express.
  • Asshole Victim: He betrayed Apollo and stole his pocket watch. Chapter 3 reveals he refused to work with Selene and this got him killed by the cave's traps.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: His abandonment of Celeste, his pet bird, cements him as a loathsome person.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: His theft of Apollo's pocket watch, which left him imprisoned in the second building, allowed him to meet and eventually help Luna and Neil, which would eventually lead to the train's death and all its surviving prisoners being set free.
  • Posthumous Character: Died in a trap in the third building before the story began.
  • Psychological Projection: He betrayed Apollo by stealing his pocket watch, leaving him trapped inside the second building, so he could escape. In the third building, he gets convinced that Selene will do the same to him, even though she would never betray anyone.
  • No Name Given: We never learn his name or even what he looks like.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: We only hear of him sometimes, but his betrayal of Apollo caused his trust issues and left him trapped inside the second building, allowing Apollo to help Luna and Neil escape.

    The Terrorist
An unnamed terrorist who bombed a restaurant, killing everyone inside and Luna's parents.

    Neil's Uncle
Neil's abusive uncle who took him in after Neil's parents died.
  • Abusive Parents: He would give Neil pieces of bread to eat while he himself gorged on food, only allowed Neil to take baths once a week, and blamed Neil for every problem he encountered, forcing him to degrade himself.
  • Asshole Victim: He relentlessly abused Neil and eventually killed a man for not giving him money. Even after Neil saves him by refusing to testify against him, he decided to abandon the boy and continuing extorting people, killing two sisters in the process. Then Luna kills him on Black Gear's orders.
  • Kick the Dog: A hallucination of him appears before Neil when he is tortured, asking Neil to remind him what Neil is just like the old days and in exchange, he will release him. Seemingly lost himself in agony, Neil answers with little hesitation, only for the uncle to declare that by those virtues, he doesn’t deserve to be released and should suffer for eternity. It’s awesome to see Neil turn the table on him.
  • No Name Given: He is only called Neil's uncle. Possibly because Neil himself doesn’t even want to remember his name.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He only appears in a flashback, but his abuse of Neil would lead Neil to lie in court to protect him for fear of what he would do if he told the truth. When he was killed by Black Gear, Neil decided to become a detective and bust Black Gear in part for stealing his vengeance away from him. His perjury also gets him trapped in the Midnight Express.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He abused Neil, his nephew, and killed two little girls.

    The Child Kidnappers
A gang of child kidnappers who abducted Justice II/Kale and Purity/Lucina when they were kids.
  • Asshole Victim: After having kidnapped kids and abused some to death, they get stabbed by Justice I.
  • The Ghost: We never see them on screen.
  • No Name Given: None of them are named.
  • Posthumous Character: They were killed by Justice I long before the story began.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: They are only mentioned in a flashback, but their capture of Kale and Lucina and murder of their fellow prisoners is what led the two to become Justice II and Purity, the current leaders of Black Gear.
  • Would Hurt a Child: They kidnap children, presumably to use as slave labor, and have abused several to death.
